There's a rumour going around that the Emperor might send the Alliance more invites to his Winter Court than usual this year. The Monkey and Tortoise are all but guaranteed invites now, and several other clans have a chance when they didn't before. Some of these clans are making last-minute efforts to impress the Emperor, which is starting to cause tension in Alliance ranks. Everything seems fine right now. Palace of the Small Forest, City of the Smiling Tortoise, World of Dreams 20th Day of the Monkey, 3122 The World of Dreams. Official capital of the Scorpion Clan, the most populated world in the Empire, and the headquarters of the Minor Clan Alliance. The Scorpion wanted to make a big show of goodwill in front of the other Clans, and they're friends with the Monkey anyway, so the Alliance got an entire chunk of one of their megacities. Egao Kame Toshi is a big place - it has to be, because each of the dozens of Minor Clans have a representatives here and thousands of samurai pass through here every day. It is loud, strange and eclectic, a melting pot of hundreds of odd traditions. Great Clan samurai have trouble getting used to the place, and have called it anything from "an insult to the Empire" to "utterly fascinating". To Minor samurai like you, it's pretty normal. The Palace of the Small Forest contains the Alliance's court and all its major offices, and is busy as hell all around the clock. You and the crew of the Otokodate-maru came here looking for a job a while ago, and you just got lucky - you've been summoned by Toku Bakami, the City Governor. She tends to leave her schedule flexible and assume that whatever happens to it is what the Fortunes wanted, so all you know is she wants to see you "tonight". You have time to stop at the food plaza or something if you want, though it's best not to keep her waiting too long. . . . Sup guys! Please post your stats here for quick reference later. Ujina Risuta Ujina Risuta carefully scanned his steely gaze about the food plaza, sizing up the myriad choices afforded to someone of his station, who also had the luxury of being upon one of the most cosmopolitan planets in the galaxy. Finally, in his heart of hearts he knew what he must do - it had been foretold from the start, for when he rose this very morning he knew how this event would end. He drew... himself closer to one particular venue and ordered up kare raisu. He had been dying since breakfast, in particular because spicy breakfasts are generally frowned upon and protocol wouldn't really permit him unless he was literally on his own, and even then he'd have to be careful because surveillance (as dishonourable as it is) has become more and more ubiquitous with every passing year. I mean of course he could have gone for kare udon or even kare-pan (if he was in a rush) but no, only kare raisu would do at this juncture. Taking his perfectly legitimately-gotten gains away from the vendor, he paced his steps so as to minimise the amount of time he would spent waiting on his own, as he made his way back to a seat that would no doubt be empty given how lightning-fast his iaijutsu-borne reflexes were on this occasion. The dark-haired young man sat at a table, spoon at the ready - careful not to get any of the delicious sauce on his clothing as he extremely patiently waited for his fellows to return with their food. The amount of time they take to get back to him is seriously dishonourable, plus getting in the way of a samurai's kare raisu would be grounds for a duel if the duel itself would not get in the way of eating said kare raisu. If The Emperor himself was here he would back Ujina Risuta up on this issue, seriously. Go ask. No-one will miss that he has already taken a few slight sips of sake already anyway, because they would be too keenly aware of how much time they are taking. (2) Daredevil: You have a natural flair for athleticism and a complete lack of self-preservation when it comes to physical danger. Whenever you spend a Void Point to enhance an Athletics Skill Roll, you gain a bonus of +3k1 to the total of the roll instead of the normal +1k1. (3) Ancestor: Usagi Reichin: The founder of the Hare Clan was a man known for both his cheerful nature and for his clever tactics and great courage against the Bloodspeaker Cult. His guidance grants you a +1k1 bonus when resisting Fear effects; if the Fear is caused by a Bloodspeaker, the bonus is +2k2 instead. (7) Constraint: Although Reichin was a pragmatic ronin, he also fought with supreme courage in the Battle of the Bloody Retreat. If you ever flee from a battle with a Bloodspeaker when there is still a chance of victory, Reichin will forsake you. Disadvantages Compulsion: Sake: There is some activity in which you are hopelessly compelled to partake. It is a ritual that is so ingrained in your behavior that it requires a feat of will to forsake it, even in dire circumstances. This may be something illicit and addictive, such as sake or gambling (it's sake), or it may be as innocuous as visiting every major temple you pass. The basic Disadvantage requires a Willpower Trait Roll of TN 15 to overcome. (2) Cursed by the Realm: Meido: The