Deathwatch Strike Cruiser SWORD OF INTOLERANCE, above planet Sovereign

Away from the boiling chaos of the Achilus Crusade's Salients, experienced Deathwatch Battle-Brothers are called for a delicate mission on a lost world, ready to face an ancient terror that slumbered beneath the ruined planet...

The ceasing of the warp engine's howling told it all, The Sword of Intolerance had arrived. The Warp during all voyage was unusually calm, Eyjolf noticed, with the Navigator easily finding favorable currents. For the past weeks the Kill Team practiced, meditated and checked their wargear in whatever space they found in the ship. The relative haste (even by Deathwatch standards) that the Space Marines were selected for this mysterious mission did not allow proper individual chambers to be set up. Even the human serfs aboard were close to being considered an skeleton crew.

Shortly after the arrival, whirring servitors appeared to break the cold silence with summons from the mission officer. They lead the Astartes through dark labyrinthine corridors until they arrive near a room with ornate doors, whereupon the servitors returned to whatever programmed duties awaited them. The team slowly opened the doors, revealing a large opulent round chamber. In the middle of the room laid an advanced holoprojector table, four gigantic Space Marine statues watching over it. Behind the table two figures talked to each other before pausing when the squad entered. One of them was easily the most cyber-augmented Space Marine they had ever saw. Zahariel recognized him as Master of the Forge Xerril, having served in the Dead Stations for years. The other figure wore a yellow painted Power Armor, typical of the Imperial Fists.

"BROTHERS. APPROACH." Thundered a deep metallic voice as Xerril positioned himself in the table. He slowly rotated his head to look at each squad member as the Space Marines also positioned themselves, giving a single nod at Zahariel when their helmets met. "I am Xerril of the Iron Hands and I'll be the overseer of this operation. Let's not waste time." He presses a button and a detailed hologram image of a planet floats over the table.



"Sovereign. Once a bountiful agri-world of the Imperium, was judged fit for an Exterminatus after the entire population turned insane. Now, almost a century after that, the Ordo Xenos detected a new presence deep within. This is a Necron world, Battle Brothers. One that is slowly waking up and represents a grave threat to the entire Sector. In one of the many planetary scannings we discovered an unique energy signal coming from this location." A greenrune flared near the equatorial region of the planet. "I immediately asked for an old contact to investigate it, Magos Explorator Alek Bertay. To escort him I sent a clave from my clan, the Surrgol. They departed in a Thunderhawk headed straight towards the coordinates." Xerill pauses, something close to a mechanical sigh coming out of him. "We lost all contact with the gunship as they got near the target zone. The only response being the Thunderhawk's Emergency Beacon automated rescue request."

Xerril stops looking at the hologram to stare at members of the squad."Your task, Brothers, is to discover what happened down there, rendezvous with any surviving members and complete their mission. The first step is to search and destroy whatever attacked the Thunderhawk. You will be deployed with a Razorback and Whirlwind artillery support by Brother Achemus of the Imperial Fists here." He motions for the Space Marine besides him, who nods silently in response. "Any questions?"

The forge master listens patiently to the squad's questions, paying special attention when Lorne asks about the lack of a larger response. "We are far away from the Achilus Crusade's fronts and Deathwatch is already stretched thin in this Sector. There are more... obvious threats in region, like the Tau expansion in The Black Reef or Hive Fleet Dagon heading towards the Orpheus Salient. It is difficult to convince the fools in the Imperial Guard to spare available forces to support this operation. But know this, all other threats will pale in comparison to the capabilities of a fully awakened tomb world. This can be considered an unofficial objective of this operation: Find evidence of the extent of the Necron threat in their tombs, so I can convince and request additional support for whatever lies ahead."

Xerill stops staring at the Storm Warden and looks down at his data-slate. "I sent eight Iron Hands down to escort the Magos, two of them being devastators, their main vehicle being a standard Rhino. If you find survivors, regroup with them and report back. If there are none, I entrust Brother Driscol to recover their gene-seeds." He finishes it without missing a beat nor displaying any kind of emotion.

"Report immediately after securing the region and reaching the downed Thunderhawk, you'll get your orders about the energy signal there. Now to the final details." He presses a different button on the holo table and an advanced tactical map appears.

Lorne puts his helmet back on muttering something under his breath about how it is stupid not to crash down on this place with overwhelming force, other threats be damned. "Well I can snipe a tank, or Necron bug-thingie, from a kilometer away, I should take something to deal with them if they come close. Anyone want my heavy bolter?"

