That stuff hasn't been to major so far. This episode covered chapter 1 and 2. They cut a few bit's from those two and added a few from chapter 3. Some of the parts they cut are probably just going to be in the next episode.

Netflix will air it after the show ends all at once in typical Netflix style. Hulu doesn't have the license to it.

Looks quite nice, the green roofs fit in with the medieval exterior aesthetic they have going (despite the japanese interior designs).

Quite a while. Verticals volume 11 is coming-out in October if I remember correctly. /m/ is currently translating volume 11 and should be done with it within a few weeks. Once they're done with it fan translations may end up resuming at a more regular pace depending on if they feel like it, since volume 11 is what was stopping them from continuing. I believe the Current Japanese volume is 13.

I think the general gist of it was that Ochiai, being a hardcore transhumanist, backed up his personality and memory into a neural parasite/hijacker-thing and the Sidonia missed it when they were arresting him. Kunato just stumbled onto it since his family were tasked with guarding/maintaining Ochiai's lab. The cactus and little robot might have been some kind of sensor/trigger for the activation of the thing, or to make sure only one person emerged alive from the lab to avoid messes, or just general weird poo poo Ochiai was into.

This manga is really good if your willing to accept that the author will always let his story of humanities survival get in the way of telling a really gripping tale of a harem in the distant post human future. Hopefully the anime will work on it's pacing so we can get to our favorite cute girls who may be guana.

It's not really a pacing issue so much as I don't know if it can really get that far unless they're willing to slice out an enormous segment of plot, since I think it only has a run of 13 episodes. The pacing has been quite good so far.

A few things I appreciate about this manga, other than the gripping harem aspects are:

1. Sidonia has enough resources. They never seem to be worrying about material resources. In fact, we don't see the manufacturing facilities, but they exist, and how. They're making new stuff all the time, and their tech is pretty drat sweet. That big ball of ugly stuff surrounding the ship appears to be a resource blob, and they get new resources all the time. I appreciate this fact as the story can focus on harem antics (and ancillary, humanity's quest for survival) rather than whining about how they're running out of titanium, etc.

2. Sidonia itself is over a 1,000 years old, but it's not some broken down hulk limping along. The ship is quite nimble for its size, and it has an active, working and wide range of weapons -- including planet busters. It's not that the people of Sidonia can't make new weapons, it's that they can't make weapons that'll kill the Guana because the Guana are just that hard to kill. They are making progress though through the series and have gotten a lot better at killing Guanas.

3. Humanity's versatility -- over a thousand years have passed and we have a ton of transhuman capabilities. Ageless (immortals, but they can be killed), intersex people, cyborgs, bears, and so forth. Pretty cool. Why isn't everyone "immortal" though, if they can make one person, why not everyone?

4. While we don't hear much about the pilots and their battle with g-forces as they pilot their mechs, Sidonia itself suffers from g-forces when on the run from Guanas. I just wonder how the oceans fared when they blasted their engines to escape that one Guana early on.

Some thoughts:

1. Seii Ichiro -- gave up his position as XO to Yuhata because he recognized her talent and realized she would do a much better job than he would. He probably wanted to get back to piloting a mech anyway. I like the way her talent was recognized early on and used. I do wonder how he noticed this. She had to be just one junior trainee among hundreds of trainees.

2. I didn't know that Kunato was responsible for Hoshijiro's death. I reread the manga for that, and it's not apparent to me. Kunato flips a switch and something shows up on a screen, and I guess Tanikaze is supposed to do something, and doesn't because he didn't realize he was supposed to, and Hoshijiro dies? Can anyone explain that further?

3. Seems to me the Guana "eat" a human and then "learn" the ability to mimic that human. But, they vacillate between wanting to use this newfound ability to destroy more humans or maybe communicate with them? So far, it seems like destroying is more the norm except for when Benisuzume/Hoshijiro tongue-tentacle frenchs Tanikaze a few chapters back That's a kiss to remember! (Tanikaze gets all the girls, doesn't he? Was this his first kiss?) I do wonder if they're trying, in some way, to communicate.