ennui of the Realm of Waiting fills your soul. When unoccupied by physical activity or social interaction, you tend to lapse into a trance-like state that causes you to suffer a penalty of -1k0 to all Perception-based rolls. (4) Fascination: Spicy Food: You are completely fascinated by some subject, and will go to great lengths to learn more about it or to experience it in new ways. Typical subjects of a samurai’s fascination include music, horses, poetry, and history. This fascination badly impedes your judgment, and you will take even dishonorable actions to learn more, which could end in absolute disgrace if your actions are discovered. (1) True Love: True love in Rokugan can be a wonderful experience, but more often than not it is a disaster, for it is rare for samurai to be allowed to marry for love. Whenever you are in a position where you must choose between love and duty, you must spend a Void Point before you can choose your duty over your lover. Komori Hirofumi The streets of The Palace of the Small Forest were crowded, bustling with people with surely important things to do, sidetracked by a growling belly into the food courts. Hirofumi squeezed through the crowd, bumping into seemingly every single person there and mumbling well-intended but half-hearted apologies the whole time. Clutched tightly to his chest, a satchel, contents fragile and precious. His shoulders could take the jostling, but the satchel might not. Hirofumi thought he had just enough time to get a quick game in before meeting up with the rest of the crew of the Otokodate-maru, and later, the governor, but his opponent had been playing Tsuno, a difficult opponent for his Space Samurai. Their commander, a heavy man whose odor was surely for verisimilitude with his army, lacked honor and respect. He laughed at the traditional bowing before the beginning of the match, and hadn't even bothered to paint most of his force! Hirofumi's Tarantula Hawks, were of course decorated in accurate blacks, reds, and oranges, and in the end were victorious. Nits were picked at every turn, causing the game to run later than expected, and now Hirofumi was nearly late. There were hundreds of noodle shacks in the city, each claiming to be the best in some area or another. A lesser mind could get lost here, or have to resort to a guide or worse yet, shamefully ask for directions. Hirofumi knew the place, though. All he needed was the name, and the secrets of the restaurant were open to him, through their digital presence (small though it was). The address was all he needed, but he wouldn't and couldn't stop there. He knew that their scallops were fresh, but to avoid the oysters and the owner's daughter, a waitress who was involved with the Scorpion police. He had stopped short from digging any further there, though. Some secrets weren't worth the risk. He stopped and looked up at the sign, this was the place. Luckily, it was mostly empty. He might be late, but he wasn't last. Marumaru Naganori Naganori wanders through the Palace of the Small Forest, a bemused expression on his face as he looks back and forth from the tablet in his hand and the area around him. He's so clearly lost that he's attracted a small trailing escort of palanquin brokers who can't quite fathom what sort of samurai would willing wander around aimlessly when he could be carried in dignity to his destination. For his part, Naganori politely pretends not to notice them. He is a Crow, and that means self reliance. He's also a young Crow in the middle of his wandering years, and that means broke, especially after the events of the day. He'd gone out ahead of the others because he'd hoped to visit a few of the sites. First he'd stopped to eat and see the famous sushi train, only to have it derail in his lap. After exchanging effusive apologies with the proprietor and a brief trip to a kimono shop, he'd made his way to the Shrine of All Fortunes, the immense structure that claimed to honor each and every Fortune ever named in the history of the Empire. Unfortunately it was closed for renovations - save for the gift shop. He hoped his shipmates would appreciate the presents, but even as he was paying he was wondering if the old man running the place might have tricked him into buying something tacky. No help for it now. Naganori sighs, rubs his chin, and checks the KomoriMaps again. "Has to be here somewhere..." He goes around a corner, and finds himself at his destination - which his tablet announces pleasantly and rather loudly, leading to a few fumbling moments as he silences it and apologizes to those around him. Toki Misuko In a different part of the Palace of the Small Forest, another member of the crew continues to be sidetracked and ambushed by the constant stream of people following her around. These people are not bodyguards, nor a procession of courtiers, nor needling merchants looking to peddle their wares. Oh no, these folk are far more persistent, far more chattering, and far more eager to lay their lives down for the young lady they currently orbit around. Yes, friend, they are pop idol fans. And there's a still long hallway to cross before the lady reaches the food plaza. "And... 