"I'm the boss of space. That's plenty."
Music

Five miles outside of Westchester, New York, it's a lovely winters morning. There's a hint of frost on the grass outside but the kitchen's warm and the breakfast's getting cleared away, boxes full of cereal back in cupboards and spreads back in the refrigerator. The school itself had everything that you could have wanted. A tennis court out the back in the gardens near the hedge maze, an outdoor pool that would be pretty great by the time summer rolled around but was fairly frozen up at the moment, shared rooms and even individual dormitories for some of the older attendees. Mahogany floors, wood panelled walls and high ceilings. Classrooms for those old enough to be in school and a garage-cum-workshop that Forge would often lose himself in for hours. Xavier had never turned anyone that wanted to stay at the school away and the number of students was growing with each passing week. He'd already rebuilt the boiler to allow it to have hot water all day at basically zero additional running cost but the piping in the huge mansion didn't seem like it would be good enough to keep the heat in. He'd finished working on that prototype helmet thing for Xavier. Some kind of cerebral amplifier. Said it'd let him track mutants down from further away and Charles had given it a shot yesterday. One migraine later and he'd found someone that would need picking up ASAP.

Not everyone was cut out for being in the X-Men. Some of the students were too young, didn't have the right personality for the team, didn't have abilities that really jived with what the Professor had in mind for the team or were simply too damaged to do anything with at the moment. Some of the stories coming in from around the world from mutants that had made it to the school made it sound like things out there were getting bad. America wasn't that bad, especially compared with some places on the other side of the world, far from the minds of socially minded advocates in Washington and New York. Xavier had been surprised when some of the more seasoned mutants arrived at the school but he wouldn't turn anyone away. Even someone that worked with his ideological competitor was welcome. Rogue had seen more than her share of troubles and had even caused some of it herself but Xavier had listened. He'd heard her talk and kept his calm about it, nodding and understanding. Anger was not the way to go about changing the mind of humanity at large. Change would be slow but it would come and it would be a better change than the change proposed by Eric. Still, it was strange, that Xavier would sometimes talk of inviting Eric back to the house. Let him come in, bring one of his cronies with him, and try to talk through their differences. He'd opened up to her in ways she hadn't expected. Started talking about his plans, his hopes and what he wanted. Xavier was a dreamer, that was for sure, and the picture of the world as he painted it sure looked better than the one that Eric had shown. Couple that with the uniforms (costumes?) and he seemed to be somewhere between hopeful, whimsical and deadly serious about this. Still, the outfits didn't look that bad. Yellow was bright and the midnight blue looked okay. It might be a tough sell to that Wisdom guy, though.

The Professor was, as always, the first awake in the house apart from some of the students that didn't seem to sleep. He'd taken breakfast in his office, written out the lesson plans for the day before closing the door with Pete Wisdom in his office. Behind closed doors, Wisdom was allowed to listen in on Xavier's conversations with Jimmy Woo. He'd worked with government types before but there was something inherently different about the way that the Septic's did their dirty work. They were less honest about it and you always had a feeling that, at the end of a working day, they wouldn't be interested in going for a bitter. This call was no different. ATLAS would be shipping up two new mutants that had come in and they'd need room and board. One of them could create and manipulate ice. The other seemed to have chitinous skin.

Xavier stood up from behind his desk and rubbed the back of his bald head. "Who knew that trying to save the next stage of human evolution would involve so much paper work," he muttered with a slightly thin smile at Wisdom. He looked more tired than he had when Pete had arrived at the school.

The radio in the kitchen was still on as Molly sat at the breakfast bar on the high stool. Her feet didn't quite make it to the ground and it felt a little weird to have them on the horizontal bar between the chair legs. Yup. Molly Hayes, right there in the middle of it as always. She'd been in the training room the day before, getting a decent workout before collapsing in a heap in her bed. The Professor had told her that it was all about gathering information so he could give it to 'Moira' when 'Moira' got here. Who the heck was Moira and what was so important about her? What could she do that the Professor couldn't? Was she a mutant?

