2 dates in 2 days (technically only 5 1/2 hours apart) and I was feeling on top of the world until I noticed my ex's okcupid account was active and had to view it long enough to hide her so she doesn't come up in searches. Which she would come up in because we're apparently a 96% match. God drat.

Gonna go watch Akira with some movie nerds for a meetup later. They call this group Cinema Paradiso, so they can't be all bad right? Hopefully this will give me just the right kind of distraction.

I had a singing audition for the Portland Area Theatre Alliance last week and now have a callback for the main villain in a production of Parade.

Since I thought I lost the tempo and blew the audition, this was really unexpected. I also didn't do a monologue or any of the dancing auditions, so the callback is based entirely on my rendition of "Marry Me a Little" from Company, which I admittedly am a really good match for vocally.

I'm not getting my hopes up or anything since I have no idea if they're calling back dozens of people for the role, who else will be there, what exactly they're looking for, etc but it's still pretty drat rad and unexpected.

Maybe I'm going to make Portland work for me after all. :smith:

Movie chat: I went to a meetup and watched Akira yesterday and two of the people there were so excited that I had more to say than "It was good" during our discussion that they're basically pushing for friendship status like they want to date me or something.

Mainly because I didn't use the words pretentious, manipulative, problematic, etc I'm sure.

Congrats on the callback! I am so jealous because I absolutely adore Parade. When you say "main villain", are you talking Dorsey or Watson? Because I think they both have a pretty fair claim to the title.

Dorsey. I am not familiar with the show at all and just started looking into it this morning. Dorsey sounds like a character I could really nail if given the chance, but I am refusing to get my hopes up.

I really did just go to the audition in the hopes of getting into the chorus somewhere and having a chance to start to get into the scene. If I can manage to actually get cast in a real role I might just lose my mind.

I selfishly want you to move to Portland so we can start wooing other goons to come join us. We'll shift the balance from Chicago and Boston to Portland and then we'll ... well, I don't know what exactly.

I just completed my callback to play Dorsey in a production of Parade. I have an actual shot at a major role in a paid production in a major US city. Considering my background and how little experience I actually have (and no formalized training whatsoever), I feel pretty loving rad right now.

It doesn't matter if I get the part, even. I am a total rube from the sticks and I got a callback wherein I didn't embarrass myself. That's a win.

So, back on the first I posted my ... I guess teaser image for my autobio webcomic, Life and How to Live It and got some nice feedback. I've been considering doing this in small and large projects (some of the pages were drawn 8 1/2 by 11 inches, some 16 by 20 or larger), but I've also been in love with American Elf and really want to try and do a daily comic. As a compromise, I thought I might add "micro" to the list and continue something I've done on and off this year by journaling and doing a little sketch to go with it. The journal entries are none of your goddamn business, but if I turned the sketches into comics (or illustrations, I suppose) I might be able to do nearly daily updates with the larger projects coming along as they're completed.

So, if I were to do a 10 minute comic like this on a nearly daily basis, would you butts read it?

Especially if I interspersed it with things that looked more like this?

The writing will improve, but this is pretty indicative of the level of drawing prowess I intend to show for these little ones. This is less than 3 by 7 1/2 inches, so there's only so much I can convey in something that small. And the whole point is to fly through it so that it's spontaneous and doesn't turn into a burden for me (otherwise I just won't do it).

--edit:

Also assume I would actually buy a scanner instead of taking pictures with my lovely phone and throwing them online with very minimal manipulation.

Showed a girl Phantom of the Paradise today. She loved it. I'm trying not to read too much into the fact that my ex ... didn't. But maybe I should.

Making myself do a daily comic is already hard. Especially since most of my day was spent studying front end web development via an online training program I'm trying out for free. If I aim for daily and do every three days in the end, that would be rad. And it keeps the skills sharper so that I'm both more prepared and more into doing my "big" pages.