'yours truly, Mitsu-chan'. There we go~" Toki Misuko walks straight along the extremely crowded path, signing yet another album with her likeness on the cover. She passes it off to the girl who owns it, just in time to have another case foisted to her face. "Now, now, mind yourselves." She tells the wide-eyed crowd in a sing-song voice. "I'll have all your albums signed, don't worry. Fortunes bless me to have such... dedicated fans greeting me all the time." She hears a question in the far back. "Oh! Oh yes, I will be playing live in that world this month, in honor of the new daimyo's succession. Please look forward to it~" Another question emerges, this one she seems a little less enthused to answer. A concert in the Golden Mirror? "Ah... all I can say is my manager hasn't reached agreeable terms with the Crane to grace the planet with my presence. Perhaps in due time. Just keep checking my fan page for updates and look forward to my new album this coming winter!" Twenty-four signed albums, a hundred eighty-seven steps, and far too many inane questions about her personal life later, Misuko at last reaches the entrance to the food plaza. The fans hover around her until she needs to explain again that she can't let them enter, lest they startle the crew like last time. They will have to admire her from afar, like the "many sisters of Amaterasu that light the black void of the Empire". "And just like them, I'll always be shining for you all~" With that catchphrase, she traces a star in the air that turns into her sparkly trademark sigil via Bat Special Effects. "You can return tomorrow to visit me again! Ja ne!" A few minutes later, Misuko finds her fellow crewmates and sit next to them with a fabulous Kakita-made sushi meal in her hands. "Ah, Komori-san, Marumaru-san." She drops the idol persona and greets her crew with a more normal tone, for the sake of everyone's sanity (including her own). Kasuga Kei As Risuta waited impatiently for the others to arrive, ready to eat, he hears what is assuredly a chuckle because proper samurai do not giggle. Even if they are Tortoise. And what was at one point a youngish looking girl happily devouring an exotic bowl of Mekham-style Curry eagerly leans over to catch his eye. "Hey, nii-san. You gonna fume all day, or are you going to dig in? Because the only thing worse then food too spicy, is food too spicy and cold." Kasuga Kei doesn't stand out in a crowd. In fact, she'd probably only be recognizable if she really wanted to, and maybe not even then. The Tortoise weren't the most attractive clan, and while Kei was far from ugly, that was...probably the kindest thing that could be said. She was entirely, undescribibly bland. She was never outright rude, but always seemed just on the wrong side of polite. She always gave exact change, to the zeni - and even sometimes tried to haggle, the miser! And she always seemed associated with the dirtier workers around the palace. So. A Tortoise. Once you recognize who she is, it's easy to spot the normally inconspicuous mon (on one side; the other side had a patch of the Tortoise's mediocre attempt at branding, Someisa-chan). And now her all to bright and smiling face was centered directly on the grumpy Hare. "Oh, don't look like that. Come on, one's company. The others will find us even if they cannot hear the grumbling of your belly. Ah, here they come now! I see Marumaru-san, and Komori-san! Ah, and here's Toki-nee-san! Ujina Risuta Ujina Risuta was slow to reply, but did so quietly. "It is fine, we are not on some kami-forsaken asteroid farming something that few care, let along know about. It can wait." Ujina Risuta stared deeply into his meal-to-be for a moment, before he turned to the much-adulated (somewhat artificially, felt Risuta) pop star. "I would not dream of such a thing." he keenly replied, as he waited the moments and could feel the motion of time itself ticking away. Risuta sat there in perfect harmony with the world, his destiny being certain but somewhat delayed by the sheer, awesome time-consuming nature of his colleagues. It is just as well that in this day and age the bowls and plates in food plazas such as this have individual temperature (and other condition) controls in order to maximise the amount of time one could possibly wait after receiving a meal before eating it without having cooled off or melted or similar. Unfortunately this very property may well have been fated to doom Risuta on this occasion as the others would undoubtedly (as is their presumably honourless way) not make haste in acquiring their meal and sitting where appropriate.

When she shakes around the figure's bobbly head, it starts to spin around in its stand and belt out a pre-recorded enka ballad. "Oh, that is lovely! Thank you as well, Marumaru-san." Amused, she sets down the tiny, singing Fortune close to her bowl. "And yes, I prefer to eat first. This is a gracious meal that I cannot afford to leave behind." Misuko leaves it unsaid that she also prefers at least several minutes with herself and the crew before she faces her fans outside once more. Some of them are always lingering around.

