Ujina Risuta

Ujina Risuta considers what has been said thus far. His expression is passive, although he does take any and all prompts to take a drink to do so (including other people drinking), as he ponders things. "You mentioned that the Kitsuki have a presence here? Have they had any interactions with this occurrence? Are any of them investigating this as well?" inquired Risuta as his mind 'raced' (more akin to slowly manoeuvred like a ship on a placid sea) through the myriad possibilities or concerns that could be occurring.

Hirofumi

Dagon posted:

Lumping in a few things. I'd like to investigate the criminal activity, particularly following the money. If I need to, I'll hack into bank or clan records to find evidence of involvement with or against Hamaya.

An interesting question! And you supplemented your efforts with a sweet hacking roll, so here's some info! It's up to you whether to act on it and whether to do it now or after the other disperse.

Hirofumi finds what he's looking for once he starts prying into Hamaya's financial information. It looks like Hamaya's official job was handling the bureaucratic side of the Dragonfly's interactions with non-Dragonfly in Kotone Province; it was a low-key and incredibly boring job, and he'd been getting away with taking bribes the side. Most of them are from Crane samurai for help making their Lucky Star vacations better, but beyond that Hirofumi learns some interesting things:

• The Bear, Bee and Octopus all tried bribing Hamaya for a little preferential treatment while he helped the Clans coordinate their Winter Court appearance. They had the decorum to make the bribes seem like official business, at least. (The Bee totally won that bribe war before Hamaya died.)

• Hamaya had been receiving payments from an ex-Bear ronin, Mekajiro. Mekajiro is the leader of a gang of smugglers in the city who have escaped arrest for years, partly thanks to suspected support from offworld Great Clan interests and partly thanks to bureaucratic snafus which Hamaya would never be implicated in if nobody noticed Mekajiro was paying him under the table.

• The larger crime groups in the city are either from the Great Clans or closely connected to them, and none of them like Hamaya. None of them have been working against him lately as far as Hirofumi can tell.

• He'd also been visiting Hanajin merchants pretty regularly over the last year, mostly to buy Hanajin medicines and drinks.

Toki Misuko

Misuko can arrange a meeting with her manager any time she likes, anywhere in Lucky Star. Decide when and where and it'll happen! :toot:

Kohaku Kozue

Otori tells Kozue why he was visiting Hamaya: "Honey. We want to show ours off at the Winter Court, but we can't bring enough for everyone. Hamaya-san was supposed to be arranging more storage space. It's getting a little late, though..."

When she snoops for rumours, Kozue learns that people have been gossiping that Hamaya was recently seen visiting a lady named Senjou. Apparently she's a ronin criminal being held prisoner by the Octopus or something. Hamaya seems to have a history of going a little soft on crime in the city if ronin or Minor Clans are involved, and it hasn't gone unnoticed - word is that a few weeks before he died he'd accidentally ruffled the feathers of a visiting Crane courtier who convinced the local Dragonfly magistrates to start poking into Hamaya's business.

Ujina Risuta

Tsugumi thinks about the Kitsuki. "The Kitsuki magistrates usually deal with crimes involving the Great Clans. It's a little easier for them than the Dragonfly, you see. I don't know if they're assisting the Dragonfly, but if you could use their assistance, they owe me a favour. I could show you where to find them."

Tako Takako winces for just a moment. "I'll accompany you if you do, of course."

You can get it done in the morning! Since Misuko arranged a meeting for the next morning anyway, I'm gonna go ahead and say you can use the night to either rest or get most of the work you were sent here for done without impacting this investigation any.

"That's fine," Tsugumi says. "We should be going anyway. Thank you for coming."

She bows, says her goodbyes, and strides off with purpose. Then she slows down so Takako can catch up. Only Kawaso Mikuji notices, and she pretends not to.

The rest of the night is relatively boring chatter, drink and business.

1st Day of the Rooster

Misuko (and anyone who wants to go with her) heads to the Silver Swan cafe. No matter Misuko gets there, her manager has gotten there slightly earlier so she can pout at her.

Toki Yukari

"Misuko! Good morning! You really should visit more. Especially with the Winter Court coming up! You should have come straight away. We've got a lot of work to do!"

"... So how are things?"

. . .

Kitsuki Gardens, Lucky Star City
About The Same Time

The Kitsuki Gardens stretch out for miles from the edge of Lucky Star City. It's packed with fields, flower bushes, bonsai trees and trickling streams, carefully designed so that no matter where you are you can see both the City and the lands of every Minor Clan in Kotone Province. There are a few tea/sake houses nearby on the Lucky Star side, with a lovely view of the gardens; Kozue can use them for drink or information, her pick. The Silver Swan is probably close enough.

