Also, you should do Lute's next, because that lazy bum needs to get a job. I'm having a hard time deciding who I think should be last--Red's quest is really fun and would be a high note to end on, but Blue's is really something special for reasons we'll see later on, and I think both should be saved for the end.

So I'm sort of playing along with you in this LP, as I've been rear end at this game since its release date and it seems like you know what the gently caress you're doing, and... :smith:

I'm right before the trigger for the Martial Arts Tournament, rolling with Emelia, Annie, Liza, and Roufas, doing odds and ends (like visiting Shrike for goodies, whipping poo poo's rear end/getting my rear end whipped at the Bio Lab, etc.). Roufas and Annie are tearing poo poo up with dual blades, dominating swords conveniently, but Liza has plateaued in her progress of discovering suplexes constantly, and Emelia only learned her first gun ability over an hour into the quest, despite discharging shells continuously.

Roufas is really getting bitchslapped by the RNG, though--he's got decent DEF and HP, and even though he's never at the front of the party, it seems like the game wants to really gently caress him over, because he just keeps getting smashed in the face for damage seemingly consistently higher than the other party members. Is there a hidden flag that makes the enemy better at dishing super chaos onto his dumb stupid countenance more than anyone else? I am dismally stupefied: confused.

Just be patient with Liza. You really won't be able to consistently spark various Dominant Scrotum Crusher techniques aside from Suplex and Sliding until you have about 300 or so HP when fighting in the Bio Lab or 350-450 outside of it. Same with Emelia. A lot of Gun Techniques are back loaded to around the mid to late mid game. As for Roufas, I don't really know what's up with him. It could be worth checking an FAQ to see if the armor you have him wearing is just really min maxed or something. Remember that the defense stat displayed is only for one type of defense and that Vitality also plays a role in how much damage you take.

I swapped and eventually upgraded his armor, but it still seems like he's taking a beating. I haven't been writing down everyone's damage totals for comparison, though, so it might just be confirmation bias. Either way, I'm not going to complain, because I just had an absolutely stellar run of good luck--in less than 30 minutes of gameplay, I got several sweet-rear end katana skills (including one that I've never seen before!), some gun techs, and DSC. Of course, all those great things aren't keeping us from getting one-shotted in the Bio Lab every other fight (due to early-game low HP/weak armor), but if we manage to stay alive for a turn or two, we can bring some serious pain (especially Roufas--if the enemy is in a tight cluster, his Wheel Slash makes quite a few monsters out there widows and orphans in a matter of seconds).

Edit: Also, I find it hilarious that only one person in my party knows any healing magic, because it's Roufas, and it's Mind Heal, so it only heals him, but he never gets to use it because if someone tags him, he falls before having a chance to get the spell off :downs:

It had honestly never occurred to me when I first played this game in the Playstation era, considering it ended up in the same days as Squall, Cloud, and the parodies of them - I had always taken it as him just being that same kind of edgy, don't-touch-me jerk that CAME out of Squaresoft RPGs. Looking back at it, though, Blue really is the evil twin out of the duo.

Squall was angsty because I'M AN ORPHAN, UNNGH PEOPLE CAN ONLY TRUST THEMSELVES OR THEY WILL GET HURT UUUUHHHGGGGGNNNNHHHHHHH

This has been a great and very informative LP so far and I am really enjoying it.

I actually dusted off my copy of SaGa Frontier to start playing again and ran through Asellus' story in the past day or two. One interesting thing I noticed was that despite having put about 11 hours into the quest (several of which were afk time when I forgot to turn it off) and having all of my characters with ~600 HP, 100 WP/JP I was still fighting pretty easy enemies. I think the most difficult monster that spawned even in the increase battle rank areas was a Thundragon but most enemies were still things like Manticores, Unicorns, and IronHoppers. Of course if I fought in the swamp in Yorkland I would fight the squid guys but I thought it was a bit strange to otherwise be fighting weaker monsters. My memory might be off since I haven't played in years though. I'm also wondering if playing it on PS3 could have affected anything since I've only ever played it on PSX before this and it is emulated.

