WELCOME ONCE AGAIN!

It's the TV/IV Star Trek Thread! Forty posts of white noise per page, 6 closet Voyager lovers, and the page 90 homoerotic image dump. Well, this thread is certainly worthy of our attention.

Let's get back into form.

In this here thread we'll talk about anything. It's a Star Trek focus of course, which holds the majority of discussion, but Trek is the kind of show that warrants and merits talk about other scifi franchises as well. Also there's been no good Trek for many years, unless you liked the JJ films and have already turned in your nerd card and submitted to the Pew-Pew Overlord. Cumberbatch is a loving snake.

We've got tons of Babylon 5 fans here, please note and respect Andreas Katsulas Supremacy. Farscape and Stargate SG1 are also great, depending on who you talk to. SG1 owns, by the way. Don't Hate the Gate, Mate!

Whatever your flavour, please don't just poo poo on someone's opinion and bundy out, hang around and smash out your thoughts! We've had some fantastic discussion on various topics over the years (a memorable few pages on the Treaty of Algeron and also on differing viewpoints regarding the Maquis comes to mind), we don't need to bitch about Voyager or vigorously defend the 3 good episodes of Enterprise for a hundred pages.

ALRIGHT LETS GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD

What actually goes on in this thread?

OH, THAT'S RIGHT:

THE ORIGINAL SERIES

TOS is absolutely fascinating. If you start right from the beginning, you get to see this weird time before it got settled into its own canon where none of the terminology was consistent. Then, you reach the highest of highs (Balance of Terror, holy poo poo) and you take a dive into an unflushed toilet (Spock's Brain).

Overall, TOS is great. gently caress any of the few remaining haters. Well worth checking out after you get a bit of TNG into you, and if you know and enjoy early Doctor Who then this is the right show for you.

THE NEXT GENERATION

I could never do better than this old post from a few threads ago:

Snak posted:

Think of how often we, the viewers, have seen members of starfleet accidentally make new life forms or even new sentient life. Like, people probably get up in the morning and misspeak into the replicator "computer, coffee-" "WHAT ARE YOU DOING DEAR?!" "REPLICATING COFFEE! WHY?" and computer thinks for a minute, decides that "coffee replicating coffee" means cups of coffee that can undergo mitosis. An hour later, after a few trips to sickbay they figure out the problem and fix it. poo poo like that. No big deal. Best reason to be late for a shift ever, good story to tell later. NOT WHEN ENTERPRISE SWINGS BY. Now you've got some bald guy asking if everything's okay and if they can't beam over to take a look because some dumb bitch on their bridge is "sensing confusion" and OF COURSE there's an android who points out that this qualifies as life and makes it his own personal crusade to compare every random artificial life form to himself! Now two weeks have gone by and the enterprise is long gone, but their temporary solution was to fill up both of your holodecks with colonies of self replicating coffee cups until you can learn to communicate with them or find a suitible habitate. You would just dump it in space and let if grow forever, but eventually someone would notice AND OF COURSE admiral Janeway has taken a personal interest and wants to be alerted at the first sign of intelligence so she can be the federation ambassador to the first sentient race of coffee GOD

You're going to want to watch seasons 2 to 6 of TNG, probably as the first thing you do in Trek before going on to the other shows. It was made for syndication, so unless it's a listed two-parter you can just jump in anywhere and watch a standalone episode. Hit me with your recommendations, so long as they include The Defector, Measure of a Man, The Drumhead, Cause and Effect, and The Best of Both Worlds. Newbies get in HERE

DEEP SPACE NINE

Where TNG builds Earth and the Federation as a utopia, DS9 slowly, methodically and brilliantly tears it apart. Turns out being permanently right on the frontier, light-years from assistance, and constantly neck-deep in poo poo will test your mettle from every direction.

DS9 is Best Trek, according to both myself and thread groupthink. Thing about DS9 is that while infrequent background characters get more development than almost any of the TNG main cast, there's also a few hosed up 'rest' episodes in there, which hope you really love the Ferengi and holographic crooners.

