I Failed At Anime 2022

Platforms: PS3, PS Vita
Release Date: March 25, 2014 (NA PS3); April 24, 2014 (JP Vita); Summer 2014 (NA Vita)

:siren:The mere existence of certain characters is a spoiler in the story. If for some reason you actually care about Blazblue's story, I do not recommend reading this OP. That being said, I ask everyone mark spoilers if you want to discuss the story or characters or whatever.:siren:

Is this another update of Continuum Shift?

No, it's an entirely new entry in the Blazblue series. It furthers the story, adds quite a few characters, and makes some mechanic changes.

Will there be a million updates of this version?

Who honestly knows? Chances are yes. It's also very likely getting a sequel.

What's all new in the game?

-Bursts now regenerate. You no longer have a set number of bursts you can do, so long as the match goes on and you fill the Burst Meter you can do Bursts and Overdrives.
-Overdrive Mode has replaced the Gold Bursts from previous games. Overdrive Mode is activated by hitting ABCD together at once when not being attacked and it'll put your character into a state where they have special properties added to their attacks until the Overdrive meter runs out. The lower your health, the longer the meter lasts and should you choose to overdrive while comboing Overdrive's time will be cut in half. Green Bursts are still in the game.
-7 New Characters! I'll take about those a bit more later, but 5 of them are in the game and 2 are DLC. One of which you get for free for pre-ordering the game.
-Revamped aesthetics. The music has been redone by Ishiwatari, sprites have been redrawn to look nicer, and finally all voice actors have rerecorded their dialogue so as to not be using sound clips from three different VAs in one character.
-Guard Break is gone. A new mechanic has been added called "Crush Trigger" where by pressing A and B together, the character will perform an attack which instantly breaks the opponent's guard at the cost of meter. However, it cannot break the opponent's guard if they are using a barrier.
-Hitstop has been lessened with the intention of making combos shorter and faster.
-All characters have new moves, some have had old moves changed, and some Distortions have become only useable in Overdrive.
-There is a new sound for getting hit and it's great.

:siren:SO LET'S TALK ABOUT SOME CHARACTERS!:siren:
Calamity Trigger OGs
Ragna the Bloodedge
Voice Actors: Tomokazu Sugita/Patrick Seitz
Themes: Rebellion II, Black Onslaught II (Unlimited Ragna), Under Heaven Destruction II (Vs. Jin), White Requiem II (Vs. Rachel), Nightmare Fiction II (Vs. Hazama), Black & White (Vs. Hakumen)
Drive: Soul Eater, Ragna steals health from the opponent should he hit them with his drive regardless of whether they are being hit or blocking.
Overdrive: Blood Kain Idea, increases the damage and health gain from Ragna's drive moves. They also gain different properties allowing for more potential with high damaging combos and versatility.

Still the only sane and regular person in this series, Ragna is now on the hunt for Saya after CS' events hoping to stop her from doing whatever nutty plan she's conjured up. Ragna is a offense-based character, most of his strategy is going to be based in closing distance with the opponent and getting in their face to hit them with strong combos. Ragna's got good footsies a great DP, and is pretty easy to play. Unfortunately, he suffers from needing meter to really versatile, he's very high risk although he doesn't yield great results for his trouble, he has poor health, his damage output without meter is not stellar either, and he struggles HARD against zoning characters even with movement options.

Jin Kisaragi
Voice Actors: Tetsuya Kakihara/David Vincent
Themes: Lust SIN II, Under Heaven Destruction II (Vs. Ragna), Imperial Code II (Vs. Noel), Childish Killer II (Vs. Tsubaki)
Drive: Frostbite, allows Jin to freeze his opponents allowing for combos and resets.
Overdrive: Frost End, allows Jin to freeze opponents with his sword normals, breaks the freeze count limit, and adds special properties to EX attacks.

Still a dick, Jin is also training with Jubei so his crazy sword doesn't drive him nuts. Jin's pretty well-rounded, he's got tools to deal with several situations. He can go air-to-air, close range, long range, he's got great combo versatility being able to combo easily off of basic normals, and he can even play a zoning game. He's probably one of the better characters all around for newbies/people bad at Blazblue because he's got very simple combos, good reversals, and his overdrive is one of the better ones for augmenting your combos for more damage. Jin doesn't have a lot of problems really, he's a jack-of-all trades, but does everything pretty well. He's not able to combo reliably off of his overhead unless you Rapid Cancel or Counter Hit and he doesn't have great anti-airs, is about it.

