Not too stupid
Hazeron is back baby!

What, I thought this was dead?

It was. It was shut down August of 2014, Haxus went to work on other games and released another Gravity Well game this time using a lot of code from SoH.

According to Haxus the game could be available as soon as tomorrow evening, so 2/16. No firm time yet.

This time around it will be in a limited universe 50 Sectors cubed, to cut down on resources used and to force players closer together.

It is now subscription based at $5 for two weeks, and $10 a month from there.

What is this game

http://www.hazeron.com/

SoH is a project created by one person, Haxus. It's a space MMO complete with procedural solar systems, which spawn with different types of suns, planets, creatures, resources, and resource qualities. There is freeform Space Ship and Building design as well, where you can make almost anything you want as long as you can afford the resources to build it. Size limitation is huge, but you won't be able to make lifesize Star Destroyers...at least not without some tricks.

You build up a civilization starting from just you being dropped on a planet with nothing but a knife. You can control an empire of any size you want, assuming you can handle the upkeep, and any number of players you can get to join you. Creating ships that can do everything from simple transportation, to war ships with dozens of cannon bays and the troops to assault a city. The largest empires control dozens of systems and hundred of solar systems.

An example of a giant harvesting station, a teensie early game enterprise, and a very basic station orbiting the first ringworld I ever found.

There is no goal in the game, it is purely sandbox. Most people just beat each other up with space behemoths.

Why should I play this?

'Cause the scale is massive, each on of those stars is a solar system, and each one of those larger dots is a colonized system.

The game is updated regularly, and has had a lot of changes over the past 2 months or so. Haxus plans to continue this post reset and hopefully we got some new shiny sometime soon, as he plans to update how ships look.

You start on a habitable planet with all of the base resources you need to become space faring, but beyond that the other planets, stars, and solar systems will be random. Planets are a lot smaller than in real life, but are still huge. The average size for a habitable planet is about 7-8km diameter, and moons can be as small as 1800m accross. Gas giants are just that, giant, and stars are huge as well.

Space travel is made possible by having planets much closer together than in reality, and travelling to other star systems is best done through wormholes or warp, as deadheading can take hours to days to the nearest system depending on your luck.

Races in the game are also player created, and animals are random, so watch out for 10ft tall dick monster coming out of the forest that shoot eggs that grow inside you and pop out as a feral dick monster. Which then proceeds to spawncamp you.

Here's a few choice races

You can also mount your varied farm...animals?

Previously Played

There have been some major changes over the last year or two, terrain is now smoother and the building system is no longer tile based. Warp engines are in, but those have been for a long while now. Ring-worlds are rare, but still difficult for AI to navigate. Sun diving is not as common as it used to be, I've left for weeks and my ships have been fine. Government Money is now a little difficult to come by, at least before you get subsidized traders set up. You can also harvest most(all?) resources from orbit now, using harvester bays, which is a great way to make money without having to set up colonies. Lag is rare now, and should be less noticeable with the reset. There is an offline ship and building designer accessible through the launcher, use them as they avoid lagging up the game servers and run better anyway.

Why does it look like crap?

This game could be called an Alpha, but that would be too generous. Everything you see is what would be termed "Programmer Art" in any other game and ditched at the earliest moment possible, but not here. The graphics aren't too bad once you get into the game, and despite all this: Planet diving during sunrise/sunset with the gas giant your home planet orbits in the background can still look stupid pretty.

Joining the goon empire.

PGS thread for IRC and password: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3599051

Were are on the CTS mumble for now.

To join as your own race:
1) Hit join empire, then create your race before you finalize joining.

To name your race you should murder Targoss, and when you get his corpse drag it onto the ABC button in your inventory.

To chat once in the Empire:
1) F3 to open the chat menu
2) In the channels along the left there should be an 'Empire' tab
3) If there is none go to open standard channel in the top left and open Empire

We're not going strictly goons only, so if you have a friend who wants to join, feel free to invite them. Just don't give out the password freely to people you don't know.

This wonderful race is what the empire will be going with, it was creating by SPERMCUBE.ORG, but creating your own and joining our empire means your planets will host your own terrible race.

Just starting out

The easiest way is to join an existing Empire. After a couple of days in we will be able to throw cash at new players to help them get started.

