Reposting this somewhere that people might appreciate it:

SPOTLIGHT ON: NIKITA SCHERBAK (Draft Rank: 24 among North American Skaters)

Nikita Scherbak is a beaut and a shining star on a very bad Saskatoon Blades team. After being "stolen" from a Moscow junior team at the start of the year, Scherbak has put up 24 goals and 32 assists for the Blades, putting him 8th overall in points across the league. Technically a rookie despite being 18, Scherbak has put up about 20 more points than the next leading rookie scorer, Julius Honka, whose name is stupid and is also a dumb guy who sucks.

Beginning his WHL career as the guy in your beer league who won't get off the ice or backcheck, Scherbak has matured into a fine 1.75-way player who only occasionally takes 3-minute shifts. He has soft, buttery hands, skates faster than 99% of the league and wears huge shoulder pads that make him look about 50 pounds heavier than he is. Nikita Scherbak would make a fine first- or second-round pick for the Washington Capitals, who seem to attract former Saskatoon Blades like flies on poo poo (see also: Holtby, Braden; Green, Mike; Erat, Martin.) Scherbak!

Update: In the time since this was written, Scherbak got another 8 points, was named to the Top Prospects game (where he got a couple of sweet breakaways that went nowhere but hopefully got him noticed), and was injured by a giant shitstain on the Prince George Cougars, who hauled our star forward to the ground by his arm and punched him in the back of the head a bunch of times while the officials watched and laughed. He is currently out with an upper-body injury (read: hosed-up shoulder) that is probably going to tank his draft status to the second round. Scherbak!

After a long road set while their arena was occupied by ravenous monster trucks, the Saskatoon Blades finally return home for their final game against the hated Regina Pats. The Blades managed to take Calgary to OT on Friday in a ridiculous 6-5 barn-burner that ended 11 seconds into the extra frame, thanks to some dumb idiot on the Hitmen who scored a lucky goal that sucked. The next day, they took out their rage on the Red Deer Rebels, beating them 4-1 in a game I didn't get to listen to because the stupid phone app wasn't working properly.

Tonight the Blades honour longtime play-by-play man Les Lazaruk, who called his 1500th game on Saturday. Les was also chosen fourth overall by the Winnipeg Jets in Hockles' SAS Be a Pro thread. Congratulations, Les!

Anyway Calgary, Islanders(x2!), Washington, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Ottawa fans, went to a Regina Pats- Edmonton Oil Kings game last night. Your team has a draft pick playing. Oils won 5-2. Game was even and it was 3-2 midway through the second when Regina's shiny new trade goalie got grenaded into the red pipe and didn't move for a couple minutes. He would have been stretchered I swear if he had been 27 and had a $4 million contract. It kinda unravelled after that.

For the Pats:

Flames: You have one (1) Morgan Klimchuk (1st round, '13)

The Valeri of Jordan Eberle's Pavel. He is a volume scorer, like I would say with Eberle while at Regina. And I don't really think Eberle is all he is/was made out to be. Klimchuk himself has really good acceleration, maybe not the fastest player overall though. He did have a few dangerous chances but doesn't always know when to dish the biscuit around and when to hold on to it a little longer. He did hustle, but not consistently and definitely not in all three zones. Whatever, if he develops a work ethic and learns a little about "placement" and "timing" before developing CTE he looks like 25 goals or something, but they will be an angry, frustrating 25 goals for you.
Bullshit score I just made up: C- because he doesn't deserve a D, but he's never gonna be as good as some people want him to be. Bad Porn, or whatever - sure there's penetration and scoring, but do you really like what you see?
0-0-0 and a -2

Isles: You have William S. Kyle Burroughs (7th round, '13)
I dunno. I had 6 skaters for the Pats I thought had a notably good game. He wasn't one of them. He didn't really stand out and I didn't know he was NHL property till I stole the info. package that the Pats provide that always gets left on the scouts' table after the game. The Pats have an average power play (19%) and a laughably bad pk (73%) and he is on both. The power play went oh fer and the pk gave up 2 I think (and an EN SH). So not a good night for him.

Bullshit score I just made up: He gets the most :effort: C for being invisible

0-1-1 were his only marks

Caps: Chandler "ph" Stephenson(3rd round, '12)

I loved this guy so, so much. Awesome awareness and positioning, skated hard to the very end of the game, made a lot of excellent plays with and without the puck and was physical. He is 5'11 and 200 lbs. He seems destined to be a 3rd line grinder once he starts playing consistently against men who work as hard as he does. He is having a really stellar year 29-52-81 in 64 games, though he is turning 20 in April, so "old kid in juniors" is a definite risk. If his hands stay caught up to his mental game he could have some potential, that 20-30 mark again, but the rest of his game will make you happy no matter what (KLIMCHUK). I will be cheering for him.

