Prince and Warner Bros. Records today announced a new agreement that will see the release of long-awaited, previously unheard material, while giving the artist ownership of the master recordings of his classic, global hits. At the same time, the deal extends Prince's relationship with Warner Bros. Records, through an exclusive global licensing partnership that covers every album released from 1978 into the nineties. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

For Prince fans worldwide, the new partnership will open a veritable gold mine. The surprise announcement comes just in time for this summer's 30th Anniversary celebrations of the artist's breakthrough album and film, Purple Rain, which were released in 1984. For the first time, Prince will be releasing a digitally re-mastered, deluxe version of this classic album. Other planned projects will follow.

Prince said, "A brand-new studio album is on the way and both Warner Bros Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship."

"Everyone at Warner Bros Records is delighted to be working with Prince once again: he is one of the world's biggest stars and a truly unique talent" said Cameron Strang, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. Records. "We are also very excited about the release of new and re-mastered music from one of his greatest masterpieces."

This is some shocking news.

For people out of the loop, Prince has been working on an album (Plectrum Electrum) with his new all girl rock band 3rd Eye Girl and another album of solo stuff that I guess Warner Bros is going to release now. He's been touring around, experimenting with his own online store, livestream, doing more TV apperances and even releasing a song through the record label Epic.

Well then! This is some poo poo right here. Exciting times.

I've seen Prince with 3rdeyegirl four times now, they're absolutely incredible shows, maybe even rivaling the Sign O' The Times era. Small, intimate venues, guitar heavy sets, tons of obscure rarities. The good stuff.

Not so keen on the newer music he's done with the group, but the thought of remastered albums and unreleased stuff has me foaming at the mouth. Something tells me it's gonna be a good year.

Prince apparently played Electric Intercourse last night for the first time since 1983. I think it's pretty safe to say that it'll be on the deluxe edition.

Here's the original if you've never seen it before.

man, they're gone.
Psyched for him rereleasing Purple Rain and although I haven't followed his more recent music I'm going to have to grab his album with 3RDEYEGIRL although why things can never be simple with him and be on a mainstream store like iTunes I'll never know. Just seen him and his band at Leeds in the UK and drat he still rocks the house, his band was awesome too. Strange that there was very little merchandise choice which surely should be a big earner I'd have thought. £190 on tickets, 4 hour round trip and thanks to a gently caress up at a roundabout the car now needs a new passenger-side wing and it was all worth it.

Some new details about his upcoming solo, not 3rdEyeGirl, album.

tl;dr - The Gold Standard, "a complex electronic discourse", This Could Be Us, remix of FUNKNROLL and an untitled track with Rita Ora so far.

quote:

Prince marches to his own time. We’ve known that for years.

His guy called late Saturday night while I was reviewing the Bruno Mars concert at Xcel Energy Center: Prince wants to play you his new album tonight.

When you arrive at Paisley Park, you switch to Prince time. After nearly an hour’s wait, I was ushered into Studio B about 1 a.m. All three members of 3rdEyeGirl were there, as well as two of their spouses, who work for Prince, plus Prince’s road manager and a reporter from Fox 9. But no Prince.

This is a new Prince album, not to be confused with the one he made with 3rdEyeGirl, “Plectrum Electrum,” which hasn’t been released. The ever-prolific Rock Hall of Famer hasn’t issued an album in the United States since 2009.

My next two hours at Paisley Park would be filled with funk, frustration and funny lines — all courtesy of Prince.

Engineer/producer Joshua Welton, husband of 3rdEyeGirl drummer Hannah Ford Welton, sat at the Studio B console, pushing the buttons. The long, opening tune, “The Gold Standard,” was percolating electro-funk, an update of classic Prince with a lyric that referenced the notions of “wild and rude” from his previous days. The second selection was a complex electronic discourse that was hard to grasp first time around.

Suddenly, the phone rang. It was Prince. Via speaker phone, we chatted. He said he believed in albums, not singles. “I’ve finally got something that is a cohesive statement,” he explained.

He didn’t mention the album’s title or release date, but he did discuss the difficulties of getting a hold of top executives at Warner Music Group, with which he signed a new deal this spring. Then he whined about how slowly wheels turn in the record business. “Every No. 1 song, every Top 10 song, every song in the Top 40 is at least six months old,” he said. “We should be able to make music and put it out now.”