I know you've touched on battle rank and things like the enemy sprite before battle affecting combat but are you planning on going over how battle rank works in more detail in your gameplay updates?

I played a lot of games using the MGS4 PS3's PS1 emulation (back before the poor thing gave up the ghost), and the only problems I ever had were related to graphics. Nothing too major, and definitely infrequent, but in some titles, it seemed like the emulator had trouble with overlays. The weirdest thing that I saw (other than the usual hiccups and such) was that during an entire playthrough of Final Fantasy VIII, it absolutely refused to tell me where I was at any given point via the little info box on the menu screen. It was blank from start to finish. Everything else was fine--it just wouldn't display the text that would normally say "Garden - East Gate" or whatever.

Also, I'm very jealous that yours still runs. I miss my (effectively) infinite memory cards :(

The game will check the first skill it finds for each of these categories and use it to pick a monster form. As a result the order of your skills matters!

:aaa: I had no idea. All these years, I've just been sticking skills into slots either randomly or in order of usefulness, completely unaware that I was doing monsters wrong. That's enough to make me dig the game out yet again and do it correctly this time.

This ought to be interesting. Let's see if the Goons have a better imagination for dick moves than Square does.

Though considering they're responsible for poo poo like Yiazmat and Absolute Virtue, I'm not sure that's possible.

I'm excited to see the speculation from those who haven't endured the pain. I doubt anyone comes close to guessing how big an rear end in a top hat this scenario becomes, though.

And the game sends us off with a hideously garish font truly worthy of Riki's quest. Good Riddance.

This screen alone almost deserves another RQHY point all by itself. Goodness, it's terrible! Even worse is that they slap you in the face with this at the very end of the sequence, so it's the last thing you see.

Honestly, though, the remaining stories are so darn good, Margmel/Marg-Mel/Marmel will soon be at best a bad memory and at worst completely forgotten.

It never fails to make me laugh how rough Mesarthim's art is in that last picture. There's that obvious spot where someone in the localization side went "BOOBS! REMOVE THEM IMMEDIATELY!" and didn't even bother to at least touch up the spot where they went over it with the eraser.

I always laugh at this, too. Her sprite looks like it had a last-minute bikini drawn onto it as well. NO PIXELATED PORNO ALLOWED

Honestly, I always figured there was more than half a decent chance this whole thing could've been resolved if Mesarthim had actually said something to the guy instead of staying locked up in one room of the mansion and not wanting to talk to a human. I get the whole Asellus has to come in and resolve this because it's important to her own story, but seriously, the dude probably would've let her go if she'd told him to his face she wanted to go home.

This is sort of how I interpreted it. He saves her, she says "Thanks so much, I'm so grateful," he says "I really like having you around! Stay with me for a while," and she's just too polite to say "umm you stink bro."

She could've said "Hey buddy I appreciate what you did for me and we're friends now but I gotta get back to my family. I'll come visit once in a while," and spared the poor dude the heartbreak, though :smith:

We're thrust into a fight with three Black X fighters. Normally we'd transform into Alkaiser, but with Cotton here that's not an option. Because Red has to keep his identity a secret, he can only turn into Alkaiser if all the humans, mystics and monsters are dead or incapacitated in some way that removes their vision (status effects like blind, sleep or petrify.)

I love this gimmick. It reminds me of the old Superman TV show, where seemingly every week they'd come up with a new way to incapacitate/blind everyone nearby so Clark Kent could do Superman things. I think my favorite episode was when Clark, Lois, and some of their coworkers got trapped in a cave. They wanted you to think "They're in close quarters--there's no way he can move the rubble blocking the entrance without revealing that he's Supes!" but then the cave "ran out of oxygen" and everyone passed out :allears:

"I live in a place where monsters, humans, mystics, and robots all live side-by-side, where magic is a real thing, where a giant monster swallows ships, where I was saved from certain death by a superhero and turned into a superhero myself, but you looking a little young for your age is JUST IMPOSSIBLE"
