Blizzard tech support and Google are being super unhelpful in solving my issue of the download being unable to be properly authorized. I had my friend send me his game files so I can play over Hamachi fine but I'd really like to get back on battle.net--I have seen online conflicting reports as to whether or not changing the CD key on an install is possible. To be totally clear, I do have a legit license for the game (I've bought it at least three times) and a legit CD key sitting unused, but the game was installed with a different key. How can I change it to the legit one?

Battle net won't let me download the game. I don't see an entry in the registry for a CD key either although several different forums threads have implied its possible. I think it's in an MPQ file myself--the only option I csn think of would be to download a third party cd key switcher, but that's risky. Wanted to see if there were any known workarounds.

It will not authorize the download even though Bnet recognizes it as a valid key. They do some sort of validation after you download the launcher. My computer or network is for whatever reason failing that authorization even though the key and download is valid.

War3s cdkey/product key is definitely not in the registry. It is stored encrypted in war3.mpq, I thiiiiink maybe in the header or maybe it was tacked on at the end or something I forget. But it's not in a file archived within the MPQ. (MPQ is an archive format like ZIP or RAR, as you probably figured out on google.) Back when I was into war3 modding (literally ten loving years ago) as far as I can recall nobody was interested in working out how it was encrypted in order to replace it. I believe the offset of the cdkey was located but I don't think anyone back then took it any further than that. Kind of a solution wanting for a problem when you can just install/reinstall with whatever cdkey you want. Heh. So uh. Any chance you can get a hold of a physical copy on CDs perhaps from a friend or something and see if that installer will accept your cdkey? You might spend a while patching to the current version from there but you'd have the right cdkey in your war3.mpq so you can use battle.net again. If you can't get legit copies on CD you could consider filesing it if you can find unmodified CD images. Then instead of using a keygen or anything like that you use your legitimate key. The way you describe the downloader thing failing is really weird, but with the installer on the original discs I wouldn't imagine having a similar problem since you do have a valid cdkey.

That's a bummer about the cdkey storage, thank you for shedding light on it. my next solution is to borrow the discs from a friend but he lives a few towns away. Weirdly Blizzard tech support told me they don't show I have the games purchased either, but they're right there in my loving battle.net account management screen.  They sent me a link to the same downloader I've been telling them doesn't work

Because I'm pretty sure you need to install ROC client first. It's also possible you only registred your Frozen Throne key on battle.net and forgot the ROC one. Then the launcher is useless.

My game is very old so I also had a lot of trouble installing the game again. It wouldn't accept my keys. I believe I had to use cracked/generated keys for it to accept the install and then I had to use a key changer to change the cracked keys to my old and original keys manually for it to work.

As someone who skiped WCIII entirely and is mediocre at best at WCII (I can make it through the campaign, barely, and usually with the help of cheat codes after you rescue Zul'Jinn/the alliance archer (can you tell which side of the campaign i played most frequently?)) and RTS games in general, is it worth it to pick up WCIII? I failed miserably at SCII when i tried the trial of that, and while i love mucking about killing poo poo, WCIII came out at the awkard time when i was responsible for my own money but not quite old enough to work and didn't really have $40 to drop on it when i sucked at its prequels. It came down to that or Diablo II, and i picked D2, and did much better with that one. But now that it's only $20, that i'll have next paycheck, and I've kicked around the idea of getting it every time i go and get curbstomped by the comps in WCII (since no one actually plays it anymore) but at the same time, i don't want a game where i'm just going to get my rear end kicked time and time again. Worth it if you suck at RTS's, given all the custom poo poo?

Outside of a couple of bastard missions (just cheat through the undead finale) WC3 is a fairly easy game on normal. I'm not sure that the custom games are that much of a bonus anymore considering the community is almost completely dead and most of the really good custom maps have been turned into their own separate games.

The 5th(?) human mission is probably the hardest in the game, at least on hard difficulty. Every other mission is mostly very forgiving.

All of those elf missions were an awful grind as they all had twice as many bases as was interesting to push through. Actually, pretty much all the undead campaign missions have that problem of taking way more time than they should.

When WoW came out I had a perfectly cromulent experience playing through WC3 again with invincibility cheat. You get the same story and all the fun of base building so that's the path I'd recommend for people who like RTSes but aren't very good at them. (not trying to be snide here, I'm not great at them either.)

If War III has a bunch of decent custom things to play against the computer, then it's worth it.

War3+3x are the best games in the Warcraft franchise, hands down. If you've played WOW at all, pick up and play those games as a lot more of the story will make sense and also you'll realize how lame WOW is because it really lameified a lot of what made Warcraft cool from those earlier games.

The trick is to basically have Arthas do it by himself with a couple ranks in divine shield. Focus the meat wagons only and you'll be able to kill all of them with a bit of hit & run.

I was playing 4v4 RT yesterday because I'm a masochist and some dude was on the other team and could read my messages to my allies. Asking him how he admitted to having chathack and when I told him it didn't matter because one of our teammates was afk, he said he knew because he also had maphack.

It's just not feasible to survive long enough to beat it with Illidan without doing so.

So I take my sweet time clearing out the bases on Malfurion's chunk. It's been awhile since I've done that one but I remember it being extremely frustrating and also may have involved simply memorizing when he would attack which base. I think I just loaded up the humans with knights riflemen and mortars so I could attack move into the base while microing my undead side. On hard the central base was way too loaded with bullshit so it would always take like five assaults to finish it.

I just had Garithos cap out on seige engines and throw them at the undead over and over. With that many they each only have to shoot once to destroy any given building.

So this thread had me come back to WC3 yet again... been playing custom FFAs and random hero solo maps which is basically modded 2-6 player maps that force your hero to be random when it is built. I forgot the bot's name that hosts these but I'll update this post later with the info on it (playffa.net might have the information). They used to do random hero FFAs which was awesome but apparently it doesn't come up in the custom games menu and so no one joins them  I'm on as ActionJackson2 and still love this game, just hard to play much anymore. Former #1 of Westfall test server for 15mins what's up.

Pretty sure this hasn't been posted, but if you're looking for a decent place to play customs you can use https://entgaming.net/forum/games.php to find games. The more popular maps usually start up within 5-10 minutes. Same is true for melee maps: http://playffa.net/site/, but with more drama and hackusations and poo poo. I usually stick to the team maps because FFA is a goddamn mess.
