Wow, up to 15 Companions/officers so far and there's more to go. So, poll time: Does Snake: A - Try and keep everyone happy and cooperating so he has as many specialists and trainers as possible. B - Say 'gently caress it, I'm not good with people' and kick out the redundant troublemakers. C - Some clever goony idea that someone shall suggest. Start sending off the troublemakers to do kingship missions right away, of course make it so Snake is sending out people to make sure his newest merc army is the most kick rear end one around, then when they get back be all "Oh poo poo sorry dude, we forgot to add you to the payroll or something. So, like, you aren't part of us now bye."

Obviously Snake would try and keep them all in his band, as he is only discriminatory towards non-soldiers. If they fight with him, they're okay by him. A Veloxyll fucked around with this message at 01:50 on Feb 22, 2014 |

B. Why? well... So far as I know, there are 16 vanilla companions. And of those you can get 8 at a time with no conflicts. Beyond that, each companion likes one other person. If you get the right people you can balance out the ones that dislike a person with the ones that like them and get a net ~75 morale. Well above the minimum for desertion. Just don't start losing too often and you can have a good amount of people following you. This takes a lot of work to get going though, and not only do you have to recruit the right people, you have to do it in the right order. So it is possible, but a right pain in the rear end to do. So, I would say get rid of the spares.

