I haven't been paying as close attention as I did in the runup to FM3 and FM4, so I apparently missed the bit about "no unicorns." What have they said so far about that? They just didn't like it any more?

There are no gift cars in career mode. Cars don't unlock when you level up. You have to grind (or pay MTX) for in-game cash in order to buy all cars.
