Question about this. It uses the God-Machine Rules Update, yes? Things like the fifth dot of a merit or attribute not requiring two dots in character creation, Virtues and Vices not just being the Seven Heavenly/Deadly ones, etc.? I mean, Demon is written with those rules in mind, judging from its own rules, but I'd just like to be sure. (Edit: Though, given your talk about Beats and whatnot, it seems to be a "yes".) Also, while I first need to catch up on the games I'm in now that I'm not busy, I was thinking of maybe apping to this as well. Psychopomp Inquisitor/Saboteur (or Inquisitor-Saboteur with the two Agendas merit).

Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 WATER monster you control (except this card) to Special Summon 1 WATER monster from your hand. The monster Special Summoned by this effect is destroyed if "Raging Eria" is removed from your side of the field.
I think I've got the rule bits all figured out. As far as I can tell, the background doesn't actually work (there's no way to steal another demon's cover?), but I'm still kind of attached to the dichotomy. Her "real" cover is super boring and featureless, but that's also supposed to tie into the essential contradictions about who she is and her reasons for falling.
So anyway, there's that I guess. If it's inappropriate then I'd want to have a radically different character anyway.

"Let's hurry up, Heaven waits for nobody."

Shadow was a Messenger created to record and analyze data. It engaged well with the job, colleagues, and research subjects, receiving favorable marks from most. Repeated assignments ended with the Trumpet's mind drained of excess knowledge. It still gathered all data available. It was unthinkable for an Angel to do otherwise, because Angels don't think. It revised that policy after watching a lady jump head-first from her four-story apartment.

Since her Fall Shadow's chosen a name for herself, trying to live her Cover's life as best she can. Appolon's bounty tempts every part of her.

Demonic Form

-Who did you share part of yourself with after you first Fell?
A paramedic came to talk with me after they picked up the lady who jumped. Her name was Young or something. She was miserable and wanted to know why the lady jumped, so I told her about the asylum and about how Julie died in her sleep, and how I'm a different person than her. Miss Young seemed to like that. Maybe they'll be reborn like Julie was trying for. Then her shift ended and we had coffee with the graveyard crew at my regular.

-Who doesn't know, but suspects you are not human?
I met a guy by a bloody dumpster. He came in behind me and asked me if I liked the weather. Then he asked why I wasn't freaking out. I had to spoof him. That's no angel I've ever heard of.

-Who could give you up to the Angels right now, if they really wanted to?
Katherine Harris is Julie's old BFF. If she called looking for help, I'd have to go or risk breaking Cover. She's a bit worried about Julie. Which is understandable. Maybe they had that psychic friend link back when she was alive? No, that's totally real.

-Who would you trust the truest part of yourself with if you absolutely had to?
There's this guy, Ed, uses the wifi at the coffee shop and makes firewood for a living, and he's a pretty cool. Ed wouldn't panic if I told him, and that's real important.

-Who thinks they have something on you, when all they really have is smoke and mirrors?
That smug poo poo Vince thinks Julie was in porn. He must be face-blind, cause I caught a peak at his laptop. Doesn't even look like her. Also, ew. Someone else needs to slap his poo poo together.

-How did you fall in line with your Agenda?
I knew I was an Inquisitor the first time I heard about it. Guess I always was. I mean, Tempting sounds like a great line of work, but I'm not ready to branch out just yet.

-When did you first make contact with the Apollon Group?
I met my first Appolon goon after a close call with an Angel in a suit. It wasn't after me, they were after it. That takes some big ones. Took a while to get in touch, but they offer good pay for surveillance photos. Apparently some people don't .

-Why do you have the Embeds you do and why is your first Key significant to you?
It all comes to convenience. Being an blur in a city of thousands is so much better than running away. Doing quick and fastidious at the same time is a godsend when living a double life. Most people are more willing to accept 'I was just spacing out' when you're not right next to them. And my Key? I got that for me, because I was tired of hiding spare outfits throughout the city. It made me so happy that I tried to plug it in, and afterwards? It made sense. I like my Cover, and I don't like having it hurt because I jumped a few fences. Y'know what I'm saying? The Descent is about living well.

e4:I lost part of e3 and wasn't done anyway. Anyway, I remembered how Cover-linked Merits and Legend work, so now I'm done. Good luck everyone. :toot:

It's hard to soar with the eagles when you work with Turkeys!!

