The invasion of the USSR had begun: the crew of the U-37 initially had little to say but after some incredible successes, it seemed like victory was almost in the grasp of the german army. If only they could capture Moscow. The repairs on U-37 had taken some time but at least everyone got a good deal of downtime and the crew returned rested and recuperated, although it was clear that some of the crew had hit the bottle hard the day before. Cythereal didn't know if he was glad to be out in the sea again or not.

This time, U-37 would work in conjunction with other u-boats in order to hunt the convoys in the Atlantic. U-37 would be part of Wolfpack Goeben: hopefully this would provide a lot more targets than had previously been available: Cythereal was optimistic. The trip through the Bay of Biscay and out into the larger Atlantic was uneventful, although the crew kept busy in their own way.

The first week and a half within the patrol zone were uneventful and Cythereal did not receive a single transmission from the rest of the wolfpack. For all that talk about casting a wider net and being able to more effectively engage convoys, nothing had materialised yet.

Another week passed with the crew getting more and more bored and restless, when finally another u-boat within the wolfpack finally reported that a convoy had been spotted. All of the wolfpack members had been ordered to converge and soon U-37 was heading towards the contact at flank speed.

It was night by the time the intercept was made and fortunately the escorts seemed to be busy with the other members of the wolfpack. Keksen and Last Trasmission called the targets: the 8.3k ton Chilore, the 6.9k ton Empire Comet, the 4.5k ton Cape Rodney, but the best jewel of all was the 15k ton tanker Svend Foyn.

The tanker was too good to pass: coming in at medium range submerged, firing three eels at the Svend Foyn and a single G7a at the Cape Rodney, hoping that the smaller ship would go down within only a single torpedo. Two of the torpedoes aimed at the tanker missed completely, but the last torpedo struck the large tanker right in the midsection, severely slowing down the 15k ton ship. On the other hand, the torpedo aimed at the Cape Rodney missed as well.

Fortunately, the escorts were too busy dealing with the other members of the wolfpack to spot the U-37. The Svend Foyn was far too wounded to keep up with the rest of the convoy, but a destroyer had detached from the convoy in order to escort the tanker.

Again coming in at medium range, Cythereal fired another two torpedoes at the tanker, hoping to make sure that it would go down quickly. Both torpedoes were on target on the slow, damaged tanker and with two hits on the fore part of the ship, the tanker was soon sinking. The largest tanker that the crew of the U-37 had yet seen was soon heading towards the bottom of the Atlantic.

Unfortunately, with a dedicated escort assigned to the Svend Foyn, the escorting destroyer was quick to find the U-37 and the hell of depth charges was once again felt. The clutch of depth charges was remarkably accurate and the ship was rocking extremely violently, sending the crew flying. The hull groaned under the impacts and suddenly Skanky Burns reported that the fuel tanks were losing pressure.

Cythereal immediately ordered the u-boat to exceed test depth: with a fuel trail giving their position away, they couldn't afford to stay anywhere near the surface. It wasn't enough and soon ASDIC was able to pin-point the position of the u-boat and another clutch of depth charges were soon on their way. This time, the depth charges were even more accurate.

Extensive flooding was reported in the front of the ship: some of the crew had been injured as well and soon A White Guy was on his way to assist. Skanky Burns was unable to stop the flooding and a lot more water entered the boat before it was completely contained.

Soon the destroyer was coming in for another round and although the depth charges this time weren't as accurate as before, they still managed to damage the boat, although only the deck gun was severely damaged.

The attacks were relentless, however, and this time it was Skanky Burns that was injured. Having dealt with the injuries with the crew in the forward torpedo room, A White Guy was quick to patch up the Chief Engineer and his injuries weren't serious enough to prevent him from working.

The next round of depth charges came soon after the last one, with U-37 rocking due to the proximity of the explosions. A sudden explosion struck A White Guy while he was returning back fore to help with the wounded, knocking him heavily to the floor: before anyone could help, the doctor was dead. Along with him, several other crewmembers had been seriously injured by the explosion.

Another round and yet more explosions: the situation seemed to become hopeless. Fortunately, the latest round didn't damage anything, but the destroyer was not giving up. This time, Skanky Burns reported an acid leak in the batteries as well as damage to Diesel Engine 1.

There was a sudden moment of quiet: the ASDIC had finally stopped sounding and even the sound of the destroyer engines was beginning to fade. Had they managed to escape? A few hours later proved that the answer to that question was 'yes'. Finally, U-37 arose from the depths, returning to the surface damaged, but alive. Skanky Burns reported that everything could be fixed except for the fuel leak: the u-boat would have to abort and return home lest they remain stranded in the Atlantic. Cythereal, unhappy at the outcome, set a course for home.

Fortunately the trip back was uneventful, although without the help of a doctor, some of the crew succumbed to their wounds. Cythereal was almost getting flash-backs to some of his first few patrols and the horrible toll that they had taken...