Noel Vermillion
Voice Actors: Kanako Kondo/Cristina Valenzuela
Themes: Bullet Storm II, Imperial Code II (Vs. Jin), Memory of Tears (Vs. Tsubaki)
Drive: Chain Revolver, Noel can chain drive moves together after the initial drive attack.
Overdrive: Chain Quasar, buffs Noel considerably in several way, most notably faster drive moves and drive moves gain different properties.

Now a bit more confident, Noel is travelling with BFF Makoto and the rest of Sector Seven to head to Ikaruga. Noel's a pressure based character, if you wish to use her effectively you need to be up in the opponent's face slamming them with drives and her fast normals. Noel's not particularly complicated: she's very fast, has some good damage, and is a good rushdown character. Unfortunately that's kind of all she has, there's no extra bells and whistles, you can only real play her one way. Her reversal options are pretty bad, the one projectile she has is not good either, and her mixup options are pretty unsafe.

Rachel Alucard
Voice Actors: Kana Ueda/Mela Lee
Themes: Queen of Rose II, White Requiem II (Vs. Ragna)
Drive: Silpheed, Rachel can summon wind in eight different directions, this will affect her projectiles and how she moves in the air.
Overdrive: Elflead, Sylpheed gauge recovers faster and distortion drives gain different properties.

Still being tight-lipped, Rachel is in Ikaruga waiting for the heroes to show up. Rachel's a zoning character whose tools are used for distance and trapping the opponent. Rachel's pretty good in Chronophantasma, she's got great zoning tools, anti-airs, and can lockdown the opponent pretty well. She basically rules the skies at neutral play and long range. She is not without her problems though as she has a bad wake-up game, she's extremely reliant on Sylpheed, and you have to be on the ball with her. She's rather momentum based, ONCE YOU START YOU CAN'T STOP. Naturally, she has a higher skill ceiling than other characters.

Taokaka
Voice Actors: Chiwa Saito/Philece Sampler
Themes: Catus Carnival II
Drive: Dancing Edge, torpedoes Tao towards the enemy depending on the direction you input and can cancel on block too.
Overdrive: Almost Becoming Two!, summons a doppelganger to help Tao along with many properties of attacks changing.

Still hungry, Taokaka is traveling with Ragna to Ikaruga. Tao is a very versatile character, but unlike Jin she excels in one thing, SPEED. She's able to get herself across the screen in no time flat and is able to safely pressure the opponent due to this. She's got good pokes at normal range, she's able to put out a good deal of damage, and is able to corner carry pretty easily. However, Tao suffers from having the lowest health in the game and has very defensive options, you have to be on top of the opponent a lot if you plan to play her.

Carl Clover
Voice Actors: Miyuki Sawashiro/Michelle Ruff
Themes: Marionette Purple II, X-matic (Vs. Relius)
Drive: Automaton, Carl can control his puppet sister, Ada (Nirvana), to fight with him.
Overdrive: Synchro High Speed, lessens the recovery of Nirvana's moves, gives moves new properties, and makes her faster in general including her recovery gauge.

Still parricidal, Carl goes to Ikaruga with Ada to find Relius and kill his dad. Carl's a very technical character, the nature of Automaton in general makes it so you need a large amount of planning and understanding how Nirvana works to make the most of him. To help with this Carl has great mixups, safe pressure, and he's very strange to fight at Neutral, he does technically have a second character with him, after all. Unfortunately Carl sort of suffers from some big stuff which keeps him from breaking his ceiling. He's got low life, his defensive options are poor, normals are nothing special, very reliant on Nirvana, and he requires some tight execution.

Litchi Faye-Ling
Voice Actors: Chiaki Takahashi/Lauren Landa
Themes: Oriental Flower II, Weak Executioner (Vs. Arakune)
Drive: Matenbo, Litchi switches between fighting with her staff and placing it standing on the ground.
Overdrive: The Great Wheel, makes the staff grow, constantly spins, and follows Litchi around. While in Overdrive, Litchi is always in stafless mode.