Taking a melta gun for [20], with a red dot laser sight for [10] and a demo charge [10]. I'm taking my signature wargear lascannon. If someone whats my standard issue heavy bolter, feel free.

As for leader, I vote for either our librarian or apothecary so we can take oath of knowledge and select the Necrons as the target to get the +10 WS/BS bonus.

BLOOD ANGEL: DESCENT OF ANGELS
Type: Active
Required Rank: 3
Effects: Since their founding, the Blood Angels have
employed attack craft like the Thunderhawk and Stormraven,
and equipment like Jump Packs, to strike their foes from above.
In emulation of their winged Primarch, they excel at airborne
assaults, striving to perfect this form of warfare. Once per game
session, a Blood Angel with a Jump Pack may declare that he is
performing a Descent of Angels at the start of a combat. For a
number of rounds equal to the Battle-Brother’s Rank, he gains
the Flyer (18) Trait, and counts as having rolled a 10 for his
Initiative roll for the duration of the combat.
Improvements: At Rank 5 and above, the Battle-Brother’s
first attack during the combat causes the target to be Stunned
for 1 Round if the attack roll passes by 2 or more Degrees. At
Rank 7 and above, on any round in which the Blood Angel
has moved using his Jump Pack, enemies suffer a –20 penalty
on all Attack Rolls against him.

SPACE WOLVES: HERO'S SAGA

Effects: The people of Fenris have a long and proud tradition
of storytelling, recounting their history in the tales of their
heroes, and the Space Wolves are no different, with every
Battle-Brother seeking to forge a great saga of triumph,
honour, and heroism over the course of their long lives.
When taking an Oath with his Kill-Team, the Battle-Brother
may swear his own oath, a promise of his future accomplishments
and the saga that comes from them. While under this oath, the
Battle-Brother will strive all the harder to achieve his personal
goal. The sagas that the Battle-Brother could aspire towards
are listed below—one, and only one, should be chosen before
each mission. Each oath grants a benefit, but also comes with
a requirement, and if this is not fulfilled, the Battle-Brother’s
honour and skill will be in question, tarring his reputation and
reducing his Renown by 1d5 at the end of the mission.
Improvements: This ability does not improve with rank.

Saga of the Bear
The Battle-Brother has the determination and endurance of the
great Ice Bears of Fenris; even the mightiest of blows cannot
lay him low. A number of times during the mission equal to
half the Battle-Brother’s rank (rounding up), he may reduce the
amount of damage suffered from a single hit, after deductions
from Toughness Bonus and Armour, by half, rounding up.
Visit Fury Upon The Evil Ones: The might of the Sons
of Russ must be demonstrated for all to see; during the mission,
the Battle-Brother must deal the killing blow to a single Master
creature, or slay single-handed three Elite creatures.

Saga of the Warrior Born
The Battle-Brother slays with unrelenting fury, the blood
coating his blade only inspiring greater ferocity. A number of
times equal to the Battle-Brother’s rank, he may gain a +10
bonus to hit in Melee for every enemy he slew in the previous
turn, and/or a +1 bonus to hit for every point of Magnitude
he removed from an enemy Horde.
Reap a Great Tally: Many foes must fall to the Battle-
Brother’s blade. The Battle-Brother must slay at least 10
individual enemies, or inflict at least 30 points of Magnitude
damage (or some combination of the two: 3 magnitude is, in
this case, counted as equal to a single enemy slain), and these
kills must occur in melee.

Saga of the Beastslayer
Many tales have been told of heroes triumphing against
monstrous foes, and many Space Wolves seek out such
prey to prove their might. A number of times equal to the
Battle-Brother’s rank, he may re-roll an attack roll made
against a target (creature or vehicle) that is Enormous or
larger or which has a Toughness Bonus of 10 or higher.
This does not have to be a failed attack roll—the Battle-
Brother could re-roll a successful roll in the hopes of
scoring more Degrees of Success.
Fear Not the Beast: To demonstrate that he does not fear
such mighty foes, the Battle-Brother must deal the killing
blow to at least one enemy that is Enormous or larger or
which has a Toughness Bonus of 10 or higher.

