Zoka

Sitting in the shaded corner and staring incredulously at the choices laid out before them, Zoka began to wonder if perhaps they wouldn't have been better off just staying in the empire after all. And that wasn't even getting into the, well, "races" they'd be traveling with. At least he was okay with dryads and unicorns, as the elves had plenty of interactions with them both. But the others? Well, he'd heard tales of peaceful orcs, but judging by this one, this specific tribe didn't seem the type. Best he could hope for was that they'd be able to keep the violence in check for now. As for the final one, he could only shake his head again. Animated skeletons counted as a "race" now? He could only hope that, given that they were sentient, perhaps they'd be reasonable.

Sighing, he leaned forward to offer his own contribution to the discussion. He might dislike the choices, but might as well make sure it was something they could at least tolerate. Since the unicorn and skeleton already seemed to be at odds, he might as well try his hand at being the mediator. "First off, if we're working together for now we should likely introduce ourselves first, as I certainly don't want to have to be going 'Hey, unicorn!' when I need your attention. With that said, I am known as Zoka Balsim. Given we're all apparently supposed to work together for now, we can mark off some places immediately, simply due to the presence of her." With a gesture of his hand he indicates the dryad, and her tree. Much as we would not mind either the underground or the glacier, I'm fairly sure trees don't exactly fare terribly well in either place. Depending on the type of tree you use, I certainly can't tell, the desert may be out as well. Personally, I despise sand myself, so I won't be picking that either. Banshee's Rock, on the other hand, may be a decent choice as would Behemoth's Basin or Mt. Thunderlizard, though in the latter case I'd advise we try to make a pact with one of the powers in the area as there are too many for us to simply presume to avoid them all."

Deciding to just go with it for now, joins in. "I'm narrowing down my own choices to either the island or the mountain, as upon reflection the swamp sounds like a terrible idea."

Looking over the items, he first points out the most obvious thing. "We can't take the rope, boat and spike, that puts us over our total, at least unless you're willing to overlook the overage." The last part is directed at Professor Kraken. "Besides, I'd argue that we don't need the rope. The spike will be incredibly useful, and possibly the boat depending on where we decide upon, but I feel another good choice is the Cauldron. We don't yet know what we'll need there, and there are a bunch of alchemical creations that could come in handy."

Did Waador already say Boat/Rope/Spike was okay? Because that takes us over 12,000 gp in items spent.

Regardless, I'm looking at the Spike/Cauldron/?, or Spike/Boat/? if we're on the island. Maybe the bridge in the first case. Wagons can't cross it, but it could be useful for simple exploring.

"Never a better time to learn." He dryly replies. "In all seriousness, I do have someone in camp with alchemical skills, but I haven't gotten around to learning myself."

Looking at the rope, he frowns. "While you make a decent point, we'd also likely need much more than 100' of rope to do so. After taking into account the feet needed to safely secure one, plus the amount needed at the top to allow enough people to pull, that 100' starts dwindling rapidly and you'll need to use additional nonmagical rope anyways. Plus that, while it can likely hold one, you'd still have to build a structure at the top of the cliff to actually allow one to clear the edge."

Noting that everyone seemed to just be talking around the issue, with no definitive responses, he decides to cut to the heart of the matter. "While I'm sure we could sit around a while long discussing the merits of the various places, opinions don't seem to particularly changing, so let's just put it to a vote. Besides, Professor Kraken seems to be getting a little impatient." With that he gestures to their host, who seems to be tapping a foot.

Reaching into a pouch, he hesitates for a moment and then brings out a sheaf of paper and a pen, followed by an inkwell. Setting them down in front of himself, Zoka twirls the quill before dipping it in. "In the interest of keeping it simple, and because one of you can't even write, I'll record the votes. Just give me your top 3 choices in sequential order. Feel free to give me your favored magic items at the same time if you wish, or we can hold a second vote after this one. Whenever you're ready."