John 'Thunderbird' Wakiya had been in the training room when the Professor had gathered the numbers for her strength testing. He'd not seen someone deadlift like that since... well, since himself. He could see from those numbers though that for the month that Molly had been at the school, she'd gotten another five percent stronger. She was, eventually, going to be a force to be careful around but there was a slightly difficult feeling in the back of the former black ops warrior's mind that, maybe, taking her into dangerous or difficult situations could work out bad. Not just in the short term. He'd seen more than his share of kids that had been given too much too fast and it'd made them sick. He sat over from Molly having just finished his own breakfast.

Sitting over from the world's oddest couple of special forces headcase and bright eyed teenaged superhuman, Remy was powering through a mug of coffee that was so dark it reminded him of the sort of swamp water you were always told to steer well clear of. He'd not been at the school for long but the time he had spent there had been interesting enough. That agent from ATLAS had, more or less, left him be which suited Gambit just fine. Hell, less people he had peepin' over his shoulder the better for everyone. He'd spent some time lookin' at the newspaper this mornin'. Seemed fairly standard. Some noise about Russia's release of prisoners from some American boat that got a little too close to enemy territory. Huh. The United States Air Force was gonna blast a chimp named Ham into space. Seemed a little excessive but, hey, if they wanted to put a monkey in space who was he to argue?

Welcome to The Sixties. You're right at the start of the mutant revolution. Kennedy is in the White House, the cold war is just starting to take flight, the jet age is beginning, popular music is about to shift hard and the civil rights movement is really gathering pace. You're right on the edge of the most tumultuous period in American history since the 1860s and you're big ol' wild cards.

Forge

Wiping his hands on a rag, or at least redistributing the oil and grease more evenly across his weathered skin, Adam sauntered into the kitchen and felt immediately like sauntering back out again. But instead he smiled and made a beeline for the coffee. Some of the projects that Charles - Xavier, he reminded himself, stay formal for now - had him working on were exhausting. Not physically, but for some reason he felt a little tired out. A "hyperactive subconscious", Xavier had called it. "Thinking without thinking."

Which sounded kind of insulting, actually, now that he gave it some thought.

He pours himself a mug of the thick coffee, and gulps down half of it right there and then. "So, uh," he begins, clearing his throat a little as he tops himself off. "I've got the heating going properly, finally. So take all the hot showers you like, I guess."

Absent-mindedly scratching his nose with his thumb, leaving a dark smudge that trails over his cheek, he lifts his mug and gives a nod. "So, uh, g'morning to you."

Give me the secret to the anti-puppet equation!

Pete Wisdom

Pete had listened, mostly quietly, while Woo and Xavier had discussed the issues of the day. He was still trying to figure out Xavier's game, but appreciated being able to use his skill set to help. Why was that, Pete wondered? Everything back home at MI:13 had changed so abruptly, everyone suddenly being bothered by Pete's powerset even while having a literal vampire hanging around. And now Pete finds a man with telepathic and mind-control powers rumored to have tampered with election results? He really couldn't help being suspicious, it was his nature. Though if Xavier was controlling minds to that degree, couldn't he make sure that Pete would never be suspicious of his motives? But then Pete would lose that cynical nature that made him such a brilliant agent, making it pointless to have him at the school. Pete started getting distracted, mulling it over before suddenly realizing the obvious - that Xavier was right in front of him, and giving him a thin smile. Pete suddenly remembered himself and abandoned his analysis of the telepath's motives, instead playing a game of Solo Whist in his head - it was the only thing that Pete had thought up to keep his mind busy and hopefully avoid his mind being read. Whether it was working or not, or even necessary, Pete had no clue. Xavier was harder to read than anyone Pete had met before.

"Yea, well, if there's one things spooks love it's paperwork." Pete gave Xavier a wry grin before standing himself and adjusting his tie. "Still, an ice shaper's a jammy find. Should be useful, eh?" Pete starts to head for the door. "What's the schedule then, Prof? Does the canary crowd feel like causing any explosions today? Got an appointment with a pint and a smoke myself." Pete always enjoyed antagonizing Americans about their lack of subtlety and planning, the bright yellow costumes being a particularly favorite target for derision.