A.W. Culp Rare Booksellers is something of an institution in Indianapolis. It’s not the largest, certainly, even if you discount bookstores with more mainstream fare. In the exclusive club of rare book dealers, its selection was merely adequate. Its prices, to the extent that sort of person who buys a 13th century illustrated manuscript as a birthday present even notices price, were generally agreed to be a little excessive.

But A.W. Culp did brisk trade — far more than many of its competitors, far more than it probably warranted. There were always patrons browsing its hermetically sealed stacks. It was one of the few places in the city you could find academics interacting with occult researchers interacting with the agents of reclusive billionaire collectors.

They came for Culp — Alexander Culp, a patrician gentleman with kind eyes and a habit of smiling absentmindedly when he was thinking. Culp, whose voice was never raised above a parlor mumble, who wore well-made and immaculately pressed suits of a slightly outdated cut. Culp, a man you couldn’t seem to interest in any subject besides books, but who on that subject would natter on boorishly until even the most dedicated bibliophile would excuse themselves and run for the exit. Culp, whose absentmindedness concealed an unparalleled eye for forgeries, whose help with recently acquired finds was invaluable and freely given. Culp, who sometimes approached a client with solutions to other problems they might be having, sometimes quite major things, easy fixes for which he only asked for things which he could not possibly take, for a signature on the dotted line.

Culp, who was not at all what he appeared.

Alexander Culp professes a great love of literature and admits, with some embarrassment, to being an aspiring author. But in truth he’s only ever once written anything he considers good. It’s a fable, and it goes like this:

Once upon a time there was a thief. The thief worked for a great, inscrutable power, and what he stole was knowledge. His task was to take great works of literature, and alter them, and then return them, without their authors ever knowing. It would have been easier to just tell the writers themselves to write what they needed to write, but the thief knew that wouldn’t work. The theft itself was necessary.

The thief didn’t ask questions about his work. Those questions would not be answered, anyway. But he did, over the course of his long, long tenure, come into contact with a lot of literature. He developed a taste for it, and after many, many years of service, he decided one day that he would like to write something himself.

The thief sat down to write. He set his quill to the paper. He wrote “Once upon a time there was a thief.”

But it was never intended for him to create things, only to steal. And so with those words, the first words that were ever his own, he Fell.

The entity that calls itself Alexander Wolfram Culp hasn’t figured out a good moral to that one, yet.

**-Who did you share part of yourself with after you first Fell?
Oh no one. No one at all. This cover is not... long on friends, so to speak. Even those people with warmth in their heart for him see him as more of a resource than a friend. Reliable, knowledgeable, affable even, always glad to be of use, but more than a little obtuse... If he had a friend I’m not sure he’d know what to do with it.

Alas, we play the parts we’re given, do we not? I’m not about to jeopardize my position by breaking character.

When I have need of companionship I find it in the company of other demons, where it’s easier in many ways, because you don’t have to pretend.

Ah, but I’m no fool though. Lack of pretense is not honesty, at least not with that crowd.

-Who doesn't know, but suspects you are not human?
Several people, I should think. I deal with many diabolists, occult texts being somewhat of a specialty. None of any real power or clued-in-ness, but they’d have the eyes to see the signs. Irrelevant, anyway. Culp is useful to them, and I deliberately cultivate an air of harmlessness. It’s been... oh, gosh, quite some time since I’ve killed, even.

Beyond that... Nathalie. She’s one of my assistants. The sharpest of my assistants. Fluent in Latin and Arameic, if you can believe that. I see her reading the tomes dealing with demonology when she thinks I’m not looking, and of course her mind is a good deal more readable to me than a text in a dead tongue. She’s seen the signs. She’s starting to know what they mean. A situation that I will have to deal with soon, I suppose.

