Can you explain Tube sites and how they effect the industry? Are they all based out of eastern Europe or something where they can't be touched? I'm assuming they have destroyed much of the profit..they have to be making millions and millions of dollars via ad revenue, right?

A Tube site is basically a site modeled after YouTube, but only has streaming porn scenes. The majority of these scenes are not owned by the Tube site and have not been licensed by the Tube site.

They are hosted all over the world. Some here in the US, some in Europe and some in Hong Kong.

Tube sites highly contributed to the decline in the industry. The industry was once considered "recession proof", much like alcohol and tobacco. However, the bubble of sorts burst around 2008, when the economy crumbled.

However, a large number of Tube sites are actually owned by the parent company of Brazzers. A company now called MindGeek.

Punc posted:

I've always figured that some tubes get money from the companies, since they have the audience and mostly have like the 5 minute trailer bits?

I also remember all the big tubes (YouPorn and whatever) being owned by one big corporation, who make a killing of them.

The only companies making money from Tube sites are those that either own them or advertise on them.

The Tube sites came to fruition from the original creators of Brazzers. That parent company was called Mansef. Mansef tried to hide their relationship with Tube sites. During that early period the tube sites were a difficult issue, to the point that the owners of Mansef felt personally threatened and traveled with private security. At that point the original owners of Mansef sold the company and it became Manwin. Manwin admitted their involvement with Tube properties and wanted to work with the industry. Manwin also purchased several other large production companies. They now own besides Brazzers, Digital Playground, Twisty's, Mofos, and Reality Kings. They also manage Playboy's web and broadcast properties. The owner of Manwin became embroiled in a tax evasion case in Europe. He was bought or forced out depending on what you want to believe. MindGeek was then born and this now includes Redtube joining the ther long list of properties that make up MindGeek.

They have recently more and more made attempts to make things better with their tube properties.

In terms of making millions from their tube sites, that is unlikely. MindGeek has a huge staff (based in Montreal) and combined with massive bandwidth overhead for all the streaming videos the profits are much less.

However what MindGeek really gets from this is incredibly insight into what people search for and what they want to see. They can then use that data on their membership sites to bring in consumers.

With the spread of piracy and tube sites and (lets be honest) no-one paying for porn any more, how has this affected the female performers in terms of their pay? Has it gone down, or do they just do escort work more?

Bittorrent is never going to be something the average person uses. Porn is an impulse purchase. Bittorrent isn't the issue.

Female Performers make more now then ever. When I started the average rate for a b/g scene was about 800 dollars. Today the lowest rate is now 1,000 per scene and the popular girls can charge almost twice that.

The real problem in all this is you have one company controlling nearly 60 to 70% of all adult internet traffic on the entire internet.

It's having highly aerobic sex in sometimes the most difficult situations, all the while keeping every frame of penetration open to the camera lens. Anyone can have sex for 10 minutes with someone they are attracted to and that likes them. It is a whole other thing to be on a set, where time is money and the girl you're working with is having a bad day and you have to use your abilities to get her to come around and perform well with you on camera. There are no fluffers. They are a myth.

Men do not have to start in Gay porn. Matter of fact doing any sort of gay porn can affect your ability to get steady work in the straight industry.

There are no drugs on set. Drug addicts quickly get weeded out. They can't show up on time and word quickly spreads not to hire them.

The average person (including performers) in the porn industry make a decent middle class or upper middle class living.

Most of the girls don't have daddy issues.

Being around or in porn doesn't turn you into a complete deviant. In 15 years I've been involved in 100's of scenes, edited 100's of hours of porn and I still check out the girl in leggings walking down the street.

Prior to joining Evil Angel, I was paid similar to a performer. I would get a flat rate per scene that I shot.

The difference with Evil Angel is they are a distributor and not a production company. I have complete control and create whatever I want. I have to fund each project myself, produce it, shoot it, edit it and even design all related materials (ie boxcover). Evil Angel sells it and I get a royalty for the life of the product.

Due to Evil Angel being such a strong brand, they are able to do very well in both selling your product and the more difficult task of collecting money for the product they have sold on your behalf.

I have never been a big fan of shooting brand new girls, however I recently did put out a movie with exactly that name. I was surprised how well it turned out. Some of the new performers entering this industry are on another level sexually.