Geekboy, regarding your comic, I think it might work better as a weekly. I enjoy the style of graphic novel writing that was in your sample where you're mulling over the journal, but I like to really get into the mood and immerse myself in it, rather than read it in three panel snippets. It feels like impact is lost when I read a good line and then wait two days to read another. I'd probably end up not reading it regularly and just going through a bunch at a time when I've built up a backlog.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm planning my launch and am currently thinking of doing the daily bits and then a monthly "full" comic of anywhere from 2-6 pages (based on what I've got done in the backlog thus far). Lots of little, possibly erratic thoughts and then a nice, carefully thought out bit on a regular basis, too.

Maybe I'll do the daily, a weekly page, and a monthly story.

What would you think of the daily sketches, a weekly page that covers a single idea or event, then a monthly full-blown story (like the Jon Hamm dream I posted ages ago)? Maybe it would be the Sunday page? Similar to comic strips in newspapers, I could do the Sunday comics version in a larger format, etc.

Of course, all of this is an experiment and could drastically change at any time.

I've got roughly a month to figure this out based on my self-imposed deadline.

Oh, except I don't because then I need to take time to make the website work, too. Oh, and I have a job interview Monday that would pay really well but give me about 3 hours of commuting a day. And I have some people interested in helping me plan a launch party when I get this thing ready, so that will take up even more time.

How am I suddenly so drat busy?

Also, my avatar is accurate. I'm posting from a tiki-lounge that does karaoke with a Meetup group that goes and does drawings in fun places and drinks together. S'great.

There's something intimate about the work of the best voice actors that makes this especially sad to me.

So, I asked this in the Making Comics thread but I can rarely seem to get any feedback there since my comic isn't fantasy and has no anime girls in it (other than the fantasy world I construct around myself and the inevitable cosplayers I have seen in this city that may appear in the pages), but with my launch coming up I'm trying to iron out a release schedule.

I still like doing daily strips to go alongside a monthly (at least) larger piece, but I'm considering doing 2 updates a week with multiple entries per update. This would give readers more content and spread the work I can't carry in my pocket out a bit. Sitting down and drawing the strip every day has been a pretty easy habit to keep so far. Doing that, then scanning it, then cleaning it up, then posting it every day could become a real hassle that I worry I'd crap out on.

Any thoughts?

And for the record, I know that the average webcomic lover and the average indie autobio-comic lover don't overlap all that much. There are exceptions, of course. I just know I have an uphill battle here.

As long as you're updating on a regular schedule multiple times a week it should be fine, but if you're doing enough work to post it daily, can't you do all the scanning and cleaning in batches, then upload daily. Hell, I know in tumblr you can schedule updates so they'll automatically appear at a set time in the future (and I'm assuming most other web publishing platforms havve a similar function) so you can do a weeks worth of updates at the same time and not worry about it becoming a daily slog. And daily updates are a lot better for maintaining an audience.

If you've been reading them on twitter you'll have a few days before the content there is new since I'm posting them on a 5 day delay so I don't have to be at my scanner every single day (even if I will be doodling in my notebook every day). Please check out the site, follow the official twitter, the Facebook, and what-not if you are so inclined.

I was really emotional earlier today remembering all the times I started projects like this and never followed through on them. I have a notebook with a fully storyboarded and dialogued graphic novel from 2002 and 3 ring binder with a copy of the terrible novel I wrote sitting about 2 feet from me right now. Countless other ideas were half-formed or died because of depression and the lovely life I used to lead. I am not the least bit afraid to admit that once I finished uploading everything and did my first posts to social media to "announce it," I sat in my room and cried for a few minutes.

I actually loving did it.

And I resisted the urge to say "boo" to my ex about it, even though I really, really wanted to share this moment with her. But she Facebook creeps me, so I know she'll figure it out soon enough.

Oh, and I start a new job tomorrow. First time reporting for 40 hours per week in an office work since October. I've actually missed it.
