When men speak of the Moonsea they speak of treasure - and terror. Here are some of Faerun’s richest untapped resources, veins of gold as thick as ten dwarves and uncut trees to make an elf cry. Here too are the ruins of ancient kingdoms and lost caravans, and rumours of forgotten royal blades and wizards’ crowns. And here is the black heart of the tyrannical Zhentarim, their eye tyrants and sacrificial altars. Yet, here too are women and men fighting against the cold land, the barren soil, and the savage wildlife, to carve out safety and a good life for themselves. There is danger, and there is bravery, and there is reward-a-plenty for those willing to risk their lives.

Which is why you’ve come to Phlan. Phlan, many-shattered city, by war and orc and magic vile. Phlan has fallen so often the city is in a state of continual repair, regrowing and rebuilding among its own ruins. The most recent catastrophe was the evil spirit Tyranthraxus, some thirty years ago - and the latest plague a clammy affliction of greenish ichor brought by the Black Lord Bane’s return to the Realms. The greenfire cough still travels Phlan today, many of its citizens wheezing in the cold airs off the Moonsea. And cold is the air - even in the warmest moments of summer, the near-frozen Moonsea is responsible for zephyrs and eddies of cold air that snake off the sea and through Phlan’s streets, resting and chilling its squares and plazas.

Still, despite these hardships, Phlan is a good place for adventurers like yourselves. Money flows well here - from the city’s embattled noble families, looking for lost glories; from the Council of Ten, with this task or another; and from shadowy benefactors across the Sea of Dragons, asking for this forgotten trinket or a small task no one will surely remember. There is no lack of food here, fresh straw in the beds, and festhalls to spend the night in. Life is good.

But things never stay the same in the Moonsea, home to so much intrigue and so many shadows. Dare and beware, heroes - danger lurks around every corner, and glory follows on its heels.

Welcome to the IC thread for A Call For Heroes: The Moonsea! The OOC thread for the game is here. Please put all out-of-character notes in parentheses, and all in-character speaking in quotation marks. Dice are rolled wherever, however you see fit. We’re all adults: I trust you. You don’t need to repost your sheet, or post your character’s image with every post but you do need to bold your name. We’re going to try to make this read as smoothly as possible.

”What are ye doing here? said the leader, his crossbow pointed at your chest, his companions with axes and swords drawn behind him. You are trapped in the cul-de-sac, stuck between the rotting remains of Athbaer’s Tapestries and a set of row houses, your backs against a withered old tree that’s broken its way through the worn cobblestones on the ground. Behind you, the murderer reaches the roof, a wooden eavestrough collapsing under her boots, cracking in half on the ground below.

The gang leader doesn’t stop looking at you, just holds out a hand. “All your coin, now, or me and mine will take your heads off.” It’s the first day of Eleasias, couldn’t you go one day after Shieldmeet without being threatened with murder again? But no, someone found the handbill in the Slum Market, the Council of Ten looking for a woman in glossy red leather armour who knocked off a city wizard on Shieldmeet. The handbill was so fresh it stunk of ink, new off the Council’s gleaming, smoking press, a quick job to find the killer of Mathark Felibar. And then just after midsun you and your friends - quick friends brought together by fortune in this city where everyone whispers in shadows - spotted her ducking into Old Phlan.

So you gave chase, making no cries and yet not pretending to be silent at all, the beaten old roads throwing dust up as your boots slammed down again and again. She lead you on a merry chase, creeping at odd angles and running far faster than you probably could, but she didn’t lose you until now, when she scrambled up the tree like a cat and jumped for the roof. Even then, you could have circled around, ducked through these rotting old buildings - but only then did this other gang appear behind you, close you in and threaten you. Only now did your own mortality get added to the stakes. So with a crossbow pointed at your chest, with more quick death awaiting and a murderer getting away behind you, the question remains: what do you do?

Rowan Greenbridge

Rowan spreads her arms in a wide shrug, grinning disarmingly. The leather bands of her wrists sheathes flexed with the motion as she smiled broadly, the spring-loaded mechanism a twitch away from launching her weapons into her hands. Not yet. "Saers! I'm afraid you've caught us at a bad time. You see, we're chasing after a bounty because we're all out of coin ourselves." She kicks the fallen rooftile the woman just knocked off the roof, nudging it into the path in front of the gang leader and his not-compensating-for-anything oversized crossbow. "Of course, if you'd care to assist, perhaps we could split the reward when we bring her in? It would be a shame to lose all that potential money as it scurries away. Up there. On the roof. Getting away right now, in fact."

"Peace, friends." From behind the mask emerges a sonorous, smooth voice. "We have few coin on our persons. Much less than we would have, if we were allowed to catch the perpetrator of the murder committed at the Shieldmeet." The cloaked figure raises his hands as well, appearing in all aspects - except for the placid mask covering his face - an emissary of peace. "Holding us up is improfitable. But if you wish to be paid, allow us to pursue the suspect. If you do so, I will personally guarantee you will have at least my share of the money. That way, we will all benefit from this exchange. Does that not sound agreeable?"

