I love how 10 will be chirping happily and all of a sudden he quiets down and his eyes start to slowly close... then he falls over asleep for a few seconds before getting back up and resuming chirping. :3:

Not in the traditional way by looking in their vents--that takes years of experience. I go more by behavior once they get a bit older. Certain breeds you can also get an idea by the length of the wing feathers, and with others their feathers will be one color for males, another for females (those are called Sex Links).