At the start of the game you will be dropped onto a planet with nothing but a knife and a weird dude talking to you by the name of Targoss. Murder him immediately, right click, and pick up his body with a left click. Then drag it onto the ABC button in the inventory and name your wonderful race. Using the labor menu (f10), craft leather using his carcass, and then textile. Get wood by clicking on a tree with the freehand, then make a needle. Make a flag using the needle and textile. Congrats, you founded your first city based on cold blooded murder! If Targoss murders the poo poo out of you: Try not being so terrible.

Follow the guides that can be found here:

http://www.hazeron.com/manual.html
http://www.hazeron.com/software/HazeronTutorialByIkkirIsth.pdf

And the Wiki can be pretty useful, but some parts are still missing and many are out of date:

http://www.hazeronwiki.com/

I believe the Ikkir Isth tutorial is way out of date by now, but getting a city started is basically the same.

If you have any questions just ask on galactic chat, or better yet just join us and you'll start with what you need to go off and found your own cities.

Cities and Empires

Creating your first city will likely be the largest challenge you face in the game, since the feedback from the city is rather poorly done. After founding your city will send you an in game mail every 13 minutes telling you the status of the city. This will be your most useful tool for understanding how resources flow, and how your population feels.

Start building your city by going into the overhead view, backspace. Once here use the [] keys to change height, and the \ and Shift + \ to rotate through the different filters until you see resources, things that look kinda like a stone block, plants and crap, etc. You'll get used to what those all mean over time, but for now look for stone and drop a mine on it. To do this place a road heading next to the stone icon(f11 menu), then place the mine on the stone resource using your mousewheel to make it 4 levels high. Head over to it, and start working the construction site under the labor menu(f10). Once it's completed, run several jobs of stone and then place a farm the same way you placed the mine, but this time location does not matter other than next to a road. Makes sure the farm is using the environment and is making vegetables or something edible.

You need an airport or a dock to get citizens to immigrate to your city , so that should be your first goal to work towards. Hydro power is the best power if you have water anywhere nearby, and once you have power your citizens will start to work on the city at night. Performing jobs and building the buildings you lay out. Farms still require sunlight, so make sure you make some food during the day so they don't starve during the night.

From here you build your city up by getting all the resources you need to build and then run the complex industries. Things like ore, metal, tools, oil, electronics, etc. Don't worry too much about balance, it is better to build too much of intermediate goods that get used in different runs and that are also considered final goods for ship building, such as electronic parts and metal.

The best way to figure out what you need is to build a spacecraft factory and design studio, make a design for a cheap workable TL1 ship using the manual, and then switch it over to using rocket engines by hitting the modules button in the bottom left of the ship builder, and setting grav drives to rocket motors. Once that ship is complete than use that for your moon mission, rather than faffing about with a space rocket.

By now your city should be getting some tax revenue if you built a Machine Shop and have it making metal bullion. The amount that goes into your government account is able to be used for research, or you can embezzle it for you own use. Too much tax will piss off a population, and confiscation can start a revolt where a city leaves the empire, and must be conquered. This can happen whenever morale is too low.

Tech Levels and you

Once you have some decent government spacebux, you now need to focus on researching higher tech levels for goods that impact space ships and colonization. Space ship size, effeciency, and certain abilities are locked by the TL of the ship, at TL1 your ship is small and is really only good for setting up colonies in your home system. At TL2 you get sensors and turreted weapons, TL4 gets you bay weapons, harvesters, and shields, and so on until you get Warp drives and different hull materials. To build a ship of a given TL, ALL inputs and buildings involved need to be of the tech level desired, even one resource that is a single TL too low will mean the ship can not be constructed.

Tech Level of a buildings is gained by using a tech disc of a higher TL than the building is, so to get a TL4 refinery, you must have a TL4 tech disc for the building to consume.

Universities will produce tech discs of the highest level building of that industry in the city, assuming the university is of at least that TL. Tech levels are gained by producing tech discs until a breakthrough occurs, a 1/100 chance if you are running just one job of that tech. When a breakthrough occurs a tech disc of the next higher TL is produced, which can then be used by a building. You will want to focus on certain techs that will give you the most bang for your buck, mostly just ones that go directly into ship levels or of decent utility in other ways.

My current list of important techs is:

*not necessary for ship tech
**Not really all that necessary at all
Names might not be correct, but you should be able to figure out the right ones.

Combat

Having half a dozen players on the bridge of a super ship fighting off swarms of AI pirates is a sight to behold. Combat in space is done from ships and stations either controlled by players or AI, players of course do much, much better than AI. You need at least a pilot(usually the captain), a weapons officer, and a shield officer. Swarming an opponent with AI ships is also a valid tactic, as 20 TL32 ships will eventually grind down a player controlled one.

