The Marksman
I tried to get a thread about trad games podcasts going earlier this year but lacked the time to really make it work. Now that I have a bit more time I think it would be good to keep track of great podcasts, articles, blogs, and video series that are out there. If you know of something and want me to add it, I definitely will.

GOON MEDIA

R.P.P.R. Roleplaying Public Radio is the work of Goon clockworkjoe and centers entirely on roleplaying games. In addition to a regular podcast that really goes deep into discussion on topics, it also has a ton of recorded actual plays.
You can find the regular podcasts at http://slangdesign.com/rppr/ and the actual plays at http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/ The podcast releases roughly every two weeks with Actual Plays coming out every five days or so, with usually a handful of different campaigns running concurrently. RPPR has been running since 2007.

NPC CAST A podcast ran by myself along with two other goons that covers all types of traditional games, with a little bit of a focus on RPGs. We release the podcast once a week and vary in format from a discussion topic, to our Bullet Points episodes where we give ourselves a challenge and then design board games around it, or fan favorite Campaign Crucible episodes where we each bring a secret campaign world ingredient to the discussion and hash out a coherent campaign with all of the elements. Episodes are around an hour in length. In 2014 we will be bringing back Total Party Kill, our series of actual plays and starting video content and blogging more consistently. You can find all of our content at http://www.npccast.com

Flip The Table is a great podcast where the casters play an absolutely awful game and then make fun of it for awhile. Very funny and unique and one of the better podcasts on the Dice Tower Network. Find it at http://tableflipsyou.blogspot.com/

Idle Red Hands A podcast from Japan about games and gamers, also goon produced. Idle Red Hands focuses on RPGs and has a very open style of discussion to it often meandering between topics but never getting boring. Episodes usually come in around the one hour mark. You can listen to them at http://www.idleredhands.com/

If other Goons have blogs, podcasts, or video series please let me know and I will put them here.

THE CREAM OF THE CROP

Shut Up and Sit Down Mostly known for their fantastic video reviews of board games, SU&SD's Paul and Quinns are great at doing reviews with humor in them. They have gathered a great fan base and have even become a featured series on PATV. I can't recommend them highly enough. You can find their website at http://www.shutupandsitdown.com/ and all their blogs and videos are available from there.

Watch It Played A series of videos that goes beyond a simple review, Rodney Smith and his family use this channel to teach boardgames and then allow the observers to actually participate in the outcome of the game. He also encourages open discussion of board games with his viewers in his Table Talk segments. He also happens to be one of the nicest guys in the scene. You can find his Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/WatchItPlayed

The Angry DM is to grognards what Stephen Colbert is to Republicans and he carefully lampoons the ridiculousness of the hobby all the while providing a host of great information for game masters. Check out his blog at http://angrydm.com/ and be sure to follow him on Twitter at http://twitter.com/theangrydm

The Secret Cabal Gaming Podcast is probably my favorite podcast on The Dice Tower network. They make a large group of hosts work, have a great sense of humor and manage to talk about games in a really funny way. Their focus is on board games but they do an RPG segment most weeks as well. You can find them at http://www.thesecretcabal.com

2 GMs 1 Mic hosted by Joe and Nicky who solely talk about RPGs and do a great job covering a lot of the more obscure stuff that the industry has to offer. Podcasts come out every 2 weeks but they are currently on a break between seasons. Listen to them at http://www.2gms1mic.com

Beasts of War is a video series that centers around minis games. They cover all of the big games like Warhammer and Warmachine but also give time to newer games like Dropzone Commander and MERCs. You can find their Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/TheBeastsOfWar

Dungeon Bastard is a series where gaming stereotype Bill Cavalier dispenses with all sorts of sarcastic gaming advice. The videos are well made and consistently funny and I recommend watching them and reading his blog. You can find both at http://www.dungeonbastard.com

If there is something else you want added to this section or you think belongs here, let me know. Unless it is Jen Page and Monte Cook's stupid ghost hunting video series. I will never put that here. Ever.

THE OTHERS

There are too many gaming Podcasts to talk about each in depth or even list them all. Most board game podcasts are part of The Dice Tower Network these days which you can find at http://www.dicetowernetwork.com. A majority of RPG podcasts work through the aggregator http://www.rpgpodcasts.com

I am not as deep into the world of blogs and video series, but as I find good ones I will put links to them here as well.