Bullshit score I just made up: A+

Stars: Dmitry "hosed off to North America" Sinitsyn (7th, '12)

OHMYGOD This guy has next enigmatic star Russian dman written all over him. He was everywhere. He was nowhere. What he is is an old CHL "rookie" Moscow born who hosed off to College originally then hosed off to the coldest winter REGINA loving SASKATCHEWAN has had as long as I have been here. He had huge hits he connected and missed on. Smooth, strong skater. Big time slapper. The only point shot in the game I was impressed by. He also made way too many lolololol moves and doesn't know when to say enough is enough. Apparently he is first round talent but his stock fell super hard due to visa issues. Well Dallas, he's baby Zubov. I really like him, so long as he stops doing all the stupid things Junior defencemen do.

Bullshit score I just made up: B-, because it is the average of A+ and D, or whatever.

Otherwise, Dyson "v" Stevenson had a really good game, as did Dryden Hunt. Hunt is draft eligible this year. Later rounds, if he's lucky. Stevenson is 21 lol. So yea, he will end up an accountant or something whenever he's done with riding ECHL/AHL bus routes. Our goalie Wapple was doing awesome (and is this year for us) before his spine got snapped against the post. He was draft eligible last year but he sports a pretty good SV% and I liked him - he's feisty, and had a good glove hand.

For Edmonton:

I wasn't paying attention to your team as much. You only get the players I noticed for whatever reason at all. gently caress off.

Pittsburgh: Goalie Tristan Jarry (44th overall, '13). Having a good year. Had a good game. There was about 5 minutes in the 3rd where the Pats looked like they wanted to come back and he made 3 or 4 good saves.

Islanders: '12 4th overall pick dman Griffin Reinhart. Yea he was good. I kept noticing him loving with our forwards pretty effectively. Didn't lug the puck a whole bunch, so he didn't stand out offensively, though apparently he finished +3.

Phoenix: '12 27th overall pick Henrik Samuelsson. Regina shut his line down. It was the second line and PP that powered this game for Edmonton. Didn't realize he was supposed to be really good till the 3rd period. I unno.

Ottawa '13 17th overall pick Curtis Lazar. He was buzzing. Got first star. Got a goal and 3 points. Looked really good offensively.

Edgars Kulda (undrafted, '12 eligible) looked pretty good (2 goals). This is only his second season over here, so who knows about him.

All these people are plugs except lazar gently caress Regina

BITTER DOES NOT DESCRIBE OUR FURY

The PA-Saskatoon rivalry is legendary, or at least it used to be back in the day. Part of our spitefulness is based on trying to reignite that rivalry, since most of the PA games this year have been pretty tame compared to last year. Maybe we'll see some sparks this weekend if they're fighting for their lives!

Brandon, Red Deer, and Prince Albert are at 73, 71, 71 points respectively. Brandon has the 2 point lead, but PA & RD have a game in hand and would win a tie-breaker over the Wheat Kings.

Prince Albert plays Regina and Red Deer plays Kootenay today, then each of the 3 teams has a home and home on Fri/Sat to close the season:
  • Prince Albert plays Saskatoon (11th in the East)
  • Brandon plays Regina (2nd in the East [due to Division lead, otherwise like 5th by points])
  • Red Deer plays Edmonton (1st in the East)

Statistically, and based on the quality of team they play, it's Brandon's and PA's berth to lose. Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Hockey Team has a good chance to come out of the East in my opinion. You're drawing a relatively bad Red Deer or Brandon in the first round and Medicine Hat is down basically everyone worth mentioning (hahahahaha Shinkaruk hahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA HE'S HURT HAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH), so getting out of the second round isn't really all that hard to do. The road to the Memmer is going through Kelowna no matter what, so it's just a matter of whether you face Edmonton or Calgary in the East finals. Now, on to some other stuff.
In an unrelated note, Portland opens the playoffs on 3/21 against the Vancouver Giants. The Giants will probably be without former Saskatoon Blade and noted extremely good and truculent player Dalton Thrower, who as captain led the Vancouver Giants out of the Western Conference basement and back into the playoffs.
Exhibit A from the Memorial Cup 2013.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7284APpR_A

Karma is a bitch, however. Much like how glorious Icarus flew too close to the sun, so too flew our hero; it looks like Thrower's junior career is over due to injury. It would have been so nice to have seen him (potentially) score the goal that eliminates the Portland Winterhawks in the first round. Although, he would probably have dished out another completely clean hit, hopefully into Derek Pouliot's soft skull, given the chance. My pick, Giants over the Winterhawks in 4.

In the sense that they're using an RBK Edge template that no team in the NHL currently uses, yes. Every team in the CHL, AHL, and NHL is using one of the cookie cutters that Reebok makes in one form or another.
I think PA's new jerseys are a test batch for a bunch of variants Reebok came up with: the priest collar, the triangle stripe sleeves and the shiny gold fabric are all things that nobody else is using yet. Wouldn't surprise me to see an NHL team that's due for a rebrand using those sleeves to recapture the old spiky triangle shoulders from the 90s. Pittsburgh or Florida maybe?