Besides that, there's a wide stretch of gardens, a few samurai tourists wandering around, and some gardeners carefully tending the trees when people aren't looking. Plenty of avenues for Kozue to explore here!

. . .

What do you do? Who's with those two and who's investigating something else? You can keep in touch digitally if you have to, this is ~the future~ after all.

The next day, she finds herself in the Silver Swan cafe with her manager. Tea and crackers and all that. She's not exactly feeling the best here, but makes do.

"I'll try to come in more often, Yukari-san. You know how the alliance likes to work us all off at this time of year. I'm still on an errand for some Scorpion Ambassador!" She sighs loudly, speaking quite frankly in (hopefully) a private space. "And it seems things are piling further." She allows a smile. "But I'm fine, thank you for your concern! My next single is coming along well, I'll send you a sample of it when I get to the ship. Winter Court would make it a fantastic debut for it."

She then leans and speaks more discreetly.

"I actually need to ask a favor from you, Yukari-san. You've been here for a while. How much do you know of a certain Tonbo Hayama?"

Oh, right, this is why she was so eager to make her investigation last night. Plus, the chances of anything being covered up by now are a lot higher. Are they allowing tourists back in already? A samurai died here! She purses her lips. A deep breath, and a sigh. She still had everything she said she'd do. Why'd she say that? It's none of her business, but...

Slapping her cheeks again, she blinks, having wandered in front of the Silver Swan. Well, she'll stop in for tea and sweets, get her head down to "generally discordant", then it's time to hit the gardens! There isn't likely to be any evidence left, but she's got servants to bother meet!

Business before pleasure. Right? Pfffffff. Maybe for other clans.

Kawaso Mikuji's door receives a knocking, with a short Kasuga waiting on the other side, letter in hand.

"Kawaso-dono! It is I, Kei-chan! The adorable Tortoise girl on everyone's mind! And, I have something, just for you! It is a letter. Now, I cannot say I know what's inside. But!"

Kei makes a show of pressing the letter to her forehead and giving a look of complete concentration before continuing her sheer vocal barrage, not allowing the Otter to get a single word in otherwise.

"Yes...my amazing Tortoise powers are telling me...it is a letter of request! A hot request! A date request! It was sent by one Bayushi Asaji. 'Kei-chan, I know you are talented and just the cutest, but how do you know? Was it something sneaky and dishonorable?' Wow, rude. And no! We Tortoise just know things, without being sneaky OR dishonorable! Now I know what you're thinking. Bayushi! Aren't they Scorpion and dislike minor clans? And Asaji! Doesn't she have a reputation for being a bit creepy? Let me answer those questions! Doesn't matter! And! No! Well. Yes. Poor Bayushi-san does have a bit of a reputation, but she is not a bad person. And! If you have your doubts, let me tell you something."

Moving so fast and quietly as to be supernatural, Kei is now miraculously by Mikuji's side, sidling up and waggling her eyebrows.

"She's Bayushi. You know their reputation? It's that they are Benten Blessed. Very good looking. And Asaji! Yes! She is."

Kei makes vague motions around her hips and bust.

"Also she seems nice. Consider it! Don't tell her I said all this. I don't know if I was supposed to. But I am a good friend! So I am helping!"

A silencing finger comes up.

"No no no. I know what you are thinking. 'But Kei-chan, you are the only one for me, you are simply too cute to bear!' I am sorry Kawaso-dono. It's not that you are not handsome. You are! Very charming looking, really! Really really! I bet all the ladies get flustered around you. But! Asaji, she was nice to me, and I like her. It cannot be, Kawaso-dono. It cannot. But! Asaji, she is better then I am, I think. I am more adorable. But she is much more attractive! She has been blessed by, ehhhh, you know. That one fortune, the one of beauty and charm. And you do know! It is your job. I bet everyone will be jealous of you, when you accept. You will accept, right? Right, of course! Do not pine for me Kawaso-dono! We both are better off this way! Remember the lessons of the Fortune of That One Thing Where You Want Someone But End Up With Someone Else And You're Much Happier. I bet they have a shorter name then that though. That's a Fortune, right?"

Then - and only then - does Kei give a long enough pause for the samurai to respond.

"...What."