The reason I shy away from shooting new performers is my strengths are not in showing new performers how to pose their bodies. That has never been one of my strong suits. I'm much better suited in other areas.

There is no drug testing. It is nearly impossible to be a drug addict and do this successfully. Your call times are often early, 8 or 9am. You have to be reliable and be able to get to different sets for each different scene, which is spread out all over Southern California and now models increasingly fly to Las Vegas and to Northern California and sometimes Florida.

Models have to have some wardrobe, which will sometimes be used. Models with a good wardrobe tend to be more successful.

Drugs tends to ruin a models body, which becomes very obvious and will lead to no one wanting to hire them.

I know a few people who loosely know (never touched her, just hung out) Gianna Michaels and they say she is a really cool and down-to-earth person. Have you ever had interaction with her, and even more importantly, if that's a "yes," did you bang her?

Also, in their personal lives, are porn actresses very relaxed in casual sexual relationships? Meaning they meet a friend-of-a-friend at a party, they think he's cool - would they be more likely to have have sex with him as they may view it as "not as big a thing to do" as the general public would? Like, when a "normal" girl would meet you at a club and make out with you, would a porn actress instead be willing to sleep with you?

I'm mostly thinking about the performers here, but if there's also a specific answer that comes to mind for the people doing the crew work etc. I'd be interested in hearing that as well.

This industry isn't really suited for part time work, however, there is a great deal of flexibility which allows the performers to not have to live in LA . There have been some performers who have more limited schedules. I'd say 40% don't live in Los Angeles and only travel here to work. They come into town every month and spend two weeks working and then go back home. This certainly affords them to have a life outside the industry, because they don't live it. They go back to their normal life. However, that does impact how much work they get. Some companies might not be shooting when they come into town. Their work can be more limited than a performer who lives in SoCal.

Some schedules are limited due to schooling. I recently had a situation where I needed to shoot a scene on a specific day with two specific models and one of them couldn't arrive to set till after their course schedule was completed for the day.

I'd say it is greatly split. Some performers have their own separate life, but many that live in LA stick to the social circles of the industry.

It's interesting that you bring this up as there are a lot more pornstars doing webcam shows than I think people realise. Even pornstars who consider themselves to be "out of porn". I don't know how much a top pornstar with a large following makes per scene but the earning potential for a day on cam if you have a large following can easily be 300$/day (that's my absolute lowest projection of their earnings) and it's in their own home etc. However, I think that the novelty wears off pretty quickly as buying webcam shows can be expensive (pornstars often charge way more than amateur models) and what people like about webcam shows is that they're personalized. When you have a huge following it's hard to really care about individual customers - especially if they have a lot.

There are a few studios that work with certain camsites that get promotion from the site. I think that they pay their performers a set amount and take the hit if they don't break even which is why they don't often have big names (or rarely do). The buy-ins for these shows are often higher than most guys are willing to pay (considering the culture of the sites now) and I rarely see the shows making their minimum goal (though they start anyway). I'm certain that these shows are getting filmed and then sold later on the studio's website, which is maybe why they consider them worthwhile? I don't know if you know anything about that but I would be interested to know.

Web camming 10 years ago was a somewhat difficult process. It required the model having access to a media streaming server. Often the quality was low and the streams were unreliable.

What has changed is there are now cam sites that act as middle of men. Sites like My Free Cams and Streammate allow a model with their own internet connection and webcam to broadcast their stream through them. The performer can then use social media to advertise when they will be online. The cam site will also promote the model in their own cam network. The cam company then takes a cut of the models earnings.

There are also some production companies who only do cam shows. They hire a model for flat scene rate like you stated and then attempt to get viewers through these same cam sites as well their own membership sites. Members see the cam for their monthly membership, while non-members have to buy into the stream through the respective cam network site.

The only thing that could possibly effect a models future work are scenes that involve "cross over" work. I have no first hand experience with Kink. Many performers I've shot love them and continue to work with them. Some performers don't like working for them.

To be blunt I don't understand BDSM. I'm not into seeing people beat up or heavily restrained.

As a producer my single complaint is that a model works for kink, it isn't uncommon for them to end up with some form of bruising. That affects her future work. A model shows up for me after working for Kink and she has bruises, there is a chance I might cancel the scene. Other producers also might do the same thing. It looks bad.

I understand that there are many people inside and outside the industry involved in the BDSM community and they have a right to explore those interests.
