Well, fuck. Seriously?

For countless millennia, he had been a non-integral part of keeping the Administratum moving. Untold receipts, countless expense reports, and manifold taxation forms had come across his desk, and he had dutifully done little for the budget of such a bloated, arcane bureaucracy. His life extended by bionics, his speed enhanced by cogitators and logis implants, and his very soul stripped bare by the millions and trillions and billions of numbers passed in front of him.

Many men would have folded under such tedious boredom, but Gary was not like most men. No, Gary was dull. Paint drying, grass growing, the very essence of time itself slowly trundling forward, all of these paled in the shadow of Gary Johnson's utterly boring personality. A stamp collector and a man who fancied himself a connoisseur of socks, he could utterly destroy the minds of his colleagues more thoroughly than the most powerful psyker.

Chaos is not choosy. Chaos does not need to be interesting. And Chaos.. can be methodical. It is not known what drove Gary into the arms of Khorne, or how the dark god could even accept such a man beyond his ability to shut down the minds of the hated psyker, but Gary Johnson has since mutated. Grown powerful with synthetic muscle and flagellant, microscopically bladed tentacle arms. A veritable juggernaut of might, only his dull, boring head has remained unchanged.

Blood for the blood god. Skulls for the skull throne. Save your receipts to be fully reimbursed.

-----

Welcome to the recruitment thread for a brand new, high level game of Black Crusade! Usually I'd have some sort of fluff pertinent to the coming adventure but since I didn't, have some stupidity about an accountant turned obliterator.

I will be looking for FOUR or FIVE players, dependent on submissions, and I am open to both space marines AND humans. For character creation, I want you to choose a chaos god to align with. It doesn't have to be the chaos god whose advances you've taken the most of, but it can't be the opposing god of the one you have the most advances with. IE, you take 3 Khorne advances and 1 Nurgle, you cannot align with Slaanesh, but you COULD align with Nurgle or Tzeentch. You can also select to be unaligned or follow Chaos Unvidived, if you wish, EVEN if you have a shitton of one god's advances. This alignment WILL STAY throughout the game, unless you tell me you want to change devotion for whatever reason, and then we'll do something about that, a ritual or mission of some sort.

Once you have aligned yourself, you will have an additional FIVE THOUSAND experience to spend on top of your starting XP; which means Chaos Marines will have 5,500 XP and Humans will have 6,000. This also means you will get an additional 25 Corruption and 15 infamy as well, putting everyone above the threshold for their first mutation or gift, and may well put you in the running for a second. Also, for the alternative archetypes, there are NO RESTRICTIONS so long as you meet the XP requirements, which with the XP I've given you shouldn't be TOO hard.

However, DO NOT ROLL YOUR GIFTS/MUTATIONS YOURSELF. I will roll them for you once everyone is picked, and will give you a list to pick and choose from that may well likely include one gift and multiple mutations. This is a game that will mold itself to how you, the players, play, so don't be worried about making a dude that's useless; I'll split the party up to accommodate if necessary.

Also, since I forgot to mention it, you will roll you stats! Roll 10 2d10 and discard the lowest, roll infamy as normal.

So let's get us some heretics! Recruitment will be open until the 15th.

OAUGH

gently caress it I'm going MAN MODE FOR KHORNE on a Renegade.

Drevan

Drevan used to be a sergeant of the 17th Brontian Longknives "Scalp Takers" before the whole regiment turned to chaos. The Scalp Takers were already infamous enough due to their obvious practices after-battle and for being excessively brutal. The turning point was after the regiment was betrayed by the 38th Scintillan Fusiliers on the world of Sisk. The scintillan commander on the ground was a pampered noble who was also secretly a Slaneesh cultist, the man, hoping to raise the status of his own regiment in the Imperial Guard, didn't think twice before firing his artillery while the 17th Brotian were currently engaged in close quarter combat against the enemy.

Drevan was leading a charge against an enemy bunker when the "friendly" shells hit. Thousands of comrades and enemies alike died instantly. Blood and body parts started flying across the battlefield while Drevan watched. He got angry. He got really loving angry. A Khorne brass icon from one of the heretics he was fighting started glowing red near him. He grabbed it, and when the fighting had stopped, he gathered the surviving members of his regiment to at least get vengeance against the Scintillans.

Using the element of surprise at nightfall, Draven invaded the camp that the commander was using as his base of operations. The Scintillans were completely slaughtered, not expecting anyone to survive the artillery strike. After glorious bloodshed and personally cutting the head of the commander, Drevan offered it to Khorne while burning the Slaneesh medallion the scintillan secretly kept.

Afterwards, the ex-guardsmen knew they would be hunted mercilessly by the now-hated Imperium, and so they scattered. Drevan, after discovering the Chaos God that would reward his own viciouness, escaped to the Screaming Vortex. From there on he slaughtered many in the name of the Blood God: merchants; imperial navy; xenos and other pirates too. For Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows, as long as it flows.

Well, fuck. Seriously?

Also, clarification on dedication: you have two options for dedicating at your own choice.

You can either dedicate BEFORE spending XP, which will make advances more aligned to your god less expensive (but also making opposed ones incredibly expensive)
OR
You can dedicate AFTER you spend XP, which is the normal way of doing it, which will average out the costs all around.

I expect most people will dedicate AFTER so I want you to make a note when you dedicate, though it'll also be apparent in your XP costs.

People dedicating BEFORE spending XP will receive a bonus gift, since you've lead a life pretty well dedicated to that dark god. They'll see this and go 'okay dude gets a daemon weapon or daemon name or something, enjoy' and hey good deal, free poo poo.

