Wait a minute- in this picture, is Obama Castro's dick?

It's generally odd to me how these cartoonists treat normalizing relations as a gift to Cuba- I think one of these cartoons said "what do we get out of it?" Completely missing that trade is mutually beneficial, so both sides should profit from it.

Everyone knows embargos take down regimes exactly 55 years after they are enacted. We were only a year away from total victory and Obama ruined it, so now the Soviets can place intermediate range missles on the island with impunity. MAD doctrine will be unbalanced and the USA will lose the Cold War.

Embargos against communist countries can only be ended and normal relations established by Republican presidents. That's wise statecraft, but if a democrat does it then the commies win and we have to go Red.

There's been no reason to do it for the last twenty-five years, minimum. It's being done now because Putin seems dedicated to reviving the Cold War and Obama ending the embargo makes it less likely that Cuba will have a resurgence of Communism. These cartoons are all literally "Obama is a bad president for attempting to deprive America's enemies of a valuable ally whose support 50 years ago nearly led to nuclear holocaust." I don't know how loving stupid you have to be to think averting nuclear war is a bad thing, but they've all achieved it.

BBJoey

Conservatives are literally incapable of thinking far enough ahead to consider how a continued antagonistic attitude towards Cuba could lead to them aligning once again with America's enemies. In fact they're incapable of looking far enough ahead to foresee the benefits the Cuban market will have for their pals big business. All they are capable of recognising is that Obama Did Thing and Reagan Didn't Do That Specific Thing so obviously Thing is bad.

If you're gonna have roads, you're gonna have roadkill.
The deal is no matter how many missionaries we've generated we haven't flipped Cuba to our religion, meaning we aren't getting that 30% bonus, and we are missing out on another since we have conflicting ideologies. Opening the borders will give us a boost and then we can send in our great musicians to do tours and generate a massive amount of culture. Plus the trade route will net us a fair chunk of GPT which we can use to further stock up on military units in case Ghandi decides to go crazy with the nukes.

Civ 5 jokes aside culture is our greatest export and it will probably be only a couple of turns before Raul calls up Washington to complain about all the Cubans wearing our blue jeans and listening to our pop music.

I think the implication is that ending the embargo should have been conditional on ending human rights abuses, if not outright democratization. Which seems fairly reasonable, actually.
