The weather in a lot of the country is absolute poo poo and you've got to do something with your rugrats on weekends. When the choice is putting them out in subzero weather or taking them to a movie theater for two hours of peace... Makes me wonder if Frozen would be doing nearly as well without the polar vortex.

PSA: The LEGO Movie was made on an astounding $60 mil. To put that in perspective: *The average Disney and Dreamworks 3D animated is about $150 mil *Pixar is about $200 now *Blue Sky tends to stay under $100 mil *Illumination is a close companion at about $70 mil. [source: Wikipedia, gently caress you SA I don't need to be professional] Surprising to see out of a 3D animated film that looks so impressve. Especially in 2014 where a studio pumping out a $60 mil film a decade ago would be close to $75 mil today. Honestly a budget that low is generally reserved for 2D animated and some stop-motion films. For compairison, both Laika films are budgeted around $60 mil, and early Henry Selick films were about $20-$50 mil in today's money.

Seriously, they could have at least sent a couple of buckets of blocks and have everyone check out the possibility's to include the sets in the movie and just play with them and make Awesome stuff and just goof around and and that's why I don't work at movies

The only thing in the LEGO movie animated entirely with stop motion and actual LEGOs is the end credits sequence. Even that surprises me since stop motion is a production nightmare.

Even a lot of modern stop motion requires a lot of digital help. I would imagine just shooting digitally and using 3-D printing (as was done on ParaNorman) saves months of work.

The Wind Rises is now in "wide" release, although you still might have to drive a bit to see it. Just saw it tonight, and it's really, really good. Miyazaki is definitely near the top of his game, and it's a great movie to end an amazing career on. Just kidding he'll be back directing another movie within two years.

The original Japanese voice actor for Herzog's character was the American head of international distribution. Anno wasn't the only Ghibli associate voice acting in the movie.

I saw the dub of The Wind Rises last night, as well. It's an absolutely great movie, but it's really slow paced. A few people I saw it with weren't really expecting that, and were a bit bored at points, and I expect the movie won't do all that well because of that. However it was a perfect movie for Miyazaki to retire with, and it felt like there were a few callbacks to previous Studio Ghibli films (nothing explicit, and it's probably more just imagery being repeated from stuff like Poco Rosso). I'd like to see the subtitled version at some point, though I'll probably have to wait for the Blu-ray release.

Some budgets include marketing and advertising in their production budgets [in many cases can be 2x the actual production cost of the film itself], others package internal software development costs plus costs related to other company divisions to that budget, while a few actually report the actual cost. All in the end they all break even so they don't have to pay taxes I'd get more specific but I'm still under NDA to half the companies you listed.

Have we talked about the nominated short films yet? Overall Possessions was my favorite- the atmosphere of it suggested something potentially horrific, but the story went in a nice and interesting direction. Room on the Broom was super-super-cute, and I'm thinking either it or Mr. Hublot might win just because they're both very sweet and nice. Get A Horse! is probably my second-favorite. Feral was well-done if not a favorite. They also included the not-in-competition stuff at the screening I went to. A La Francais was the most hilarious goddamn thing. It shouldn't be, half of the humor is just that these are goofy looking birds acting like French aristocrats, but it is.

I was torn between Frozen and The Wind Rises, so I can't really complain. Plus, Walt Disney Animation Studios FINALLY won an Oscar for Best Animated Film.
