I have never heard of a game failing entirely because of an item dupe. Very rarely does one bug - even as badly managed as this one - cause an entire game to drop dead. It's not often that things die out because of one problem, most of the time problems stack and topple like dominoes.
Even with an AH the problem would eventually blow over. Yes, it's still an issue that should be (and ideally has been) fixed but it's only one in the short-term. Long-term the economy will equalize as it does in real life when similar fraudulent activities happen.
Either the game will cease to function for some other reason and the economy will no longer be an issue or it will succeed and the economy will recover.
Last I checked the Great Depression ended, and so will this.