BLACK TEMPLARS: NO RESPITE , NO FORGIVENESS

Type:Active
Required Rank: 3
Effects: The fervent anger and indomitable determination
of the Black Templars often drives them forward all the
faster against insurmountable odds or heavy fire, such things
serving only to enrage the Black Templars and incite them
to deliver retribution. Once per combat as a Free Action, a
Battle-Brother of the Black Templars Chapter may activate
this ability at the start of his Turn. While under the effects
of No Respite, No Forgiveness, the Battle-Brother may use
his Reaction when targeted by an enemy ranged attack
(before the attack is made, but after it has been declared) to
move up to his Agility Bonus in metres towards the nearest
enemy. The Battle-Brother must move a minimum of one
metre for this Ability to take effect. His wrathful mien
and apparent heedlessness for danger cause the attacker
to hesitate, imposing a –10 penalty on their attack roll. If
the Battle-Brother has multiple reactions, he may only use
one of them each turn to move in this way. No Respite,
No Forgiveness lasts for a number of Rounds equal to the
Battle-Brother’s Rank.
Improvements: At Rank 5 and above, the penalty imposed
upon the enemy attack is increased to –20. At Rank 7 and
above, the maximum distance he can move is increased to
twice the Battle-Brother’s Agility Bonus in metres.

DARK ANGELS: STORM OF VENGEANCE

Type:Active
Required Rank: 3
Effects: While the Dark Angels adhere to the tenets of the
Codex Astartes (for the most part) and are capable of utilising
a wide range of tactics, a withering hail of bolter fire is a
time-honoured tradition and one frequently used by the Dark
Angels. Once per combat, the Battle-Brother may unleash a
Storm of Vengeance when making a Semi-auto Burst, Full-
Auto Burst, Overwatch or Suppressing Fire action. If the
attack hits, the Battle-Brother gains two bonus Degrees of
Success on the attack roll.
Improvements: At Rank 5 and above, all attempts to
Dodge a Storm of Vengeance attack suffer a –20 penalty. At
Rank 7 and above, the number of bonus Degrees of Success
increases to three.

STORM WARDEN: TANK COMMANDER
Type:Passive
Required Rank: 3
Effects: The Battle-Brother is skilled in the operation of
heavy combat vehicles, from Rhino APCs to mighty Land
Raiders and earth-shattering Vindicators, and can allow
his adamantium steed to elude and endure the fire of the
enemy. If a vehicle the Battle-Brother is driving is attacked,
he may attempt to Dodge without the usual penalty for the
vehicle’s size; if successful, the attack counts as striking
the vehicle’s front armour.
Improvements: At Rank 5 and above, the Battle-
Brother’s skill at firing on the move is such that all the
vehicle’s weapons are considered to benefit from the
Auto-Stabilised Trait. At Rank 7 and above, the Battle-
Brother can deliver death from a tank’s weapons with
remarkable precision, adding +10 to his Ballistic Skill
when firing a vehicle-mounted weapon.

Devastator Lorne of the Storm Wardens


Having received his gear from the armory, Lorne heads down to the docking bay. He sees the Razorback before him and removes his helmet and gauntlets. He places a hand on the black painted vehicle and runs it along its length. He closes his eyes and speaks aloud as he does so, not caring who, if anyone, might hear.

"Razorback Armored personnel carrier. Based off the Rhino chassis. Capable of fielding a top mounted turret, smaller than a Predator tank's main turret. Standard Tilvius pattern uses twin linked heavy bolters for anti-infantry suppression, though this appears to be a Mark VIII configuration including twin linked lascannons and a pintle-mounted storm bolter."

He opens up the side hatch to peer inside and continues speaking to himself, "The vehicle uses a Quad MkII Adaptable Thermic Combustor Reactor that can push all 31 tons of vehicle to a cruising speed of up to 70 Kilometers per hour. With room for six marines and their gear, and remote firing for the main turret, this vehicle is the best way to get around the battlefield next to a Land Raider. When you absolutely need to get a squad somewhere and kill stuff along the way, accept no substitutes."

Lorne gives out a small sigh and replaces his gauntlets, and then his helmet, before climbing aboard. He puts his Lascannon and meltagun in one of the overhead racks. He enters the cramped driving compartment and takes a seat, leaning his claymore nearby. He straps in and begins the Rites of Awakening, preparing the vehicle for the arrival of the rest of his brothers.

