Ah yes, I forgot about the Aidy/Cecily talk show, that's good too. KimYe I thought I'd only seen once, but have vague memories of a 2nd time now. Also realised I forgot about the Attention Teachers and Students one that seems to go down well here. More than I thought, but still decent quality.

For some reason I there hadn't been one of those this year. It's one of those kind of sketches where they really don't change much but it's still funny every time. Cecily was especially good in the most recent episode. This season seems to be about whose the MVP each week - her or Aidy.

I must be the only person who doesn't enjoy Aidy at all. She over-reads her lines so every single joke has no chance to be good. She's where jokes go to die. Everything she says is in a faux-sarcastic tone.

Vertical Lime posted:They already announced the date for the 40th anniversary special. February 15th next year Previous anniversary specials, namely the 15th and 25th, were held the Sunday prior to the start of their respective season. Doing it in February is definitely different. In the Smigel cartoon that aired near the end of the 25th special, Lorne Michaels hawks a VHS tape for the 45th Anniversary. In a clip from that show, a skeletal Paul Simon plays "Still Crazy After All These Years" (audio taken from his performance on the 15th Anniversary show, no less) and an ancient Lorne is seen waxing about the show while wearing facial tissue containers for shoes. I hope both of these things occur on this upcoming special. Unfortunately that cartoon doesn't appear to be online. But this one is! It's in a similar vein, using the same setting for Lorne and even several gags being repeated, and is amazing. Bonus detail: Lorne was an early adopter of CD technology in 1985 https://screen.yahoo.com/tv-funhouse-anniversary-show-000000924.html The show will almost certainly run over 3 hours, by the way. They basically unofficially officially planned the last one to run over the allotted time, by half an hour. pwn fucked around with this message at 18:59 on Apr 19, 2014 |

SNL crowd needs to watch more wrestling and learn to boo cast members they don't like. I don't hate Armisen but I'm not gonna care that he's turned up to do a sketch when he'd run his course on the show out by a good few years. In trying to move the cast chat from the Finale thread back to it's rightful home... Vanessa Bayer: loved her since her first appearances, definitely become a dependable cast member over the last few years. B+ Aidy Bryant: was on my list of people I wouldn't mind dropping last year... how has 12 months changed things so much? Possibly the strongest cast member all year. A Taran Killam: still great, but I kinda wanted him to fall into a Ferrell style role where he was running ridiculous amounts of sketches per night. Quality of cast probably stopped this. B+ Kate McKinnon: does the Wiig style crazy characters really well but generally with better quality writing behind her and doesn't feel like she's being wasted. B+ Bobby Moynihan: just great, and has been for a good while now. What more needs to be said? B+ Nasim Pedrad: underused, maybe wasn't up for fighting for parts? Shone when she needed to though and did well with recurring characters. C Jay Pharaoh: solid enough, never had QUITE the same love for him that TVIV does but generally enjoy his work. Needs to work on more than just impressions I think. B Cecily Strong: slipped into WU really well and works hard every week. Miss 'The Drunk Girl at the Party' guest slot, hopefully will find an excuse to bring it back one day. B+ Kenan Thompsons: I'll be sad when Kenan eventually leaves, but I think SNL is pretty much his home now. Absolutely dependable. B Beck Bennett: Standout of the newbies, takes on the straight guy role that Jason used to do while being able to slot himself perfectly into insanely daft things like the Baby CEO. B+ Colin Jost: eh he does the presentation fine, but I'd honestly rather Cecily handle WU on her own to be honest. She's good enough and there's no chemistry there. C John Milhiser: genuinely struggling to think of anything he's contributed. Hasn't made his mark in a large cast and can't see him returning. D Kyle Mooney: I liked Kyle on Norm's sports show as well as Hello Ladies. I think SNL needs someone like him and while I can understand some people not liking/getting him, some of his stuff was really good. I especially liked the Class President video he did. C Mike O'Brien: he has such a goofy face I thought he might be able to stand out, but again he's struggled to push his way to the front. D Noel Wells: same for Noel, she's in such a strong female cast... she didn't really stand a chance and I don't remember her in much. D Brooks Whelan: seems a funny dude, and liked him in most of the sketches I saw him in, just not frequently used. C- Sasheer Zamata: came into a large cast midway through the season, seemingly to fill a racial gap. Tough work and handled wonderfully from the very first episode. B+ I feel bad for giving a lot of the newbies a low grade when it wasn't the case they were bad (I don't think there are *any* bad cast members currently), they just weren't able to find their voice and fight for the roles to get them noticed. Sasheer came in unusual circumstances, hard to say whether it worked for or against her but of the girls she was easily the most memorable as Noel simply vanished into the background, and Bennett's ability to play both the straight and bizarre roles will definitely earn him a slot back next year. O'Biren, Whelan, Wells and Milhiser are my picks to be culled over the Summer. I hope at least one of them is able to make a case though, but the cast needs a reduction before s40. Presumably Nasim will be leaving if Mulaney gets an order beyond a few episodes too. All in all, solid season given the loss of all but 1 cast member who had been on the show for some time. Oversized cast probably helped this year, but it's too big to sustain. Can't see them picking up anyone new over the Summer unless they find a must have I guess.