-Who could give you up to the Angels right now, if they really wanted to?
Apallon, although I’m not sure why they would. Again, I work hard at the right mix of indispensable and harmless. Beyond that I keep true info about myself very well guarded. The less anyone has of the complete picture, the less damage betrayal can cause. A regrettable reality, but the one we live in.

-Who would you trust the truest part of yourself with if you absolutely had to?
If I had to... hmm... Nathalie, I suppose. Yes. As I said, that situation is one that will have to work itself out one way or another, soon.

-Who thinks they have something on you, when all they really have is smoke and mirrors?

Hah. Barthus thinks he’s so clever. Oh, sorry. Roland Barthus. Of Barthus Booksellers? Well, he’s another antiquary... quite a good one, actually, although his 12th century vulgate bible is a 17th century forgery and I haven’t the heart to tell him.
Anyway, Barthus is a devil worshiper. He thinks I don’t know. Serves some... Oh, I’m not exactly sure. It’s like a kind of scary book spirit, I think. Prince of something. Not important.

Barthus is woefully misinformed about the way things actually work, but he’s also quite smart and he has just enough information to hurt himself. It’s absurd, but I think he’s actually trying to piece together a ritual now to bind me. Hah! The thought of it. I think I will enjoy seeing him try.

-How did you fall in line with your Agenda?
You have to understand... I don’t hate the God Machine.

To be sure, I don’t like it. I resent the things I was created for, resent the reasons they were necessary. Well, I don’t understand why they were necessary, but I’m sure I would resent it. But hate? The God Machine is both beyond and beneath that kind of sentiment. It would be like taking personal offense at a rainstorm that ruined your day at the beach, to use a rather clumsy metaphor.

I guess you the best way to put it is I am fascinated by the God Machine. The intricacies of it... the scale, the beautiful efficiency with which it works. It’s like an author writing a story about itself writing a story about an author writing a story about himself. A completely closed loop.

Particularly I’d say I’m interested by humanity, its most complicated, most sublime, most fallible component. A lot of the forces that make up the machine are immutable, beyond the action but humanity and humanity alone is permitted to change. Why is that? And what would happen if someone were to direct that change to other ends? What if a meme were to grow out of control, a trend, a song, a... part of speech. A book? What if something caused humanity to move left when the design calls for right? What then the machine?

Forgive me. These are the sorts of questions that a very, very old man amuses himself with as he attempts to pass a very dreary eternity.

-When did you first make contact with the Apollon Group?

Very shortly after the fall, once I’d gotten the lay of the land. I sought them out. Needed allies. A demon without a support structure is as good as dead, and Appollon is the right mix of powerful and uninvolved, just enough to help out without making demands on my time. Their ends are, at worst, orthogonal to my own, so its been a good partnership.

So yes. I am an Appollon Group ally but I am not a part of the Appollon Group. I’m... not a joiner. Besides, big powers draw fire. The only thing more exposed than a demon without a support structure is a demon with a target painted on his back.

-Why do you have the Embeds you do and why is your first Key significant to you?**

Cuckoo’s Egg is the first embed I ever learned... well, that’s probably not the right way to describe it. I don’t know of a time when I didn’t know it. I fell knowing Cuckoo’s Egg, I think. It feels a bit like a power I remember calling on in the bad old days, something taken, something given, balance. It’s incomplete. The Fall broke many things even as it made many others.

In My Pocket and Deep Pockets... well, that’s just practical, isn’t it? Thieves travel light. It’s so much more convenient to have what you need in the moment rather than having to plan ahead and then lug all that... stuff... Anyway, those I learned from Appollon, actually. Took it as payment for a small trifle I acquired for them. Good start to a productive relationship, that.

And Muse... well, I am running a business, aren’t I? It’s easier to make a sale when you make up your customer’s mind for them.

I would like to say a few things that have jumped out at me as I was putting the finishing touches on my character's story. Mainly, the nature of his fall seems a lot more like an exile than a demon. There are two ways to look at this discrepancy, and the truth is probably a combination of the two. First, he genuinely does not remember the specifics of what he did and thought thanks to the techno-arcane fuckery that got triggered when he entered the warehouse. Second is he's in complete denial about his actual desires.