Marcus piles into the Razorback like a dog excited about going for an Emperor approved car ride. Putting the just acquired auto-sense goggles on, he fiddles with them, zooming in close on Lorne's nose. "You need a trim, Brother," he comments, gesturing towards one of his own nostrils by way of explaination.

He flips the goggles to enable video capture, beginning to narrate as he sweeps across the interior. "Mission Log, Entry 1. Deathwatch Brother Marcus recording. Time is...1400 Sovereign. I'm in the Razorback now, soon to be deployed. The rest will be loading up shortly."

He zooms in on the Lascannon, and then down to his Power Fist as he holds his hand up, and then over to Eyjolf.

"Smile, Brother! You're on camera."

He hopes that he will not need to use them to harvest a fallen brother's geneseed, but better prepared for the worst. He takes a seat and rests his newly acquired storm shield against his knees and seals his helmet.

Tech-marine Raknavalak has chosen the Oath of butts Knowledge. Everyone gets +10 to WS and BS against any kind of Necrons. Your available squad mode abilities are Go to Ground, Dig In and Strongpoint.

After the Kill-Team chooses their sacred equipment for the perilous mission, they head to the hangar bay where they begin to familiarize themselves with the Razorback as they enter it. Servitors run back and forth preparing and arming the Thunderhawk Transporter and the yellow Whirlwind, everything is checked thoroughly under the careful management of Forge Master Xerril. Brother Achemus of the Imperial Fists appears with Xerril and heads towards his own vehicle, doing one last ammunition check for the Vengeance mark missile launcher.

Finally the Thunderhawk is positioned towards the immense hangar gates that separates it from deep space. Lorne carefully drives the Razorback beneath the gunship and the Whirlwind follows suit. A *CLANK* noise is heard by the cramped marines as the Thunderhawk's magnetic clamps sticks to the vehicles. Red lights and warnings go off as servitors and human serfs evacuate the area. "The Emperor Protects. Purge the Alien, my Brothers!" voxes Xerril before he closes the comm channel and hurries out of the hangar bay. The hangar gates slowly opens as the Thunderhawk starts its powerful engines and starts lifting off. When the gates are fully open the gunship exits the Sword of Intolerance and heads towards the dead world.

ON THE SURFACE

After the expected heavy shaking as the Thunderhawk entered Sovereign's atmosphere, the landing thankfully proceeded smoothly with no enemy contact so far. The gunship's magnetized arms are raised and the vehicles are freed. The Thunderhawk starts flying once again as it returns to the atmosphere, its mission of safely transporting the Kill-Team completed.

Lorne starts the Razorback engine and drives towards the Iron Hawk Thunderhawk's coordinates, with the Whirlwind following a good distance behind. On the way the squad notices a couple things: The visibility is terrible with constant sandstorms; and the air is extremely toxic, a by-product of the Exterminatus Sovereign suffered a century ago.

After two hours of driving with absolutely nothing happening some of the marines start getting restless. It all stops when the sandstorm starts calming down and the Kill-Team can see a small ruined imperial city ahead of them, and more importantly, a circular Necron structure supporting a green glowing crystal right in the middle of the city.



Zahariel immediately recognizes it as one of the dreaded Necron Pylons, defensive structures with devastating firepower against air-units. A single shot of its Gauss Annihilator could easily destroy a Thunderhawk, formidable as the gunship is.

With the primary target found, the Razorback changes direction and slowly heads into the city, most of it in ruins with rubble and destruction everywhere. Brother Achemus in his Whirlwind opens a channel between the vehicles. "Whirlwind standing by, ready to unleash righteous devastation." As they get closer to target, the familiar sounds of autocannon and bolter fire are heard, as is the whip cracking of Gauss weaponry.



The blue thing in lower left corner is the Razorback. It's not actually blue.
Grey stuff are roads/streets, Brown are buildings, they are 10 meters high, a marine with a jump pack can easily jump to any of them. Very light brown is just plain dirt/ground. The black thing northeast of you is obviously the Necron Pylon, it is 30 meters high and has a ramp leading to it. The brown sticks near it are cover made from rubble.

Because I'm lazy/dumb and only know how to use paint to do anything, including fog of war, just imagine you can only see stuff down the street and to your right.

Also you're still in Narrative Time so no worrying about tactical speed, until you encounter enemy forces of course.

edit: I was asked about Whirlwind ammunition so here are the stats:

As they reach the pylon's outskirts, Lorne brings the Razorback to an idle. That's pretty much it. I can stay with the tank and put these sweet lascannons to work, or someone else can drive and gun while I go out with my own lascannon and

I am perfectly fine with either option.

