Is Misery 2.0 any less unbelievably stupid than it was when it came out? I don't see any patches on its ModDB page. I'm getting kinda close to finishing 1.0 and was hoping they fixed it.

Go to the ModDB page and scroll down until you see the bright orange box talking about the latest patch. Click on it and it'll take you to a download for 2.0.2.

Personally, I think they've fixed the biggest issues that existed in 2.0 (including a lot of bugs and CTD-issues).

Autumn Aurora 2 for SOC has been released and it's a really nice mod (I'm about 2 hours into it so far).

It's much more demanding than regular SOC mods as it adds the high quality trees and brush from Absolute Nature 3 for COP, and almost all textures and models have been replaced with new higher quality ones.

It uses a lot of Misery stuff (some icons, the desaturated look, music) however I feel it fits well with this mod and the atmosphere it has and doesn't feel wrong to me the way Misery does since the authors simply went for an Autumn season and look and not a scorched-earth one.

A few neat features worth noting is a COP-style inventory screen, Atmosfear for SOC, your gloves change based on what suit you're wearing, and you need a detector to detect and grab artifacts.

This looks really cool. Does it make the game significantly more difficult than the base game?

Also spawning in a new game and getting mauled by mutant cats sure sucks.

In my opinion, mutant cats have been the worst enemy in every mod they've been implemented in. They're usually the size of large dogs and almost completely silent, except for that distorted "cat sound" they occasionally make. They usually take way too much damage and their models/animations are terrible.

And drat, I actually find all the C-Consciousness stuff very interesting, it's too bad ShoC is such a kick square in the balls and I never completed it. The end that is.

Yeah, it's pretty surprising when you kill one and their "true" body falls to the ground. I think a lot of the creepiness is derived from the fact that their appearance isn't obvious, and many people seem to deal with the glowing, intagible balls of light by simply running through the labs and avoiding them. So when they eventually realize they can kill them and finally see what they really look like, it's quite a surprise. I don't think it'd be as magical a reveal if it were more obvious.

Another interesting mod is Shoker 2.0 which you can find linked here. Noticeable features are 3d shell casings, lots of weapons, ability to place machine guns on a bipod, 3d scopes, ability to see your legs when you look down, and a very cool cutscene at the beginning.
However it's a bit of an experimental mod (movement is very strange, you can't hit anything on full-auto) but worth a try if you want something different and are into gun porn.
It may not work correctly with the Steam version as it has it's own program it launches the game from (and if you do try it back up your bin folder first!).

I've been watching YouTube videos of Shoker 2.0 and another interesting feature I noticed is that the weapons are "tangible". That is, weapons actually occupy space in first-person and will interact with objects in the world. Get too close to a wall and the player will automatically adjust their weapon to compensate for the obstruction--and the orientation of the barrel will actually affect where your shoot. And I've always loved 3D scopes, despite how rare of a mechanic it is. It's really loving cool that you can use your iron sights, even after mounting certain scopes (because that's how they were designed).

Seriously, the weapons in this mod look great, and come to life with really competent accessory system and animations. I mean, just check out this AS VAL.

To be completely fair, I think SGM is a steaming pile of dogshit, too. I installed SGM 1.8(?) and encountered some boars at the very beginning of the game. I hopped on a rock so that they stuck around but couldn't harm me, and proceeded to mag-dump the AKSU that I spawned with into one of their heads. It easily took 100+ rounds before the creature died from its own laughter. Things didn't really get any better from there. But still, people will recommend that turd with a straight face.

With the exception of maybe LURK (RIP LURK v1.2) there's a lot of "sponginess" and bullshit difficulty humps in most STALKER mods. I guess the mistake that Misery made was trying to sell itself as "hyper realistic", even though it's still probably one of the least spongy mods I've had the misery of playing.

Cream-of-Plenty

"The world is a hellish place, and bad writing is destroying the quality of our suffering."

I don't really feel like most of these are valid criticisms of the mod, itself, beyond "[mechanic] is supposed to be realistic but it actually isn't." If you divorce the idea that the developers wanted Misery to be an ultra-gritty realistic mod from the mod itself--and honestly, when I'm playing a STALKER mod (or any mod for that matter), I don't give two squirts of piss about what they wanted to accomplish, especially when "realism" and "fictional zone full of mutants" exist in the same sentence--suddenly most of what you just wrote doesn't really matter. The mod is challenging. Arbitrarily so, like many STALKER mods. The mod imposes mechanics on you that may not make a lot of sense...like most STALKER mods. The mod has a steeper climb before reaching the "godlike" hump than most STALKER mods--but it's still there. The mod has issues--both bugs and mechanically--that can be "fixed" with community mods...like many STALKER mods (OGSE's Turrets, for example).

But from the way you whine endlessly about it, it's like we played completely different mods. It's seriously not the crime against humanity that you make it out to be, nor is it as difficult as some people seem to think it is. The "Alpha Squads", buggy mines (that didn't always go away when you turned them off) and bulletsponges from SGM were exponentially worse than anything Misery throws at you, optional or no. Personally, the infamous "cave section" at the start of NS is considerably worse than all of my gripes with Misery, combined.

Frankly, almost every STALKER mod I've come across is flawed in a variety of ways--that's really the charm of STALKER mods, in a perverse way. But it's just loving weird how people have fixated on this one mod with their complaints--complaints that could be directed at any number of other mods (but aren't) for some bizarre reason.

I've played a lot of mods for Stalker, lots suck, a few are decent...Misery sucked all the drat fun and desire to play away.

My point was mostly that "many of these same complaints could be leveled at other mods that nobody seems to mention, but certainly seem to enjoy". And the whole realism thing was in reference to Ddraig's post which (I love you buddy, but) was basically all about how unrealistic it was. Yeah there are a few for Misery, but that one seems like it may be the most comprehensive.

And yeah, it's like in the Fallout modding community where you'll have a popular mod such as, say, Project Nevada, with a mod/add-on for Project Nevada that is made by somebody outside of the Project Nevada team, and then a language patch or tweak for that mod/add-on that isn't even made by the person who made the original mod/add-on for the mod for the game. Layers within layers.

I don't think we've gotten to the mod-equivalent of Inception's "Limbo" though. Not yet.
