There was a trick the veteran rangers used to manage the bog stench. There was a small plant called Wintereye, that grew near the roots of old trees. It was edible, and a common herb for seasoning wild birds, but the real use for rangers was crushing the petals between your fingers and rubbing the resulting bits of essence under your nostrils. This resulted in a delightful, soft foresty smell - which, however unfortunately, didn't take the stink completely away. And what was worse...after a time it didn't seem to matter at all.

Lucan sighed as he rubbed his fingers under his nose again to refresh his dose. Wretched bullywugs. Who could live in this stench all day? Even after the many days he spent ranging out here, it still baffled him...though not nearly as much as the message. The coast disappeared? He was half-tempted to dismiss it as an old man's drunken ravings. But it was a message by ritual, to a watcher on vigil. That worried him. Sure, in his relatively short lifetime, he hadn't seen any catastrophal examples of Fey magic shaping the world, but he had heard the stories from his parents. What if there was another Fey Lord was on the loose? The young ranger snorted. Maybe they could get the newcomer to fight the bullywug's liege lord. That'd be something.

Either way, he was summoned, so he had to go. Picking up his bow and quiver, Lucan ducks his head underneath the weave of leaves, and starts climbing down. The bogs were quiet, this time of day, which was fortunate for him. With an urgent message like this, he had no real time to deal with any nosy frogs. Still, silence was no realy indication of safety. So with an arrow notched, just in case, Lucan starts heading back to Oiyen. Time to see what this strange message was about.

Oh, hell. Just what he needed. But it wouldn't do to get caught with his pants down now. So with practiced motions, Lucan rips some fabric from his sleeve, and uses it to tie down the wound and stop the bleeding - for now. When he could get to the village, there'd be time to fix it proper. After making sure it's nice and tight, the ranger runs, and doesn't look back. He dives into some bushes to throw whatever pursuer there might have been off his path. Better safe than sorry.

The real question was, what the hell had it been? Bullywugs weren't that smart. Pixies were annoying, but they couldn't shoot these bolts. A fae lord? Was he about to be hunted for sport? Just the thought of it made Lucan grip his bow tighter as he continued to try and stay hidden on his path back to town. he wouldn't give in to fear. He couldn't.

"I could use some looking after before I go," Lucan remarks wryly, pointing at his leg; his primitive bandage had already been soaked from the journey. At the Elders' surprised looks, he holds up the metal bolt explains about the giant bullywug, and the little old man. "I've never seen their like before, but they're obviously a danger; the wug ambushed me with this nasty surprise without much effort even if I was keeping an eye out. Whatever rangers you send out there should be careful. More than usual."

He doesn't like having to go out after such a big threat has made itself known. But the Elders are right, the odd appearance of land needed to be investigated. So as soon as his leg was fit for travelling again, Lucan set out with some new rations. Time to see what this was all about.

It wasn't until he came into the Path of Fire that Lucan realized that this could very well be a death sentence. Why him? He was a competent ranger, sure, but he was hardly the most skilled. Perhaps that was why he'd been sent; he was good enough that success was possible, but not good enough that he wasn't disposable. The thought irked him more than he cared to admit. But he pressed on regarless. He wasn't going to just lay down and die, after all.

His feet are light, but his eyes are not quite on the mark. Staying hidden is easy; but that means watching for other hidden things is twice as hard.

Perception to spot threats at 1d20+15=19.
Stealth to sneak at 1d20+11=26.

As a rule, rangers tended to stay away from strangers. It was always better to be safe than sorry, after all, in case said strangers turned out to the agents of the Fey. But really, these Goblins got away with too much. Boiling oil? Really? Nasty little creatures. So Lucan nocks his arrows, shooting two goblins near the tipping cauldron, before stepping back and preparing himself for the onslaught of the little creatures.

Standard; Twin Strike vs M19/N18 at 2xd20+12=21,29. Both hit for 1d12+1=12 damage.
Move; Shift to N33.
Minor; Spitting-Cobra Stance. Until the stance ends, as an immediate reaction, make a RBA (Read; Grappling Spirits) against any enemy within 5 that moves closer to me.