It would probably be a good idea I include Wil Wheatons TableTop in there, as I've seen more games tagged with "As featured on TableTop" recently. It's gaining more traction in the main stream than most others.

I had just made a post in the chat thread that someone should make a media thread too. Way to read my mind, Sarx!

Another good actual play podcast is the Drunk and Ugly: http://drunkandugly.com/ - long running campaigns of Monsters and Other Childish Things, Little Fears, Eclipse Phase, Call of Cthulhu, and a few other systems.

Ken and Robin talk about stuff: http://www.kenandrobintalkaboutstuff.com/

If you dig Call of Cthulhu, The Unspeakable Oath has a podcast that updates every once in a great while. Good to archive binge though! http://theunspeakableoath.com/home/category/unspeakable/

I've thought about expanding into doing APs of board games - with videos and the like, but it seems like a huge pain in the rear end for limited return (in terms of audiences actually wanting to listen or watch it) - obviously edited reviews of board games are one thing, but what about entire games? Is that something anyone would actually want?

Sarx, your Campaign Crucible concept is similar to an indie game called Microscope, which you all should check out. Have you read or reviewed that yet? You start out with a bunch of campaign "spices" and end up with a season of your new favorite TV show basically.

I actually own Microscope. It is the same idea for sure, though our episodes are a bit more free form. As for reviews, we tend not to do reviews. Our general rule has been "No rules, just endorsements", because there are so many great games out that I don't really want to waste time disparaging bad ones.

Speaking of which, we put a new episode up today at http://www.npccast.com and it is our first episode of 2014. Its topic is our new years resolutions for gaming and the podcast. Plus I think its one of our funnier episodes.

So what's the lowdown on recording podcasts using Hangouts? It's my understanding that they can be put on Youtube very easily, but you have less control over it when it goes up. Are there any other options? What are your experiences using Hangouts?

Honestly Rich is the one that does all the technical stuff, I just turn on my webcam and join (or, as with this one, fail to join, because for some reason google hangouts was acting weird.) You could shoot him a message on g+ and see what he thinks.

I do like the ease of use and I'm going to try to do just an interview/chat/debate with Judd Karlman about themes in games pretty soon and maybe I'll know more then.

Goon Media

Looking for a Magic Space Nazi Inquisitor Johnson

Excellent and hilarious audio and video actual plays of several systems brought to you by Ladderface, Golden315, Semisponge, RChimpCola, MrSunabouzu, and Sinatrapod. Generally Sinatrapod is the (forever) GM. Occasionally they let him out of his cage.

Their body of work includes: Spirit of the Century, Shadowrun, Eclipse Phase, Dark Heresy, Numenera and their own game settings 'The Silent' and 'Shadow of the Unseen'. For first time listeners I recommend Eclipse Phase and the peerless Shadow of the Unseen episodes (start with Japan first). Shadow of the Unseen is a supernatural investigator game that starts off as something like a World of Darkness game but quickly vectors into insanity and beyond. It is literally hard to describe.

kalonZombie's Pathfinder and Star Wars Campaigns

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. kalonZombie ran a Pathfinder game. And the Archive ate the thread. The End.

During the battle, kalonZombie managed to steal the audio of all the episodes and post them on a tindeck account, narrowly avoiding the Archive’s power to destroy access to hours of creative work.

http://tindeck.com/users/kalonZombieSA

Pursued by sinister analogies, the Party of Pathfinder players raced across the face of Cheliax to investigate why a volcano had erupted in the demon haunted land, uncover the inimical forces at work and restore freedom to the galaxy…in twenty episodes.

Also they played Star Wars Saga Edition and Everyone is John.

Gamerstable – Actual Plays and Discussion of Gaming Topics

These Actual Plays are something special.

They are less gaming podcasts and more heavily edited audiobooks with music, sound effects, and even voice actors to narrate some of the NPC monologues.

Not convinced? Here is an example:

”Tower of the Ape, Episode 6 –Horror and Madness” posted:

Narrator:

The sun reflected off the powdery white sand through the crystal clear water causing the entire pool to shimmer with an eerie cerulean luminance as a lone craft deliberately oared its way deeper into the large karstic sea cave.

It was a colossal cavern whose ceiling towered hundreds of feet above their heads gradually tapering down until it abruptly ended in the steep face of a basalt bluff.