Not a cute boy, just a boring girl.
Rogue
Anna is lounging next to a window with a mostly eaten bowl of cereal. She turns to Forge as he comes in. "Ah nice. It was gettin' annoyin' to heat all my own water without it all evaporating. Yer a dear." Crunch, crunch, crunch goes the cereal as she absently looks outside, wandering in thought. Not too concerned about the banter regarding daily activities, her thoughts trailed to the whispers of the other students, and wondering what the Brotherhood was up to.

quote:

Anna Marie (Rogue)
Anna Marie’s past is a long, troubled, and storied one. Her mother disappeared when she was young, so she was raised by her strict disciplinarian aunt. She ran away from home to live as a vagabond, and eventually met a man her age. When she kissed him for the first time, her mutation activated, nearly killing him. She fled the scene, unsure what to do. It wasn't long after that she was approached by Mystique to join the Brotherhood of Mutants and advance their cause. Not having anywhere else to go, and not knowing what to do with her powers, she accepted. On Rogue’s first mission, she battled Sunfire, draining away his powers, memories, and eventually his life.

Rogue was not mentally prepared for the assimilation of this other persona. Rogue began to experience the memories Sunfire had of the Brotherhood, and gained a new perspective on what she was doing. In anguish, she ran away again, arriving at the doors of Xavier Institute, begging for help. The Professor was unable to do a psychic scan of her, due to the clashing portions of her psyche, but nonetheless decides to not only welcome her into the school, but make her a probationary member of the X-Men. This was a controversial decision with several members threatening to leave, but Xavier was adamant and convinced everyone to stay.

"Peter," said Xavier - no one apart from Charles Xavier called him Peter - with a little bit of weary frustration in his voice, "I let you sit in on my phone calls here because I sometimes have need of your wisdom and council." He started to walk around to the front of his desk. "They're scheduled to be here by tomorrow afternoon at the latest. Neither of them have had especially troubled journeys here but it's worth keeping in mind that there could be unexpected outcomes. Today, though, there's going to be a more full bodied rescue, I think," he said. "There's someone out there that needs our help. Shall we take breakfast and bring everyone else on board?"

Pete grimaces a bit at Xavier's use of his full name. Didn't have to be a mindreader to know how much that irritated him. Still, Pete figured he probably deserved it some though with how much he dishes it out. "Yea, alright. You getting the heebie-jeebies again, Prof? Who is it this time? A one-inch tall telepathic septuagenarian? A teenaged boy who shoots lightning from his arse?" Pete pulls out his cigarettes and prepares to light up as he sighs, deciding that it might be in poorer taste than usual to joke about a fellow mutant in danger. "Well, if they need help we'd better give it to them, right? Got any black pudding in yet? Or is there just oats and milk out there?"

"I'm the boss of space. That's plenty."
"It's a teenaged boy that found out he was a mutant last night," said Xavier. "Joshua Foley. He's in New Jersey and lives with his family and their friends as part of the Reavers, an outlaw motorcycle club. If you've not heard of them they're exactly what you think they are." There was this cold, dismissive tone to Charles' voice. He didn't get it very often but, when he did, there was a feeling that somehow, everyone was just a rat in a maze to him. "Miss Laurie Collins was chained to his father's motorcycle and she was dragged through the town of Hillsburn until she was dead simply because her skin had given her the ability to mimic her surroundings. Joshua rode with his father but, now that he knows he's a mutant, fears for his safety. No matter who you are, or what you have done, if you seek asylum with us then we will take you in."

Xavier stopped, his hand on the door knob out of his office.

"I'll leave it to your discretion how much of that information is passed onto the rest of the team."

Pete lights his cigarette and frowns. "Sounds like a lovely chap. I'm sure we'll have a blast saving him." With that final note of irritation Pete follows Charles Xavier towards breakfast. Seeing the assorted mutants gathered around eating, Pete set about making himself some tea, ignoring the hot coffee the septics have been guzzling, and calls over his shoulder to them. "Prof says we've got a live one to fetch. Young motorbike enthusiast scared that his pop'll axe him now that he's got his powers. Sounds like a great kid, we should have a lot of fun bringing him on." Pete's rather cold expression tells them all they need to know about his feelings on this matter, despite his sarcastic phrasing. "And you haven't heard the best part - it's in New Jersey! The loveliest part of America!" He started to search around for some milk and honey for his tea as he continued. "Anybody feel like beating some bikers silly?"

