S03E05: 1956.12.01-07 (Fire & Drizzle) The war will be over by Christmas, right? 1956.12.01 A return to our CAS roots! The napalm reel This got me promoted to Flight Lieutenant. 1956.12.02 The dangerous fighter sweep reel 1956.12.03 The strange encounter on a CAP reel 1956.12.04 MiG-15 on the bombing run against Diepholz. *sigh* The mission went very smoothly, right until we got jumped by a MiG-15bis and a MiG-17 flights on the way home. The close shave reel Two planes lost, one pilot wounded. 1956.12.06 An escort mission is something we haven't seen yet. We're assigned to prevent the extinction of a pair of Canberras. The escort service reel One of our pilots crashed, KIA. 1956.12.07 The devastating bombing reel Another medal! I swear, I didn't report, that my two bombs did all that damage. We weren't getting any medals flying Egypt, because the medals have to be added for each service separately. EAF is not normally playable, so they had no medals to offer. I think, I'll do one more update in this campaign, with one more video, regardless of how long this war actually takes. There are only 3 Soviet tank units left on the map and the West is rolling out at least two formations of about 90 tanks each. How big is that gif? Or rather, how slow is that host? It turns out the next update will have to be a bit bigger, than I anticipated, because the squadron got upgraded to Hunter F.6. Oh, and... Our Ralph Reynolds rammed another Soviet plane to death, SelenicMartian fucked around with this message at 13:43 on Nov 16, 2013 |

The part with the multiple idiots colliding chasing a single beaufighter I believe is meant to be in slow motion (it speeds up as their burning wrecks start to fall).

That gif is 13 MB, actually, I got it to download (overnight) through a manager, because the hosting was arse. The final Hunter videos are uploading, so the update should come tomorrow-ish. This campaign has a laziest win screen.

S03E06: 1956.12.08-24 (Hunters & Hunters) 1956.12.08 A dull CAS mission. 1956.12.09 A successful Il-28 intercept. Then I rest a while in the hospital after being set on fire. Savages. 1956.12.12 A CAP mission I skipped by walking out of my plane, right after I climbed into the cockpit. The ground forced were taking a day off, too. 1956.12.15 A fighter sweep. The ground offensive is back on track. The last fight of Hunter F.4. A darn good fight. One pilot went MIA. Five kills for me. Plt. Off. Reynolds did it again. A visiting officer bumped into Ralph one day - fourteen stitches and a broken wall. We told Ralph, he shouldn't taxi his Hunter through the base johns on the way to the hangars. He nodded and took another swig. We switch to a new type, because we aren't killing things efficiently enough, possibly. Despite getting an upgrade, we still receive the same number of planes we had. It's like they delivered only the conversion kits, and our entire unit spent a whole afternoon changing the wings and the engines. 1956.12.16 A CAP mission I use show off the new toy. Reynolds left for a brief medical check up. The Hunter F.6 presents us with a range of loadout options unworthy of an interceptor. The new old chap Well, that was awkward. Another hospital visit, but no fatalities. We return to our scheduled broadcasting. 1956.12.21 A dawn sweep mission, in which our first ace Allen Duke bought the farm. He knew it was coming, and even the new type couldn't save him. However Graham Crossley got his fifth kill on that flight, so we still have a gun-using ace. Also, the doctors brought Reynolds back the other day, and said he was sane, while undoing the padded straitjacket. Supersonic-in-a- I also took the time to snap some pics of other squadrons' aces 1956.12.22 A CAP flight during which nothing of interest happened. 1956.12.23 An Il-28 intercept followed by a promotion to Squadron Leader. 1956.12.24 A fighter sweep. The final showdown. The mission video A good cover for a Pigface album? The final performance evaluation. ... Something tells me that this campaign was rushed. The art recycling is lazy, the caption is lazy, the editing of the said caption is lazy as gently caress. However, we're finally done with the expansions, and the developer had more time to flesh out the later campaigns. Our final roster. Bader was shot down and captured in the very last mission, so he'll receive his ace honours when he returns from the tour of Berlin. Ralph Reynolds got his ace status, but never saw a promotion. He doesn't care, for as long as he's wearing the fighting trousers. SelenicMartian fucked around with this message at 17:36 on Aug 22, 2014 |

The missions where you're flying the F.6 are still titled "Hunter F.4" on Youtube. I'm looking forward to our possible choices for the next campaign.

VOTING POINT #2 For the 1962 Red Thunder campaign The brief summary of options is provided in the supplied informational video. And the text below. The winner will get a 5(ish)-episode season, while the losers will get one episode each. Last minute addition to make things more interesting, not in the video! USAF F-105D Thunderchief + Air-to-Air search radar + Air-to-Ground radar + Can (on a good day) go Mach 1 at ground level (well, not literally), where the air is the most dense. Not an easy feat for the F-100. + 2 Sidewinders + M61 Vulcan is a never-jamming Gatling cannon. - Doesn't turn - Doesn't brake - 2 Sidewinders - 2 Sidewinders - Bombing by the seat of pants at Mach 1 is not for the faint of heart, and F-105 gets a lot of bombing assignments Now you're choosing a plane to fight yet another Evil Soviet invasion! Vote in BOLD: F-100D, Lightning F.1, Hunter FGA.9 or F-105D. I'll leave it open for about 48 hours. ------------- RESULTS pre:Hunter Lightning ==== F-100 ======== F-105 ============= So, in order of increasing complexity the videos will go in the sequence of Hunter, F-100, Lightning and the F-105 campaign. It's also worth pointing out that the Lightning F.3 will be making an appearance during the 1968 stage of this LP. Can't wait for the 1979 vote just for one of the insane difficulty choices.

Clearly it's time you flew as fast as Lightning Though choosing this time was tricky. Also, is it possible to get hit by cannon and NOT die now? Because most of the kills seemed to be basically 1-hit jobs.

Hmm. So depending on how true to aviation history it would be, you could find a plane retired in the middle of a campaign?

There's a logical way to decide the vote: musically. Armenian dances and Mott the Hoople are right out. That puts it down to Metallica vs. AC/DC. It's a close call, but I side with the Thirty Thieves and the F105-D Thunderchief.

F-100D, because missiles are the future, and you totally don't need guns because close range dogfighting is a thing of the past because missiles are perfect no really.

...At this rate, it feels like the only victory screen we're ever going to see is that one with the fireworks and F-4s. I've got a feeling that Selenic Martian said something along the lines of that being one of the few victory screens available, but I'm going to complain anyway. At least the Hunter got a worthy send-off. As for the voting choice, unsurprisingly I was struck with a hankering for the English Electric Lightning (not least because I have an amusing anecdote to share regarding that aeroplane), but since we're going to run in to a later variant later I'll stay my hand and plump for the F-105D Thunderchief, because like hell am I going to vote for the flying hoover (AKA the Super Sabre). Though I should probably save this pun for later, I think our enemies will be in for quite a shock, don't you?