Kohaku Kozue Belatedly, Kozue pops out in one of the stalls, chatting amiably with one of the peasant workers. There's perhaps a time where the Hare might notice her, just chatting away in the middle of the stall for what may as well be an eternity. Finally, though, she comes up to the table, bearing three wooden boats, one in each hand and one atop her head. and then sets them down one at a time, each one heaped with takoyaki. That's... a lot of octopus. And sauce. And mayo Then, her burden relieved, she bows. "Muneo-san wanted to thank me, and I had to get away from him before he cooked me any more..." Settling in, she clasps her hands. "Itadakimasu!" Ujina Risuta The time was right. The kami themselves had foretold what was about to happen. The sheer certainty of this even pressed upon the tapestry of existence. Ujina Risuta ate his kare raisu. He enjoyed it too. After he had finished he began to chat more in his earnest, with a cup of sake on the side. "Thank you for such a gift." Risuta remarked, accepting the presumably tacky miscellanea that was gifted to him so... eloquently. "Also it would not do for us to be hungry and seem unhelpful on the occasion of this meeting. It would distract our minds so easily." he replied on the occasion of eating first, not that it mattered now that the chosen deed had been undertaken, but he meant well.

Time to find out! You finish your meal and head to... . . . Governor's Office, Kyuden Kobayashi Governor Bakami's secretary waves you in as soon as you show up. Guess her schedule was free! Her office sits on one of the upper levels of the Palace, with a wall-length window offering a commanding view of the city. Half of it is a lounge with a massive viewscreen, and the other half is a personal office tucked away behind a sliding partition. Hanging scrolls decorate the office, each with a tenet of Bushido written on it in huge, flowing symbols; some Monkey think this counts as a ward against evil spirits. The place is also decorated with Mobile Suit Ō-yoroi posters and figurines. They do not ward against evil spirits. The Governor is sitting behind her desk when you come in, engaging in very important activities while she waits for an appointment to show up. Toku Bakami  "Ah! Hello," Bakami gets up and bows. "It's a pleasure to meet you. Can I get you anything? Tea, perhaps?" She waves you to the seats with her robot arm. . . . Alright, gonna try something out here. Since augmented reality and social networks exist in the future, it is possible to "tag" another samurai with a piece of virtual data. In practice, what this means is Clan samurai anonymously share short notes and pictures with the rest of their Clan containing information they might find relevant. When you meet an important NPC, I'll give you a quick line representing things you see when you check their tags on your Clan's network. If you want more, you need to roll as usual. Risuta: In practice, the whole Cult Likelihood thing just tells you how much of a dick someone is (because people who are dicks are more likely to be bloodspeakers). There are a few other factors but they usually specifically flag it if it's a problem. In Bakami's case, she just gets really snappy if you say her name with an emphasis on the "baka". Misuko: Nope, but Bakami likes a few bands with a similar style to yours. This might be an opportunity to gain a fan! Toku Bakami Tea is served in the lounge. Bakami sits with you and relates her request over it. "The reason I sent for you is because I have a job that needs doing, and I can't ask the Monkey to do it. Ah..." She sips and puts her tea down. "The Emperor will send out invitations to the Winter Court soon. You've heard the rumours, yes? Ah, as it turns out, the Emperor's son is visiting the Alliance to deliver our invitations personally. It's rumoured he'll decide which Clans get an invitation when he gets here. Some of the Alliance Champions have been preparing special gifts for him just in case." She glances at a picture of the Monkey Clan Champion hanging in her office. "Saruwatari-sama asked me to arrange a... unique gift in secret. I've commissioned something, I just need someone to pick it up. If I sent a group of Monkey on an important mission the other Clans would suspect something, see?" She smiles. "All I need are couriers who can act in secrecy."

She doesn't know if she can handle secrets, but she can definitely make it look like they're carrying something other than prized Monkey gifts. That should help, right? In any case, she looks forward to the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Emperor's son. "In any case, we shall see it done. For the Alliance, of course." She slides a blank scroll with the Governor's seal stamped on it over to you. "After that, return it to me."
