The thing is, the city I live in is a pretty slow place to drive. There are a few places on the commute where I can open up, but it's mostly urban streets with a good amount of lights.

I hear a lot of people say the S2000 isn't that fun to drive on the streets or in traffic since the torque's in the usual Honda spot and due to some amount of harshness from stock handling and ride characteristics.

I'm not much of a tuner or competitive driver; I just want to enjoy myself on the track and cruise with the top down when I'm running errands. Should I spend the extra on the hard-core-OMG-they're-never-going-to-make-another-car-like-it S2k, or save 5-10 grand and just get a NC and some aftermarket suspension bits?

Eh, that's usually coming from people who don't understand how a beater can be fun to drive. You have to wring it out to get that fun bwaaaAAAAAA from vtec but other than that it's plenty fast enough, the gearbox is fun to row through, and the handling of the car even at street speeds is enough to put a smile on your face. The F20/F22 isn't as anaemic as some guys like to spout, you're not going to die because you couldn't get it into vtec on your morning commute.

Get an S2000 OP. Now just decide on the colour.

I live inside the Baltimore beltway, and nearly exclusively drive my S2000 from March - November, often on trips of mostly surface streets with poor maintenance and lights every 2-3 blocks worth of roadway.

My other primary option for a car is a B5 S4 with 270 ft-lb of torque at ~1850 rpm. The S2000 is fun for tooling around town anyway and my first choice except in inclement or freezing weather.

Drive an S2k and an NC and then judge for yourself. I've driven both and I wouldn't even have to think about this decision though.

No disagreements, I used to own an NC Miata. I suspect a bit more torque would do wonders to resolve their grievance.

It's pretty great in traffic, 1st gear idles at 2-3mph so you can creep in traffic without having to do the left foot dance. The car is fun to wring the poo poo out of but it's enjoyable just to cruise around in as well. It also doesn't have an issue with torque, you just need to drive it like the redline is 9000rpm. If you're short shifting and keeping the motor in the 1-3krpm range no loving poo poo it's going to have no torque.

Regarding sitting in traffic: I live in Austin and traffic is an issue here. Ah well, I'm coming from an RSX-S on coilovers and poly motor mounts. Lots of rowing already, and I think the RSX-S has taller gears. Comfort is not a big deal to me.

I just learned this:

quote:

The top goes up great, very smooth, and very easy to do. I noticed one small hole this week (about the size of a pencil tip) it is where the roof folds when it is down, so I put a dab of silocon for awnings (on it on the inside) to stop it from tearing. Will send a picture. Can't see it from the outside, I wouldn't have noticed it if it hadn't been so bright out. I have never had a problem with leaks. I also have the leather boot to put over the top while it is down.

How much does a new top run installed? Are they as big of a pain in the rear end to DIY as they are for Miatas?

I don't know how much new ones cost, but when I was looking for mine, I think every one I looked at had that tear near the hinge. It's extremely common. My car's PO had his repaired by a sailmaker for like 30$.

A new top is 2-3k from the dealer or ~1.5k if you buy a Robbins top and have someone install it. It's also a pretty big pain in the rear end even if you just buy one from a totalled car and swap it over, you need to remove most of the interior trim behind the seats which is a surprising amount of plastic for such a small car.

I was quoted $1500ish for a Robbins Trilogy vinyl installed - I might see if she will knock the price down that much. I can also buy some other form of Robbins at Rockauto for $470 and have it installed for $700ish.

I hate trying to take care of black cars. I actually like Suzuka exteriors, not sure how I feel about the interiors. First choice by far would be silver/all red (I hate the red black combo seats), second choice would be Laguna/black, third silver/black, fourth Suzuka or white/black. No red or yellow due to cops, no black due to maintenance.

If you're going to have 19k in it, why not look for a better example to start and have a pristine one? That one has been used as a car, not as a special toy. There are enough S2000s out there, with a lot of them having "special toy" status from the start, that you'll find the right car, not just a car.