"So, uh, is that including me or not?" Adam was not particularly used to Brits - he'd been on the other side of the world during WWII, and hadn't run across many during his time in Korea. Pete Wisdom was, additionally, rather more boisterous than Adam's general perception of the typical Brit. "I think that Xavier - the Professor - did want me to bang some of the kinks out of his new gizmo, but... I have had some experience with bikers before, outlaw or not. I could be helpful. We might not need to get rough with anyone."

He looks pointedly at Remy when he says this, but he feels like he should be looking over in Molly's direction instead. The kid shouldn't be hearing about stuff like this. There were better ways to deal with people than fist-first, and with Molly's particular aptitude, that might end badly for everyone involved.

MAGE CURES PLOT
Molly Hayes

Molly had been chattering at John (well-meaning but obnoxiously) all morning about her training and progress. In front of her were two empty bowls of cereal, a plate holding the crumbs of half a dozen eggs over easy, the rind of an orange, a couple crusts of toast, and an empty glass of milk. The professor says that until her gift and metabolism stabilized, she'd need to make sure she had enough calories to burn or else she could hurt herself.

As Pete and Adam walk in, Molly is nursing a cup of the same strong black coffee as the grown-ups. Remy'd told her it might be a good idea to develop a taste for it given her unique "side effects". No luck so far, it's revolting stuff.
"Thank you for the hot water Mr. Valentine. I'm very grateful for it-"

She perks up at the mention of saving another mutant kid though.
"I hope we can get there in time, I'll grab my jacket, meet y'all outside, Time to be HEROES! I'll be ready inna minuuuute!" Molly gushes as she runs out of the dining area and up the stairs to her dormroom.

but you still have what you wanted. This is an important choice to make for some heroes,
who don’t want to cause lasting harm but still need to deliver a knockout punch.
If you stress an opponent out but choose to pull your punch, so to speak, he recovers
all but d6 of the stress at the beginning of the next Transition Scene or when an ally
uses a recovery action. This represents the “Did anyone catch the license plate of that
truck?” effect of some battles.

As Pete watches the girl leave he turns to the others and sips his tea. "They're a violent anti-mutant gang. I didn't want to say this in front of the girl, but they're killers. Already murdered one of us. The boy's good as dead if we can't get to him first."

Remy was dancing a smoke out of the pack and across his fingers as he leaned up against their ride, waiting for everyone to assemble. He pulled his jacket closer round him with a sigh, lighting the tip with a touch of his finger. Taking a drag, he rested one hand on the sword in his coat, feeling the reassuring touch of the handle in his grip.

"This should be a pretty easy one, right? Just another mutant kid like me needin a helpin hand?" Molly asks no one in particular.

She nods her head quickly, realizing (yet again) that she's made herself look like a naive little girl in front of people who might depend on her.

Molly hunches down into her Blue and Gold uniform Jacket, trying to get what John calls her "game face" on. The clothing feels odd, to say nothing of the colors, but the Professir himself'd assured her they were necessary.

John Wakiya looks up from an enormous plate of scrambled eggs and pastrami, one of the few things about New York he fully enjoys. "Wisdom, I brought back some pemmican from South Dakota. It's smoky, but not as much as your awful cigarettes." Upon hearing the news, he finishes quickly and addresses the girls. "Looks like field training today. I hope you're ready for a trial by fire. You may get to use your powers--carefully--in a tense situation."

He rinses his plate in the sink and absent-mindedly grabs his fringed leather jacket from his chair. "But if you hit anyone too hard, well, they're just bikers. Dress warm."

Anna rubs a fist into one of her palms as a final check of her gloves. "Either way, any lesson deliverin' can be finished when our kid's out of the picture and can't be held a hostage. If we get the opportunity to get him out of there before the lead starts flyin', seems to me that we should take it. It'll make our job easier at least."