Don't know if anyone cares, but there were thoughts in my brain, and now they're on the the internet.

I can see Malediction and Mr. Bright being bros in that area (or at least tentative "this guy seems like he's more on the level") if SunAndSpring wants to follow up on the First of the Fallen thread. There's an interesting conspiracy B-plot in a demon trying to figure out why and how they were apparently induced to fall, when most other Unchained would see it as basically a good thing.

Bright and I have a lot in common, and I've often wondered if the same person or group is responsible for both our falls. He does good work, and I would happily call him brother. Ilaniel, on the other hand, is a dangerous psychopath. We may have been brothers-in-arms once, but he never understood the purpose behind our task, so all he knows is killing. Not like Mons, who understands the importance of those who fight beside you, and that there are greater things in this world than destruction for it's own sake. Wolfram understands the latter as well, though I'm not sure I understand the why of his obsession. At least he is trying to build something, even if it seems frivolous. Culp is an odd one; he seems content with his life. I don't understand it, but I can't fault him for enjoying what he does.

Oh lord, right you are. If you notice any other mistakes on there let me know. I'll correct that at some point. Probably tomorrow.

Oh, those guys? Interesting lot. Funny story really. But I'll save that for another time.

Culp does some very good work in misdirecting the misguided. Those who wish to pierce the vale, and so on and so forth. He's pleasant enough, and his views on humanity and the God Machine make for interesting conversation.

Gil, is concerning. Like me he was made for destruction. But he still clings to this modus operandi. I fear that he could easily be a danger to himself and others. He seems to be holding himself in check well however.

Wolfram is a fellow man of medicine. Though I find his reasoning and focus to be disturbing. Though his skills in medicine are greater than my own I'd be worried that he'd give me a face lift while removing a splinter.

Ilaniel another Destroyer, however, he fell for what I feel to be the right reasons. It's easy to kill for the wrong reasons but it's a far harder thing to stop killing for the right reasons.

Lastly we have Mr Bright. His skills are in great demand in this city, hell I've passed a few of my patients his way for 'improvements'. I find the act distasteful, but I understand the necessity of it for Soul Pacts.

The Duke of Beer
Excited to be in, here are my little vignettes.

Mr. Culp

An intriguing man, to be sure. I enjoy his bookstore, there are many beautiful things there a man like me ought to own and there are many whispers only one of his persuasion has access to. What is more, he is quite a bit more capable than he lets on; have you seen the things he has 'collected'? Truly a professional.

Mr. Bright

A tortured, but gifted individual. The work he does on Apollon's clients is great, if a little limited in scope. He improves their lives, but does he make them more beautiful? I do not believe so. Perhaps he and I can teach each other a thing or two.

Mr. Ilaniel

I have abandoned the ways of destruction, yet I see beauty in this brethren's work. I, too, would like to weed out the ugliness of the God-Machine, although I would rather not tear down our former kin in such a drastic manner. If I could see the beauty of Man, so can they.

Mr. Malediction

This one. This one is ugly. He bears the scars of the God-Machine's betrayal and he seeks... Vengeance. But not aimed at the God-Machine, no, aimed at the Demons that made him see. He is blind to this world, sees only the ugliness. He is dangerous, as well, but there is a caring streak within him.

Mr. Mons

Mons cares. It is a beautiful thing, this caring. He empathizes with people, wishes to save them, often from themselves. Yet he is more a warrior than I, more a soldier. He is loyal, he is virtuous, he does not enjoy. Perhaps he will see the beauty of the things he cares about. Or perhaps I will learn to see the beauty he finds. Wouldn't that be a nice thing? I believe in outer beauty, yes, but perhaps there is more?

Culp was the first Inquisitor I met once I got on the grid. I was poring over a copy of the Lesser Key of Solomon, based on my belief that there are insights to be found in classical demonology, when the bookseller asked if I knew what I was looking for in what I later realized was Sami. I was making myself much too obvious, and I hope he realizes he's doing the same. He introduced me to enough co-Agendists that he'd be a major liability if compromised, and I do love that bookshop.