Raknavalak

Popping out of the upper hatch of the Razorback, the tech-marine keeps his servo-arm folded up against his back as he surveys the city. He holds his hand down inside the Razorback for a pair of magnoculars. Rakanavalak skims along the city line, zooming in where he can to get a better feel for things; the source of the shooting is obviously coming from the pylon.

"Hrm."

The forgemaster ducks back into the razorback and pulls a dataslate out, bringing up a satellite snapshot of the city and marking the general location of where he believes the pylon to be, as well as the location of the Razorback. "We are here, and we presume the enemy is here, where the sound of combat is coming from. By the sounds of it, the combatants may be Imperial, but I would not rule out greenskins." He pauses for a moment, his brow furrowing. "I specialize in reconnaissance and stealth when it comes to these sorts of operations, brothers; I can see routes to safely determine what we will be up against and whether we will have allies or foes, but the attack approach I would leave to one such as Marcus."

"For now, I suggest we stick together; alone we are strong, but together our might is immeasurable against our foes. Once we know what we face, a pincer with Brother Lorne and the vehicle attacking from different vectors would be intelligent indeed."

Rolling Tactics (Recon and Stealth) to see if I can't figure out a good route where we can sneak up and get a good look at poo poo. Testing against 60 I think.

Marcus the Scout

Raknavalak opts for getting some recon before planning how to proceed to the enemy zone and sends Marcus ahead to scout. The assault marine quickly disembarks of the Razorback and heads northeast through the alleys, hearing more gunfire as he goes forward. He slowly walks inside one of the abandoned buildings and heads upstairs where he can see a more broad vision of the battlefield.

Confirming the suspicion of the tactical marine earlier, Marcus can see a heavy fight between Traitor Marines and defending Necrons. He can see one of them in Terminator armor and another one with robes in the middle of channeling something. A battered Predator is providing covering fire to them. The Necrons respond with gauss and tesla weaponry from Immortals and large groups of Warriors. It seems that additional reinforcements are being summoned to protect the Pylon as a small pack of clawed necrons covered in skin comes from beneath the ground, while one of their mysterious vehicles starts turning from the north to join the fight.

Marcus's advanced goggles transmit the received data to the Razorback, but before he does anything else he hears a sharp noise coming from the abandoned building on the other side of the street. A square portal to another dimension appears as a cyclopean machine with a huge rifle walks through it, the portal quickly closing afterwards. Edit: Concealment Roll passed! Marcus quickly hides in the rubble around him, the necron sniper failing to spot him as he looks around for any hostiles.

Inside the Razorback, the tactical map is updated with the latest data.



Red = Chaos Marines
Big Red = Chaos Terminator
Red and Orange = Chaos Sorcerer
Green = Immortals
Light Green = Horde of Necron Warriors, each 40 magnitude
Green and Brown = Flayed Ones
Green and White = Deathmarks

Devastator Lorne of the Storm Wardens


Lorne looks at the updated tactical readout on his helmet's HUD. He looks back at the rest of the group in the Razorback, "Not to sound like a coward, but it is a rare day when the Enemies of Man do our work for us. Why not let them duke it out, the rush in and kill the weakened survivor?" He punctuates his question with a shrug of his armored shoulders.

"Though if you want to be foolish, we could drive up the next street and put some lascannon shots into the rear of that predator."

"I would worry more about the necron vehicle than the predator. Suggest we manoeuvre into position to put lascannon shots into that. I also suggest we call in the Whirlwind strike and engage as soon as we're in position. The necrons can regenerate quickly enough for the traitors to not be able to inflict significant damage to their forces, and as long as that pylon is there, they will keep getting reinforcements. We need to destroy that pylon before they call in heavier support."

The tech-marine's fists clench as he hears who the foes are, and he turns redder than Marcus' pauldron at the notion of letting traitors go without even a single engagement. "Are you all insane? The ONE TRUE FOE is in front of us, and you say 'let them duke it out!?'" He slams his fist against the interior of the razorback, his eyes blazing.

"Brother Marcus! Describe their armor and clothing to me! I will know our foe, and then I will bring the Emperor's Fury to them for all that they have done, to our Primarchs and the Astartes, and the Imperium of Man!"
