College Station is actually closer to Dallas than Lubbock (the only big city near both of them) so even if you think it's a decrepit shithole you only have to spend ~2-3 hours driving (less to go to Houston or Austin) to get to somewhere fun.

A&M's football schedule: I think South Carolina is a loss but other than that it's possible that we win all of them up to Alabama. After that I could either see 1-3 or 3-1 depending on how Auburn and Mizzou do (and/or which LSU team decides to show up on Thanksgiving).

Democratic Pirate posted:That does suck. The atmosphere of big games is always fun, but I can definitely see the appeal of staying home/at a frat house/at your tailgate when there are other games on and your team isn't playing a big game. Especially when it's 100 degrees outside and miserable in the stands. Or it's an 11 am kickoff, or if your team plays lovely but wins anyway (which was really the problem with A&M last season). I'm definitely going to a home game this season to see how they've changed the student section but there's only like 3 games that are interesting (LSU, Mizzou, and Ole Miss).

Thermos H Christ posted:I didn't get the impression that low student attendance was a big problem for A&M the last couple years. But picking up on what Democratic Pirate said, I was at the Alabama game and there is no way I could have endured that heat for that length of time if it wasn't such a big matchup. People were bitching this past season about everyone bringing their grandparents so it wasn't as loud as it could've been but that may have just been rationalization for our losses/near losses. There's also a bit of a scandal regarding ticket pulling that I won't really get into but long story short for a lot of upperclassmen it was either get nosebleed seats or not show up, and I can see why they'd choose the latter.

I honestly kinda' laughed at him because he was skittish as I drove him around the city; I certainly didn't see any cause for alarm. I suppose they don't have a very large population of black folks in Arizona. Outside of California you will not see a large amount of black people in the West (usually Hispanics are the minority of choice). As an extreme example, in Idaho they represented 0.4% of the population, which at the time was roughly five thousand people. (I believe Montana is the lowest for percentage and absolute value right now with only 4,000 black people or about 0.67%).

This is getting kind of e/n-y but they literally pick positions for every major role in student government from their own ranks and then vote as a block for them. Sort of a college version of the old white people who always vote. There's literally no reason to do this except to dickwave, which you could tell by the similar amount of effort they put into the band shows.

Thoguh posted:ISU gets a lot of deserved crap for being bad at football. But it is a huge step above all but a very small handful of non BCS conference schools when it comes to just about everything related to being an FBS school long term. Really the NCAA just needs to actually enforce the FBS attendance requirements and the situation would take care of itself. Though upping the requirement to 20k would be even better. Going higher than 20k is probably overkill since that would start to cut off a bunch of MAC and MWC schools. I think Boise State only has like a 25k seat stadium too. Maybe it should just be a percentile based system with a minimum baseline for stadium size.