I worked with Dr. Wolfram in a professional capacity before we established the Ring. Cosmetic improvements to a future Cover aren't normally my area, but i've received requests when the seller is trying to close the deal on a specific pact, and no one else loves their work like he does. Something about projecting a constructed image of beauty onto an unsatisfactory current-self fascinates me, although i'm not sure he sees it with my academic detachment.

Malediction wants to return to a state of grace. I don't think i'm there yet. But we're questioners, and that's reason to stick together. I don't know how Apollon feels about my associating with a demon who's not in their pocket, but it makes perfect sense for Ibro to work with Gil to mutual benefit- I can always count on a witness for an alibi. His opinion has weight with me.

I know that Mons has been in the field much longer than I have, that Afghan veteran can't be his first cover- might have been there as a Briton the first time around too though. Taken in a few of his patients, not always for Apollon, one's in my file as an excuse for the new me to carry a gun. I think his teleportation is as versatile as mine, that's a factor to remember. Not quite an antinomian, but he's a better guardian than I was from a human's point of view. I wonder if he wants to be one of their angels?

I don't really get Ilaniel. I think he and Mons betrayed God for similar reasons (force of habit, excuse me), but he was loyal so much longer, and he's still on the warpath. It can't have been a programming error or incorrect classification. Was his problem with the methodology of the destruction? The choice of target? Possibly he thought he knew a better way to kill than he was being ordered. Of course i'm glad he's not on the side of the angels, i'm just saying, I Fell because I was doing my job.

Anonymous 4 - I Saw a Swete Semly Syght

After writing all of this, I realized that my character is a terrorist against the God Machine. This is going to be fun and weird and I really hope he doesn't die.

Mr. Bright is weak. He's unwilling to do the necessary, and it cost him his sanity. He was, for so long, another cog in the God-Machine, and now he seems content being a cog in another machine. It's hard to trust someone with so many questions and so little ambition. I even had trouble getting him to help me kill an an angel trying to kill him.

Mons is an angel that left for all the wrong reasons but shares all the same goals. He's kind---not just, but kind, and I'm certain it will get him killed one day. I'm in this to remove every last brick from the wall; he's just here to see the people living on the other side see the light of day. He rescues the humans while I kill the angels.

Dr. Wolfram has lost his way, and his pure purpose. He was meant for destruction, and he's turned his power to artwork. I don't see a fundamental problem with it, but his medium is strange and his methods stranger. There must be a stronger, more driven construct hidden away by the facade he wears, and I wish I could bring it forth. Then we first met, I hoped it would be easy to sway him back into his real ways, but he's stood by watching me fight before.

Culp always seems to know the truth. He's always two steps ahead, which is more than useful, but he seeks to understand something that need only be destroyed. He can take the God Machine apart as it lays destroyed, picking through the still machinery. Until then, though, I'll rely on him for information, fully aware he'll treat me like a loaded gun. It's an arrangement that's worked for both of us on more than one occasion.

I was there the night Gil was unmade. It was happenstance, really---I was going to slay his partner that night, but something happened in that warehouse. Something involving Proterius, a high-ranking demon of the Apollon Group. I've never met her myself, but I knew enough to recognize her when I saw her. I vanished when they died, however, and I don't think I'll ever tell Malediction; he's too valuable a warrior to help him find the road back. But I must be careful, because clever is as comfortable to him as it is uncomfortable to me and I would rather not be found out.

I'm ok with the idea myself, but it's his choice. Also note that I won't allow Player vs Player in any serious context: if you want to roll to see who can hold their liquor better or something silly, go ahead. But the second you guys draw guns and start trying to duel, I'll dash those ideas on the metaphorical rocks. But I trust you guys know the rules by now.

Oh my. I'm not quite sure I can imagine a scenario where Malediction discovers that truth and doesn't try to rip Ilaniel's face off. It's definitely possible that he was the demon Malediction was hunting when he fell, but there should be an explanation that means Ilaniel wasn't directly responsible if we want to keep this party together. I trust player-on-player dramatic roughhousing is kosher.

