"All right fine. We'll play along. As long as we get to try those simulators soon! Also we could really use a second tv. I'm not being selfish. If we only have one, Jenna will monopolize it to play her show over and over and then the rest of us will all be quoting it at you until you wish your head would explode. Here I'll give you back to Rosa." Without bothering to say good bye, she hands the phone back and goes into the kitchen to get a drink.

Fate: 1/2

More stupid drama passes as Sebastian leafs through The Complete Sherlock Holmes. He never did get a chance to read all of it, only getting Sherlock's various adventures in bits and pieces. So far things have been...uneventful at the clubs. Sebastian is still finding it hard to be his old charismatic self, as usual. A shame really. He was hoping to make a good impression on Rosalie, in order to reinforce a good impression with the Captain. It was a rather classic networking attempt, but with the way this team is going it will fail rather spectacularly anyways. It certainly doesn't help that he feels like he's shooting himself in the foot.

Then the question of dinner came up, and Sebastian raised his head. "Do you guys honestly think I would be so sloppy to let even a chance of the debacle that happened in Home Economics ruin tonight with burnt food and soggy vegetables?"

"I already ordered 15 minutes ago."

Sebastian looks down at his book again. "It's late...b-but it's good barbeque."

Ant raises a single finger over the couch he's sitting on, toward the general direction of the rest of the house.

"Love you too, Liza."

Deep down, he's thankful that none of them are actually working on dinner. Today showed them just how terrible they were at it, despite their qualifications in other areas. It's just another reminder of why they're here. You have to give them a chance to grow up. Somewhere, he knows that. Deep down among all the flotsam and jetsam of his "military" career. How can you expect children to go to school and tend to the home when you've got them running out and fighting off massive creatures that want to end our species? Ant can feel the onset of a nervous episode. He tamps it down as hard as he can, hoping to stem it off. Nobody picks up on the faster breathing, the suddenly faraway eyes. He stares right through his book for a moment before he comes back to reality.

"So where'd you order from? I've heard that the Magic Grill is the best around here."

You've survived something far scarier than facing horrors from beyond; the first day of school. The evening passes to night as you decompress, relax, and enjoy being alive.

No one passed all the tests, so no one gets the benny I was planning on. What you do get is 300xp, and a month of free time you can use with the Time Management system.

ONE MONTH LATER

"All systems nominal. Prepare for the synchronization test." Han oversees a group of technicians working at consoles in a glass box overlooking a rack of Test Plugs. "Engage the remote link to the Units, Kurosawa." The synchronization begins, and you can feel a pins and needles sensation spreading; it's synchronisation, Jim, but not as you know it. Kurosawa pulls up a graph showing the current synchronisation of the pilots. "Synchronization commencing... There's some unusual fluctuation in Elizabeth's connection but it's well within acceptable limits. Continuing."

The lights flicker as there's a momentary hiccup in the power.

"What kind of fluctuation?" Elizabeth not-quite demands. "They better not have messed up my Unit 04!"

Up until this point she's been pretty bored with the test. An entire month without a new Angel. It almost made going to school worthwhile, just to have something to do. Almost. Liza had been going through an average of a club a week so far, starting with kendo and most recently lacrosse, without finding one that was both enough of a challenge to hold her attention and not terminally stupid. It had been a useful proxy for training, at least.

Junko Kurosawa

A month had gone by without any strange occurrence, it made Junko wonder why she was here in the first place. It seems like that she would never get her chance to show her supposed talent. “Well it’s not all that bad; at least I’m kinda fitting in.” She felt like she had made at few friends at the book club, most notably Rose, but God knows if this was reciprocal. In most other situations though she reverted to her old self; a shadow.

Over the past month of practice she had gotten more used to the EVA. She felt comforted for some reason inside the machine, but she didn’t know why. A few she heard the name Kurosawa being called out, clearly not at her though. Junko laughed to herself, entertaining the thought that she and that person were related. But common sense told her that it as unlikely, it was as likely as being related to that old filmmaker, whatever his name was.

Today like most days she had woken up depressed and lethargic, but after the usual few hours it had subsided and she was able to act her role as a fully functioning teenager (if there is such a thing). Of course she probably would not even be able to wake up if it weren’t for Antoine... and the rest.

***

Junko giggled to herself at Antoine’s response, once again covering her mouth as was her habit. The flicker of the lights made her worry a bit though; surely the staff had everything under control though.

The Bryants

Training starts not long after your first day of school. For the most part, the training isn't really as exciting as it could be. The simulation runs the captain sends you through have a lot more emphasis on the basics of battlefield procedure than they do on actually killing things. You're even given homework. One day you get home to find a pile of US Army Training Manuals stacked up on the kitchen table, with a note detailing how you're expected to start reading them and write book reports describing which parts of them do and do not apply to Evangelion combat.