4. We don't know much about the Guana, but they seem to have some sort of society as they travel in large groups. Right? It'd be nice to learn more about them. I feel like this is Attack of the Titans where we have no idea what the Titans are about. We have no idea what the Guana are about either. Except, the Titans seem more threatening to me. I don't know why I feel that way, though.

5. Shiraui Tsumugi is the best. There were a couple of scenes where I actually burst out laughing while reading the manga. One for sure is when she just appears while Izana and Yuhata are taking a bath at Tanikaze's house. The other was when she opened the door and met Yuhata for the first time at the same house. Tanikaze is like, "Where's Tsumugi? We have to hide her, quick!" and she's opening the door like she owned the place.

The team was supposed to fire their weapons in sync to cut off the Gauna's tail, and Kunato was supposed to coordinate that by giving everyone the fire command simultaneously. However, Kunato secretly gave Tanikaze the order to fire before the others, by switching from team communication to personal communication mid-sentence. So to everyone else it looked like Tanikaze fired early for no reason and screwed up their formation, ultimately leading to Hoshijiro's death. Kunato didn't intentionally try to kill anyone, he just wanted Tanikaze to look bad.

Tanikaze's look of confusion immediately afterward is because he's not sure why no one else fired when the order was given.

I got the impression the "ocean" is more a giant fish tank than an open air lake. Which makes sense, because that would cause a total disaster if they had to maneuver.

I actually think there's a cutaway of Sidonia at some point that shows where the water tanks are located, but I'm way too lazy to go look for it.

1. They actually deal with the resource thing at the very beginning. That first gauna appearance was during a routine asteroid mining operation; they seem to simply collect any space rocks they happen to pass by with the Gardes.

3. It's implied that the immortals are a secret, which may be why the Captain wears a mask in public and nobody actually knows who she is. Why this is isn't explicitly stated, but I would wager it's a combination of resource/living space limitations and perhaps some ethical concerns with the ramifications of never aging and dying. Tanikaze's grandfather opted out of taking his Immortality Juice for some reason, after all.

4. The Titans seem a bit more threatening and brutal because of the tech level and scale differences. When someone dies messily in Sidonia it's usually their mech getting swatted/crushed by a giant space monster rather than their squishy human body being visibly dismembered/crushed/eaten. Also the Titans are being fought with lovely Renaissance technology that doesn't work at all while Sidonia is shown to have a lot more effective options for evading/repelling Gauna even at the beginning when the Kabizashi are the only way to score true kills.

I thought they kept the immortals a secret so there was no inherit animosity/jealousy between the population and the people in charge. Everyone would want to be immortal, which they can't do when regular people are presumably necessary for both re-population and diversifying the genetic pool.

The inhabitants of Sidonia are remarkably calm about the ocean hanging right over their heads. The thought of the bulkheads failing and all that rushing down :gonk:. Aside from that, Sidonia's design is one of my favorite parts of the manga, especially now that the Captain's made some changes over the last few chapters. Looking forward to seeing what purpose they serve once things heat up, too.

1. They probably were already watching her due to high scores or hey, her sibling's made the cut and become a pilot, better see if the family has skills too.

4. I don't know how canon the pages with sketches are but ones like the "gauna's copy of Sidonia" (don't remember what chapter) give some interesting ideas. Going off what's been confirmed in the latest chapters, it sounds like they seek out civilizations of a sufficiently advanced level.

5. This is correct. Something about a :dong:-looking defender of humanity looking at pictures of cats and having sleepovers is just amazing.

So far the anime's been pretty good. the animation's pretty good in my opinion and the sound design and general feel of it is really good. The big burn that they did felt a lot more tense for me in the show than in the manga (the submarine like creaks on the bridge were a really good touch.)

Biomega had a great style even for Nihei and I wish it hadn't kinda crazily fallen apart there at the end. Was it cancelled and he had to wrap it up fast or something? Because it felt like there was way more there to be told but then suddenly NOPE it's over. Not that I can really complain if it got us more Sidonia.

The next chapter is already being translated (thanks /m/) and finally the robot girl says what everyone else has studiously ignored.
