Brushing slowly wears down the pebble, producing a smoother surface, similar to how you burnish a hairy scrotum to get that smooth shine. A smoother surface means less friction.

The stone is sliding forward, so less friction means less energy lost and a harder impact with other rocks.

The stone is also rotating as it slides, so less friction means less 'grip' for the rotation to cause the stone's path to curve. Imagine a Japanese guy doing the helicopter on a gonzo porno, it's the same thing.

So if you want the stone to slow down and curve ("curl") in the direction it's rotating, don't brush. Once you're happy with its path and speed, brush like crazy to keep it going straight and fast.