Silver Swan, Lucky Star City [Misuko]

Yukari nods thoughtfully. "Ah, Hamaya? Yes, I've heard of him. Poor man. Have you met the Bear yet? Or the Bee? Their feud is legendary. If Hamaya weren't around they'd have killed each other by now. The Bear can't fight, but the Bee can't safely invade them. Because of the bees."

Yukari sips her tea. "Or is it the other way around... Ah, whatever! So, Hamaya. He wasn't very interesting to talk to, but he got a lot of visitors. He was the sort of person who gets a lot of bribes and everybody's too polite to talk about it." Yukari winks. ""I've never had to, of course. But it mostly took place in the gardens. I heard the local smugglers went through him. And some of the casinos. I don't know them well, but they've hired singers from me before!"

Yukari can take you to visit some of Hamaya's "business partners" if you like!

. . .

Kitsuki Gardens, Lucky Star City [Kozue]

The gardeners are mostly monks. They're pretty open with passers-by, though after a small amount of bothering they direct Kozue to speak to the head gardener, Tsutsuji.

Tsutsuji turns out to be a young lady with the short, scrawny frame of a former street urchin and what looks like a blessing from the Fortune of Bed Hair; she has to look up and tilt her straw hat back for Kozue to see her face.

"Can I help ya?"

. . .

Kyuden Kawaso [Kei]

The Kawaso lands in Kotone Province are full of rocks, bamboo grass, and rivers that fall in beautiful waterfalls and rapids. It makes for some lovely listening while Kei waits for Mikuji to stop standing in one of the doorways in her crappy castle and staring at the letter like she saw a ghost.

After a while she snatches it up, opens it and reads it. Her face pales. Kei guesses Mikuji is mad superstitious.

"But she's... I... ghk... I... uuhhhh..."

Mikuji groans like she's ill, grips her head like she has a fever and turns away.

"t...tell her... I might not be able to make it..."

She smiles politely, and claps her hands in a prayer-like gesture, before rubbing her neck. "I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure where to start."

Though her dress is samurai, her tone shifts to more of a common tone, relaxing away from the eyes of her samurai peers. Of course, it's already part of the Kohaku tradition to shine a little dimly, to make others feel a bit brighter in their presence. "This isn't some superstitious thing, is it? Look, if you just outright drop out completely, do you really think people aren't going to whisper about it? And, Bayushi-san, she has a hard enough life as is, I mean I assume because I only met her once? I sure do talk friendly about someone I only met once! But the whispers, they will also be about her, and that is bad. So! Here is my idea: we prove the superstition wrong...together! Or, and this is just an idea, you just politely respond a negative, and I won't think bad about you - oh, no! Kei-chan, she lied just now. I will think a little bad about you. But politely so. Really, Bayushi-san, she is very pretty; you are missing out. But that is your choice! And it is your choice to respond with a YES or a NO. You may be thinking, 'Kei-chan, you are the cutest girl ever, I bet you are really popular with everyone in your clan, and that's why I don't want to say this because you will be disappointed. But...what if I want to just not respond and casually break Bayushi-san's heart?"

All amusement suddenly drains from Kei's face and she gives Kawaso a particularly hard look for a moment.

"You would be hurting my friend."

And then the grin is back!

"So you can't do that. Which is good! Because that is so impolite, gosh! So again, your choices are to go with her, or make me a little sad and choose to decline in a polite manner that involves you contacting her. I am ok with being a little sad though! What wonderful choices! In your heart, you are saying, 'Kei-chan, thank you. Thank you for giving me these choices. I did not have them before! And you brought them. You are basically the kami of wonderful choices and the ally of Benten himself. Did you know my clan is in charge of the fortunes? Maybe you should be the fortune of good news!' Wow! Really, Kawaso-dono? That is such a nice thing to think! I am super flattered! But Kawaso-dono, isn't that already a fortune? Tsk tsk, you should know that! Unless...you can make me their sidekick! Can you do that? I actually don't know. But that's another topic. So! What's your answer gonna be? Is it 'Kei-chan you talk so much that I cannot get a word in and now I am a bit scared of speaking!' Well, that's certainly a roll :eyepop:

Tsutsuji lights up! Kozue gets the impression that few samurai talk to her and those that do aren't very polite.

"Mmm-hmm! Poor Hamaya-sama. We might close the gazebo in his honor. Let's see, what'd the Magistrate ask..." Tsutsuji rubs her chin, then reaches up to tilt her hat up again. "Well, little outta the ordinary. He liked to do his business in the gazebo, so we got a lotta visitors. He had had Mikuji-sama of the Otter Clan for breakfast, Petal-sama of the Hanajin for second brunch, Tsugumi-sama for lunch... he was fine when they left. He asked for some tea. We did tea for him a lot." Tsutsuji rakes the garden she was working on idly. "'Bout an hour later we realized he'd stopped movin'. That's when we sent for help."