Morn of Deepingdale

Morn is taken aback by the arrival of the crossbow-wielding individual and his gang, but soon slips "into character," putting on a wry smile and extending his arms as he bows. "Why hello there, Saer. I'd say it's a pleasure, but even a bard of my ability would not deign to pretend to be pleased at this sort of introduction. As my friends have indicated, there is much coin to be had for all involved, if only you would perhaps show your good faith by lowering your weapon. We mean you no harm."

While Sasha is all too happy to have a chance to catch a breath, he is none too happy at these gravel sucking gutter rats shaking them down. They would find the way of the world soon enough, no doubt. Still, he does little more than stand there, moustache drooping, knife in each hand, glaring at these miserable sons of bitches. The leader scowls at Rowan's offer. "Ye lot are with the guards and the lords and ladies. No, ye'll not give us any coin, just a trip to the Council's cellars to rot in chains!" Kamil's words find a softer ear, however. The leader looks you all up and down, before nodding. "Fine, but give me your coin-purse now, masked man. Last offer. We'll let ye go, but we won't be seeing ye again." As if to signal acceptance, the crossbow's point drops slightly towards the ground, out of range of your throats.

Tara: The murderer flits among the shadows, quickly ducking below the roofs for cover. Still, Midnight's eyesight is sharp, and your familiar sees the flash of the woman's red leather armour as she ducks into a covered stone bridge arching between two stout stone buildings a street away. If you leave now, you can still catch her - and by running after her on foot, no climbing required.

You close in on the covered stone bridge from all directions, hoping to cut off the scarlet murderess before she can lose you again. The old stone houses on either side must have been grand at one point, with fine copperwork candle-holders and well-made shutters closed against the cold. Creeping up to the second level where the bridge is, Sasha curses as his foot pushes through a rotting old board, a great *crack* echoing, scaring off the birds. On the other side, Tara looks into the bridge carefully, peeking around a corner.

There is no woman there, and no sign of her vividly dyed leather either. She's given you the slip again: but what is that? A large barrel midway along the bridge is sparking, and it's suddenly hot. "Duck!" one of you shouts, recognizing the keg of smokepowder almost too late. You dodge out of the way, and...

(Sasha, Kamil, and Tara take 3 fire damage each.
Rowan, Bries, Morn, and Lularie take 1 fire damage each.)

The keg explodes, blasting you all back as the bridge collapses in a cloud of dust and a storm of blocks flying in all directions. The flying parts of what was once the bridge smash against the stone walls around you, clattering to the ground. As your vision clears, you can see your comrades injured around you, but none of you severely or gone unconscious. Tymora smiles upon you.

She, alone, by herself goes off, and we, a group of seven, are stopped by what looks like a gang. After Rowan lets out that we're chasing her, the gang leader gets angry that we're working for the nobles. Rowan didn't say that though. Then, after being "cheated" by only getting 4 gold pieces, they let us by. But why? If it was just for money, then they thought they could take us, or else they wouldn't have stopped us, the larger group. But no, all they did was delay us from catching up to our mark to give her time to get away. I think there's a connection here, and we might also be able to find information regarding our original task if we can keep one alive for questioning. Perhaps the leader."

Bries finds nothing unexpected in the debris: burnt stone and ashen timber from the bridge and the barrel respectively, and a small amount of blackened, exhausted smokepowder: all that remains of the improvised explosive. Sasha does pluck a shattered piece of glass up, what looks to have been a potion vial. Tara's spell detects very little: a faint aura of evocation (matching what she knows of smokepowder's creation) and an even tinier echo of an illusion spell, lingering on the potion bottle.

Between Sasha's tracking and Midnight circling above, you find the gang of roughs a few streets over, relaxing in what remains of a ruined stable. The leader is sitting on a bay of rotting hay, biting noisily at an apple as you approach, some of his friends playing dice and snacking around him. "Ey, we're done with ye. Get and gone!"

Wait, something is wrong.
Sasha

The knives are out, and the knives are flashing. Sparks play along the blade. Sasha had traveled far, Sasha had learned much. The knives dance, and blood begins to flow. It is right, it is fitting. It is proper. The man before him would know well the folly of crossing one such as he, but he would probably not know it long.

WORDS IN THE HEART
CANNOT BE TAKEN
Rowan Greenbridge

Rowan steps out of a blind spot near the thugs, slipping past an overgrown bale of hay while drawing her swords. She casually slides one into the back of one of the thugs standing up, his friend's attention drawn by Sasha's charge. "Oh, don't get up." She pulls the blade out of his back, guiding the gurgling bandit down to the floor as she does so. "We won't be long."

Steppin' in to one of the Gang Toughs. I'd figured the one with 10 HP when I rolled but it's hard to specify without an identifier, so "that one".

The gang leader smiles through bloody lips, blood streaming down his face from a cut on his forehead. “I can give as good as I get, ye munchkin.” He beats Sasha back with a savage slice from his blade, his strike throwing the martial artist back and knocking him out.

(Gang Leader hits with a 23! Sasha takes 16 damage and is dying and unconscious!)