It's basically akin to the MAN MODE I offer in all of my games. Do it the hard way, get bonuses; do it the easy way, have a more rounded character.

e: Advanced archtypes found in the three Tomes are not counted for manmode. You're getting a much more specialized and advanced character for your XP, and most are automatically dedicated to the relevant god of that tome, so no bonus gifts for you jerks!

Thinking Heretek, perhaps dedicated to Khorne, though Nurgle might be better, not sure yet. Mostly because Heretek is the most likely to be heavily altered as far as I can tell.

Lord Koth posted:

How's starting acquisition going to work? Same as normal, or with some bonus due to extra experience?

Good question. I'm going to have to think about that but I'm thinking of doing a pool bonus. Like all starting acquisitions, you'll have to meet or beat a +0 for all mods, and I might just give you a pool of points to put on buying poo poo; 80 points that you can spend in batches of 10 to affect a modifier. Which means you can grab one near unique item or several very rares, etc. without getting it as poo poo Quality and detrimental mods where it'll fire one shot and then explode into cancer gas.

Just need to figure out HOW to do it, per se. We'll worry about acquisitions once characters are picked, but go ahead and make a note on what you do want.

#acolyte GM of 2013

Vice Captain Olivia Montreau

Vice Captain Olivia began her career with the Imperial Navy as an officer candidate recruited from the noble families. Due to her natural charm and ability to interact with the ratings on an almost equal terms as opposed to "better" than them, she climbed the ranks quickly to Vice-Captain of the Cruiser Righteous Contempt.

As Vice-Captain it was her job to do whatever the Captain needed in that moment; be it flying the ship, firing guns, or rallying the rating against a boarding action. During those tense moments of combat is when she really felt alive. The power she felt when behind the helm guiding the colossal vessel, or watching the enemies of man crumble under her expert leadership was...intoxicating. There was beauty to the carnage and to the silent fireworks of macro batteries in the void.

It was on a campaign against the Tyranids where everything changed for Olivia. While mustering against a boarding action, one of the foul creatures attacked her with some acidic weapon, corroding her face. Olivia's psyche shattered when she woke up in the Infirmary after the battle and looked in the mirror. The medicae said nothing could be done to fix her injuries. She fell into a great depression, refusing to leave her room.

During a jump through the warp to yet another battle, she began to hear the whispers. They nibbled at her mind, promising her everlasting beauty and endless battles where she could practice her sublime skills, if only she took charge. The Captain was weak. He was too conservative, he was unwilling to take risks, and saw combat not as beautiful art, but as a chore, a transaction. Already more liked by the crew than the captain, it did not take long for Olivia, now wearing an old carnival mask from her innocent youth to hide her scars, to orchestrate a mutiny and to capture the Righteous Contempt.

Now a fugative from the Imperium, flight to the vortex was her only option. Once there she brought the beauty of war to wherever it was needed, in favor of whomever was paying her more. The Righteous Contempt now painted in neon colors took to the vortex, blaring discordiant sounds through the vox of her enemies and firing weapons modified to display all the colors of the rainbow. And the voices were right; her life was filled with the never-ending pleasure of sublime combat and manipulation of others, and she was beautiful behind her growing collection of vibrant masks, some more traditional in nature, others made of various materials, if only to heighten the pleasure of wearing them.

e: okay changed the fluff and went from apostate to the Pirate Prince(ss). If you pick me Dyne, feel free to make the Righteous Contempt any class ship you want.

Serving with the Emperor's Children since the Cleansing of Laer. Hassan became one of the Legion's first Noise Marines during the performance of that most wonderful of symphonies, Maravaglia. Laying waste to the humans around him in the orgy of hedonism and murder, he was amongst the first Astartes to rise from their seats in La Fenice to pick up the instruments to keep the chaos of the symphony going. It was then he learned, while using the sonic instruments power to make someones eyeballs pop up and bleed as his organs ruptured and he screamed in agony, that he had talent as a musician. After the Horus Heresy, when the Kakophoni split up amongst the various warbands, Hassan traveled the galaxy as a mercenary, earning power and resources and acquiring his own retinue of bitches, hoes and roadies. He started a rockband dedicated to Slaanesh, himself playing lead with his sonic blaster, a fallen adeptus sororitas as the lead singer and vocalist, and various other humans playing bass, guitar, and other instruments. Under the label "Pussy Riot", they travel the warp, orbital dropping from a strike cruiser or some corrupted rogue trader's vessel to bring their concerts to a wider audience, usually in the middle of a warzone and the murder cube droppod/stage landing smack dab on top of an Imperial Guard trench line.

Veneficus had, a long time ago, been a happy junior librarian, working in the libraries of the Crimson King. Then many large men arrived, and made the king their leader. There was much rejoicing. The large men recruited some of the strongest and smartest locals to bolster their numbers, transforming them into similarly large men. There were research papers, glorious battles, even more glorious studies, and things were well. Then the furries came. Without warning or justification, they destroyed everything. Many of the priceless scholarly articles were destroyed, and many of Veneficus' fellows lost their lives.

Now Veneficus was an angry marine. He hated the Imperium for sending the wolf-loving barbarians after them for nothing. He hated Chaos for the flesh-change that had ravaged his beloved legion. He hated Ahriman because of the rubric. He hated himself, for believing Ahriman could succeed. Most of all, he hated his new master, once for engineering the legions downfall, and again for saving him.