"Oguma-sama of the Bear Clan came after. They were supposed to have afternoon tea together. We had to console him. He asked if the Bee had been 'round but they hadn't. The usual, that." She doesn't say "those two Clans hate each other's guts" because even the flowers know that. "The Magistrate questioned us. I think that's everything I was asked."

Tsutsuji beams. "That help?"

Takako shows up as soon as he can.

"Hello," he gives Risuta a bow and doesn't sit down. "Sorry, I had to make sure things were secure at Kyuden Tako first. Shall we visit the Magistrates? I have a few hours, then Tsugumi-sama will be visiting Lucky Star and she'll... need my guidance."

Yukari winks. "Of course. Well. There's a gambling den he liked to visit. I don't, of course," she adds smoothly, "but I do like to scout the talent they use. The Ibis have met quite a few idols in secret places like that!"

It's not even that far! The Hidden Kitsune gambling den turns out to be hidden in the basement of a uninteresting noodle restaurant; the people here are mostly commoners, but there are plenty of Great Clan samurai here too. They are probably the reason the Hidden Kitsune is larger than the restaurant above it and staffed with pretty, well-dressed waitresses. There seems to be an unspoken agreement that nobody here will pry into anyone's business, because most of the samurai groups are pointedly positioned to avoid facing the others where possible.

Yukari ignores them and heads towards a door in the back, but your way is blocked by a slightly nervous waitress.

"Ah, hello, Yukari-sama." The waitress bows. "This is really a bad time..."

A barely-audible cry of "HOW IS HE DEAD?" floats past and interrupts her.

There's a short pause, then the waitress sighs in defeat and just lets you through before you say anything.

. . .

The back of the Hidden Kitsune is normally a quiet and understated place—the goods are kept hidden, the weapons are tucked away in office desks and the guards don't flaunt it. Today, though, it's just a mess. Some people are packing up and preparing to leave, others are running around demanding to know what's going on, and others are trying to get the rest to just sit down and shut up until they can work out what's going on.

The scurrying people part before Yukari as she leads you on, if only because they're too confused to say anything. The office of the Hidden Kitsune's owner Mekajiro seems to be the center of attention, so Yukari leads you there.

Mekajiro was a tall, broad-shouldered man with hands like hammers and noticeably oversized feet which earned him the nickname of The Paw back when he was with the Bear. He's handsome if you search for his profile, but the one sprawled in front of his desk in his office is missing a head so it's hard to tell. This Mekajiro is wrapped in a simple white yukata, though it was obviously stained by his murder, and it hangs open to expose sword wounds still dripping with coolant. His neck is a mess, with wires and tubes still hanging out and coolant pooling all around it.

When you enter, one of Mekajiro's right-hand men is standing there shouting "WHY ISN'T HE BLEEDING?! WHAT IS THIS, OIL?". He spots you as you walk in and moves to block you from investigating, though he's obviously too distressed to be at all effective.

"Hey, you can't come in here! Wait, are you magistrates or something?"

. . .

Kozue

"Sure, sure!" Tsutsuji starts heading that way. "That was Sanyuan what served the tea. Nice boy. Hasn't read a lot of books but he's got good intuition."

The Gardens have a shrine, though since the Otter have temples nearby it's seldom used. Sanyuan is here making sandwiches for the other monks when you show up. He's sort of the opposite of Tsutsuji: Where she's a small young lady shaped a little like a ragged doll with the bearing of a former street urchin, Sanyuan is a balding man built like a terracotta statue with the weary, scarred body of a former bushi.

Tsutsuji barges in. "Sanyuan! You made tea for Hamaya, yeah?"

It's a roundabout way to ask, but she may as well hook up as his shadow if he goes to the tea. "I don't mean to be rude, but I haven't had much Crab tea. Is it strong? I bet it's strong.", she says, with a cautious sort of eagerness to her tone.

Marumaru Naganori

"Yes," Naganori agrees amiably. They are something, after all. He walks around the... body? ... and crouches down to examine it. "An automaton, then."

He looks down, and shuffles back slightly to avoid the spreading coolant. "One that someone was very upset with. Does anyone know when this happened?"

Risuta

Takako moves fast. It's a little odd—the way he moves when he's leading Risuta is the way he moves when he walks with Tsugumi but without the deference, as though both actions are the same for him.

