I am eagerly waiting until you get to the overly long and overly elaborate ring quest that has you jumping through hoops of fire (figuratively and literally). Then tops it all off seeing how good you are at manipulating combat in a really mean way. Oh my, that is when the dick-move-ometer is going to go into overdrive. Kind of depressing that those two sentences are still too vague in the context of this shitstain scenario. I mean the one you get in Mosperiburg

Now that we're done with Tanzer, we can finally run our usual start of scenario errands. Rouge will still pop up in Devin and Luminous but he won't join us because we're a monster and therefore unable to get the gift for magic. He can also probably sense that we've already hosed up the Rune magic quest so he wants to stay far away. Regardless, we send our humans to get the gift for light magic. There's no real reason for doing this, none of our final team is going to use light magic but it couldn't hurt. Our next step is to head to Yorkland to work towards obtaining the next ring. This is the billionaire that Mei-Ling mentioned when we were last in Koorong. It seems that her daughter isn't doing too well. Yeah! I don't care who or what he is as long as he can help my daughter. In fact, a man is trying to help her right now... Dammit Riki. Sleeping...The ring! Uh-oh. So it looks like there's some evil spirit that is the cause of the girl's sickness. The spirit is called Mollasite and he's the blue-ish thing on the left side of this screen shot. Mollasite is really weak. It's kind of insulting after we go through all this trouble fighting Tanzer. The only thing he manages to do in the fight is use Sad Song which lowers our strengh. After taking a few thousand points of damage he runs away. What was that? Looks like she's possessed. Obtain ring and retreat. Just like Margmel? Yes. God Riki's dialog is so awkward. Riki, let's go to Koorong. I know of a doctor there who is a specialist on this. Now we have to head to Koorong. The docter Mei-Ling mentioned is Dr. Nusakan over in the Koorong backstreets. While most characters would just run away, Riki is one of the lucky few who actually get to recruit Dr. Nusakan. No. Maybe he is a quack. (Riki explained the situation.) I ususally don't make house calls... It's for the billionaire's daughter. He will pay whatever you ask. Unlimited fee...Sounds interesting... Nusakan is one of the more interesting and useful mystic characters. Instead of being forced to wear the Mystic Mail he gets the much superior Mysticwear armor which has an effect where it can be used to heal someone in battle for a solid amount. He also comes with a few Shadow and Arcane spells. The Thief Ring does pretty much what it says. It casts the Hide Rune spell on the entire party. Could be useful once in a while. So we hop back over to Luminous to get him the gift for Shadow magic. We also start the Arcane quest and pick up Emelia and swap out Mei-Ling and Lute for Emelia and Nusakan. Back over at Daddy Warbucks's house the girl isn't doing any better. Yeah!! Sleeping... You know what to do? (Got no idea). First we let Mollasite possess her. Nusakan explained it pretty well. For the first few rounds we can't do too much aside from some light damage to Mollasite besides poke at it a bit, or it will run away. Mollasite doesn't do too much damage and will mostly stick to status effects. This will prove irritating. Afer a few turns Mollasite will latch onto the girl and start draining her LP. This puts the fight on a timer. He still keeps throwing status effects at you. This here is deadly moss which poisons you and inflicts Anger. Anger is kind of similar to silence in most games. All you can do is attack or use basic weapons. The concept of this fight is actually pretty interesting. Put the fight on a timer and then slow you down rather than overwhelm you with damage. It calls for a bit of a shift in tactics. Unfortunately, Mollasite is just too weak. We were able to take him out with time to spare even with have our team asleep or otherwise crippled for most of the fight. Dad!! Thank God, thank God. Thank you everyone. You can't give them the ring...You'll... I will be all right, dad. Besides the ring told me it wants to be with its brothers. Riki has it's brothers, right? Yeah! Thank you very much. The Healer Ring is one of the better ones. It's essentially a full party heal. Very nice. But that's not all. We can ask the billionaire for some cash on the side as well. Perhaps the rumors of his wealth were overstated. Three-thousandaire is more like it. Once you get 1500 credits from him he'll start saying this. You can still squeeze a little more by exiting and re-entering his house and talking to him. Unfortunately after you get 3000 total credits from him, he'll mysteriously disappear. So since we're already in Yorkland we go to the swamp to do some grinding and close out the update. We learn some new techniques... Nusakan absorbs some Trisaurs... And Riki turns into something terrible (the cat). Dammit Riki. RQHY: Unchanged still at 6

I forgot Nusakan was mandatory for Riki's quest. Probably the one good character he gets that isn't the typical "everyone with a pulse can recruit this character". (see: Gen, T260, arguably Mesarthim) It's debatable whether Nusakan or Mesarthim is better, since Nusakan is easier to get and starts out with slightly better stats, whereas Mesarthim is literally the only way in Riki's quest to legitimately get someone with the Rune Magic gift, since she starts with it. (gently caress you, Tanzer) Both have non-armor locked mystic equipment that grant them a healing skill and still let them equip Suits, so that's roughly an even match, though Mesarthim's has the advantage of causing her to nullify Water damage, making her laugh in the face of anything Kraken-shaped.