Despite this, he swore allegiance to Tzeentch with the rest of them. In his mind, he insisted it was strictly an alliance born of need and convenience, nothing else. His brothers were gone, transformed into piles of psychic dust inside suits of old armour by a single fatal flaw in an otherwise functional spell millenia ago. Only one being in the universe could lead him to the knowledge required to fix undo that mistake. No matter how much he hated that being, it was his only hope of fixing what went wrong. He couldn't put his personal feelings ahead of the good of the fellowship.

Change and change until change is our master, for nothing, neither god nor mortal, can hold that which has no form.

MANMODE! Aligning to Tzeentch at the start.

Cerpin Taxt

To begin with, Cerpin Taxt was dead.

At least, that was the official story, as far as the Imperium was concerned. Killed in a massive firefight on Tremula, Power Substation NE/117g, along with eighty-seven brave storm troopers - at least, that was the official story. The truth was that Taxt was very much alive, although whether it was a life worth living was a matter of some debate. See, Cerpin Taxt was a heretic. He didn't have any say in the matter, he was born a heretic. His natural ability to perceive and channel the Warp marked him so. And it was no fault of his that he was never discovered by the Black Ships that frequently visited Tremula. So it was that Taxt became a traitor to the Immortal God-Emperor.

Unwilling to give in to the society that had, in his eyes, failed him, and eager to exact his vengeance against that same society, Taxt began exploring his powers. He quickly found a certain satisfaction in turning those powers that had condemned him against the Imperium. Of course, such unchecked use of psychic potential could never go unnoticed for long. Very quickly, Taxt found himself being pursued, but not just by the Imperium. A voice whispered to him in his dreams, telling him that he was not a heretic, that he was special, destined for greatness. The Imperium was holding him back - they were the heretics! How could they claim to be superior to him when it was so obvious that his own powers put him above them! It made so much sense to Taxt, and fuelled his hatred of those who had turned against him.

I'm familiar with 40k RP but not Black Crusade; how tolerant of newbies would this game be?

John Dyne
Jul 3, 2005

Well, fuck. Seriously?

I am very tolerant of newbies, regardless of how tolerant the system may be. BC is as newbie friendly as Fantasy Flight Games can be. If you have any questions or need help with character creation, I and other helpful goons are usually in #acolyte on synirc.net, or you can ask questions here.

Also, since someone did ask in IRC: if you take an advanced class (such as chem hunter), it lists that you gain +9 Infamy and +15 corruption. Ignore that. That is meant to take into account the level of XP you have; you will instead have the +15/+25 I listed in the OP.

Alexios Balathu, Mouth of the Host

Alexios can remember when he and his brethren venerated the corpse-god, so long ago. He can also remember when that faith died and was reborn in the image of the Ruinous Powers; the razing of Monarchia. Hundreds of tomes praising the Emperor's name and his deeds, iconography beautiful beyond compare, it was a grand monument to what had been achieved by Alexios, the Word Bearers and the Imperium.

Then those bastard lapdogs of Gulliman razed it as the Emperor defied the loyalties of Lorgar and his legion. So much faith and hope placed into him, reduced to ashes in Alexios' mouth by las fire and lies. But soon he found a greater truth, greater than all the False Emperor's armies and all the stars and worlds of this existence. When Lorgar brought back his tales of the Chaos Gods, Alexios found it hard to deny the logic behind his words. And unlike the False Emperor the Ruinous Powers were more than willing to reward the pious. Thus, forever renouncing his ties to the Imperium, Alexious joined his legion in spreading the Word, a Word of joy, hope, honour and endurance.

Even after the initial assault on Terra failed, Alexious never for a second questioned his new-found faith. His eyes burned with the fires of a new convert, and forging his own path he eventually made his way to the Screaming Vortex. The Chaos Gods reward the faithful, and Alexios uses his oratory and skill at arms to win new worlds and populations over. Alexios knows that whatever comes his way the Gods will show the path, and when the time comes and the corpse-god's works lie in ruins? Then the gods shall finally tear down the barriers between this world and the next, and all humanity shall know rapture.

Harbinger of Heresy: Dark Apostles are powerful
orators whose words convert entire populations to the
worship of Chaos and inspire them to unite and rise
up against their Imperial Oppressors. When attempting
to use any Interaction Skill to affect multiple targets, a
Dark Apostle may affect 10 times the number of targets
normally allowed. Further, he may spend an Infamy point
to re-roll an Interaction Test and add a Degree of Success
to the result. A Dark Apostle may also attempt to convert
any NPC target(s), including minions, with a Disposition
Modifier of +20 or greater to his own heretical beliefs
through an Opposed Charm Test. The Dark Apostle
gains +10 on the attempt, and, if successful, he can
spend an Infamy Point to mark the target(s) as Faithful.
Faithful followers are zealously dedicated to the Dark
Apostle’s cause as long as their disposition towards him
remains positive, giving them a +10 bonus to Opposed
Willpower Tests to resist hostile Interaction Skills.

Dark Devotion: Dark Apostles dedicate their
every victory to the Ruinous Powers and construct
nightmarish monoliths and vast icons of devotion
to venerate their chosen Gods. A Dark Apostle may
spend an Infamy Point to construct and dedicate a
monument to the Chaos God of his choice. The size
of the monument and the time required to complete its
construction is subject to the Dark Apostle’s ambitions
and the resources available to him, and additional Skill
Tests might also be required as the GM sees fit. If the
GM decides the resulting preparations are sufficient, the
Dark Apostle may grant two Degrees of Success to a
single Skill Test involved in a Rite or Ritual performed
at the site. In addition, any Rites or Rituals that share
an alignment with the monument gain a +30 Ritual
Modifier, while those aligned to another God gain a
–30 Ritual Modifier. Truly worthy altars can qualify as
Glorifying Acts (see page 70) at the GM’s discretion.