Lucky Star's magistrates have a nice tall building on the edge of the city's swankier district, close enough to the casinos and other places that Great Clan tourists like to visit to loom in the skyline as a casual reminder that just because this is a Minor Clan city doesn't mean you can push people around here. As the yojimbo of a Clan Champion, Takako has no problems getting to the office of the magistrate assigned to Hamaya's case.

Kitsuki Taehime

The Kitsuki magistrate is surrounded by an army of screens and seems to be taking them all in when Risuta and Takako enter, but waves a hand to to turn them off once the samurai sit down.

"Good morning. Ujina Risuta-san, yes?" Taehime casually sizes Risuta up. "Takako-san informed me of your visit. If you'd like to know about Tonbo Hamaya, I can help you with that."

Toki Misuko

Misuko tries not to look too hard at the dead... corpse. Yes, they can agree it's a thing that looks like a corpse. This job, sometimes.

"Yukari-san," She whispers, giving her manager the side-eye. "did you know the owner was a robot or had a robot double?"

Mizuko+Naganori

"I did not," Yukari whispers. "I've barely seen him outside this office..."

"Last night," the right-hand man tells Naganori. "At least, we found him here this morning. Uh... He worked late most nights. He wasn't seen leaving, s-so..."

Naganori examines the robot body. Something about it strikes him as a little familiar, but he can't put his finger on it just yet. The sword wounds on his body are extremely precise—someone good with a blade walked in here and cut down Mekajiro as he got up from his desk. There are more cuts in the carpet around the neck, which is more of a hack job with wires and synthetic flesh scraps everywhere. It looks like the blade's owner hacked his head off after he went down. They probably didn't know a lot about robots, because there's a clasp in the base of the neck of this one.

Let me know if there's anything else you want to find out/roll!

Kozue

"Good," Sanyuan says as he heats up the pot. "Made with macha. Crab bring it from Hida Tertius. Simple, but strong."

There's enough left to make cups for the three of you, thankfully. Sanyuan sets them out, bows, and sips his own. Tsutsuji prefers to savor the heat of her cup, but sips hers next.

Kozue probably waits for both of them, but it probably doesn't matter either. Sanyuan pauses for a moment, seemingly lost in thought, then reaches out and puts his hands over your cups.

"Apologies." He sets them down. "This is not macha." He tastes his again. "Not all macha. Hint of something else."

Tsutsuji looks at her cup. "Oh. ... Well, can ya make us a new one? That smell is making me thirsty."

I'm going to make my friends eat infinite oregano and they'll have to do it because the recipe says so!
Ujina Risuta

Ujina Risuta bowed deeply, as appropriate given the difference in their stations. "Many thanks for meeting Tako-sama and I on such short notice." he began, working in his well practised diplomatic attitudes that he had performed so well in the past, but lately has had less of an excuse to deploy. "If you do not mind, I would appreciate moving relatively swiftly onto business, I am sure you are very busy and do not need excessive pleasantries when you would rather be returning to your more immediate work. With that in mind, the reason why I requested an audience with such an esteemed magistrate as yourself, is that I am hoping you might be able to shed any light on the... unfortunate and mysterious... event surrounding Tonbo Hamaya, my associates and I have volunteered to assist in such a matter and I would greatly appreciate any information that you may have come across with regards to this event." stated Risuta rather business-like, while remaining polite - he knew that Kitsuki were generally all-business, a trait that has made things difficult for them throughout the history of their organisation, but one that Risuta could take advantage of in such trying times.

Kohaku Kozue

Kozue sips simply and early with closed eyes. It may be suicidal, but she's lived a charmed life. Of course, even charmed lives still end...

Finally, she opens her eyes as he interrupts. "Sanyuan.", she says simply, with clearer eyes than usual. "Do you know who may have put something in the tea?" She sniffs at her cup, squinting. Well, she's no Shosuro poison master, even if there is anything in there, but Tsutsuji seems to have been right about Sanyuan's intuition.

Marumaru Naganori

"This is the work of a superior swordsman." Naganori points at the wounds on the body. "These cuts are precise. But they do not know much about automata." He points at where the neck was hacked. "This is shoddy work. A samurai skilled enough to deal those wounds would be able to take a head with one clean stroke - on a proper person."

He points to the clasp. "Of course, with this model they could have simply undone this, but they didn't. Possibly the did not wish to touch the automata's... flesh?"

Naganori stands up and regards Yukari. "Most samurai this skilled are known of. Can you tell me which of those were here in the last day?"