EL BROMANCE posted:Great write-up, had to steal the format! Loved your post so I stole the format to give my own thoughts on the cast this year. Vanessa Bayer: I like her more when she's playing one-off characters than her recurring ones (ex-pornstar, lady with poems) but she's really grown on me since she first started. She seems to really stand out for me in taped bits, like the commercials. B Aidy Bryant: Aidy is amazing. I don't think she overacts at all. She is able to get me to chuckle at a bare minimum every time she appears on screen. She makes me laugh so much without doing many impressions. A- Taran Killam: After reading that he splits time between LA and NY during the week I've become more critical of him. He's still great and makes me laugh, but it seems like he's making fewer and fewer contributions every week. Like El Bromance said, I wish he was in MORE sketches. B+ Kate McKinnon: Definitely better than Kristen Wiig. Really talented and funny. Justin Bieber humor normally isn't funny to me and she was able to change that opinion for me. A- Bobby Moynihan: Bobby is amazing. I wish I saw more of him, it seems like he's only in a few sketches every week. Listening to him on Comedy Bang Bang also spoiled me to want more of his greatness. A Nasim Pedrad: So hard to place her. She's very funny, and her original characters make me smile. She gives me a Cheri Oteri vibe. I'd love to see her next year but I'd be happy to see her move on and explore other comedic opportunities. B- Jay Pharaoh: I like watching Jay Pharaoh do characters that aren't impressions. Normally its of a guy the the dopiest face you'll ever see. I want tos see more of these characters. I'd love to see Hader and Jay do a round of dueling impressions.B+ Cecily Strong: Cecily is really great but maybe she's being pushed too hard? I feel like she's in EVERY sketch AND Weekend Update. I get it, she's very funny, talented and gorgeous. Just don't want to see her burn out or turn into Lorne's favorite pet like Kristen Wiig A Kenan Thompsons: Keenan's contributions to Saturday Night Live will go down in history. He will break records for this show. Keep him in the cast until he dies on stage. A+ Beck Bennett: Bennett and Mooney were my favorite newbies. Baby CEO obviously put him on the map but I continued to love his bizarre shorts that would show up at the end of shows. Good to have a definite "everyman" in the cast. He filled those Taran Killam roles nicely towards the end of the season.A- Colin Jost: I don't get it. Or maybe I do, a young handsome face to pair with Cecily? He just doesn't make me laugh at all, and he seems awkward with the character guests. He could be the funniest writer ever.. just doesn't work for ME D John Milhiser: I feel sorry for the guy because I just don't remember anyting other than the Lady Gaga sketch which I couldn't even finish. D Kyle Mooney: Kyle is great and I'm glad they added him. I also liked seeing him being pushed to appear in more live stuff. It's obvious his strengths are in the EFP bits. The class president and the 420 videos were great. I'm excited to see what he has in year 2, I have a feeling he'll be pushed harder. B+ Mike O'Brien: He is in a second tier behind Bennett and Mooney for new guys, but I think he has a unique voice and I'd like to see it explored for another season. His bit as the ex-Chicago detective doing voice-over work won me over. I would have canned him if not for that bit. C+ Noel Wells: She's just so darn cute! I like finding her in the background when there are large groups in sketches. I would be happy to watch more of her. Maybe she'll get a push when Nasim leaves? C Brooks Whelan: When he first appeared it seemed to me like this dude was a drug addict. Appearing in 1 sketch every week with weird looking eyes. I kept wondering if he wasn't appearing because his stuff got cut, or because he was to hosed up to appear on camera. Seriously, that's how he looked to me. He could be a hilarious dude, and I've heard that he is... I just don't see it consistently. I thought he was funny as the exterminator in the rat sketch with Ed Norton. Also his Kid Rock impression was good. C- Sasheer Zamata: Quickly came in and the writing staff asserted her as BLACK FEMALE CAST MEMBER right away. Every character she played HAD to be black it seemed. The one sketch I can remember where she was just a girl in a group was the "Mr. Big Stuff" sketch with Louis C.K. I don't want to start a race representation discussion here but during the first half of the season I kept reading how crazy it was that there isn't a black female cast member and then BAM, here she is. Black and female and that's how she'll be for you in every sketch. I was inspired to look up other things she's done and she's VERY funny in her own right. I think its obvious she'll be around for a bit, so I hope they let her grow and do more. B The cast really surprised me this year. I thought we'd be in for a definite down season but I felt every episode had something that made me laugh. I think its smart letting Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett do their own thing with digital shorts alongside the more "traditional" ones featuring more of the cast/host.

