My only concern here would be that it's a followup film to a pre-existing anime series. But this issue hasn't been a huge problem yet so it seems premature for rules about it.

Yeah, if I have to make an anime rule I will, but at the moment, I'd rather not make more rules. If it's a problem, I'll do it.

Don't forget that Despicable Me 2 literally just ignores that the girls HAD a grandmother figure in the first movie. (Gru's mom.) They just drop her entirely without explanation so that they can put this "girls need a maternal figure" bullshit in there.

I just watched Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs last night again, and there's a bit of a deal about Flynt not having a mother anymore. Also how his father stumbles at trying to fulfill the role of both parents that Flynt kindof needs, or at least wants.

Yeah, both Cloudy movies are really good about this.

Also, if the advertising for The Boxtrolls is anything to go by, "atypical families" is going to be its central theme.

The Academy is behind the times. Monsters University was a great film, among Pixar's best, and I'm pretty sure it's being punished for the failures of Cars 2 and Brave. (I also consider this to be the reason for the critical attacks on it.) I mean, how many "kid's movies" spread the message, in the end, that maybe you can't accomplish your dream?

Frozen still deserves the win, though.

Except that Sully and Mike do accomplish their dreams, and we went into the movie knowing that they do? (Well, Sully does, anyway. Mike kinda does.) They just fail in their initial plan, and are then shown in the credits bootstrapping in and making their way up from the mail room after flunking out of college, which I thought was insanely stupid.

The whole theme of the movie is the mundane and ordinary suppressing the fantastic and incredible. The heroes weren't going into hiding as they were signing paperwork stating that they were retiring from hero work and agreeing to not use their abilities to save people anymore. Bob isn't allowed to do hero work, he's on probation, as is every other hero on the government's list. It's the equivalent of the tallest man in the world being ordered by the court to stop being so tall because it's been decided his tallness is unfair to all the people who are shorter than him, he should be short too.

Or something. I haven't seen the movie in the a while. The lawsuits weren't hugely elaborated upon, and I imagine it's more the public pressure to shut down the hero program that actually did the job, the lawsuit was just the light that started that public disapproval going, with tabloids and gossip rags carrying the torch. The superhero's in The Incredibles are all under a government program, if I remember right, and you don't need to look very hard in superhero fiction to find stories of governments and public opinions on superheros swinging between positive and negative.

Also, half the movie takes place on No-man-is-an Island, if I recall.

Obviously this film didn't have the budget, but I feel not having Bradley Cooper voice Sly is a missed opportunity.

I want Bradley Cooper to voice all raccoons, is what I'm saying here.

The kids in the theater I went to mostly just wanted to talk about the stuff they were seeing. Any other movie and it probably would have driven me nuts, but I think it actually improved my experience here.

When Batman says "Bruce Wayne? Who's that? Sounds like a cool guy," one of the kids in my theater yelled "That's you, Batman, you idiot!" and I pretty much couldn't stop laughing for the rest of the scene.

The Aristocats (1970)
Robin Hood (1973)
The Rescuers (1977)
The Fox and the Hound (1981)
The Black Cauldron (1985)

How did those take so long and also were made so cheaply/poorly/full of recycling?

I didn't care much for Chester V's design when I first saw the movie, but when I did a guest spot on this podcast (which you all should listen to if you read this thread), we realized something amazing about his design in comparison to Flint's.

When Flint moves, all of his limbs just flail about wildly and they are all over the place, completely random. Chester V's limbs are also constantly in motion, but they're very smooth and controlled. It's part of the similarities of those two characters.

Why are they having it come out at different times in different places?

This is actually very common for both live-action and animated films. Release dates are staggered in different companies due to distribution rights and also because competition and audience targeting is different in different countries. Example: June 13th may be a fine release date in most countries, but maybe there's another popular kids movie that's only popular in Australia coming out that weekend there. The Austrailian distributors would make the decision when to release it. I think there's also stuff like the "homegrown" arts laws in Canada which affect it,too. And for some reason, New Zealand always seems to get poo poo 4-6 months later than everyone else.

There are a lot of issues with Olive Oyl in the 1930s cartoons that just wouldn't fly today, but there's also a whole treasure trove of Popeye-related media to draw from, including years and years worth of comics that aren't as bad, so I don't really see what excuse anyone would have to continue the damsel-in-distress narrative, especially when Disney and Sony Pictures and to some extent Dreamworks keeps proving again and again that you will have more success when you subvert that than anything.

You do realize...that was just a test animation right? It was meant to show the characters in some of their classic roles and how their animation could possibly look. Heck, in it it looked like Olive Oyl and Popeye were both in distress with only The Jeep being effective.

To be honest, I didn't even watch the video, I just know that people in here are expressing concerns about the movie being rapey. (Or that people will complain that it is), and those are both dumb and unfounded statements.

Genndy directly says in the video "This is not a clip. This is not a trailer. This is not going to be in the movie. This is test footage."

The film hasn't even been greenlit yet.

TheBigBudgetSequel posted:

The video has Olive Oyl being chased by pirates. It's not any where near as outright terrible as the old cartoons, but i could see it upsetting the modern tumblr audiences if they don't give her something more than just being the girl Popeye has to rescue.

Just so we're clear, I'm not saying I have any opinions one way or another on test footage that I haven't watched. I am just pointong out that IF the movie were made, and IF people had issues with Olive Oyl in it, which some people here seem to think might happen, that would be frustrating because of how unneeded it is. If anything, I'm saying that there's a lot of way to mitigate the issues that we've all thought that this non-existent film in the future might have.

God, that is stupid for me to have to type and this is a stupid discussion.
