Two chicks have now hatched! The first was egg 10 (on the left, now named "Cattywampus"). The second was the smaller egg 3 (on the right, now known as "Mailbox"). The two eggs in front (eggs 5 and 11) have pipped.

Nothing yet from the three green eggs in the back but VS said they were peeping. The green eggs aren't due to hatch until Saturday. These other eggs are hatching early.

The naming will commence very soon. VS and 12_String's kid will pull the names out of a hat.

Yes, but she's still big. She is at least part Giant Cochin, if not all Giant Cochin--and they are freakin' huge. I'll be able to tell her parentage better as she gets older.

Number 11 had been quiet for a while (the egg pipped 11 hours ago), so VS was just checking the egg. As soon as VS picked up the egg, the chick started yelling at her. So, the egg seems okay. VS will keep a close eye on 11.

VS broke open the shell a bit to help the chick out, but she wants the chick to finish on its own.

As far as using a broody hen for mama, none of the chicks will care if they know her or not--except maybe Pumpkin, the two week old chick. She's old enough that either she may reject having a mother or the broody may reject her, no way to tell without just giving it a go.

If it happens that way, we'll have to do without a broody hen--it's got to be all of the chicks or none of them, Pumpkin can't be on her own, it would be cruel. We'll see later on how it works out.
