Thanks to KC Green of Gunshow fame for the header!

Surprised aren't you? I knew you would be! You don't need to have another worry about Silent Hill this year. Consider this a vacation, guys - a reward! It's VoidBurger and Kamoc's turn to take it easy! I'll see that you're comfortable.

There's a Nightmare Before Christmas GAME?

Released by Capcom on October 21st, 2004 in Japan and a whole YEAR later in America and the UK, The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge is a action-adventure game set one year after the events of famous 1993 "claymation" flick, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Yes, the video game came out over ten years after the film. (I suspect it has something to do with Kingdom Hearts, which came out in 2002 and featured a Nightmare Before Christmas level.) Critics rightfully complained about its boring, repetitive combat, samey-samey fetch quests, and VERY irritating music and sound effects. But don't worry, I'll be replacing most of the annoying music with alternate music pretty early on, before the music really starts driving people.... batty.

Oogie's Revenge is surprisingly faithful to the spirit and mood of the film. Capcom recreated Halloween Town very well, using pictures of the original set and even movie concept art for reference, it seems. Many of the original voice actors reprise their roles for the game, also. Too bad the game is so annoying.

If you haven't seen or don't remember the movie very well, you should watch this video and I'll sum it up for you.

Without further ado, let's play The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge! :spooky:

I love how Oogie Boogie rolls in this game. Most video game villains stick to the shadows, have their henchman fight for them, and prepare for a dramatic reveal. Oogie on the other hand uses a PA system to announce "gently caress you! I'm in charge now! Fight me!" as soon as the gameplay starts.

Haha, it's funny you say that the main villain usually "sticks to the shadows" because what we fought in this first episode was not Oogie himself, but literally his shadow. He brags about it in the lyrics of the boss battle, and the figure we get at the end of this episode is "Oogie's Shadow." :eng101: I need a version of this emoticon that is Jack instead of that smiley. Fixed! Yay, TyreForHyre!

I talk a little bit more about Oogie's shadow in the second episode. Trivia ahoy!

I know Burton didn't direct it, but how much did he actually have to do with the film?

DID SOMEONE ASK FOR TRIVIA??

Tim Burton wrote the Nightmare Before Christmas as a poem while he was working as Disney animator on The Fox and The Hound AKA: The saddest Disney movie ever made and don't even argue with that because it is a FACT*.

Here's the original poem animated all fancy and narrated by Christopher Lee!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbPCwc_Cdz0
Click here if you'd rather hear Sir Patrick Stewart narrate the same thing!

Tim was only a producer on the project, as he was busy directing Batman Returns and dealing with the pre-production of Ed Wood (you know, that Tim Burton movie no one ever saw. No, not Planet of the Apes.)

As a result, he was present on the Nightmare set only about 8 days in the entire 3 year shoot! So really, Nightmare as we know it isn't due too much to Mr. Burton's influence. Henry Sellick did all the directing, Caroline Thompson did the screenplay, and Danny Elfman did the entire score (Which actually came before the scriptwriting phase of production! Elfman called it "one of the easiest jobs I've ever had," he loved it so much), so I'd vet them as the true people behind Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

By the way, is the ghosting in the video very noticeable on characters that aren't Zero? I'm not tech-savvy, and I'm half convinced that the ghosting is simply part of the game. :\ There are definitely certain glowy affects that seem to ghost on purpose (Besides Zero, there's a glowing pumpkin light in Town Square that looks ghosty like that all the time, for example.)

Also, POLL TIME! Do you guys want me to....

Sorry for no Halloween update, but please enjoy this fun little imgur infodump about The Nightmare Before Christmas while I record a gigantic backlog of episodes.

And here's some fun facts not mentioned in that infodump:

Jack puppet talk: A typical stop-motion puppet is short and squat with huge feet for balance. Jack is impossibly tall and thin, with tiny feet, thin ankles, and extremely long arms. There was much trepidation about turning Tim Burton's drawing of Jack into a puppet... and yet the puppet-maker pulled it off pretty well. He turned out tall and thin enough to appear graceful and not clunky. The animators remarked that Jack was a dream to work with, with an unexpectedly large and smooth range of motion.

Oogie puppet talk: He was the largest puppet with the heaviest armature (metallic skeleton) of any character in the movie, weighing in with a 6 pound, two foot high metal skeleton made of 175 parts - gigantic for a stop-motion puppet. He was twice as tall as almost all the other puppets in the film. "You could tow a truck with Oogie's armature" commented one of the movie's sculptor's. Animator Mike Belzer said "I had to dig in with my feet and physically push the Oogie Boogie puppet. He's so huge and there's so much foam [filling the space between his armature and the surface], therefore the armature has so be very tight; it's literally wrestling with the puppet."

Another interesting fact is that there was an alternate ending considered for the Nightmare Before Christmas, wherein Oogie is revealed to have been Dr. Finklestein all along in some sorta harebrained passive-agressive plan to somehow get back at Sally for not appreciating him… I'm glad they dumped that, because it dumb as hell. You can see that deleted scene's storyboards at 1:40 in this video:
