Drawing of golden beetle on branch in my moleskine. The beetle was painted over in PS, in the sketchbook it's coloured with pencils but it turned out kinda blah, I'm new at rendering shiny stuff. I'm not entirely sure if it's completely done yet, I might still work a little on the beetle. Edit: Worked more on the bug. SirJohanna fucked around with this message at 08:58 on Apr 16, 2014 |

Rough value/color study to help paint the final.

Just a suggestion: I'd try darkening the values on the door and big chunk of flying debris to see if it gives the piece a bit more depth.

Thanks Felat, I'll work it in as I'm painting the final.

Don't put too much faith in my critic tho, because this drawing clearly proves how much I suck at this stuff. I just started drawing straight ahead without measuring anything and my study ended up hobbit proportioned.

Daily portraits #3. This one sucks (I think because the nose is too short and the lower half of the face is warped to one side and the teeth are way too darkly outlined? Can anyone else see any glaring malformations?) but you're going to see it anyway. You're going to see them all! Every last one!

Try thinning your lines out quite a bit and going for more precise shapes. Right now the teeth are the same thickness as the lips, which are the same as the cheek, nose, and eye lids. Needs some more variation in line thickness (or drop the lines altogether).

Trying to use color... drew it for last month's theme and painted it since it's an undersea landscape! I need to learn how to do color. Picked up 'Color and Light' by Gurney, so hopefully that and a million hours of practice will help. Since I over-work / think everything, tried to do something fast with minimal fussing. Although it's not spectacular, I kind of like it, and am happy I resisted the urge to keep messing with it.

That's a really good book and should help you out a ton. I've found that half the battle with color is actually getting the values correct.

One of the better "perks" of my job is having an office down the hall from the A&P prof (who is incredibly supportive of my interest in artistic anatomy, no less). She loaned me an anatomy book that's been awesome for studies.

Been a while since I've posted in Daily Doodles. I've been distracted by watching a whole lot of wrestling. So I decided to start doing wrestling-inspired art. And because the hot new thing is Disney Princesses these days, I'm drawing Disney Princesses as classic wrestlers.

I'm trying to gradually wean myself off lines altogether, but I've really neglected learning to show form with tone in the past so it's a slow process. I'll pay more attention to line widths (and nose-mouth placement, which has been a thorn in my side for years and years for some reason.)

In terms of feature placement on faces, I always get psyched out because the plane of the face, and the cranium itself, are pretty large. When you place the face on there, it looks deceptively tiny so you want to fill up the space. At least that always seems to be my problem. When I consciously make an effort to reduce the size of my features and tighten up their placement, my drawings are more successful. When you look at other animals, mostly their 'face' takes up most of the front of their head. We got big ole cheeks and foreheads and temples.

Yeah, I seem to invariably push values to the middle the moment color is involved. Practice practice practice! I have been doing those quick tiny studies from Ctrl-Paint and they seem to be helping.

Here's a sketch, next to zero effort into the drawing or coloring. I've never really drawn a multi-panel cartoon before, so it's mostly an exercise in layout and composition.

Well, just at first glance it looks like her face takes up too much of her head. The face only really occupies the bottom half of it. She could stand to have more cranium, I think.

I've been drawing i swear, I just cant post a lot of it But here are cut outs of me and my friends! Wait. edit. I can probably show you this. I took a test for the show I work on, It was for prop design. A prop is like a thing that a character interacts with, like a spoon, a space ship, a car. or what have you. Also they test you on you ability to draw an object from various angles. So yeah, if your not already watching Rick and Morty, you should. Because I will be designing props for season 2. Also it is a good show. Typical fucked around with this message at 08:59 on Apr 18, 2014 |

More stuff from my book. I've been growing increasingly uncomfortable with the cover image I used. It didn't sit quite right from the beginning, I suppose, but I could not identify what it was that bugged me. Anyway, decided to rework it: I do like it better. Would appreciate a heads up if anyone notices something I should pay attention to before publishing.