Start from the first episode and watch them in order, this time. First season is slow but honestly, stick with it. Definitely do TNG first so you understand the universe, just to get full appreciation for what's going on here.

VOYAGER

gently caress Voyager. Don't waste your time. I'm not going to waste my loving time writing about this horseshit. Don't get curious about Voyager. You don't need it in your life. Just go and watch Battlestar Galactica again.

ENTERPRISE

You're gonna find a lot of varying opinion about Enterprise. It's a prequel, set on the first ship fast enough for reasonable exploration of deep space. Why they decided to do a prequel is anyone's idea. Fair enough that they're shooting for a fresh start free of the existing universe, but my god man, if there's a way to gently caress it up, they found it in those first 2 seasons. It is not good television.

"some sort of… prime directive"

I mean, come the gently caress on, they haven't invented shields yet so instead of getting creative, they just do a find and replace in the script and use "Polarise the hull plating!" and "Hull plating at 60%!" gently caress you gently caress off.

It starts an upward curve for seasons 3 and 4, which are not bad and well worth checking out, but still it's entirely inferior to TNG and DS9 by quite a long way if you ask me, and basically uses the TNG formula at literally every point I can think of. Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks I guess.

The new Star Trek movies are the movies we deserve, but not the movies we want. They've taken some of the stigma away from saying the words "I watch Star Trek", because they immediately think of something that looked like a long ipad commercial instead of knowing you're talking about watching people act out space aliens on a set that looks like it was made with $80 worth of gray construction paper.

My favorite part about JJTrek is all the hack goon designers trying to tell me "the lines don't flow correctly" on the Enterprise without being able to explain to me what lines are or why they need to flow or why that matters in a design that is pretty impractical to begin with.

Riker: Put us on a collision course.
Wheaton: (With all the emotion of a kid being told to go clean his room) Yes sir.

I must be in the minority, having enjoyed both JJ films quite a lot. They are absolutely, entirely different from the rest of the franchise and goofy as all hell really, but they are pretty fun.

That said, I do think it's a time that the new Trek series shifts to a new director. From the very first time I saw Star Trek (JJ), my exiting remarks were "He really got the wrong franchise. He was meant to direct Star Wars." Then other people started saying it and when the new movies got announced, I even commented it'd be perfect if they got Abrhams for it. I was actually kind of shocked they did.

So yeah. I think that's why it's so decisive. JJ Trek is Star Trek through the filter of someone who really wishes they were directing Star Wars and is not shocking at all that he is doing just that, now.

Many good franchises have gone through multiple directors and I hope they continue the series under new leadership, maybe with an all new tone to boot.

EDIT: Hell, Red Letter Media did a pretty amusing mash up showing just how much Star Wars he really put into it.

I didn't say I didn't enjoy the movie's, I did, I am critical of them and I believe I am justified in that because they aren't particularly smart films. However the Nimoy appearance for me in the second movie just seemed hammed in and didn't add anything to the movie.

I would rather watch 2009 and STID over movies such as Nemesis or Insurrection everytime. Unlike the latter, the former films are entertaining and well produced. I would say STID was a huge downgrade compared to 2009 though and I mostly blame the writers rather than JJ but seeing as though JJ insists on using those writers for everything right now I guess he shares some of the fault and his departure is a good thing for the franchise, hopefully Orci will follow.

I thought it was a brilliant cameo. If they had brought on the Riker we all know, the episode would have had to grind to a halt while they clearly give the big guest star tons of screen time and have to structure a plot that somehow involves them.

By using the other Riker they were able to get a Frakes appearance and dispense with all of that, and could focus entirely on the plot. It was entirely non-disruptive or ham fisted, which I can't say for, say, Bashir's appearance on DS9.

Then again they also tackled this problem expertly with Picard in the pilot, by making Sisko hate his guts. It was incredibly unexpected and hacked out that "Cameo nostalgia factor sucking up" instantly, too.