Okay, just to get this moving, I'm asking everyone to list their top 3 places. As much flavor text as you want, but please list them in italics at the bottom as well. I'll be scoring them as 1st is worth 3 points, 2nd is worth 2 points, and 3rd is worth 1 point. Unless there are any radical objections, we'll go with the one with the highest point total.

I'd prefer you give them to me in the format:
1st: Something
2nd: Something
3rd: Something

but that's mainly for readability purposes.

Just sighing and ignoring the dumb remark from the orc, as well as the dumb arrogant remark from the overgrown horse, Zoka finishes writing down everyone's votes and takes a moment to mentally tally points before adding his own. Part of making sure you got something tolerable for yourself was ensuring you had the deciding vote, after all. Silently thanking the elders' foresight in shoving him through several diplomatic classes before sending him on this journey, he marked down his own vote.

"Okay Professor, it looks like we've chosen our destination." Handing over the tallied paper, he continues. "Overall, the consensus seems that we will go to the jungle island, Banshee's Rock. As for magic items, that's still up for consideration as only two of us, three with myself, have stated our preferences.

My personal arguments are for the spike, as not only could it conceal a small scouting group, but it could also be used to conceal the entrance to a livable area, if we can find one with a reasonably narrow entrance. That should be reasonably plausible to do on an island filled with canyons and crags.

I'd also vote for the Cauldron, as it could help with alchemical creations in the long term, and helping with various other things in the short term.

The boat could be useful but I'm somewhat dubious. Given the pirates around the isle, and it simply being a normal boat that can be miniaturized, it's possible that anyone on it would run into them. That should only be done on our terms and, if it is, we may be able to acquire a ship of our own anyways."

To list my choices:
1st: Banshee's Rock
2nd: Mt. Thunderlizard
3rd: Behemoth Basin

Final Scores:
1st: Banshee's Rock - 9 points
2nd: Black Forest - 8 points
3rd: Behemoth Basin - 6 points
4th: Mt. Thunderlizard - 5 points
5th: Darklands - 2 points

Feel free to double-check my math, but I'm pretty sure that's correct.

As for items, my top two picks are:
1st: Iron Spike of Safe Passage
2nd: Cauldron of Brewing

Didn't actually set up a scoring system for them, and their wasn't any real consensus on the top items, so they're still up for debate.

Just keep in mind that the boat alone takes up 7200 out of the 12000, leaving merely 4800 left, so you're really only going to get one other item out of the ones listed as desired if you take it.

Zoka

Looking at the image of the type of storms the island occasionally received, Zoka's expression didn't particularly change, but his flat tone certainly hinted at his displeasure. "Lovely, just a little rain to deal with. And no Sieversii, my group has no real problem with daylight. By nature we prefer the shadows, but working under the sun isn't a hindrance. The orcs on the other hand..." Trailing off, and with a look at their king to elaborate, he turned to the other immediate matters. "As for where to set up permanent residence, I'd agree that this is a terrible place. Perhaps somewhere to keep lookouts in the future, but much too exposed to any number of things to actually live here. Preferentially we want a high area of the island significantly inland with decent cover, though whether that cover is caves or a heavily forested area can be considered later based on what we find while exploring. I'd suggest a secluded valley, but given the amount of rain that picture implies, that's just asking for a flash flood."

Pausing for a moment, he continues. "As for water, this place likely has enough small streams that water should not be too much of a concern. While a river is certainly good, they also have a tendency to be significantly more traveled, both by any native predators and any visitors. Doesn't mean we shouldn't consider the sources, of course, but I don't think it's the number one priority in this type of terrain.

As for direction, I'd say we move everyone off this hill for the moment, and then take a party and go exploring somewhat directly inland." Pausing, he's suddenly struck with another, horrifying, thought. Turning to Kraken, he brings it up casually. "By the way, I've heard of islands like these being created by volcanism. I don't suppose you know if this was created by that process or, if it was, if it's still active?"