TOO FAT TO BE A JUGGALO

Kayleen, Transhuman

Born on Zephyranthes, a world isolated since the Dark Age of Technology, where Terra was only a distant myth, Kayleen was one of many medi-techs administering the state of the art nano-hospital facilities. When discovered by an Explorator fleet, the wide spread use of automated intelligences, universal augmentation, freely available technical education, secularism, and even partial electronic transference of consciousness made just about every branch Imperium completely lose its poo poo. Multiple failed invasions, broken by a technological base that never collapsed into a dark age, culminated in an all out, planet cracking Exterminatus. The opportunistic agents of Chaos had barely arrived at this point, and were having difficulty making inroads into the Zephyrs' material, secular culture. "Corrupt and Conquer" turned quickly to "Loot and Flee" and Kayleen was one of the prizes. One of the vanishingly few survivors to escape thanks to the raider fleets, her knowledge and manufacturing skills allowed a meteoric rise from slave to valued servant to independently wealthy tech-baroness.

This isn't to say she's pleased about the situation. Kayleen found most servants of Chaos to be utterly repugnant, and discovering there is no part of human civilization anywhere in the galaxy immune to the zealous worship of warp entities is a cause for ongoing horror. Still, the towering augmented forms of the fallen Astartes and gribbly, head-tubed augmentations of the Dark Mechanicus pique her curiosity in a twisted way. She'd love to crack open the hood and look inside, so to speak. A tiny, nattering voice in her head reminds her that playing them off against one other might be her only hope to stay free. In any event, she has refused to let this animosity cloud her desire for independence and revenge against the followers of the Corpse God*, nor her quest to spread knowledge of heretical science everywhere she can in defiance of the red robed self-mutilators.

*(For some reason they get REALLY pissy when asked "He's medically disabled? Why don't you just transfer his mind-data to a robotic form instead?")

MANMODE, dedicated to the Weaver of Fate, TZEENTCH.

Once a Codicier Librarian of the Lectors of Ixis, Terenthius fell along with the rest of his Chapter during the disastrous Abyssal Crusade. Known for being dedicated to obtaining ever more knowledge even when part of the Imperium, the trip through the Eye of Terror exposed him to more and more forbidden lore, and his personal fall came upon a daemon world that resembled nothing more than a gigantic library, filled with endless winding corridors filled with all sorts of knowledge. Taking along a squad that fell alongside him, he would disappear into the depths of the planet for multiple centuries before finally re-emerging.

Now dedicated to the Great Sorcerer, he scours the Galaxy for fobidden knowledge, increasing his known lore one book at a time. Drawn to Cypress Beta 32 by the promise of ancient unique tomes hidden in the vast trove of the governor, Terenthius has resolved that they belong to him, and will endeavor to acquire them by one means or another. Whether that be as a prize for an excellent performance, acquired through backhanded means, or simply by having their current owner suffer an unfortunate "accident" and making off with them in the confusion, remains to be seen.

Probably hunting Terminator Armor and a Psychic Hood, but we'll see.
Some direct means of his, Jaye, Dirk & Seris are Terenthius's assistants that he's brought with him to provide assistance with any rituals he may need to perform, and to help them further their mastery over their fledgling powers. At least, those are the honeyed words he's told them, as they also serve as a convenient power supply or emergency sacrifice should he need one. He's had other assistants in the past and there will surely be more in the future, as vaguely talented fools seeking power are everywhere.

Willpower Test. If the Test is failed, the Heretic gains no benefits; if successful, the Heretic
drains the Thrall Wizard's psychic essence completely and may Push his next Psychic Power without
suffering the normal effects of Pushing such as possible Fatigue or Psychic Phenomena. Regardless of
the outcome of the Test, the Thrall Wizard must pass a Challenging(+0) Toughness Test or be utterly
slain; treat him as a minion that has been killed.

Binding Rod: Whenever the Heretic that commands the Thrall Wizard suffers from a result on either
the Warp Phenomena or Perils of the Warp Table, he may choose to have the result affect the Thrall Wizard

 that has been killed.

Would manmode but Flesh Shaper's come pre-aligned to Slaanesh.

Barbarosa Macvicar

Melancholia is well named. A bleak and miserable world. Others that lived there were filled with constant misery and privation. Each filled with desires that could make even a devotee of Slaanesh blush. Most cannot do anything about their situation, and their desires. Barbarosa however was one of the lucky ones. Gifted with a mysterious power to shape flesh to his will, and what is more using his power, and selected in a way that he will never reveal, he managed to leave the dreary Melancholia.

Going out into the Screaming Vortex Barbarosa quickly found himself overwhelmed with temptations, new vices and excesses. Out there in the Screaming Vortex he could pursue his ideal of perfection, his art, by manipulating the flesh of others. Turning them into his pets, his art, his experiments. In time he lost interest in Shornaal, falling to the lure of Slaanesh, to the deprivations and cravings long denied him.

In time he will perfect his art, and turning his experience upon himself he shall perfect his own form. For now he shall travel with others, perhaps they can prove useful to his art, or at least as meat shields until his own art is perfected.

