So I'm sitting here watching Highly Questionable interview Antonio Cromartie, and they're asking him about the time he freaked out at the Chargers coaching staff when they benched one of his buddies and when he found out about Rex Ryan's tattoo preferences and think we need a thread for interviews and other things that humanize these dudes a bit.

It's one of the more interesting parts of going to / winning a Superbowl that builds up to / from media day, it gives people an opportunity to focus a bit on dudes besides quarterbacks or those one or two other guys that get all the coverage (and it's where those hooks get into guys who end up as talking heads ). I know tons of people never turn on ESPN or catch interesting human interest stories about dudes outside their own team, so stop shaking your fists at that darned media and post some good loving interviews.

Posting a few from Highly Questionable that I think are pretty interesting, because inexplicably, Dan LeBetard manages to be a pretty good interviewer:

Kassim Osgood on wedge busting and the most insane story about a Jaguars cheerleader you've ever heard:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYg1XzUzIlM

Peanut Tillman on his nickname and getting put in his place by his parents:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sqd0NvWCzJI

Wes Welker on Brady's golden throne and a very special gameball for Larry Izzo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_4H-GmhTH0

Eric LeGrand on his injuries:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx7yKWPk01A

So yeah, go nuts. NFL players, college players, coaches, whatever.

I've posted this a couple of times, but this seems like as good a thread as any to post it in again. This is Philip Rivers after San Diego's win over Denver earlier this season. It really illustrates how genuine he is about loving the game and just being a generally likeable and cool dude.

Literally the only reason Broncos fans hate Rivers is because of a spat he had with a player no longer on the team over seven seasons ago.

Here's the story behind Alfred Morris' "Home Run" TD celebration: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2012/10/04/alfred-morris-and-his-home-run-celebrations/

quote:

During OTAs in the spring, Alfred Morris ran into some Little Leaguers from York and Lee Counties, who were staying in the same hotel as the Redskins for an All-Star tournament.

“I hung out with them, swam with them. I ate cupcakes with them,” the running back said, as he held up the cupcake he was eating while we were chatting (the man loves his cupcakes).

“The following day I went and watched the game and they said I needed to do a celebration for them,” Morris continued. “So I said, ‘Okay, I’ll hit a home run for ya’ll.’”

When he scored his first touchdown in the preseason against the Colts, he did just that. After crossing the goal line, Morris swung an imaginary bat, shielded his eyes and watched his “ball” leave the stadium.

Now you're just some QB that I used to know
Le Batard actually almost always has awesome interviews simply because its his stance that if you want to get the standard stuff, there are a thousand other reporters who are asking those questions and they are giving the same answers every time. He always refuses to ask them anything about what they are famous for and instead tries to get honest answers about rumors and funny stories.

Jerome Simpson is a journeyman wide receiver currently for the Vikings, formerly of the Bengals, who you may remember from the time he did a front flip over a guy to get a touchdown for that team. He's also weird/hilarious as hell.

Another vote for LeBatard. His interviews do so much to humanize players, especially compared to the pre-game horseshit personal interest stories that fall back on schmaltzy music and soft lighting.

I share these videos when I hear folks talking about athletes as privileged or as "thugs."

Tamba Hali talks about escaping Liberia and transitioning into America.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKChBo_ycC8

Kyle Turley on concussions driving him into depression and thoughts of suicide.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xKfrHzb9cs

Teddy Bridgewater talking about living in poverty and supporting his mom while she dealt with breast cancer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaCmCXBNpJE

Also looking forward to seeing Bomani do some more solo interviews. Seems like he's picking up the craft of having a deeply personal conversation within the constraints of time and ESPN's rules.