Also, while I find the idea of his cover identity actually being a mage amusing, it represents some serious difficulties for maintaining it. I'm expecting to run into trouble because he doesn't really know anything about the man, but I was thinking like "my mother is coming to visit" and not "hey guys, for some reason I can't cast any spells except for this one Forces rote."

It's hard to soar with the eagles when you work with Turkeys!!

Mons -- The old soldier. I sympathize with him in some ways... my own mission before the Fall had me on earth for many years, and I know what its like to remember fondly people and things which no longer are. I suspect he let himself become rather more attached than I ever have, though. His preoccupation with the welfare of individual humans is rather... unseemly. I have tried to explain how it blinds him to the greater potential, but I don't think he really listens.

Dr. Wolfram -- I rather like Dr. Wolfram, he's a fellow aesthete. Though, of course, we are predilicted toward different arts. Last summer I gave him an excellent 16th century reproduction of the Codex Gigas... it wasn't really saleable and I know he likes the marginalia. I'd rather a book go to someone who will appreciate it than some of the status-seeking clowns who come through the shop.

Mr. Bright -- What a fascinating case. This First of the Fallen... group, individual, whatever. To forcibly cut an Angel off from the source, not to mention to orchestrate events to lead him into the trap in the first place, they would have to have exquisite understanding of how the God Machine works. And yet I can find no mention of them anywhere, and I have looked... Needless to say, I am monitoring his research closely. I'll give him what aid I can, so long as I can do it without exposing myself too much.

Illaniel -- He doesn't realize it, but of all of us Illaniel was changed the least from his fall. He's still exactly the same singleminded engine of destruction the God Machine created him to be. Really, the only thing that's different is his target. He's dreadfully unsubtle, and he's going to get himself killed one of these mornings. Until then, unsubtle is good. Unsubtle draws fire. And I'll admit, there have been times where his brand of carnage was useful, obstacles I needed cleared that I couldn't dirty my hands with. All it required was a little bit of information at the right time, a target made clear, and then standing back and watching the fireworks.

Malediction -- Another unsubtle one, and a bit too clever to be useful to me at the same time. Still, if I'm being honest I find his continued struggles to adjust to mortal life endlessly entertaining. So... there's that. There's also his goal... Oh, I don't know if he realizes it but its obvious he's an Integrator. You can tell from the question he asks, and the words he uses to describe the time before his fall. Me, I don't think its possible to go back, and I wouldn't choose it if I could. But there's probably something to be learned in the attempt... I should be very interested to see him try it.

Fair enough on both counts. What about something like:

I was there the night Gil was unmade. It was happenstance, really---I was going to slay his partner that night, but something happened in that warehouse. Something involving Proterius, a high-ranking demon of the Apollon Group. I've never met her myself, but I knew enough to recognize her when I saw her. ----

On the topic if PvP, Integrators seem to encourage it; their Beat is "Take a Beat when the character puts the ring at risk or makes the ring vocally or actively suspicious of his motives." That sounds like a recipe for tension between the party. I'm not interested in PvP, but it seems like if you get six demons in a room and one of them seems like it's doing shady poo poo that's going to kill the other five, those other five might react poorly. To that end, I would feel more comfortable if there was an in-character reason to explain why the party wouldn't kill/abandon Malediction after Malediction gets them almost dead. Maybe some sort of directive from the Apollon Group: "If you're a member of the Apollon Group and you slay a member of the Apollon Group, you're fired and we're going to try to kill you."

Yeah that'll work great. As for the other point, I think there's a fine line between putting at risk and almost getting killed. And I'll be sure to do my best to arouse suspicion by doing things that aren't actually selling the group out to the god-machine.

I'm gonna make this intro a bit freeform, so I can see exactly how you guys handle things. We'll be using orokos.com to roll dice. Make an account and link the roll to your post. For WoD, you'll be using d10's, and will want to set Orokos to detect if you hit 8, 9, or 10, with re-rolls on 10. So, you want to type Xd10o10h8, with X being your dice pool.

Post format is