Long ago, the Death Guard had come to visit the love of Nurgle onto an agri-world (their planet was called Caraxis XXIII, but none who called it home knew even that), too far out and too poor to be worth defending. The boy that would go on to be known as Scaleris was on that agri-world, and was one of the nine-hundred and eighty six souls to survive, of the four and a half billion souls who had once called it home. The bloated, rotting heralds of Nurgle noted that His plagues had seemed particularly effervescent as they ripped through the population.

The plagues had also affected the boy who Scaleris was, of course. Even those chosen to survive Nurgle's infectious love still had to suffer it's embrace, and he was no exception. After his entire village had been reduced to little more than bones and weeping sores, the boy who would become Scaleris endured, but barely. It is impossible to know whether those chosen by Nurgle survive by His grace, or if they earn His grace by surviving, but a Plague Marine had found the boy who would become Scaleris, his body so weak he could not even blink the bloated corpse-flies from his eyes and his soul so weak he could do nothing but love Nurgle for allowing him the strength to endure.

Scaleris could not remember how long ago that was. It had been a long time, surely, but how long was beyond his ability to grasp. He was not even sure if he was a man anymore; perhaps he was just a collection of disease and bone allowed to exist, sentient, in his armor through Nurgle's grace. It had been a long time since Scaleris had felt pain, after all, and longer still since something had truly wounded him. He was proud to think he was like Nurgle's blights in this way; slow, but strong and inexorable. Scaleris was not sure what Nurgle wanted for him, nor why he allowed him to survive, but Scaleris would face it and through force of arms or Nurgle's embrace, he would subjugate it.

Mutius Plagueborn
M-M-MAN MODE Aligned Nurgle

"It is not hard to understand."

The giant's voice bubbles with filth. The sound is like a volcano of bile, deep and rumbling with phlegm. "All things must end. You know this. It is the natural way of things. I simply bring death to that which stubbornly refuses to die."

A scoff

"You think I'm wrong?" The giant's voice sounds almost compassionate. "I have lived far longer than you have, mortal. You believe the Imperium to be eternal. This is only because you have not seen its progression. It is dying-"

A denial

"-YES. Yes." The giant's anger quickly dissipates. "It is decaying, as all things do. Centuries, I have watched it. I was once one of the False Emperor's chosen. Even in that short period of time the Imperium has grown steadily more corrupted. It is dying and there is nothing you can do to stop it."

Another denial

"Why fight it? I did-- for a time. I discovered the truth. And accepted it. I offer the same choice to you now. Take my offer and see the truth of the galaxy, unvarnished by the lies you have been fed all your life. I will show you the truth of the universe, and perhaps you will accept the Plaguefather's wisdom and help put the Imperium to rest so that something new can grow from its ashes."

A final denial

"As you wish, Inquisitor. As I said, death comes for all eventually." A cry is abruptly terminated.

MAN MODE NURGLE

THE BUTCHER

By dusk he lurks and when embers die
Ware the Butcher and his buzzing flies
Through dark of night and to bedside he creeps
To carve your flesh and claim his meat.

The nursery rhyme was too perfect. Antocius couldn't have written something better himself if he had tried. The backwater planet he crashed upon was about as podunk as it got, and there was very little to do while waiting for recovery. Just when he had grown tired of wandering the woods and cutting down the occasional tree for shits and giggles, he came upon the quaint town and overheard those magical words sung by a gaggle of children.

Well. At least he wouldn't be so bored.

Playing the role of the Butcher was some of the most fun he's had in his life. Certainly more so than endless fighting with Astartes or other traitor marines or demonspawn and so on, ad nauseum, etc, and all that. Wholescale slaughter was a bit old hat at this point, and thus Antocius decided that his spirited potrayal of the Butcher would invoke more psychological terror as opposed to outright murder.

Sure, there were several blunders as he was trying to acquaint himself to his role. Subtle entry and sneaking through houses tended to cause the most problem. The floors were obviously not meant to support his massive weight and on more than a few occasions he broke clean through the floor to crash into the basement. Or when he would decide to hide under a bed or in an armoire to wait for the inhabitants to return. For some reason they always seemed to spot him. He even tried entry by way of sliding down a chimney once, but unfortunately got stuck within and had to smash his way out. Not his finest performance.

Generally, each blunder required a hasty retreat covered by judicious use of flies as cover. It wouldn't do to be discovered and ruin the mystery and the children's fun, after all.

Still, he did claim more than his share of chunks of meat, and by the time some other marine acquaintances finally arrived to extract him, he was lugging around several sacks of it.

"What's in the bags? I'll explain. No, no. I'm not Antocius anymore. Call me the Butcher. Here. Listen to the rhyme. Trust me, the children love it."

Hey Larry! How about a haircut!

MANMODE SLAANESH

Duke Kalkaros, heir to the Lakonius dynasty and a man with too much money and too few responsibilities. Having been born with a silverspoon Kalkaros has always had it easy, and from a young age he has had nothing else to do but waste his fortune on pleasures. And wouldn't you know, that's exactly what he has done. And it suits him fine. Between hosting the most wicked parties on the hive world of Malfi and doing Emperor knows what on his private ranch on the pleasure world of Quaddis, the biggest problem Kalkaros has faced is growing weary with the entertainment and always craving for more; faster speeders, stronger drugs, more exotic food, more visceral bloodsports. The legal, and even quasi-legal opportunities for Kalkaros to indulgence himself were spent decades ago. Smugglers and slavers became involved, then actual cults and before too long, dark whispers promised Kalkaros the greatest pleasures that had never even been imagined, the only price was that he had to tempt others into experiencing these sensations as well. Kalkaros accepted. Like, without a second thought.