Still obsessed with Arakune, Litchi has been forcibly recruited into the NOL and will follow their orders or else Arakune dies. Litchi is a very versatile character with a vast toolset of options. She's got great offensive options (Pressure, mixup, and oki are all great), she can control space very well, and he overdrive is stupidly good. Litchi doesn't have any big problems she suffers from, the worst thing is that she's got a high learning curve as you need to be near the staff while staffless and if in staff mode her normals are slower.

Arakune
Voice Actors: Takashi Hikida/Spike Spencer
Themes: Thin RED Line II, Weak Executioner II (Vs. Litchi)
Drive: Zero Vector, Arakune increases his curse meter which lets him summon bugs to pressure the opponent.
Overdrive: Crimson Depths, all drives and specials that build curse meter will gain 100% meter on hit and 50% on block. If Overdrive is activated while opponent is cursed, the Curse will last until Overdrive ends.

Still incomprehensible, Arakune has been captured by the NOL and is a hostage for Litchi's cooperation. Arakune's a pretty paper thin character when the opponent is not cursed. His gameplan revolves around generally being evasive while trying to build curse gauge, once you get curse on the opponent though the gloves are off and you go in on them. Arakune's very dangerous when the opponent is cursed, he can keep the enemy pressured with bugs flying around the screen, he is also very mobile in the air which makes him very good at evading the opponent, and with his pokes he can jump cancel out of them safely. Arakune however has a lot of drawbacks to him that make him harder to use. His defensive options are minimal, he can't move very well on the ground, his health is below average, and he is very reliant on curse mode.

Iron Tager
Voice Actors: Kenji Nomura/Jamieson Price
Themes: MOTOR HEAD II, Sector 7 (Vs. Sector Seven)
Drive: Voltic Battler, Tager magnetizes the opponent so he can pull them in with his magnetic grabs.
Overdrive: Voltic Field, pulls the opponent towards Tager if they are magnetized and increases the electric meter faster.

Still sophisticated as hell, Tager is escorting Noel and Makoto to Ikaruga. Tager is a grappler, your goal with him is to close distance between him and the opponent and slam them into the ground with your command grabs. Tager shits out damage like nobody's business with his command grabs, his moves have big hitboxes, he's got the fastest projectile int he game, he is insanely strong even without the opponent magnetized, and his back dash has invincibility frames. It's a drat shame he has so many downsides too. Among being slow as hell, Tager can't deal with zoning at all, he's easy to hit thanks to him being so huge, and he requires a lot of understanding of the character to play him well let alone at high levels.

Bang Shishigami
Voice Actors: Tsuyoshi Koyama/Steve Kramer
Themes: Reppu II, Bang!Bang!Bigbang! (Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan Theme)
Drive: Burning Heart, Bang uses an auto-guard which follows into an attack. Each time you hit the opponent with your drive it gives you a FRKZ symbol that lets you use a specific Distortion Drive.
Overdrive: Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan, was once a Distortion Drive, is now Bang's Overdrive. It gives Bang 8-Way movement and he can cancel his dashes into specials and normals, but sacrifices his ability to guard.

Still really drat loud, Bang is looking around Ikaruga for answers about his master. Bang's a rushdown character who is very good at neutral. His mobility is fantastic as well, making it easy to close distance on the opponent and his health is pretty high. Bang's got really bad defensive options though, he doesn't have a lot to stop someone from getting in on him and even the guard portion are circumstantial at best.

Nu-13
Voice Actors: Same as Noel
Themes: Awakening the Chaos II
Drive: Sword Summoner, Nu summons swords out of thin air to barrage the opponent.
Overdrive: Unlimited Drive, all drive moves will summon two swords, special moves are not dependant on what mode she's in, and several other effects.

Now back with a vengeance, Nu is an attack dog for Terumi that is hoping to fight Ragna once again. Nu is a really strong zoning character that not a lot of characters can effectively deal with. She's gained a mode change which allows her to switch between zoning and Lambda's more offensive style from CS. Nu's got very few weaknesses and most of them are dependent upon player knowledge than any downfall of the character, her only big problems are her low health and that she needs to use the system mechanics if she wants to escape pressure.

Hakumen
Voice Actors: Same as Jin
Themes: SUSANOOH II, Black & White (Vs. Ragna), in JUSTICE (Vs. Izayoi), SIX-HEROES (Vs. Six Heroes)
Drive: Zanshin, Hakumen projects shields which let him counter enemy attacks.
Overdrive: Kishin, increases the recharge rate of Magatama and lets him special cancel his D moves.