Floris seems to add a plethora of new companions but I'm not counting. Morale is never below 90/100 for the party and there have been few desertions so far because people are sissy pansies who don't like their feelings hurt but like to be employed. A couple firings occurred due to legitimate grievances. We may have a paranoid schizophrenic w/ hallucinatory tendencies in the party. This is gonna be a fun narrative to pull out of my rear end. It may be a couple days before the next update since I've got about a thousand screen caps to throw in the grinder and turn into narrative. Snake enters a bar while his soldiers take a quick rest and his officers make fast trades to lighten their load of loot before weighing it down with provisions. An extremely PO-d appearing blonde sits at the bar, her horn of mead clenched in a shaking fist as she stares ahead of her. Snake takes a seat near, but not next to her, and signals the barkeep for an ale. What did that horn do to deserve such a grip? Eh? You keep that up any longer and you'll be dealing with splinters. Hmph. What's it to you, stranger? Just looking after my fellow patrons of fine drink. Care to say what's bothering you? Not particularly. It's a long story that I don't care to tell to a stranger. Barkeep, another mead for this lady. Put it on my tab, name's Snake. There, now we're not strangers for my part. Fair enough. Matheld is my given name. Shield-maiden to my clan, both daughter and wife of Thanes. From the far north where these so-called 'Nords' hailed from before they lost their way. There is much honor in such a heritage. Aye. Unfortunately, my husband was one of the first to succumb to a plague that struck our Jarl's lands. As our children had all died, however honorably, there was no heir. My love proclaimed me heir to all his lands and properties before he passed. Unfortunately this was not witnessed to his kin. Were it an oath amongst men it would have been enough, but as I am a woman a man's word was needed. There were enough manservants to witness this oath, but my brother in law padded enough hands with coin to make it for naught. So, a man of little worth came to claim the holdings of a great man. Surely, you could not have stood for such an offense? Nay. I would have left the false claimant's head cleft in twain were it left to me. Laws being what they were, the fight would have been me against the entire hold. So I left right there with nothing to my name but the coin in my purse and the blade at my hip. I was raised never to flee from battle, but this would have been slaughter. There is never shame in seeking a better position from which to attack. Aye, such was my thinking. I sought to travel to this war-ridden land and learn the ways of proper battle, rather than small raids. I shall learn what I must to muster a force sufficient to challenge my husband's brother, and then I shall reclaim what is rightfully mine. An admirable goal, to be sure. As it should be. Hmph. I've been absorbed in these thoughts of my home long enough, but who are you to be so concerned? A fellow warrior if you will, who hails from a faraway land and quickly tires of this realm's dishonesty. I see my ancestors brought Loki with them then. A warrior you may be but even the two of us do not make a proper fighting force. Boss, all's ready to go when you are. There's a fresh trail to follow if you hurry! With you in a minute, Borcha. Hmm...your man? As much as any man can claim possession of his comrades. But he addressed you as does a leader? Most among us do, as any group of soldiers needs guidance. I prefer to see myself as the linchpin of a greater machine than myself. Boss then, or Snake? They are largely interchangeable, Matheld. Well then, Snake. I would be pleased to serve in your shield wall for a time, if you have to room to accommodate me...as long as you don't expect me to cook or launder, all should be well. Great. We're ready to leave, see you at the gates. Sometimes you'll come across huge, somewhat organized groups of outlaws. Engage at your own risk. They are divided into several smaller groups but will aid each other if one comes to a fight. Be VERY careful in herding one away for the kill or you will be seeing what it's like to fight much, much greater numbers. Get to battle lines, dammit! Good thing about charging groups is that they're easy to shoot on the way. As our infantry have missiles same as the archers, the enemy is well softened before charging and tend to hang back before facing our shield wall. Everyone charges and has good times hunting them down. Chippity-chop. Ay, Snake! Fantastic fight! Eh, what makes this one so special? Lady Matheld, that's who! She sings her people's battle songs without fear as we brace against the enemy. It is beautiful, is it not? Can't say that I notice, too busy directing the fight. Truly though, she is a treasure. To be frank I normally prefer coy, reserved women. Matheld however, now that's a heart encased in a glacier I'll look forward to thawing. Well...have fun with that, I guess? Nizar trots off just as Matheld moves to take a breather next to Snake. Now that was a magnificent fight, Snake. Really? How so? They all seem to blend together to me, afterwards. Nizar! His taunts, I could hardly fight for laughing. The sight of our opponents, their victuals, their scent, he took it all at a moment's notice and wove it into a quatrain of insults. It was magnificent! Of course I prefer a good epic warrior saga, but credit where it is due. She jogs off to help gather the loot. ...the gently caress is the deal with poetry? Boss, you see this land here about the high steppe? Not much else to see, Borcha. Ha! This is true. I learned the value and taming of horseflesh in these lands. There is little else to do hereabouts. The Khergits, my people, have always claimed this land and none have ever claimed it for long otherwise. Only we know how to tame this land. Maybe your horse archers never allowed for the chance that someone would? Oh, laugh if you will. The old emperors tried to rule over us, but that didn't last long at all. Their grasping at our lands bankrupted them quicker than any other so-called 'barbarians'. My ma told me I come from a line of such chieftains that drove them out, but that doesn't mean much. You can't inherit a claim? What's to inherit? Bloodlines have established their holds ever since we came over the mountains. Whatever I am to have, I must take on my own. You need not fight for such a claim on your own, Borcha. Aye? Will you help me claim my own hold, Boss? In time perhaps, but as a part of a greater whole rather than your own little kingdom, or even a fiefdom. I'd like to see how you manage such a thing. Stick with us, and it may happen sooner than you'd believe. After another circle around the Nord Coast and a few minor scuffles barely sufficient to pay troop salaries, Snake and company sit for a breather at a local inn. I really don't understand why we can't find a simple outlaw hideout. Chalk it up to bad luck. May as well. We've been up and down the coast and not a speck of a trail to be found. Not my fault. Nothing to follow. Ugh. Snake faceplants into the bar next to his plate of bacon-wrapped, garlic-stuffed dates. An unknown hand picks one up and shoves it in his mouth. He sees it coming and sees no signs of poisoning, so he lets it pass. Looks like you've had a rough time of it, Laddie. Have a drink on me. Barkeep! Two of whatever he's having. Not often that a lady buys me a drink. Lady? Pfff. Just Katrin. I'm a woman, not a primped hussy waving her inexperienced behind at the nearest squire. Suffice that I've seen that look you have about you before, and don't mind helping uplift your spirits. I really miss Scotch. Thanks for that. Name's Snake. Oh, I know. There are few in these parts who don't. Oh precious anonymity, we barely knew ye. What she said. We're famous! Drinks for everyone! I'll be heading upstairs then. You are SO boring! What's the trouble then? Your troupe never lost a fight from what I heard. Firstly, yes. Secondly, we need to find them to fight them to win the fight to then be able to celebrate. Not my fault! No one accused you of anything! We find half our battles thanks to you spotting them! Well...it's a matter of pride. Bastards are good at hiding, is all. Fancy. Drinks for you all, then! A great big goddamn uproar sounds from the general direction of the soldiers. I hope you know what you just got yourself into. Doesn't matter. Been earning my keep through trade over the years. Mostly been breaking even, but with the roads so clear of outlaws these past few weeks I was able to complete a trade free of guards. Made a hefty profit. I figure your group is to thank for my recent success, so a few drinks are owed, as far as I'm concerned. Our thanks then. The soldiers haven't had this kind of courtesy before. Ought to do them good. So it's true then, eh? You're soldiers, not manhunters or slavers or that sort? More of a mercenary company. We occasionally rescue some slavers from the outlaw bands we take down, and they serve as cavalry. It's a nice change of pace to be able to ransom prisoners rather than leave bodies to rot. Aye, I know it. Spend most of my early years following nobles in the wars, selling supplies and such. Seen more than my share of the bloodshed that goes along with it. Lost two of my own sons to war. One to battle, the other to the pox. I am truly sorry to hear that. I've never had children myself, can't imagine what that's like. Don't worry about it. It's come, gone, and dealt with. I hate war, but it's all I know how to work with. I'm the same way, though from the battle side of things than logistics as it were. Why do you still fight, then? Hmm. It's what I'm good at. An easy claim to make. So many are skilled killers. Katrin, I don't exaggerate when I say that I've spend the majority of my life fighting some war or another. It was a rare war that I ever really believed in. Now I just look to find a war worth fighting. If you find your war, maybe I can help you keep your men supplied, eh? Oh, I'm quite sure I've found my war. There are just so many pieces to put into place before we're ready for it. Shall I consider myself hired, then? It's less of a job and more of a family, but yeah, sure. Blasphemaster fucked around with this message at 15:52 on Mar 11, 2014 |
