GODDAMN I AM A HUGE MORON! WITH A JETPLANE OF STUPID!
SO I picked this up yesterday and I really have to say I like it.

It maps out well to my new X55, the flight model is pretty realistic (too realistic sometimes, loving engine torque on nose down has made me go in to flat spins at full throttle) and the dog fighting is pretty intense at times. This game is literally the opposite of War Thunder, nothing feels half-assed or randomly biased, the handling is great and poo poo just feels polished.

Just wish they'd put more planes on Steam, I wanna try a campaign as a scout bomber and none of them seem to be on Steam. But it was late when I looked so maybe I just didn't see them. Either way, great thread and thanks for pointing out the game and the indie deal for it

Yup, and that DLC comes with the ridiculous IndieGala bundle, so assuming you got it there, you should have it!

I've always used this and it works perfectly well IMO. I can't imagine playing this or IL-2 without head tracking.

I installed FaceTrackNoIR and jumped right into the game for a test flight and holy poo poo. Couldn't find a position that worked, and also apparently it had the pitch, yaw, and roll axes inverted from what I would want because my Webcam flips the image horizontally or something. As a neat side effect, this will improve my posture because my slouch makes me feel like a tiny old woman who can't see over the instrument cluster! :shobon:

I inverted the rotationals and it's much better, although aligning my view to my sights is a bitch...is there a way I can assaign a button to ignore my tracking and snap to a down-the-sights view?

That's the clip that comes with the TrackIR 5.

Here's a ghetto version - http://www.free-track.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=466

edit: The link is pretty much people rolling their own tracking, but at the base of the page you'll see someone's impression using bulldog clips and reflective tape.

Let me know if you need the dimensions from a clip.

I'm not certain that the distance between the reflectors is entirely necessary, and it's looking for the geometry, but YMMV.

More than anything right now I want to figure out how to adjust your view orientation in the gunner view.

Half the time the sights end up in a random corner of the screen and are barely usable, and the normal view controls don't seem to do anything.

"T" to man the turret, and shift-T (or maybe it's control-T) to align the gunsights to your view.

Shift T makes you get all up on the sight. Sometimes it acts weird and puts it somewhere else. If you just go to the normal t control, you should be able to still use the view controls to live yourself up better.

That's the thing, it wouldn't align to the center of my view, rather to some corner of the screen. Occasionally the view axis for the gunners might be at some sort of skewed angle, too.

That said that might've been my game being weird. I've been trying to get screenshots and I can't seem to get it to happen again.

There are only two (soonish to be three) planes currently in the game that are unavailable via Steam. Unfortunately, one of the two is the Sopwith Strutter. Assuming by "Scout bomber" you mean a single-seat fighter/bomber, it kind of fits your description since it comes in two flavors, the two-seater Strutter and the Strutter B, which converts the observer seat into a bomb-bay.

That said, a few of the two-seaters are frequently used for offensive roles as opposed to just recon/spotting. The Halberstadt CL is actually far more a ground-attack aircraft and long-range escort fighter than a reconnaissance two-seater. Most of my sorties have been ground attack with a handful of medium-altitude (ineffective) level bombing thrown in.

So if anyone was wondering, I got this done pretty easily. I just emailed their support with my issue and they sent an email back pretty quickly asking me to provide the accounts license key, its current email and the email I wanted it moved to. I was then able to make a new steam account using the first accounts original email address. All done in probably 12 hours or so.

If you duplicate a binding, a little square icon or something appears on the binding after you apply it. Hovering over it will tell you what the duplicate is.

Sopwith Pups are basically an earlier version of the Camel and are every bit as agile and dangerous as their successor. In fact, from glancing at the official forums, they're apparently quite popular for multiplayer even against the later war aircraft. Apparently a skilled human pilot can do some pretty crazy moves with the Pup and Camel by taking advantage of how easy to force into a spin/stall it is. They can perform a very reliable and recoverable snap roll too.

Get your kite into the air, and hit 'P' to pause, then 'esc' and options. Clicking on an empty box in the controls will allow you to set the axis, and just move the axis that you want.

It's not a bad system, it's just figuring out what the controls actually do. Also some joystick buttons will NOT map, so last nights query about recharging/cocking the guns was after I'd mapped the button to my HOTAS, but pressing it just didn't work.

As Shine says, there's a little layered square turns up if you have a conflict. Hover over that and it'll tell you what it's conflicting with.

Now go buy IL-2 and bind those controls. :) :)

I've resolved most of my joystick issues* so I'd be up for gotha crashingracing at that time.

*by most I mean that I unplugged the x45 throttle quadrant and am just using the stick itself without any analog rudder. I also pissed around with the joystick curves until I got something resembling stable flight.

I decided to check out some mods for the sp of this game and so far I'm pretty pleased with them. The campaign generator mod is quite nice and reminds me of the silent hunter 3 modding scene which I don't think I could play sh3 without these days. There's a fair amount of mod wonk but not too much for me so far and the adjustable options help. I also grabbed an ai mod which helps the bots feel a bit more lifelike, and less in love with that near-upside down fishtail aggressive turn they do that costs them tons of altitude. I'm a little disappointed that the modded maximum difficulty ai in a foker dvii f I tested the mod with still couldn't beat me in my sopwith triplane which it should outclass but it was a pretty decent fight. The ai still has the quirk of performing much worse on the deck than high in the air, but it took longer to get there without that weird turn. I would still love to see the ai use some classic moves like loops and chandelles to keep things lively but that's probably beyond the realm of modding. The game feels a good bit more authentic with the career, ai and realism mods all together and overall I can recommend them if you're playing the sp.

I hated it at first but I am in love with the Dr.I. The rotary engine takes getting used to, but learning to fly it is pretty rewarding. Normally I'd prefer the Albatros or something but it seems really tame compared to the Dr.I, which means it's outclassed by planes such as the Pup and Camel.