Still a pretty cool dude, Hakumen walks his own path after having to deal with Rachel and Kokonoe's bullshit. Hakumen is a very methodical character, you play him by keeping enough distance with the opponent that they can't get in, but still are close enough to out footsie them and possibly catch them off guard with a counter. Hakumen is excellent in Chronophantasma with his high health, good normals, resets, and with meter his damage output is nuts. Hakumen's cons are his poor mobility and his damage without meter being low, his pros more than make up for his cons though.

Continuum Shift Clean Up Crew
Hazama
Voice Actors: Yuichi Nakamura/Doug Erholtz
Themes: Gluttony Fang II, Endless Despair II (Unlimited Hazama), Nightmare Fiction II (Vs. Ragna), SIX-HEROES (Vs. Six Heroes)
Drive: Ouroboros, Hazama tosses a chain with the shape of a snake at the opponent which allows him to pull himself towards them or pull them towards him.
Overdrive: Jörmungandr, the limit on his chains are released, his chains get double damage, and a life-leeching ring appears around him that will steal the opponent's health should they be in it.

Still an rear end in a top hat, Hazama is awaiting Saya's plan to come to a head and revived Nu-13. Hazama is a zoning character, but his zoning is meant to get him in for rushdown rather than keep the opponent away. Hazama's Ouroboros chains are FAST, they can cover the screen quickly and should he hit the opponent (Even on block) he can pull himself in quickly and get to work. His movement options with Ouroboros are ridiculous, his mixup game is solid, and he's even got good damage. Hazama doesn't have a lot of problems, about the worst things about him is he has no meterless reversals and his mid-range pokes are not stellar either.

Tsubaki Yayoi
Voice Actors: Asami Imai/Julie Ann Taylor
Themes: Condemnation Wings II, Memory of Tears II (Vs. Noel), Childish Killer II (Vs. Jin)
Drive: Install, Tsubaki charges up her install meter which makes her D attacks stronger.
Overdrive: Second Install, Tsubaki continuously gains install meter without charging.

Now blind as a bat, Tsubaki is working under the command of Saya while also questioning what justice is. Tsubaki's a pretty weird offensive character, in that you are meant to put down the opponent with pressure, but you also have to keep focus on your charges. Tsubaki relies quite a bit on Install, she's able charge cancel which lends you some wiggle room with pressure, her Mugen DD gives her some really damaging combos, and her Overdrive is the longest one in the game, allowing her to even slow down the rate that Mugen drains install meter. Her problems however are the aforementioned reliance on Install, she has a bad air to air game, her damage is very mediocre, and she's not able to rely on a lot of complex combos as some of them are character specific.

Mu-12
Voice Actors: Same as Noel
Themes: Sword of Doom II
Drive: Steins Gunner, Mu projects nodes (Steins) at different locations and after a set period of time they will fire.
Overdrive: Steins Geyser, the Steins on the screen stay up until the overdrive ends and fire constantly,.

Now in control of her mind, Noel accepts that she and Mu are the same person and gains control of that side of her. Mu is a character a zoning character whose main goal is to use her Steins for pressure and setting up combos. She's plenty of great tools on all fronts, her damage is good, she's got a nice DP, and her zoning game allows to basically control the fight. The problems with Mu however is that since Steins are a big part of playing her, you need to understand them in and out. If you don't know how to play a neutral game well, she can be shut down very easily. If you throw up Steins recklessly they can interrupt combos and give your opponent a chance to get away, her health is low, and she is very matchup specific in what she can take advantage of.

Makoto Nanaya
Voice Actors: Tomomi Isomura/Cindy Robinson
Themes: Alexandrite II, Sector 7 (Vs. Sector Seven)
Drive: Impact, Makoto's drive attacks allow for charges where you hold the attack while a meter flows between 1-3, 1 of course being the least damaging and impacting and 3 being a powerful attack that floors your opponent.
Overdrive: Galaxian Impact, all of Makoto's drive moves automatically become Level 3 along with powers to several normals and specials.

Still a friendship nut, Makoto is traveling with Noel to Ikaruga. Makoto is a very simple offensive character. You go in, you do the punches, you get the damage, you might win the fight if you do enough of the punches. Her damage is pretty good, her defensive options are fine, and if you've got the opponent in the corner you can get some combos on them on wake up. Makoto's got nothing at long range though, she can't deal with zoners or mobile characters well, and you have to know how to fight at neutral if you want to use her to the best of her ability.