Boarding can be hilarious bad, especially when you accidentally blow up one of your buddies who got a little too close to the plastic explosives on the door :v:. Then once on board an AI officer just comes down and punches your dick in, twice in a row.

Try to focus your ship designs around easy navigation to the stations, and once you get to TL7 switch over to transporters and seal the ship, making boarding impossible with your shields intact. With people running around repairing the ship manually you can survive a long time in an extended firefight, or explode instantly if you have no armor. So keep a path to all the important modules on the ship, and keep a supply of repair materials.

Taking cities is more annoying than difficult, and if you have enough troops you can take the city without you yourself ever firing a shot. The way to capture is to take all of the enemy bases by clearing the enemy troops out or having more troops on the base, which will cause the flag to switch to yours. Once you have a base captured you need to leave enough troops for that flag to stay up, one for an empty base, and then capture the cities flag the same way. Remember to keep your ship out of weapons range of the enemy weapons bases.

Oh, and get an officer as soon as you can, as they make ordering your ships around a million times easier.

Useful tools, tips, and tricks

Tools

Hazeron colony calculator:

http://www.raumkraut.net/hazeron/colonycalc.html

Basically a necessity when it comes time to plop down dozens of colonies. Can work in all the materials for construction, and even for hostile environments. Set your wastage higher to make sure you have enough materials, as 1.3 never seems to be right for everything. I generally go with 1.5 and it works out fine.

Hazeron Survey Scouter:

http://hazeron.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2808

Another essential tool for a growing empire. It lets you paste or import scans and sort through them without burning out your eyes staring at the in game mail. You can also import other player's databases into your own and purge duplicates. Can't really praise this thing enough.

Tips and Tricks

- Ships over about 20 tiles long/wide and 5 decks high will need to spawn at a station. It will say in the design studio if the design is too large for a road slab.
- Never hold shift and hit ~ ever. This will broadcast what you are looking at over the channel you are on, even galaxy chat. This message includes your location and the TL if the subject has it. Suuuper bad.
- You can place multiple resource buildings on one resource node currently, just have to get the corner of the mine/well/whatever in and then never touch the resource selection on the building. You can even work the job yourself to get the resources. 4 per resource node is the max, but a bit tricky to get right, 3 is usually easy to get.
- Use road slabs to level terrain, then use roads to keep the terrain the way it is if you don't want road slabs there. Useful for an area you want flat, but don't want ships to land at.

Not difficult is an understatement. We fought the French Empire who were the second most powerful empire in the game. Our first attack against them was an utter disgrace and we gloriously charged to our deaths. Later we figured out that we never actually attacked the french at all but NPC pirates instead because I can't read.

The second attack we actually managed to shoot at the right people at least but it was still a disgrace. I think most of us blew up and fell into space. The point is we were totally incompetent, unorganized, and inexperienced but we still won. Hell, I forgot to bring food and had to eat the enemy soldiers.

Of course they took it all back a day later. But what's important is the first time goons played this game they were wiped out by the french. The second time we fought an inconclusive war with them. Extrapolating from that must mean the third time we will win.

We have delivered the first conquest in this cycle, crushing two empires under the weight of our fat lardy asses. Already we have found a ring world, which will boost our crazy population even higher.

We are churning out FTL-capable ships and, slowly, researching higher tech levels to make things easier. Colonizing places is now easy and you no longer have to be stuck hanging out at the few home worlds twiddling your thumbs. Go forth and multiply!

I never did go far with experimenting with things in the old universe, but were TL>7 ships able to pick up officers from the Neutral Zone colonies?

If this was indeed possible, we could have people set up empires in the Veil of Targoss to look for ring worlds to mass-produce officers for the purpose of having some sort of gigantic AI fleet flying around - possibly to patrol our worlds for us or just to have some extra firepower in a fight.

Haha! That needs to go in the first post, and excellent example of what is so bad (graphically!) and yet so awesome. Flying a player designed & built ship to someone elses planet and invading it. Ok, there was a distinct lack of actual violence and explosions, but it pretty well shows that underneath the programmer art and terrible UI is a strangely awesome space MMO of the kind that the big name games dream of being.