It doesn't take too long for Rose to really open up to you guys. She spends most afternoons hanging around your apartment before heading downstairs to her own place to have dinner with her dad. Every once in a while, at her suggestion, they both come over and actually cook a Decent Meal for everyone to eat. While over, the captain usually checks upon everything in the apartment to make sure you all haven't somehow descended into unsupervised teenage squalor.

Apart from that, the captain's weekdays are mostly devoted to managerial humdrum. Unlike most people at NERV, however, he rarely puts in any extra work hours. While others might spend late evenings or even all-nighters on some important thing in case an Angel shows up tomorrow, Bryant usually clocks out right at five. It gives him plenty of time to take care of his daughter, and to a lesser extent his six other children, but it also leaves a steady pile of paperwork waiting on his desk to be done the next day.

---

"It's fine," the captain chimes in over the radio. "Within acceptable limits. You don't take apart a gun just because it's got a little bit of dirt on it. We continue as planned."

A whole month with these people. All things told, it didn't go quite as bad as his aristocratic mind thought it would. I mean, Liza and Jenna didn't kill anyone for one thing. Sebastian spent his time flipping through books and working everyone in the Wargaming club. At least there is some place he can use his knowledge of strategy.

Then the training began. Quite frankly, he was used to studying training manuals, although writing reports on Evangelion combat was something new. He quite enjoyed the intellectual stimulus such things provided, and his increasing familiarity with his Evangelion unit provided much to work with. Still, there was something...disturbing about the unit. As he became more familiar with it, he came to notice this imposing feeling, as though the cockpit were closing in around him. Sometimes, when it was particularly bad, it almost felt like the back of his head was being pushed forward.

"20 minutes, half an hour at most, Elizabeth," Han replies. "Stage 1 nerve fuses engaged..." Kurosawa continues studying the minutiae of the test when the lights flicker again, this time more violently. Han reaches over to the intercom. "Engineering, is everything alright down there? We're having some power issues-" The sirens start going off, and Engineering's response is cut off by Commander Koizumi. "THE MAGI JUST PICKED UP AN ANGELIC SIGNATURE RIGHT HERE IN THE GEOFR-" Her voice hazes out in a rush of static, and the lights once more flicker, and stay intermittent. "Aborting the test...the network's overloaded!" The test pods slowly, slowly start draining the LCL as the link with your Evangelions is cut.

Suddenly, darkness. There's a terrible pressure. Your head's going to explode. You're so lonely; did you think that or was it someone else no one respects you these kids don't know hardship i wish things were more disciplined

You slowly come to, head pounding. The emergency lighting's casting long reddish shadows, and your pod is half drained; it's hard to tell if you were physically injured or not because of all the LCL. Inside the control booth, the glass is cracked and broken and the computer bank is in ruins. The intercom appears to work; Kurosawa is slumped forward over the terminal, and Han's nowhere to be found. The door is dented and nonfunctional, but it's been pried open enough that you're not trapped. The emergency sirens (while hardly doing your headache any favours) sound off, like a baleful growl. Clearly whatever happened hit hard.

There's a moment of panic as Ant finds himself waking up, half-submerged in LCL fluid. Luckily, he realizes quickly that the liquid is ice cold and not intent on cooking him alive. The hatch is a bitch to get open without power, but he keeps at it until the wheel spins and the locks retract. At some point, Ant's nose must have started bleeding from the pressure. He wipes the dried blood from his face and blows out whatever clot is left in there.

"Yes, and wanting to continue being alive. Maybe keep it down? Whatever did this doesn't sound like it's too far away."

Captain Bryant, Antoine

The good news is there's a pulse. The bad news is her injuries look pretty bad; there's blood everywhere, and the right side of her face is covered in lacerations and bruises. Also, you don't think arms are supposed to move like that. She needs treatment, and soon.

You've got bigger things to worry about though; for one you need to see what other damage was done, you need to see who else survived and oh yeah what the gently caress just happened. You're going to need to work your way towards the Command Center and then the Evangelion Cages, if what happened was an Angel. You could also look for a first aid station nearby; NERV HQ has them at regular intervals in the hallways. You'd need to spend time finding one and then bringing the goods back, though.

I'd like to say this is a democracy but ahahah no Bryant's word goes. I encourage him to at least humour the kids though. :v:

You set off down the corridor, searching for a medical station that hasn't already been picked clean. Asides from the general state of disarray and the total absence of other personnel, there's nothing out of the ordinary. The lights are out here and there, but there's no broken cables to worry about at least, and the emergency lights cover the darker spots with a reddish glow that's enough to keep you from bumping into things.
You need to head down a level, so you head to the stairs only to find that they're blocked by rubble. The elevator nearby is broken, but the doors could be forced, and there's probably a service ladder or something in there. Or you could try to find another way around, but that could waste time, which you may not have much of.

It's a Strength test at -20 to open the doors by hand, or you could try to find a crowbar or an explosive. Alternatively, you can chance the wasted time and try to find another path.