The downtime had been grim: the Germans had stopped their advance within Russia as one of the worst winters in many years had blunted the attack. It was grim for the crew as well, since another doctor had been necessary. Cythereal didn't know how they had convinced anyone to come aboard. The new doctor was one sniper4625, although he liked to call himself Doktor Helmut von Kriegerspitz: in other words, a madman. The only bright thing was the promotion of Cythereal to KorvettenKapitan. He didn't know who had pushed the promotion, however.

U-37 was destined for the Atlantic once again: not in a wolf-pack, but hopefully that would not spoil the hunt. It had been more than two years since U-37 had its first patrol and although Cythereal still wanted to serve the Fatherland, he was starting to wary, especially with the countless deaths that he had experienced during the trips.

The trip out to the patrol zone was uneventful, with only a few practice dives to get rid of the boredom. The crew was listless and there was some grumbling, especially among the veterans that had been there since the very first patrol.

It was Last Transmission that first spotted the convoy: U-37 had just stumbled into the convoy and quickly Cythereal sent a transmission reporting the location of it.

It was night by the time that U-37 was in position and quickly Keksen and Last Transmission called out the targets: the 5.2k ton Robert E. Lee, the 2k ton Sea Glory, the 5.2k ton J.D. Larrinaga and the 12.3k ton Sultan Star.

Cythereal had a strange compulsion to strike the Robert E. Lee, making a calculation to fire two eels at it. The other target would be the 12.3k ton Sultan Star. One torpedo aimed at the Robert E. Lee missed, but the other was a beautiful hit and soon the freighter was sinking beneath the waves. Both eels aimed at the Sultan Star hit as well, severely damaging the freighter but not causing it to sink.

Fortunately, no escorts seemed to spot U-37 and the escape was easy: hopefully the patrol would continue this way. After making some distance and rounding again, U-37 shadowed the stricken freighter: it was obvious that the Sultan Star was heavily damaged, but Cythereal needed to confirm the kill. Coming again at medium range submerged, it was still night by the time that the u-boat made its second attack. The freighter had dropped off the convoy: one destroyer, however, had detached from the convoy in order to protect the large freighter.

Cythereal fired two torpedoes: one proved to be a dud, but the other hit true and soon the 12.3k ton freighter was sinking: a good haul so far. Even though a destroyer had detached from the convoy in order to escort the Sultan Star, it was unable to detect the u-boat and soon Cythereal was able to surface once again: unfortunately the convoy now appeared too far away to catch once again and thus the Kaleun was forced to continue on his patrol. A good patrol so far, however.

A week passed without anything being spotted, with Keksen having several of his disgusting cocktails 'for good luck'. This seemed to pay out, as BdU reported the position of another convoy, which U-37 was ordered to intercept. Calculating the route, Cythereal could see that it was possible to make it and therefore soon brought the boat under way.

As night descended, the two Watch Officers finally spotted the convoy, calling out targets: the 5k ton Sheaf Mead, the 5k ton Alfred Jones, the 4.1k ton Rio Claro and the 4.7k ton Tuva. Small fry, but they would do.

Deciding to fire two torpedoes at each of the 5k ton freighters, Cythereal crept in at medium range, submerged, quickly forming a firing calculation on both ships and firing the allocated torpedoes. One torpedo aimed at each freighter missed, but the other two hit their respective ships and soon both the Sheaf Mead and the Alfred Jones were sinking. At least the torpedoes seemed to be more effective this time around.

This time, however, escaping would not be as easy: a destroyer could soon be heard steaming right towards the location of U-37: Cythereal ordered the boat to go deeper, but it was too late. As depth charges rocked the ship, the only damage seemed to be light injuries to the forward torpedo room crew: sniper4625 was immediately on the case.

Cythereal ordered the u-boat still yet deeper, but it was to no avail: another pass and another clutch of depth charges, this time much more accurately deployed than the last. Shouts of 'extensive flooding in the diesel room!' could be heard and soon Skanky Burns was running to a fro, attempting to stop the leaks. Engine 1 had also been damaged, as well as the 3.7cm flak cannon up top, although no one was aware of that.

Fortunately, Skanky Burns was able to stop the flooding before it extended too far. Unfortunately, the destroyer had not relented on its hunt and soon was dropping even more explosives from its stern. The explosives rocked the ship and an alarmed Skanky Burns reported that the fuel tanks had been hit again.

Cythereal made a snap decision: they would go deeper, exceeding test depth in order to avoid more explosions. With a leaking fuel tank, they could not afford to take any chances. The destroyer passed over U-37 once again, but this time the depth charges had been set too shallow: the subsequent explosions were far off. This continued for about an hour until the destroyer gave up, returning to protect the convoy.

Skanky Burns had good news and bad news: the good news was that Diesel 1 had been fixed. The bad news was that both the fuel leak and the 3.7cm gun were un-repairable. Once again, U-37 would be forced back lest it became stranded.

Fortunately the trip back proved to be uneventful, but one strange event occurred as U-37 arrived at St. Nazaire: an Admiral was there, ready to present the Knight's Cross to Cythereal.