He also carped about radio, wondering if program directors really direct their programs. “I don’t need to be on the radio,” he said. “I’ve been on the radio all my life.” But he wants to hear new, young artists on the radio.

Those are old complaints from Prince. At least, he was happy that this new project was made without a record label looking over his shoulder. The album was recorded mostly with just him and Welton, whom he touted as a rising producer.

Prince explained that the next song, “This Could Be Us,” was inspired by a meme of him and Apollonia riding on a motorcycle, clearly a scene taken from the 1984 movie “Purple Rain.” It’s a joyful ballad with some ecstatic Prince vocalizing.

The ensuing number was a remix of “Funk ‘n’ Roll,” a single he made with 3rdEyeGirl this year that they have performed live. This remix lived up to the song title, only it’s funkier and nastier than the original.

After hearing me praise his new recording, Prince asked if I had any money in my pocket and would I spend it on his new album.

“I spent most of it at Bruno Mars,” I said. “But I have plastic.”

“We don’t take plastic around here,” he said.

Rapping with Rita

Ever impatient, Prince asked Welton to next play a tune they recently made with British pop sensation Rita Ora. It’s a rare rap song on which the music was as aggressive and menacing as the rapping.

Prince talked about the urgency of releasing that tune because with Ora “time is money.” As a celebrity with lots of endorsements, she makes money walking out of the house wearing a certain kind of makeup or sunglasses, he explained.

Before Prince invited everyone to go to another room to watch a video of his recent Paris performance with 3rdEyeGirl, our ever-gracious but unseen host asked if anyone was hungry. The answer around the room was “No.”

“Good,” he said. “Then I don’t have to come cook for you again.”

The current rumor is that Prince is planning to drop a surprise NPG album in October

So it's possible we'll get

September - ARTOFFICIALAGE/3RDEYEGIRL
October - Untitled NPG collection
November - Purple Rain remaster

Pretty wild.

Also if you were looking to preorder the new albums in September, Amazon finally dropped the price on them down to $11.88 each.

I'm hoping that the rest of his back catalog gets the deluxe treatment.

I was going to direct you to HDTracks but it looks like they pulled all the Prince stuff for some reason because Prince now owns the masters.

They had Dirty Mind, Purple Rain, 1999, Around The World In A Day, For You, and Controversy which were all sourced from the vinyl remasters Warner put out a few years ago.

If you're an idiot like me and you preordered the digital versions of both albums from Amazon for $10.49, you'll want to contact them because they just dropped the price of the CD down to $9.99 and added autorip.

And it looks like Art Official Age is getting a vinyl release somewhere because a import option has been added directly from Amazon for October 7th (but you won't want to buy it from there because they want $58 for it)

- edit Oh, and I guess the albums leaked out were released overseas first because the people on prince.org are going insane. Apparently Art Official Age is his best album since The Gold Experience and Time is the greatest song ever released.

Art Official Age is very much the more sexy, slow jam, R&B album, while Plectrumelectrum is more rock and roll Prince. Both good, but I prefer the 3RDEYEGIRL album.

First impression: don't like it. It sounds like he's trying too hard to be "club" and it's embarrassing. The attempt at funk is nice but it's too sparse and overdubbed to be appealing for me. Also lol at the 90s hip hop air horn sample in the first track.

Hopefully plectrum electrum is more to my taste but I wasn't really digging that material either when I saw them

I dunno, it basically sounds like prince had a protools power hour. I don't dig it

Changed my mind, this album is great. Really slick production and totally funky in the weird way only Prince can do. Feels like a bonafide creative album straight out of his better work. I could do without one or two tracks but The Gold Standard is basically off of the black album and then segues into the fantastic U Know. Gonna be spinning this one for a while to come.

I listened to both albums and I think they're both great albums.

In my opinion Art Offical Cage is a bit better but maybe because it's just so smooth and sexy. Especially "U Know", "The Gold Standard" and both Affirmations + The Way back.

From the 3rdeyegirl album I like Pretzelbodylogic, Wow, Whitecaps and aintturninaround.

edit: and now some lady is wandering around Paisley Park. Prince's birds upstairs. Through the lobby. Into the recording studio. Some crazy mural outside where Prince is the center. Into a little booth with some guy who works there. He's showing the original Plectrum Electrum video.