Valkenhayn R. Hellsing
Voice Actors: Motomu Kiyokawa/Doug Stone
Themes: Howling Moon II, Dissonance (Vs. Relius), SIX-HEROES (Vs. Six Heroes)
Drive: Wehrwolf, Valk transforms into his wolf form that has its own different moves and specials.
Overdrive: Endlos Wolf, Valk gets unlimited wolf meter for the duration of Overdrive and Wolf moves get faster startup.

Still a rad old guy, Valkenhayn, as always, is assisting Rachel in her goals as her butler. Valkenhayn is pretty drat good in Chronophantasma, what with wolf form enabling him to leap around the screen. His normals are great, he can get good combos off his hit confirms, and his neutral game is really good. Valkenhayn's only problems are he needs Wolf form to move around the screen well which make him harder to use than other rushdown characters and his defense options are lacking too.

Platinum the Trinity
Voice Actors: Aoi Yuki/Laura Bailey
Themes: Active Angel II, SIX-HEROES (Vs. Six Heroes)
Drive: Magical Symphony, Platinum can equip random items to use in combat.
Overdrive: Magical Heart Catch, gives Platinum infinite of whatever she happens to be holding.

Still the most terrifying creation of this series, Platinum is on her way to Ikaruga with Bang. Platinum's a very strange character in that due to the nature of her drive, how good she is depends on whatever item she is holding. The Piko Hammer is great to get due to its ability to guard crush. Bat's good for reversals, but is easy to jump over. Magical Cat Hammer has great poke range. Magical Frying Pan is only good for combos. Magical Missiles are good to get in on your opponent. Bombs are okay for wakeup and anti-air, and Present Box is a very obvious trap. To go with her items, Platinum's got good mobility and her variation with her drive can go a long way. Unfortunately, it's entirely due to how situational it can get that stops her from being super good, her defensive options suck, and her damage is bad.

Relius Clover
Voice Actors: Junichi Suwabe/Travis Willingham
Themes: Plastic Night II, X-matic II (Vs. Carl), Dissonance (Vs. Valkenhayn)
Drive: Detonator, Relius controls his puppet wife, Ignis, to fight alongside him.
Overdrive: Maxima Dance, increases the rate that the Ignis gauge recovers.

Still dad of the year, Relius is using Litchi as his assistant while waiting for Saya's plans to come to fruition. Relius is straight up a character out of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighter. Ignis follows Relius wherever he goes and acts as a separate character with its own attacks and hitbox. Thanks to this Relius is able to put ridiculous pressure on the opponent, do safe mix ups, control space well, and have fabulous damage output. However, if that little meter runs out then Relius is significantly more vulnerable, his pressure is weaker, and he has no real meterless reversal options.

Chronophantasma Newbies
Amane Nishiki
Voice Actors: Akira Ishida/Yuri Lowenthal
Themes: BUSIN
Drive: Spiral, Amane turns his cloth into a drill and the more the drive is used the higher the level can get, the maximum is 3 levels.
Overdrive: Cyclone, Spiral Gauge rapidly increases to Level 3.

A traveling thespian, Amane goes about the countryside seeking strapping young men to become a part of his troupe. Amane is the first Blazblue character whose gameplay style really revolves around trying to gently caress the opponent if they are on defense. Amane does great chip damage with Spiral especially at Level 3, he's got good attack range with his C and D normals, and has a solid anti-air. Amane is not very well equipped to actually hurt opponents effectively though. His defensive options are lacking, his health and combo damage are lower than average, and he depends so much on space that anything less than a good understanding of him is not going to make up for his faults.

Bullet
Voice Actors: Toa Yukinari/Erin Fitzgerald
Themes: Spirit of Fire
Drive: Lock-On, by holding the drive button near the opponent, Bullet can lock-on to an opponent and launch herself at them. If she lands a hit with her drive she gains a Heat Up level, which effect many of her moves, the lowest level for Heat up is 0 and the highest is 2.
Overdrive: Heat the Beat, Bullet immediately gains a level when she activates her overdrive. During overdrive the Heat Up meter freezes and after overdrive ends she keeps all of her Heat Up levels and the timer for Heat Up resets.