What higher elevations can we see from where we currently are? Like can we tell where the tallest point on the island and/or its surrounding pinnacles are.

Pausing, he considered Szandra's suggestion for a moment before nodding. "That sounds acceptable. Though I'd somewhat prefer to move directly inland to get away from the shore quickly, it does admittedly make sense to find a geographical landmark we can follow. As long as we move inland and away from the coast in the next few days, that should be fine."

Zoka

Looking up from the annotations he was making in one of the record books his group was keeping, Zoka let out a sigh. So many little things he'd never known the elders kept track of, and now he was supposed to know the details of what had been taken care of by an entire council previously. Sure, he specialists knew their areas better than him, and he could ask for their advice regarding their areas of expertise, but it was ultimately him who had to set the priorities and issue orders.

Standing up and peering out of his private tent, he watched as the final sections of their evening camp were constructed. They'd just barely arrived and there was already multiple things to accomplish. It'd be inadvisable to accomplish them now, but they still had to be noted for the long term. He'd already annotated orders regarding those snakes, for example. Whenever they decided on a permanent camp, one of the hunters or initiates were to hunt down one and take it safely, alive if possible, or dead if not. Examining it for toxicity, as well as having someone examine the plants to find those that would work for that aspect of their profession, was at least a low-level, but still necessary concern.

Pulling out the next paper, he almost laughed. No, he certainly had no problem with the request to travel in U-formation, as those damnable bugs were irritating the hells out of the entire group. If the unicorns had any complaints, perhaps they should simply be reminded how they needed to work with the group for the benefit of all. Alternatively, given that the bugs were repelled by the innate anathema to evil aura they emitted, make a mention of how they were voluntarily leaving others they were traveling with at the mercy of innately evil creatures.

Glancing at Skullguy, Zoka considered his response. "Given distance, it would certainly be advisable to make camp rather than find our way back, and a cave is certainly a better place to bivouac than in the middle of a clearing. The only issue is whether it has a rear entrance or not, as that could be considered both an advantage and disadvantage. We wouldn't be in danger of becoming trapped, like in a cave with only an entrance, but we'd also have an additional path to be cautious of. While picking a cave to hole up in overnight is sound, there is the question of that. What are the thoughts of the rest of you?"

Lord Koth
Jan 8, 2012

Zoka

Having no particular knowledge regarding anything magical, Zoka simply keeps a wary eye on the proceedings from slightly farther back than Szandra suggested. Trying to relieve his boredom, he takes a look around. After all, with everyone seemingly intent on the symbol, it would certainly be a shame should something sneak up on them. Or just take a better look at the wildlife, he'd always liked bird-watching after all.

Zoka

Well he'd been intending on getting those plants and berries checked at some point anyways, so watching and waiting to see if anything happened to Skullguy was certainly a quick an easy way to determine if they were safe or not. As such, Zoka simply looked on with interest.

"So, how do they taste?"

No action from me, for I'm quite happy with the orc testing them as it saves my tribe some effort.

Lord Koth
Jan 8, 2012

Zoka

After some careful analysis of the incident in front of him, Zoka concluded that the plant Skullguy had been chewing on was not, in fact, edible. He took a mental note to have someone examine it for possible use as an ingested toxin though, as the orc had seemed to be in bliss for a moment before it started killing him.

Clueless over how to help in this situation, he started to move to help Sieversii with her task, before realizing that Skullguy didn't seem to be taking her advice over trying to spit it back up to heart, and quickly seemed to be progressing in a way that he couldn't. Deciding that would be a more applicable use of his talents, he waited until Uru'vi backed of confusedly over the failure of his, presumably anti-poison, spell before quietly sidling up to one side of the curled up orc. He proceeded to quickly, and with no warning, deal a sharp blow to Skullguy's stomach, hopefully forcing him to wretch.

"Sorry about that, but our expert did say to induce vomiting."

Dealing an unarmed strike, with sneak attack, to Skullguy's stomach. I can roll if you want, but average damage would be 10 subdual(1d3(2) + 2d6(7) + 1).