Edit: Anyone online at the moment? I'm gibboning around Goontopia, crashed a ship already (sorry!). I have a flag, but that is about all I have. So - I presume I need to get some cash and start my own city, but as I have no cash I can't withdraw the materials for a moonbase (or even an environment suit) so should I just make a start on a distant part of this planet?

Secondly (and more importantly), how do you get your crew to actually do anything?
While sitting in the captains chair, with the ship crewed, I tried to set an order to orbit Goontopia IIa. But nothing happened...

Currently money is very tight, but by the end of today we should be making a bit. I wish there was a way to have a new player start with cash, but you either need to get it through rewards, or have someone lobb some at you once it becomes not scarce.

Order your crew around using the Shift + F2 menu. Click the green button to make it go. You need to have crew loaded on your ship for this to work.

This place was odd. They had a whole bunch of military bases up but no soldiers in them anywhere. We figured they just hadn't recruited yet. Then after our glorious victory everybody else left but I decided to stick around and try to use the transporter console again to make sure there were no unwanted lifeforms sneaking around. This time it actually turned on and there was something like 15 Amitabha soldiers lurking in the jungle doing nothing. I'm not sure what was going on with that, maybe the guy was going to use them to take back the city after we left. If so that was a pretty good plan. But good plans are no match for us. They were executed as spies.

The point is I was right. The transporter console is awesome.

Oh, and on the Capital: Weapons ships are in front and to the left as you come to the giant pad from the flag, the right is a ship with a prospector bay.

I've been designing a Weapons System Base since before the end of the universe that would truly annoy the hell out of any invaders trying to take the base (if it doesn't crash them out first due to how complex it is), but given the AI, how do defending troops react when enemies enter the base compound?

What I'm trying to make is something similar to those 'troops under the flag' bases, but with doors - would they all just rush out regardless of stations and get themselves killed? I want to force players and their AI troops (preferably players) to navigate through a really annoying maze just to get to either the stationed troops or the command center.

I suppose I should also ask as to whether the AI lock doors behind them, as the doors would serve no purpose at all if they're all always open and I don't want to be the one running through my own maze with every base built just to lock them all.

Another victorious day for goon hegemony in Hazeron. We've completely eradicated an empire and repelled another invasion, and we're poised to leapfrog a few more levels in tech. As I write this, my new warship/miner design is about to complete construction, complete with its eight motorcycle bays as is goon law.

More people should play this terrible game.

I've made a terrible starship design (T2), would it be possible to get permissions in Goontopia to put it in the queue to be made? It's only an explorer as I don't quite know what type of weapons are available/useful...

Edit: Also, what do you do when your starship fails to get through a wormhole by AI? I think the engineer is turning it on too early & it times out just before we reach the wormhole :(

Rehab: For the Korean Korvette when the bikes are spawned it makes it so you can't get on/off easily. We also have TL2 weapons now.

Bah, I was a bit afraid of that. Lesson learned I guess.

Hit f6 and check if the ship is damaged.

We only have four(5?) positions that can run ships through Goontopia, I'd rather get some permament people in that keep switching it out.

To get a ship built sell it to the designer and let us know.

Edit: Uuuuh a thing happened!

Looks like Loyal Citizens is the measurement now, which is great, as it nixed all those double galaxy/flag dropping in sectors BS.

Updizzle: Going through and targetting the lower tech, should be at TL3-4 "soon"

It looks like he's changed the empire standings so that there's a completely separate list for the neutral zone and elsewhere.

Also you can't get a list of starships/avatars/cities/etc anymore, it's just a number without a link.

e: if you want ships built goontopia is kind of too laggy for that right now, unless it cleared up.
Plus there are only so many permissions to go around. See if you can fix up some other systems and build your ships there. I know some systems near our home system are almost ready.

Yeah, that's an amazing change. For both.

Is there any way to make this not run like a steaming pile? My PC runs planetside 2 about 10X better than the near slideshow I get here.

If you're in goontopia it'll probably lag always. It's better elsewhere, but the game is terribly optimized in general.

Edit: I really enjoy that we basically just walked backwards into first place, while everyone else was basically exploiting for it before.

We are now at was with The Blood Ravens, and all that entails. Make sure you cities are secure, use the weapons base provided by Toes.

If that was the empire I took the city from, they didn't even have any bases on their homeworld. They could've quit or rerolled their empire.

The citizens have loyalty to "The Blood Raven". It was definitely not their home planet, more than likely someone just hosed off and started building a planet from the ground up, or joined them after founding it.