And the parties got even wilder, more opulent, filled all kinds of excess and sensations available to someone with limitless resources available. That's when the Inquisition got involved. It's still not clear what tipped them off. Maybe it was the xenos drugs. Maybe it was the kidnappings to get fighters for the arena. Maybe it was the acolytes being served as main course. Maybe it was the loud music with subliminal messages keeping the neighbours up all night. Anyways, Inquisition crashed the party, executed everyone they caught and confiscated all House Lakonius property they got their hands on. Kalkaros managed to escape with a considerable amount of wealth, and decided to ditch the scene, Calixis was a bore anyways. Guided by dark whispers, Kalkaros learned that if he continued to serve Slaanesh, he wouldn't have to be limited by his mortal body and the pleasures would never have to end. So that is Kalkaros' plan for the time being, unless he grows bored with it.

Duke Kalkaros is huge obese man of indeterminate age, he has obviously been through some longevity treatment and it's impossible to know how old he is. He is incredibly petty, self-centered, has short attention span and is always seeking new sensations. This means that he is almost constantly high on drugs, chewing on some exotic food, or both. Closely behind him is his favorite servant, Trevor, carrying all the heavy stuff Kalkaros can't be bothered to carry himself. Incidentally, Trevor is also the only servant who survived the Inquisition's strike. That's not to say he wasn't used as a meatshield like all the other servants, but being a favorite Kalkaros dragged his body along and had him fixed up with machine parts, so he can keep serving Kalkaros. Trevor is not pleased with this turn of events.

MANS FOR THE MAN GOD, MODES FOR THE MODE THRONE!

Dimachaerus, Burggraf von Cruorcastrum

In a past life, Dimachaerus had been in officer in the Imperial Guard. Things didn't exactly go well, and after an incident involving a sanctioned psyker, horny guardsmen, scrying, and the daughter of a particularly well-connected planetary noble, much of the regiment was condemned to to summary execution. Dimachaerus, who had not been invited to take part in the evenings entertainment, was quite justifiably cross, having been condemned along with the common riff-raff despite his noble birth, so he slid away, escaping with one of the munitorium employees.

Turned out his talent for combat was a welcome one in the vortex, and he built fame and fortune for himself. After a few years, he had his asteroid fortress carved into the shape of a horned skull in homage to his new god, and a loyal cult to populate it. He gave it a name fitting a servant of the Blood God, left most of the day to day affairs in the hands of Gary, his most loyal minion, old comrade, chief accountant, fan-club president, and resident batperson, and focused most of his own time and energy on organising bloody gladiatorial battles.

He threw the most magnificent parties. He would invite his friends and neighbours to his asteroid fortress, where they would proceed to slash, stab, cut, tear, bite and generally harm each other in the name of Khorne. Though often battles would be fought between his quests, or their slaves, or exotic beasts of all kinds, Dimachaerus never shied away from a challenge, and many of the skulls decorating his estate had been taken by his paired power swords. They might have not exactly been his when he made his way away form the Imperium with them, but he'd grown used to them over the years, like a veteran grows used to a cybernetic hand or a chosen of the gods grows used to his new horns. When he'd bought the matter up, Gary had arranged the necessary documentation to prove that they'd always been his.

Whem Dimachaerus fled to the vortex, he did not go alone. With him was an old scribe from the munitorium. Later, when Dimachaerus had established his household, Gary would become the one who kept things running while the lord of the castle was in the ring proving his superiority with sharp bits of metal and power fields. Gary wasn't much of a warrior, but he was useful, and he was loyal.

He might not be a master of blades, but he was the undisputed champion of the Dewey Decimal System within the walls of Cruorcastrum. When Dimachaerus declared himself a noble lord again, having lost his imperial titles by receiving a dishonourable death sentence, Gary produced very convincing documents supporting his claim. Due to the low population of the asteroid he claimed as his, there were no objections. Dimachaerus offered Gary a title of his choice as a reward, having newly reacquired his power to grant titles without the inconvenient need for forged documents or decapitations. While Dimachaerus might have been expecting the winged paper-pusher to ask for a baronecy or knighthood, Gary asked to be made the Head of Accounting, preferring the more bureaucratic sound.

MANMODE TZEENTCH/SIGMAR
Doc Johann

The last Johann saw of the Empire, he was cowering from a vampire in a crypt somewhere in a poo poo village, trying to bring it to justice, or whatever. He doesn't quite remember, because it doesn't really matter anymore, does it? Thanks to a sudden freak TIME BUBBLE he was swept many many years into the future into an existence of ONLY WAR and found himself cast amidst those who could most definitely use his medical knowledge. Having perfected his medical arts, and having made several improvements to his body, he's ready to Rock and Roll - and kick rear end for Chaos.

Malcolm Mandari

Malcolm Mandari was a simple grave tender on a backwards low-tech agri-world. It is hard being a grave tender, everyone thinks that dead bodies are dirty, that they carry infection, even if the person died of a las-shot to the head, and so everyone kept their distance from Malcolm. Too Bad everyone was right.

The body was that of an off-worlder, some visiting trader or some such. Died of some sickness the medicae never seen. As Malcolm was burying the body, he could hear the puss oozing out of the wounds...speaking to him. They soothed and comforted Malcolm, gave him conversation no one else ever did. So when his new friend bid him to eat him, he didn't give it a second thought. As he consumed the first bit of rancid puss, he felt the warmth, love, and sense of belonging that he always craved but never got from his living friends.