Lord Koth
Jan 8, 2012

Zoka

"No problem at all," was Zoka's dry response to Skullguy, though somewhat distracted by the strange sight before him. As to where they would stay the night, "Last time I checked, there were some perfectly usable caves in that direction. Perhaps it's just me, but I'd rather not take a nap surrounded by potentially ambulatory liquids. Or is what I just saw," with a gesture to the mess, "just an illusion?"

Lord Koth

Zoka

A displacer beast?

Feeling mildly ill, Zoka couldn't help but wonder if he'd have been better off using a blade instead of a fist. This was the second time in ten minutes that Skullguy was causing an incident, and this time it could have repercussions for their tribes. While he didn't have specialized knowledge, he at least knew of displacer beasts, and they certainly weren't the kind of thing you'd want angry with you and silently stalking camp on the outskirts. Still maybe, maybe, this would turn out in their favor, so he'd refrain from anything rash for the moment.

"Regardless of the fact that I'd say leaving the local inhabitants alone for the moment would have been much more preferable, it's probably too late for that now. So yes, going with Szandra's plan seems the most reasonable at this point. Just, let's have multiple individuals on watch, okay? And find a cave with only one entrance."

Lord Koth
Jan 8, 2012

Zoka

"This is where I point out that the entire point of choosing a cave is so that we have a clearly defined entrance/exit point so that nothing can sneak up on us, and so as to provide a chokepoint. Instead, you're not only advocating we split up, but go hang out in trees that the predatory big magical cats can likely climb significantly better than you can. Ones that, if this one's features grow proportionately as it gets larger, have tentacles to knock you out of said tree with from a significant distance away. And do it while surrounding you as well. Need I mention that unicorns aren't exactly renowned for their climbing prowess either, so Uru'vi would either have to use the cave or just snooze in an open field?" Diplomacy forgotten in the string of "interesting" comments and decisions being made recently, Zoka acidly commented on the suggestion to go climb trees.

He didn't even feel pointing out the fact that the distance between the cave and trees made support between the two spotty at best was even necessary, as suggesting hiding from magical six-legged cats in trees was already ridiculous.

Err, if Waador's okay with that it's fine KittyEmpress, but you seem to have skipped actually confirming that crit. Also, and not as important but technically how it works, you only double flat numbers. A crit just modifies the number of dice rolled, it doesn't double the damage of your initial roll. So a successful crit in this case would be 4d8 + 16, not 2d8 doubled + 16.

edit: Also, and not related to the above, could someone toss me a link to the IRC host? I've switched computers and don't remember what it was.

Well, that had been unexpected. Both the cat out of nowhere and Uru'vi almost killing it in a single blow. Briefly debating getting involved in the scuffle, Zoka decided against it. Given that it was already almost dead, it would likely be a simple task for the others to finish it off easily enough, and he'd prefer not to break weapons or get himself injured when it was unnecessarily. Besides, if there were any more he'd prefer not to be covered with the blood of that one. That said, he'd prefer not to explain his logic to the others, and it wouldn't hurt to be prepared for anything else in the near future, so he chose to blend into the darkness of the night, moving behind a tree to provide even more concealment.

Struck with a sudden thought, he stepped behind the dryad to quietly converse with her. "Hey, you can talk with animals and stuff right? Think you could slightly heal the big cat here and cut a deal with it? I'm sure Uru'vi and Szandra can occupy that crystal thingy. It's probably the two magic users anyways."

Seeing one of the likely instigators of this mysterious crystalline thing running away from it, Zoka decided to follow her lead. Besides, the other two were more interested in killing rather than conversing with the supposedly intelligent pack animal, so he didn't feel like still being here if another one, or more, of said pack showed up.