If it were me, I'd cut Wells and Milhiser and give the rest another year together to see how things go. I think there were enough flashes of great work this year to believe things could be consistently really good with time. I think Wells and Milhiser just aren't different enough from better cast members to ever really do much of anything significant. Plus, there are too many people now as it is. Pedrad is probably gone because of that FOX show, so let those three go and give the rest some room to work. I second the motion to put Jost back in the writer's room and have Bennett on Weekend Update in his place.

I think it's pretty telling that there's not a single cast member people want to cut loose because they suck or have become annoying (see: Wii, Armisen). That said, I'm really surprised at the love Aidy is getting. She still doesn't do much for me, but at this point I'm beginning to suspect the problem is with me and not her. I really hope they don't let Mike O'Brien go. Monster Pals alone earned him the right to stay.

I think the lesser-used featured players would have a better shot if the writers didn't insist on overusing Taran Killam and Cecily Strong. I felt like they were in 90% of the sketches, even in the straight man role. It seems weird that they'd use the more established performers in minor roles, instead of letting them be opportunities for the new guys to break out. Also anyone who hates on Sasheer Zamata must be high. She's awesome.

Aidy isn't always given great material but her timing and delivery is phenomenal IMO. Stuff like Girlfriends Talk Show is pretty average but the way she flips from eager to disappointed and back in those sketches puts them over the top for me. I can see how people would find her annoying though.

Lol, Zamata-san's Michelle Obama impression was an impression of Barack Obama. What talent. Hired in specifically because she's a black woman. She's awesome? She was literally Black Woman #1 in everything and made nothing her own. Kerry Washington, a host, was so much better. Too bad they can't get her. But you know, in retrospect, I guess Zamada, given the way she was hired in (because blogs put pressure on SNL to diversify, lmao) I guess she deserves another year to do something and prove herself. And they overused Cecily because she is like one of four people with any talent on this abomination of a show. It's sad when your strongest male player on SNL is Taran Killam.

I'm pretty sure their hiring process was to audition several black women, pick the prettiest one, and then hire on anyone that was actually funny on as writers. Half the new cast was hired on specifically to try and replace Andy Samberg and I think they all failed in that regard. Pretty much the only people I don't like are the new cast, but fortunately they were pretty much never on anyways.

I don't think Sasheer's problem was being generic black woman, I think its more every sketch she was in the first few weeks super sexualized her. And she is astoundingly beautiful, but so many sketches seemed to have her dancing sexy or speaking with a sultry voice the first few weeks. She was more an object in scenes she was in rather than a participant. But in the last quarter of the season she had a few more active roles and was pretty good, I thought.

Vulture did a top-ten sketches of the season thing, and I was pretty surprised at a few of their inclusions and exclusions. No mention of Hutcherson's "Josie" sketch, Rogen's dog food sketch, or the fact that the first half of the season was mostly bad in spite of the cast and guest talent.

I like Mike O'Brien for that "Bugs: Where the Heck Do You Gotta Be?" bit with Josh Hutcherson. I suppose he could go back to being a writer if they drop him as a player. I'm never really impressed by Noel's impressions, but she's fine other than that. Which is funny, because I think her impressions were supposed to be one of her selling points. Kyle's shorts are hit or miss with me. The class president one was one of my favorites, but that "Flirty" one just didn't do anything for me. Beck's definitely the MVP out of the newcomers. He can play straight man or ridiculous perfectly. Edit: Louis CK's romantic speech skit is definitely one of my favorite bits of the season.