Over the coming months Malcolm did what the gurgling puss asked of him. He never buried asked him to do. He added new bodies to it so it would grow big and strong, giving him more of the putrefied love to consume. Then he took some to the wells and then the grain store going off world. Finally, as the townsfolk grew sick, then died, then came back and gathered in the cemetery, Malcolm finally belonged. When the Plague Marines crawled out of the warp rift by such a large sacrifice to Nurgle, Malcolm joined their ranks, and followed them into the warp, and into the screaming vortex.

Dmitry
When the doctor was sucked into a rift in space-time back in the crypt, Dmitry tried to do the good thing and hang onto him. Sadly, distracted by an angry vampire a she was, he failed, and tumbled into the same hole in time, still hanging onto the doctors ankles. Boris, his loyal ursine companion, followed him, eager to get away from an angry vampire.

Travelling through tens of thousands of years in an instant did a number on his mind, and it didn't take long for the violent environment of the 41st millenium to wash away Dmitry's old morals and faith in Ursun, replacing them with bloodlust fitting a devoted servant of Khorne. Still, he fared a bit better in transit than the bear did. He arrived tentacle-free, and his reckless disregard for personal safety, combined with riding a mythical beast of teeth, brown fur and tentacles, assured him some measure of success.

Dr Hugh was a psychiatrist of an ordinary sort. Fabulously wealthy, catering to the neurosis and addictions of ordinary hive nobles and otherwise famous people, the sort of thing every psychiatrist does on a daily basis. And yet, after a century of enjoying his well-earned retainers, he began to notice a disturbing trend in his client list. Name after name after name was being crossed off, reported as Dead by the servants who came by with platinum-engraved retainer cheques for his surviving patients.

Obviously something was going on here, something that was not being discussed in the hallowed chair, for none of his normal gossip sources were discussing these deaths in the usual amusing distain for those who had been so unfortunate as to actually die from their gross stupidity (after all, modern medicine was supposed to repair all that horrible damage, giving you a good story for your next party!).

A few weeks of pumping his patients for information was enough to give him an idea as to what was going on. His faithful paycheques patients were going to parties. Wild parties. Of the sort that only young noble teens could throw. And they were getting involved in some of their usual debauched fun, only to later run afoul of the Inquisition! Obviously something was wrong here, the Inquisition was only supposed to be involved with the uneducated and easily swayed masses, but now young men and women, people who relied on him to keep them sane enough for their multiple centuries of mindless pleasure-seeking, were vanishing!

Even if it was not his fault, and of course it wasn't, after all, nobody had mentioned anything dangerous until he had asked them, he would be blaimed unless he could find some way to turn their minds to something less... heretical.

But he had no idea what they were actually doing! The only way he could find out, and could put a stop to it... was to attend himself, and find a way to dissuade them from whatever it was they were doing! But he wasn't the type to be invited to these Slaanesh Orgies or Khorne Slaughterbaths that were being regularly thrown. The best he could do was get involved in one of the less refined cults, one of the ones that the better working-class people joined, and find enough distasteful information about the practices that he could dissuade his patients from attending. Yes, that might work. Of course, he would need a costume, it wouldn't do to be seen in his usual tweeds...

Divine Conduit
of God's Message

I see you recoil. I can see you tensing up, trying to walk on eggshells. You don't want to set the madman off. You needn't do so. I know my reputation and that of my brethren. The mindless savagery, the legendary rage of the Blood God himself. But random bloodshed is not his only way, though it pleases him greatly. I am a warrior. I have dedicated myself to perfection of warfare in all its forms, victory by any means, all in his name.

I was on Skalathrax, I saw the true dedication to Khorne in the heart of a warrior with nothing but faith and a flamer. I hope to someday achieve his level of enlightenment. But for now, I can only follow the guidance of battle, the heated contest between true combatants. Let others hide at range. I know they think they know war, but they cannot truly experience it and overcome until they shed their pretense of superiority and draw their blades. Only once a man is eye to eye with his enemies can he feel any real triumph at defeating them.

Now, it's time to die. Don't be surprised. I said I wasn't a madman to butcher you for no reason. There is a purpose here. Your blood shall extend as a river to the Blood God's throne, joining the countless others who praise his name with their deaths.

Blood for the Blood God.

Epicurius
Apr 10, 2010

He was born on a shrine world, and dedicated to the Emperor from an early age. He remembers that. Made a monk, his early life was dedicated to prayer, study, and self mortification. They taught him to obey, not to question. But he had a questioning spirit. The one luxury he had was a window in his cell, from which he could see the stars.

He would watch the stars every night as they moved across the heavens. For years he watched, and he came to understand. The stars had messages. . .images of the future, of the present, of the past. All the things that were, that are, and that could be, were to be found in the stars. Then he studied the stars more, and he came to realize that the truth was not in the stars, but in the empty spaces between the stars. That was where all knowledge was. That was where all wisdom was. And no one could see it but him. No one could understand. He would change that. He'd make them understand. He started writing a book...the Book of the Forbidden Stars, a guidebook, intended to let others see what he did, so that they could understand. But he kept it secret, knowing that there were those in the Imperium who would fear the truth. Further years passed, and he finished the work. But what use was there in writing down the knowledge if it was not to be shared. He fled the monastery and the world, taking his work with him.

He came to another world; a small agricultural world, and settled in a small farming community there. The inhabitants were glad to see a monk, a holy man, for their community was too small to have a priest of their own. So that was how Bartameus Pax first got his flock. They were eager to learn; eager to absorb his teachings, and he was eager to teach. He would share his wisdom. He would share the book.

