What amazes me about The Nut Job is the lip sync is so bad I actually thought my theater's audio was off and I was tempted to go complain before it got to the feature (it was the first trailer). Glad I waited because it was literally because they don't line up.

If it's a movie, I don't think it matters what style it's made in. If Vargo disagrees, that's fine but I just don't see a good reason not to talk about a movie just because it's Anime. I mean if we can talk about Ghibli, I don't see why not. I know Ghibli is way better than average but quality isn't what this thread is about as the OP clearly shows.

My only concern here would be that it's a followup film to a pre-existing anime series. But this issue hasn't been a huge problem yet so it seems premature for rules about it.

I think that has less to do with Disney getting out of traditional animation and more to do with the rise of indie films and it becoming easier to make an animated movie on a lower budget.

Yeah, this would be my suspicion. Computers changed traditional animation a lot, too.

By the way, Jennifer Hager was on Frozen, and I remember her from her Youtube demo reel ages ago. She's on her way to the top it seems :3:.

Kung Fu Panda is, in my mind, far and away the best thing Dreamworks has done. I like the second one as well, albeit less so. It's good, it just doesn't feel like it brings anything new to the table.

I find Shrek 2 really fun, honestly. It paved the way, like the original Shrek, for a lot of things that were later overdone, but that's not Shrek 2's fault. I feel like many films benefit from being seen in the context of their time, not just stuff like Snow White where you're like "Oh my god does anything HAPPEN in this loving movie?"

I haven't seen Despicable Me 2, but that's actually sorta sad. The first one was really nice and cute in that respect. Are there many animated kids' movies that specifically deal with similar themes and an unconventional family structure, and end the movie unambiguously saying "you know what, this is just as okay as anything else"? The only thing that immediately comes to mind is Lilo & Stitch, I guess.

I thought this was an interesting article about Kung Fu Panda (the franchise) in China.

Chinese representatives invited Katzenberg to Chengdu and were quite surprised by how it went.

quote:

It is safe to assume that the government expected to pay for having parts of Chengdu’s culture portrayed in the film, because Hebei Province happily invested in the movie Aftershock, about the Tangshan earthquake of 1976. So when Katzenberg said that he would put scenery from Chengdu into Kung Fu Panda 2 “as a gift to the children of the disaster zone” and when Zibach gushed that “I was so delighted and moved by Mt. Qingcheng that I insisted it be a major feature of the sequel,” the city of Chengdu was taken aback:

Chengdu officials met with the film people for dinner in Kuan Zhai Xiangzi and Jeffrey Katzenberg came out directly and said that he would put elements of the Chengdu into the movie. The officials were surprised because they assumed they would have to pay out a large sum of money in order to have that happen.

For the Chengdu government, Kung Fu Panda and it’s sequel are direct representations of the culture and beauty of the city. The pandas, the mountain scenes, all of the streetside vendors — according to their PR releases, these were directly inspired by Chengdu. The government’s goal was PR and ultimately profits, so for them the elements of China within the movie were not only adequate, but outstanding.

Between The Wind Rises and Frozen, I'd say The Croods chances at a win are slim to none, but I'm pleased to see it land a nomination regardless.

Right, I think it deserves a nomination, definitely not a win. But I really like the style of it all and admired its tough message.

It's sort of your place in life to set up the future generations and help them become and do things you won't be able to understand.

Jay Dub posted:

In a purely technical sense, I think The Croods definitely stands toe to to with the rest of them. Some of the animation is gorgeous, particularly the scenes of the family on the move, where it seems like everyone is running 50 miles per hour. The film has an incredible sense of motion to it, which feeds into its theme of forward momentum vs stagnation.

Oh, from a solely technical point of view it might be my favorite of the year--similar to how, from a purely technical point of view, Hotel Transylvania is one of my favorite computer-animated films of all time. But that's not enough for a win this year. 2006, sure.

At some point you need to weigh intent against realized message because agree with it or not, a huge number of people independently developed the libertarian read of Incredibles. I don't wholly agree but I don't wholly disagree either; to me it's backed up by more in the film that some of the other interpretations of animated films that are more widely accepted.

Everyone hates "Morning Report" and Pocahontas is actually very stiff and weird (I watched it just the other day while housecleaning). However, the rest of your assessment fits into my experience with the film. I get annoyed when people go herp-derp Stockholm Syndrome too, since it's all about the Beast changing. Belle can't fall in love until she's freed and sees that his affection was deep and genuine, that's kind of the entire loving point.

Oh, and another thing about BatB: according to Lumiere, they've been under the Enchantress's curse for 10 years, and since the curse stipulates that it has to be broken before the Beast's 21st birthday, it means she cursed the guy when he was 11 years old. Like, I get that he was being a dick but that Enchantress was kind of maybe overreacting a little bit!

I love Beauty and the Beast but the timeline is completely hosed up and makes no sense, especially if you dare to factor in the sequel.

Gantu went a little too far but I don't disagree with him that much, I would say Bubbles and the Universal Ruler are solidly not villains though.

If anything the compassionate villain is Stitch.

I just saw the Croods, and I liked all but the last few minutes of it. It feels like an executive came in and went "hold up, hold up, hold up, you can't end a movie like that! There's kids watching!" Yeah, movies aimed at kids generally don't end on any sort of down note these days, but I liked the bittersweet ending that seemed to be coming together, where Grug sacrifices it all so his family could survive. His parting moments where they all realize they he's not coming with and his invention of the "hug", along with the following scene of him doing that last painting in the dark was really quite touching. Cut to the family blowing their shells after that to say goodbye before rolling the credits (maybe with some more Eep narration to book-end things) would have wrapped things up nicely. But it feels like the movie chickened out completely at the end. I'm not a proponent of dark or gritty endings because I feel like they're more "mature" by default. I argued that Flynn Rider staying dead in Tangled would have been stupid and counter-thematic. However, a less than perfect ending in the Croods would have fit the theme of evolving, progressing, and moving on, and the old ways unfortunately having to be left behind to seek a new means of living. Oh well.

In my mind, it would have been one of the right films to take that stand. However, it had the impact it wanted when it wanted. I don't think most people watch films multiple times.

It's a great conflict and it helped solidify The Croods as one of my top three animated films of 2013.