Treacherously steep natural stone steps lined the northern wall of the cave originating from the cliff outside and ending with a shelf fifty feet above the water.

This natural walkway was barely wide enough for a man to tread and so precarious in places he would have to seek hand and foot holds to get to sections of safer width.

Massive fluted colonnades rose from the depths holding the graven entablatures with delicately intricate designs depicting strange bestial forms and shapes that were both geometric yet asymmetric.

Both breathtakingly beautiful in its grandeur and nauseatingly disturbing in its unnaturalness, this cavern to forgotten gods loomed menacingly ahead of them.

The passage of time caused the majority of the structure to submerge, sinking as if the sea and earth were consuming the tainted edifice in some terrestrial phagocytic response.

Karstic? Entablatures? Phagocytic?

When was the last time you saw vocabulary like this in print let alone heard it in an actual play podcast?
And that’s not even the action sequences.

Start here for ‘The Tower of the Ape, a Savage World's Conan Adventure’ part 1: http://gamerstable.com/toa1/
If you like that each of the characters has a half an hour prologue as well.

Other Audiobook-like Actual Plays

Power of the Darkside, Star Wars adventure. Expect Sith. Treachery. Smugglers. Sand people.
Part 1: http://gamerstable.com/swap-pod-prologue/

Victoriana. Best described as ‘Steampunk Shadowrun.’

They have extensive Call of Cthulhu and Eclipse Phase campaigns along with Mage: The Awakening, Fiasco, Wushu, and A Dirty World games.

The New York accents and their primary Gamemaster’s radio-announcer voice add gravitas to the dick jokes. Their Call of Cthulhu episodes sound very Scorsese.

You know you didn't have to go post that, right?
But it's fine, I guess...

You just keep being you!

Close the Airlock!

A Traveller Actual Play Podcast, that's completed after 107 episodes, each around an hour long. Notable mostly because I haven't really seen any Traveller Actual Plays about.

The same group is aiming to start a D&D Next/Fifth Edition campaign, called Downfall when the rulebooks are released towards the end of summer. It'll be a political intrigue based game and the GM has put together a 42-page Player's Guide to his homebrew setting on the website. There's a "GM's Guide", but you donate a minimum of :10bux: to get that - I haven't checked it out. It starts at the end of August!

Your Turn Go! is a new board game/general nerdery podcast/vidcast that features one or two goons. It's weekly with video episodes being slightly less frequent than audio. Audio episodes cover a wide variety of topics and the videos go more for goofiness rather than hard commentary or review. The latest features a large man in a Batman mask and tiny cape, for example.

Rolled a 1 on the random encounter table, didn't you?
I saw this on Boingboing and it gave me an idea: http://piratebox.de/

quote:

What is the PirateBox?
PirateBox creates offline wireless networks designed for anonymous file sharing, chatting, message boarding, and media streaming. You can think of it as your very own portable offline Internet in a box!

How does it work?
When users join the PirateBox wireless network and open a web browser, they are automatically redirected to the PirateBox welcome page. Users can anonymously chat, post images or comments on the bulletin board, watch or listen to streaming media, or upload and download files inside their web browser.

Where can I buy a PirateBox?
There are some things that money can't buy, and PirateBox is one of them! However, you can build one yourself by following our easy DIY instructions.

I made one, loaded it with RPPR episodes and took it to Fear the Con. On a technical level, it worked as advertised but I did run into a big hurdle. Namely, explaining the concept to people and getting them to actually try it. It was also kind of superfluous because the venue had free wi-fi for all, so people who were interested in RPPR could just use the Internet. Several people did use it to download episodes to listen to on the way home so I'll count that as a success.

Lessons Learned:

1. You need to inform con-goers of the pirate box's existence and why they should use it. To that end, it works best when you are running an event or panel. If you have a booth, set up a sign.

2. It works best in areas without free wifi.

3. Power is an issue - usb batteries can extend life on a router for long periods of times.

Ideas for next time I use it:

1. Put exclusive/limited content on the pirate box to encourage its use

2. Put password protected zip files for commercial digital content (like rpg PDFs) - when someone buys the PDF, offer them the password so they can download and use it immediately - also have them post on the message board with their email address so you can send them a permanent link later on.

3. Put free PDFs/digital content related to any event you are running, like character sheets, quick start rules,or fiction ebooks.

4. Encourage fans to take photos and post them to the message board.

Something for the fellow RPG podcasters to consider