A mercenary, Bullet is on a crusade against Sector Seven due to an incident in the past that led to her squad mates being killed. Bullet is a weird combination of both rushdown and grappler playstyles. She's got decent enough tools to deal with most situations, strong pressure at close range, good combos that don't even need Heat Up, drives provide good mobility, she's actually pretty easy to learn. She's got really bad mobility though when not using her drive, even though she's got several tools she still struggles at long range so she can only perform effectively at close range, her defensive options are poor, her grabs are blockable, and her high damage combos require Heat Up levels.

Azrael
Voice Actors: Hiroki Yasumoto/D.C. Douglas
Themes: The Tyrant, Sector 7 (Vs. Sector Seven)
Drive: The Terror, Azrael reveals weakpoints on the opponent where moves get different properties which allow for a host of offensive options.
Overdrive: Mind Colosseo, Azrael's drive attacks reveal weakpoints even on block, weakpoints are not used up when you hit opponent with weak point moves, and weak points will not disappear over time so long as the Overdrive remains active.

A member of Sector Seven, Azrael loves to fight and spends his time looking for other strong opponents who can match up to his strength. If you want to play Azrael, I must impose a question on you. Do you like big dudes? DO YOU LIKE BIG DUDES? DO. YOU. LIKE. BIG. DUDES? If so, Azrael is your man. He's got good health, his normal damage is good and that's before even mentioning weak points, with weak points his damage is nuts, Growler Field is an amazing tool he can use against zoners, he is deceptively fast (Read: Faster than slow characters normally are), and thanks to Growler, his health, and back dash he has good defense options. His problems are since he's big he has a bigger hitbox than most characters, bursting really hinders his gameplan of slapping weak points on opponents, and he has some pretty bad matchups against stronger zoners, mobile characters, and even Tager and Hakumen.

Izayoi
Voice Actors: Same as Tsubaki
Themes: Justice Sword, in JUSTICE (Vs. Hakumen)
Drive: Scarlet Justice, Izayoi enters an alternate mode called Gain Art, which gives her new dashes, C normals, and special moves. Using moves in Gain Art requires stock in the Zero Weave gauge though, which are gained through using specials in normal mode. Stock is gained regardless of hit (Gain 2 stocks) or block (1 stock).
Overdrive: Freedom Justice, stocks are constantly generated without the need of special moves in normal mode. Her existing Gain Art specials are also more powerful.

The true form of Tsubaki's weapon, only seeks to attain true justice and will punish all crimes. Izayoi is heavily reliant on stocks and Gain Art. With Gain Art, she has amazing pressure and mix ups, her Hover Dash can make unique options, her range and anti-air options are good, and even in Normal Mode she's got decent projectiles and mid-range. Due to her being so reliant on stocks though, she will need them a lot, any great options you can create are done mostly with Gain Art and without Gain Art, she's alright, but not good enough to really outdo other characters since she's so bad at dealing with pressure and wake up.

Kagura Mutsuki
Voice Actors: Keiji Fujiwara/Grant George
Themes: Black Aggression
Drive: Black Gale, Kagura can enter any of three stances with their moves that can be chained together.
Overdrive: Vehemence Edge, removes the cooldown of stance follow ups so you can chain them together easily.

A General-ranked soldier of the NOL, Kaugra is seeking to overthrow the NOL so his master's son can reform it. Kagura is a stance character who is really slower than he should be. Kagura's health and damage are high, some moves have super armor, his normals are loving huge, and his stance cancels with proper use can lead to some tricky stuff. Unfortunately it is all wasted as Kagura is so drat slow. His mobility sucks, his fastest pokes have terrible range, he's an even more momentum based character in Rachel, stopping could actually cost you the match with him, he has the worst mid-range game, and he struggles HARD against fast characters. He's not the slowest in the game, but he's just slow enough for every pro to be outweighed by his cons.

Yuki Terumi
Voice Actors: Same as Hazama
Themes: Endless Despair II, SIX-HEROES
Drive: Force Eater, Terumi's drive moves all gain extra meter on hit and block which allow for more distortion drives, rapid cancels, and crush triggers.
Overdrive: Nightmare Reaper, drive attacks gain more meter, damage, bigger hitboxes, and drain opponent's meter.