The mills of the Empire grind slow, but they grind fine, and the Inquisition came to learn of heresy on a small ag world in the middle of nowhere. Heresy and rumors of something else. Something darker. And so the Inquisition came, and their fears were well founded. The investigation by the acolytes revealed not just error, not just heresy, but Chaos worship. The village burned, of course, but it was the acolytes' greatest regret that they never found the leader of the Chaos cult; a renegade member of the Ecclesiarchy. From what the acolytes put together, he was a powerful psyker who had somehow been overlooked by the Black Fleet. As near as the acolytes could tell, he had a book; some sort of heretical tome that he used as a psi-focus, to concentrate his powers of divination. It would have been nice to find him and force him to submit to justice. Still, it wasn't a total loss. The acolytes had cut out an infection, at least. And, if they had failed to find the heresiarch this time, they would. The Inquisition always did, in the end.

Bartameus looked through the viewport as the Screaming Vortex came into view, holding the Codex close to him, as he thanked the space between the stars for showing him he had been betrayed and was in danger, and also for the Rogue Trader ship that happened to land on the planet to get food for their trip out to the frontier. It was a shame about his flock, but they would be in a better place now, one with the stars, and he had important work he had to get done.

Have Ye Heard The Good News Of Chaos Undivided Today? Hear it from your ever-jolly Local Dark Apostle. Just don't try to shove the Word Of The Emperor in his face, because he REALLY doesn't like that and starts acting like half the cults of Khorne with you. Or he could be the sneaky type and just convince your would-be Emperor-worshippers into stringing you from the rooftops. One or the other.

ANDROGYNOUS-MODE SLAANESH
Braxxus, Pirate King

Braxxus' custom Blastmaster - Face Melter

Well, they didn't take Terra, but that's fine. There'll always be another day. No point obsessing over spilled milk, after all. Braxus fled with the rest of the traitor marines into the Eye, and then time got a bit screwy. Sure, he's technically very old, but he doesn't look a day over 80, and he still feels as youthful as the day he ripped the head off of that Imperial Fist. What was a marine to do?

Become a Pirate King, of course.

He found one band in particular that didn't seem to really be having much luck, and offered his advice and guidance by cheerfully massacring most of the top of the command chain and inserting himself instead. The rest of the band took it quite well because pirates.

If there was one thing he knew from the War on Terra, it was how to execute lightning raids, and though his tactics were dated in the most strict of sense, they still proved vastly effective when it came to plundering shipping lanes and making Braxxus and his crew obscenely wealthy.

Many parties were had, with the prerequisite amount of debauchery, of course, and all was well even if it was becoming a bit stale. He was a bit of a legend, sure, but just how legendary?

Maybe it was time to get the band back together.

Mordred, fallen Black Templar, Champion of Khorne

Concept is a former Black Templar who realized the enemies of mankind include mankind as well, so the only recourse is to eventually kill everyone. Instead of just going around and killing people himself however, he's using the Black Templars' go-to problem solver: He wants to start a crusade that will destroy the Imperium, then the Xenos, then Chaos, and finally turn on itself until no one is left.

I'll try to get an actual backstory in later, but I wanted to make sure I posted the sheet before time was up.

Epicurius
Apr 10, 2010

We were born in ignorance and superstition, crafted to be the slaves of a tyrant who saw us as nothing more than puppets. Even Lorgar was deceived at first, and he is the greatest of us. He embraced the lie, once, bowed his knee to a man who he called God and Master, and the rest of us bowed with him, as we were taught to do. We fought for him, died for him, killed for that man, spreading his false creed; his tyranny, throughout the galaxy. And everyone has to admit, he had no more fanatical servants than us. The servants of the false god like to forget us now, but we served him, and served him well.

Lorgar was the first to discover the truth. He was always the wisest of us all, and he was the first to see the self proclaimed emperor for what he was. He studied the religions of the past, before the one who would be a god wiped them out; yes, and the Xeno religions too, and he found a common origin to them. He realized that they all sought to appease the primordial forces of the universe. We realized we had been worshiping falsely all along.

So, when Horus revolted, we joined him. We sought to overthrow the false god and return the worship of mankind to the true gods. Alas, we were defeated. Defeated, but not destroyed. We withdrew into the Screaming Vortex, the better to plan our return. And over the millennia, we Word Bearers have waited and planned. Every day, we have been victorious, because we have been free from the so called emperor who holds mankind in thrall. But the time is coming when I will wait no longer. The time is coming for a new crusade to sweep the false god from his seat, to reclaim the worlds of men and set them free. And so I, Veneficus Malifai, with my herald at my side, will leave the World Bearers, for now, and go out among the masses and the scum of the Screaming Vortex. There, I shall raise an army, one to bring the False God to his knees, and all shall worship the true lords of Chaos!

The Herald of Venificus is, to all appearances, a giant beetle. He's probably a Xeno? Some sort of regular beetle mutated by Chaos? A minor demon? Nobody knows but Venificus and his herald, and the herald doesn't seem to talk (he chitters), and Venificus isn't saying. Whatever he is, he carries a pole with Venificus's standard, the a pole with Venificus's banner, topped with the desecrated skull of an Imperial Saint, into battle, while also attacking with his claws and horn. When not in combat, he also serves as Venificus's valet and manservant, taking care of his clothes and armor, cooking meals, etc.

I didn't realize we had the same name until you pointed it out. But I support an all Venificus game. Only characters named Venificus can join our band.
