Board games tend to have most of everyone's resources or whatever out in the open whereas card games you generally keep your hand hidden.

I don't know which Civilization board game I played but it seemed like a very old one. A lot of it was tedious and took forever but I really liked the trading mechanic, you had to trade at least three cards at a time but you only had to tell the truth about two of them.