It had been a long break but finally the crew was back into the war. The Knight's Cross and the lack of Doctor Deaths had lifted the morale of the crew: at least there was that to work with. The german army in the USSR had been stopped, but it was clear that another offensive would begin soon, as soon the mud was gone. Hopefully the summer would showcase the final, crushing victory that Germany needed. Cythereal, following his Knight's Cross, had asked for him and his crew to be transferred to a type IXB boat, but BdU had said no: they would remain on the U-37 for the time being.

Following the declaration of war between Germany and the USA, many u-boats had been sent to the North American coast, where many Kaleuns spoke of easy pickings. Unfortunately, U-37 had been assigned to the Atlantic once again. Hopefully the convoys would be fruitful this time. Unfortunately, the allies were becoming better and better at finding and destroying u-boats: many had been lost recently. Were the good times at an end?

The answer to that question materialized soon after U-37 left port: only a few hours into the journey, after leaving their escorts behind, U-37 was attacked by an allied airplane, spotted by Keksen. The cry of alarm ringed throughout the boat. Unfortunately, it was too late. The plane swooped down and released its clutch of bombs. Crew immediately manned the AA guns, but neither gun managed to hit the Catalina. The 3.7 gun and the crewman manning it were damaged, while on the bridge itself, Skanky Burns was also hit.

As the deck was finally cleared, U-37 slipped below the waves, finally safe. After an hour, the u-boat finally surfaced. All in all, the damage could have been a lot worse. Unfortunately, the 3.7 cm gun was beyond repair. Both Skanky Burns and the hit crewman had experienced only slight injuries and soon both were back in duty.

It wasn't long into the patrol before BdU contacted U-37: a convoy had been spotted due north of their position and soon Cythereal got the boat into action. It was still day by the time that U-37 intercepted the convoy and thus Cythereal decided to wait until night before making the attack.

The targets spotted by Keksen and Last Transmission were the 6k ton tanker Wallfield, the 5.3k ton freighter Bronte, the 5k ton tanker Congonian and the 2.2k ton freighter Caribou. Cythereal elected to do a submerged long range attack: the allied were too good nowadays to risk getting close. After the calculations were made, two eels were fired against the Wallfield and two at the Bronte. Three of the torpedoes were misses, but one of the torpedoes aimed at the Bronte hit the poo poo in the midriff, causing it to quickly sink.

Cythereal quickly dived, but it wasn't enough and soon the destroyers were on the hunt, the ASDIC pinging against the hull of the u-boat. The depth charges were accurate, rocking the ship. Damage reports were heard throughout: the aft torpedo room had been damaged, along with cracking of the hull and extensive flooding: fortunately, this was stopped by Skanky Burns before too much water was taken in.

The destroyer came around for another pass: it was obvious that it would not give up so easily. This time the depth charges were not as accurate, but still close enough to crack the hull further: if they were ever going to survive this, U-37 would need quite some time in the docks. Deciding that they had to evade, Cythereal ordered the ship to exceed test depth, causing the hull to creak even further.

This was not enough to shake off the destroyer and an incredibly accurate brace of depth charges exploded all around the U-boat. The allies had clearly set their depth correctly. The explosion rocked the hull of the ship, straining it to breaking point. Cythereal was also hit, although fortunately only lightly. The situation was ominous and it was clear that going any deeper could crush the heavily damaged hull.

It was clear that the destroyer that was hunting U-37 was manned by an elite crew: another pass and the depth charges were on target once again. A heavy hit to the diesel room took out engine 2, along with penetrating the fuel tank and causing extensive flooding: this time, Skanky Burns was unable to control the flooding and the ship was taking a large amount of water.

With a leaking fuel tank, things looked grim: it would be easy for the destroyer to detect U-37 now. Fortunately, the next few depth charges were not so well placed, but it was clear that this was only a temporary respite.

Or was it? Strangely, the explosions seemed to be going further off and soon, the entire U-boat was quiet. Had they survived?
A few hours passed. Skanky Burns was busy repairing: everything could be repaired except for the diesel engine. A few hours more, and the boat surfaced: Skanky was also able to fix the 2 cm gun and the water was quickly pumped out by the bilge pumps.

With only one diesel functioning, however, U-37 was forced to abandon the patrol and head for home.

As the u-boat entered the Bay of Biscay on its way back, a dreaded sight awaited it. Spotted by Last Transmission, another airplane was coming down to attack the u-boat. Fortunately this time the u-boat was able to dive before the plane had a chance to drop its bombs. Waiting for the horizon to be clear, Cythereal surfaced a few hours later.

It was only a matter of hours before another plane was spotted, this time by Keksen. The allied air cover over the Bay of Biscay was becoming as thick as flies. The plane had been spotted too late and soon it was dropping bombs near the u-boat, damaging the batteries, doing extensive damage to the hull: within the ship, both Skanky Burns and sniper4625 were heavily injured, along with several casualties within the crew.

The flak gun yet again did little, but soon U-37 was able to slip underneath the waves, to safety. A few hours passed before Cythereal ordered the boat to surface. With its only remaining engine, U-37 did all the best to finally reach its home: both Skanky Burns and sniper4625 were in critical condition, but alive.