Pulled from the past by Trinity, Terumi is in the future causing all sorts of chaos. Terumi is a character that lives and dies by his meter. With meter he has so many options and benefits such as more Distortion Drives (Which he has more of than special moves), Rapid Cancels, and Crush Triggers. On top of that the dude is able to cover ground very easily, his pressure is strong, and with meter he can play defensively pretty well. He's even got a super good Astral Finish that can combo off of even the most basic poo poo and with his meter gain it is very practical to do. So he seems like a top tier character, right? Wrong. Terumi is crippled without meter; he cannot defend himself very well and his damage is not very good. Couple this with the fact he has no standing overhead (his only overhead is an air one), his low health, and he's very vulnerable to most opponents and can have a tough time getting in.

Kokonoe
Voice Actors: Chie Matsura/Julie Ann Taylor
Themes: Science Fiction, Sector 7 (Vs. Sector Seven)
Drive: Graviton, Kokonoe can place a Graviton and it will suck in opponents and objects.
Overdrive: Graviton Rage, decreases the consumption of the Graviton gauge and increases the recovery of said gauge.

Just watch the video.

Those are a lot of characters, what's going on with the story? The last game had a 300-year long story because it had all of those characters.

Okay, so the story mode in Chronophantasma is different from the previous games in that it's split into three different factions, rather than every character get an individual story. You follow Sector Seven, the NOL, and the Six-Heroes, which all play a part in the story and completing all of them unlocks the true ending. You have no dedicated character in any of these, it's just whoever is appropriate at the moment. There are still joke endings and choices you can make, but now the story is significantly more linear and you get less view points. On the upside, it's shorter and the game is no longer half-fighting game, half-visual novel.

So is every character unlocked from the start? What are all of the unlockables?

There is one unlockable character. To unlock Kagura you have to beat the story mode, yes that is real. Beating the story mode also unlocks a mode where you can fight the game's boss (Take-Mikazuchi)with any character. There's also a pay to unlock thing with Kagura too like Mu in CS. So if you want Kagura, but don't want to spend 30 hours reading text (Alternatively spend 5 hours trying to skip it all) then you can spend about 3 bucks to unlock him. There is also an in-game store which lets you unlock gallery items and extra colors for in-game currency. Unlimited Characters are of course back, but since Extend was way too helpful in how you obtained them, CP has gone back to the CS model of unlocking Unlimited Characters.

Although instead of beating loving Score Attack this time, you must beat any route of Unlimited Mars mode, of which there are four routes. For those unaware, Unlimited Mars mode is a mode where every character you fight is in Unlimited Mode and has ungodly smart AI. So combine the ridiculous nature of Unlimited characters with an AI that knows all of what the characters can do. Yes, Unlimited Mars mode loving sucks, how did you guess? You can also (Again like CS) pay to unlock Unlimited Characters. Get to work, Mars needs winnin'.

Speaking of buying things, is there DLC?

Yes, there is a bit of it. Half of the colors for one character can be unlocked through the gallery, all of the remaining colors must be purchased on the PSN store. There are also DLC announcers, which is every character's VA in the game announcing everything. It is the Japanese VAs though, so expect a lot of bad English unless Aksys actually decided for once to get the English VAs in on this (They most likely did not). On top of this there are two DLC characters, Terumi and Kokonoe. Terumi you can get for free by pre-ordering the game and Kokonoe you must pay for. Pay to win, indeed.

The PSP version of Continuum Shift II had two extra stories in it, will Vita CP have anything like that?

Yes. If you buy the Vita version of Chronophantasma, you will get an extra story that follows that characters as they... have fun at the beach.

Gotta admit though, I do like baggy tracksuit Ragna, it works. The pasted heads onto the bodies though, not so much.

Any special editions?

Oh yeah, that.

Standard Edition is 50 bucks, pre-order gets you Terumi.
Limited Edition is 80 bucks and gets you all of this...

We're gonna need a PSN list.

There will be a balance patch in March, I'm assuming consoles will get it pretty soon too.

Looking forward to post patch Bullet and Kokonoe, mainly so I can stop drowning in both my own and everyone else's tears respectively.

I believe they said the balance patch will drop for consoles in May, I'll have to double check on that though.