"That's a good point, if we do this carefully, none of this gang are going to know we were even there," adds Adam. He didn't know much about actually being part of a rescue mission, but he knew how this sort of thing went. In theory. "We slip in, we slip out, no muss, no fuss. Last thing we want is to kickstart another Hollister riot on the East Coast."

He glanced around for a moment at the youthful faces. "Maybe you guys are a little young to remember that one."

Pete smiles wryly as he tokes his cigarette, and finishes his tea as he nods to John. Never heard of pemmican before, but maybe it'll be a little better than the crap they call sausage around here. He wanders to go gather his breakfast together and wait for the others to get their costumes on. After he finishes he returns to talk with the Professor and make sure he's gathered all the necessary info.

"So, Prof, you got a reading on their exact location, or at least the town they were last seen? The others are getting their super suits on, figured I would get the sit rep from you." He pulls out another cigarette as he awaits an answer.

"Well," said Xavier, "it seems a lot like the Reavers have a controlling interest in the town. They have a clubhouse on main street and the Foley residence is on one of the outlying streets. Daily Avenue," said Xavier correcting himself. Hillsburn was a small little town - four long roads running north to south that had seven roads crossing over them east to west. It was rectangular when viewed from above. "You'll know him when you see him. His skin is starting to turn gold."

Everyone that posted reactions in the recruit gets 1 XP.

Also I have a feelin' that unless you all want to be driving a station wagon one of you is gonna have to fly/ride a motorcycle or something. Flight isn't that big an ask for Rogue and motorcycling is easy for Forge.

"So what's our vehicle situation? I could fly an' get there well before any of ya, but it's probably best to have a low profile goin' in. Someone speedin' through the air could catch some eyes on landing. It might give away our hand before the time is right."

"Well, I'm in the car I know. Not sure who'll be driving though - doubt you want me forgetting which side of the road to drive on and killing us all..." He grins and heads for the passenger seat of the station wagon. "Forge, you've got your bike, right? Maybe that'll attract the kind of attention we need, eh?"

His motorcycle roared like a tiger and purred seductively as he started her up. She wasn't much to look at, a little dinged and dented, the metal not as shiny as it could have been. But behind that unassuming façade was power and performance.

Sitting on his pride and joy next to that station wagon made him feel a little guilty.

"I'll, uh, I'll see what I can do about fixing us up some better transportation," he says, shrugging on his leather jacket over the top of his uniform. It hadn't taken long for him to get out of his overalls, but putting on the yellow-and-blue uniform had been tricky. Something else to redesign, perhaps. "But when we get back, y'know? I think time is of the essence on this."

He revs his bike a couple of times, the sound filling the garage, and takes her out slowly. No sense in ditching his team right off the bat.

"I'm the boss of space. That's plenty."
The journey down to Jersey didn't take that long. It was barely over two hours and, with the radio on and the anticipation of the mission head was enough to keep people really rather on edge about this whole thing. It just seemed to stack up the closer everyone got. Even Forge was hanging back on his cycle when, really, he could have sped off ahead of the rest of the team. Knowing what they knew and just how important this was, saving the life of another human being, there was a certain amount of tension. Closing in. Looked like the town was quiet - late morning and they hadn't passed a single car in going on fifteen minutes now.

The main road into town branched off at a crossing into another road that ran around the outside of the town. It seemed like a town that had grown up in uniformity around the mainstreet but, as the team got closer, it became more apparent that there was a bizarre uniformity to the place. It was a rectangle. No buildings beyond the outermost road. Everything built within the limits of the township. They drove past the church on the mainroad.

Pete observes the town carefully, taking in the general layout - what there was of it - and plotting out a plan. "Right. Good thought - best not to have all our resources locked up in here. Remy, pull us over. Anywhere'll do, not like any other bloody car's in sight anyway." As they exit the vehicle and Rogue and Forge join them, Pete starts walking. "So the boy lives on Daily Avenue with his racist pop. The gang also has a club on the main drag, and then there's the church. I figure those are the three locations that seem likely to actually contain people of interest to us at the moment. We can either head straight for the kid's residence in a group or split up and hit all three locations at once. Thoughts?"