# ? Sep 20, 2014 17:17 |

Mesarthim also gets Maelstrom once you get her high enough to obtain all three Mystic pieces of equipment. With the right absorbs she can be a pretty offensive powerhouse with a bitchin' heal skill, no Mystic Mail to screw with armor, and a nice water immunity to boot. Though Nusakan is still probably my favorite Mystic despite all that, and when I was a kid I tried futilely to recruit him in every game with every character.

Lute can also be skipped, but Gen and T260 are necessary. The alternate scene if you hand over Mei-ling to Caballero before speaking to them is worth seeing.

Basically, I'm curious what your plan for the antepenultimate RQHY move is, then, since you need something heavy and AOE to survive it. (see: Gen, T260, arguably Mesarthim) Not quite. Asellus is locked out of recruiting any mecs specifically because she can't recruit T260-G...because raisins. I lean towards Nusakan for my healer because her unique healing ability comes at a considerable cost whereas his baseline one is free. I could understand if you want to use her for Victory Rune, but I usually just opt to give whichever characters in this scenario that I want to hit hard a Rune Sword so they can victory rune themselves. In overall functionality they about break even, though.

Same reason we're seeing Mei-Ling bounce, I should think. Dude's already used Lute in his own quest, so no reason to repeat him here. Especially since it's Lute. Plus, it gives him a chance to show off non-quest Emelia, at least for a little bit. Unless by "she" you actually meant Nusakan, in which case my answer changes to "Because Dr. loving Nusakan."

Dr. Nusukan is really one of the best Mystics in the game (tied for second place?), and I personally consider him a high-tier character. Honestly, I'd say being able to recruit him is a -1 RQHY point, but I'm not the one holding the counter.

Fun Essence fact: Apparently, the girl who was possessed is actually Annie's sister, who was adopted by that billionaire. She mentions having two siblings in Emelia's quest-- we never see anything about the brother, but she does allude to her sister there.

Interesting; that's two Ring bosses in a row now that have had some kind of time limit imposed on the fight. Is that going to be a recurring theme with Riki's quest? Because if so, then it would be kind of neat in that it calls back to the overall premise of the quest (collect all 8 rings before Margamel's time runs out and the region is destroyed), but somehow I get the feeling that I'm giving the game designers too much credit here.

There are no more fights that were created to be a race against the clock, but there is one case where (by virtue of sheer randomness and lovely boss design) that it ends up being a race against the clock by proxy.

It's almost worth a +1, honestly. This ring is one of the most easily accessable, but any new players who go for it straight after Tanzer with no prep or thinking to switch Nusakan in will probably get bogged down by the status fuckery or maybe even killed outright. At least they're more clear about it being a race against the clock than they were with Nomad, though.

I have one rule regarding party formation in SaGa Frontier: 1.) Always use Lute That's pretty much it, though my first playthrough I think I also used Mei-Ling in every party because she's so loving good and easy to make use of regardless of what you want her to do. I'm also going to +1 the idea that Lute needs to be a featured party member in SOMEONE's quest, especially if you go Hog Wild and try to turn him into a superhuman hybrid Gun/Magic/MA/Sword madman.

Also, I'm looking at the mechanics guide, and wondering if Annie is really THAT bad. Sure, her sword talents are garbage aside from talent with Deflect and RosarioImpale, but on the fists side she's talented in 3/4 of DSC (only being untalented with GiantSwing).

People mainly don't like her because she's supposed to be billed like a swordsman but doesn't actually have the talent list to be one. On top of there usually being at least a few better choices for your party members on call, and she ends up getting tossed aside pretty fast.

Asellus and Red probably have the better stories in the game, Blue gives you a protagonist that literally breaks the in-game magic rules(and thus the game) and T260 gives you up to 5 murder machines to trick out and blow poo poo up with. Then again, maybe the joke is that a lot of the game is a glimpse into a more finished product we'll never see come to light.