Kagura changes sound kind of weird, but pretty good in general. No more 6A chain combos is ugly but the changes to his drives sound good. Unfortunately it will not fix my biggest frustration with the character, that being the lovely input buffer giving you fireballs even when you input stuff like, [1] 6 6 (pause) 1A.

Also including a Steam link in the OP is pretty mean I gotta say.

Great OP, I can't wait for the new patch, myself, even if it doesn't solve some of Terumi's bigger problems. Why on earth ASW thinks superflsh mixups, especially reactable ones, are ever a good idea. Or an anti-air chain super for that matter.

(Just give us a standing overhead. And/or make the command grab not awful shitgarbage.)

Edit: Also, as great as that Kokonoe video is, it doesn't show off the good ol' black hole reset setups:

Is there an easy way to do Hazama's awful midscreen "sweep, stance, dash, flash snake, dash, jab" combos? That second dash is so tight, it feels like you have maybe a frame or two of leniency. Off of his command grab or against some characters (relius and I assume others but I haven't tested it) you can omit it, which makes it way easier, but in most situations you need that tiny stutter-step. Its such a pain, but it adds, like, 1.3k damage so I feel obligated to learn it.

So, apparently ASW is actually rolling out the patchlist for the March patch in stages. Here's part 2, for Tao, Tager, Arakune, Litchi, and Bang: http://www.famitsu.com/matome/bbcp/tyousei2.html

I can't make heads or tails of most of it, and google translate isn't helping much. But apparently Litchi players are pretty upset over her changes. 4B is now like -12 on block :wtc:

Edit: And it's all translated now: http://pastebin.com/3t02Gqgg

So I've heard Litchi's staff does not count as a projectile, but apparently Ragna's drives do? So Growler can't stop a thing that flies at it from across the screen, but oh man Ragna used 5D and Azrael just got a projectile.

I've been practicing on CS:E on vita and the one thing really holding me back is the fact that my left thumb isn't fast enough to dash. Is there some trick to the double-tap timing besides "really fast"? I can sometimes air dash, but not consistently.

You can kind of cheat it if you want by learning how to instant air dash. That is done by jumping forward (or backwards) returning the stick or Dpad to neutral and then pressing just forward or backwards again. This might make your air offense a little predictable but it's a good skill to develop. Dash timing doesn't have to be terribly fast in BB mercifully.

Bad news: this game isn't coming out on PSN this week.

Kind of good news: There will be a pre-order offer up on Tuesday at a discounted price of $44.99, or $40.49 if you have PS+, source. *update* Since the PS+ offer is going away next week, I'm guessing this is when the pre-order offer will also go away and the PS3 download version will most likely come out next week.

Another update: Yup, PS3 download version is coming next week, confirmed by Aksys:

Holy poo poo we have a thread for this game. I know most of these posts are over a month old but in case that during that month these burning questions have never left the minds of those who asked:

Litchi's staff indeed counts as a projectile and can be Growler'ed. It's a big problem Litchi has when doing oki actually.

My PSN is Relambrien just like my username here, so add me if you want to play matches. I only have the imported version right now, but I think that doesn't matter as far as online play goes? Anyway, I'm a fairly decent Litchi main and can't play any other character even a little bit.

Radical, playing Azrael is interesting though. He doesn't seem to actually chain into anything, but he's a pretty cool character for links and like has a lot of neat stuff. A lot of stuff just clicks with him after messing around with him a bit.

Also PSN is DevilKingBaal, I main Ragna and sub Relius. Am now practicing Azrael and Terumi too. I am offense game scumbag and bad.

Captain Baal
Oct 23, 2010

Of course there's the story mode, although unlike previous games it's no longer structured by characters, but factions now. It follows either Sector Seven, NOL, or the Six Heroes followed by a True Ending for beating them all. There's more Teach Me Miss Litchi segments, in the actual gameplay modes Abyss, Score Attack and Unlimited Mars all return. The only real change is that Unlimited Mars now has four different routes you can play through. Then there's the in game story which lets you acquire currency to buy stuff.

That's the stuff for like, single player.

Abyss is a lot different now, too. Instead of stats carrying through just one 'dungeon', they're now permanently attached to your character, and the skills list has been drastically increased with all sorts of fun stuff. By the time I tackled the final dungeon, my Terumi was getting over 100 heat per 5D and could outrace the heat cooldown post rapid/super, allowing for some hilarious combos.

It's pretty fun.