Having no real desire to be anywhere near the loud, obnoxious, and arrogant unicorn, especially when it was covered with the blood of a creature that apparently lived in packs and likely had a good sense of smell, Zoka continued in the direction of the cave. Sure, the orc was loud and obnoxious, but that was still one less. The fact that the Uru'vi also wasn't particularly subtle in the slightest and had just loudly announced his presence to everything nearby also contributed to Zoka's decision. Who knows, maybe the shouting would draw the crystal in that direction?

Slipping out of the shadows next to Skullguy, Zoka responded quietly. "Uru'vi was saying something about leaving you two here on your own and heading back to camp. Frankly, I wasn't particularly listening other than to note that he was shouting, and thus announcing his position to everything nearby, and covered with the blood of an intelligent pack creature. Having no desire to be anywhere in the vicinity of a loud individual that glows to anyone with magesight and leaves a massive scent trail, I continued on my way. No idea what Sieversii is doing, other than to note that she put down that beast."

Staring blankly at Szandra's comment, Zoka felt the need to correct her. "Last time I checked, it was pretty clearly stated that the damned things are pack hunters, which means the one that attacked us was probably neither the only one in the area nor likely the only one looking for the kitten. Now there was a huge, and likely territorial, beast I'm fairly sure I spotted, but it also had wings and was in the distance. Oh, and don't forget the mysterious floating, glowing crystal you two mages somehow activated. Anyways, I suppose the answer to your question is that many fascinating things were found, but no decent spot for a camp yet."

Starting to walk towards the section of the camp where his group had mostly pitched tents, he tossed the answer to the other question over his shoulder, both to Professor Kraken and the others. "Oh, and the only thing I thing is crucial is the Cauldron, so feel free to choose whatever. The Spike might come in handy though."

Pausing for a moment to see if anyone calls him back for something, he proceeds to gather his healers and alchemist together in a tent.

Having spent a long time in discussion with his subleaders, Zoka felt he'd hacked together at least a decent temporary plan. Joining the other leaders in conference, he joined the conversation.

"Actually, that point about the mallet may be a decent one. My current thoughts were for the Iron Spike, as there's more than a few things we can do with an object that permanently conceals a small passage, and the Instant Bridge, as that nicely finishes off what we can take, and a quick bridge could be useful. The spike I'm fairly sure I want, but we could replace the bridge with the Mallet and something else, I suppose."

Marching orders are for the herbalists to carefully start investigating the various flora nearby on the island, for any properties they may have(And I do mean any). Looking for possible edible ones, as well as for medicinal use. I did warn them about the one plant we've already stumbled across, as well as the strange things that happened when it was spit up. Also, due to the pack animal situation, have suggested talking to the other camps and taking guards along-likely unicorns or orcs.

Tapping a foot against the ground thoughtfully, Zoka pondered the options the others had suggested. "I'm somewhat in agreement with Uru'vi on this one. Though reaching the peak would be useful for seeing the entire if the weather clears, we have no idea if it will or not. And if it doesn't that will have wasted another day. There's also the fact that there's at least one rather large flying creature on the island, and I'd imagine it would prefer peaks. I say we spend some time investigating these strange marks, while keeping an eye on the weather. If it seems to be starting to clear in a candlemark or so, we'll not have lost much time and should still have time to ascend. If not, well at least we'll have gotten something accomplished, and it's possible the cloud cover may thin at this lower altitude, thus at least giving us some idea of the area."

Zoka shrugs in indifference. The sky seemed like it was going to clear soon to him but he'd certainly never learned how to predict the weather, so he'd defer to those who actually lived outside for this decision.

Zoka

Incredulous once again at the orc just blithely wandering into likely hazardous areas with no regard for possible dangers, Zoka's even more clueless as to why Sieversii and Szandra were following him. Despited considering not following, a possible disappearance of most of their leaders would likely not look favorably on those returning, so he reluctantly followed. Disregarding their blase approach, he opted for a slower and stealthier one; something proved fortuitous given the giant snake they'd just wandered into. And of course Skullguy decided to ignore the blatant warning it had generously given him, proceeding to antagonize it instead.

As the loss of the orc would not particularly bother him, and maybe they'd elect someone with more common sense next time, he decided to instead skulk around the lower edge of the cave to see if there were any further threats of animate or inanimate nature in the immediate area. Maybe he'd help Skullguy out momentarily. Maybe.

I'll be sneaking around the bottom edge, and looking off to the right. Not going far, just making sure there's not something else about to appear or a hole likely to be missed in the middle of combat.

Suppressing his initial excitement as caution and cynicism took over, Zoka was looking the doors over carefully when Szandra wandered up. Besides, even if it was real, what were they going to spend huge piles of gold on, given their lack of access to any market? That said, he does dryly whisper back.

"I don't know what you're talking about. Clearly it's a giant treasure load just ripe for the picking. And in my infinite kindness, I was generously going to give Skullguy the chance to dive in first."

Moving out of the shadows, where he'd been keeping watch on the entrance, Zoka pulled some rope out of his pack and tossed it over. "Perhaps this would help? I mean, if you want to keep bumping against that giant slab feel free, but this may be quicker. Working together might help too. Just a thought." With that thinly veiled sarcasm out of the way, he moves back to the entrance. Closer, in fact, given that people are currently playing with chemicals and aren't entirely sure what the effects will be.

Once again taking up watch, this time right within the mouth of the cave, he takes a look out and sees if anything has changed.

Well, nothing particularly to do at the moment. Not a burly rock-moving type, not currently packing Liquid Ice, and I'm not checking for traps in a room with Brown Mold in it, some Cold Resistance or no. Instead, keeping as close to the entrance as possible, while still staying in cover, and watching for anything approaching. I'll be available to unlock the door though, when it comes to that.

Zoka's cheer at the work being done turns to barely concealed panic as he sees the gigantic shape gliding towards the cave. Taking a step back, and out of any line of sight the the outside he turns on his heel and rushes for the door. "All of you, get in here now! The likely owner has returned, and I'd rather not be here to greet him. Even if he does turn out to be amenable to discussion, this is neither the time or place; we have no negotiating position here."

Pulling his lockpicks out while scanning the door for traps, he pauses and looks over all of them, "And if any of you grabbed any gold from the piles, put it back. NOW!" Finishing with a glare at Skullguy, he continues, "I'd say put the sword back too, but I suspect I'll be overruled. Now, help me make sure there aren't any traps on this door"

Even as he finishes that command, he's already back to scanning the door and, after getting the all clear from the others(specifically Uru'vi and Sieversii), starts scanning the lock, figuring out the type of pick to use and how to go about this. Snapping on his extenders so his fingers don't have to be right next to the lock, he gets to work.

Search for traps, and get the others to as well(seriously who the gently caress moved finding traps to WIS?), and then, assuming there are none seen, go to work on the lock. Take 10 on the first attempt, before starting to roll. Total should be 22. Still staying within two feet of the lock though, so the Extender penalty doesn't come into effect.

Also, added Thieves's Tools and Extenders to my sheet, as I apparently forgot to list them, but there's no bloody way I wouldn't have them.

Not even looking up from his work Zoka responds to the unicorn. "I wouldn't be trying to get this door open if I thought we could simply rush out. It was on a glide lined up with the cave entrance when I saw it. Now, if you want to make a run down the cliff, likely in full view, be my guest. As for putting things back, it's more trying to show we didn't actually take anything, as opposed to pretending we were never here."

Groaning, Zoka sat up. Well, this is either some truly unique hell, or I guess I'm not dead. Guess I should be thankful for small miracles.

"So, anyone mind filling me in? Like what the hell that is, or why Uru'vi seems to have color-shifted on us? Last thing I remember is a sharp flash of pain." "That" being the weird brain-in-a-cage some of the others seemed to be talking to. Starting to stand up, he quickly leaned against a nearby wall, clutching his head. As far as he could tell he was completely intact, if bruised, but he had one killer of a headache.