"Duck." Lucan says matter-of-factly, shooting an arrow glowing with bright purple strands down at the approaching metal constructs, before wheeling around, his next arrow practically shaving the redhead's hair off as it sails over her head and nails one of the goblins against the cauldron. Her teleportation worried him. Were she and her companions agents of the Fey after all? She had the outfit for it - he couldn't remember the last time he'd seen somebody in such relative fine clothing. Everybody back home wore rags and dented armor at the best. Just to be sure, he notches another arrow, though he keeps it low. If the stranger had paid attention, she knew it wouldn't be much of an effort for him to shoot her if he had cause. "Friend or foe?" His voice is steady, his sunken eyes focused. Now was not the time to get distracted.

Especially not when a pixie floats up over the ridge to join the girl. Lucan's lips tighten into a narrow line, and he takes aim.

"Fighting the goblins is one thing. Showing up as the heir to some Baron's throne with a pixie on your shoulders..." His eyes narrow, scouting about for other threats. The other horned warrior, climbing up over the ridge a little further back. Maybe other goblins. "I don't give out my name to agents of the Fey. That's just asking for trouble."

"Goblins," he snorts derisively, before letting fly, easily disabling one of the wagons. Seeing it fall apart before his eyes, he turns back to Alena.

"Look, I'm well aware my appearance is a little shocking. I had enough of that back of my village, thank you. But if you're not Fae, then who are you? There's not a village around for miles, barring my own."

"Anger management issues. Noted." Lucan wipes off a bit of goblin before aiming more carefully this time, staring down the VIG from atop the walls. His arrow trails a streak of black through the air as it flies, and explodes in a cloud of swarming, translucent bats that harry and pester. The sheer force of the magic throws the VIG off the cannon and almost into the boiling oil of the wagon next to it. "Let's finish this blowhard before he calls up something more interesting."

"I don't think that's a good idea, guys." Lucan was never of a mind to taunt Great Kings, imaginary or otherwise. Best to leave them unaware of you in the first place. "And we also have incoming. Better find some cover." He notches an arrow, but doesn't try to shoot the projectile. At this distance, he's not too sure he can hit it. So he finds cover instead, but keeps an eye on the party. "And find it soon." He stresses to Lerissa, who seems to be having a whale of a time fighting the locked door.

"...You guys are crazy." It's the only thing Lucan can say as Sully just charges the elder wug like it's nothing. "I can't believe this." Still, with a move like that, it would be unsporting not to follow. Practical, sure. Safe, sure. But unsporting. So he loads up an arrow, and another, and aims for the toppled frog. The arrows stick in its hide, but don't seem to hurt it one bit.

As the giant wug disappears, Lucan tries to help out the others by taking out a snapper, but his attention is more focused on where the frog might reappear. He's obviously a hunter, so the weakest prey is the easiest target. Loading an arrow, the ranger's eyes scan the battlefield while he tries desperately to restrain his panic. They were fighting a Fey Lord! They were gonna die!

Lucan continues to fire arrows at the frog. Panicked or not, he does find some measure of twisted satisfaction in seeing the mighty creature so on the ropes as it is. He tries to have another go at the lock, as well, caught up in the momentum as he is, though his effort doesn't seem that much more successful than the previous one.

As Baelwaag is quite literally disintegrated, and everybody else crowds around the disintegrator to discuss their next move, Lucan collapses against the wall with heavy breathing. The same drat Fey Lord that had stuck him with a bolt when he'd not even so much as had a thought of anybody else being there was now dead, at the hands of them and their mighty...whatever it was. A Fey Lord was dead! It was unheard of. The most experienced rangers of the village had gotten where they were by being smart enough to run. Lucan had not been that smart when the wug had shown up, and by all rights he should've been yet another name lost to the cruel march of the Fey.

But he wasn't. And his new comrades in arms weren't. Frankly, it was almost too much for him. What was he even supposed to do? But looking on to the group again, he realizes one thing. They helped him achieve this. Even when they had no reason to. These five strangers had saved him from that typical fate. Whoever they were; it would be worth it to stick with them. So Lucan stands up, slowly, and joins the group. "Oy. Miss Baron." With half a smile, he extends his hand. "My name is Lucan Audley. I'm from a place not too far from here, called Oiyen, and I'm looking for the cause of the disappearance of the sea. Or I was, until I got pulled into this madness. I still think you're all crazy, by the way..." He pauses, his smile widening a little. "But I appreciate the fact that you didn't just turn on me like you did on the goblins."

Not being from Nellen, Lucan only half partakes in the festivities, and even that with a forced smile and a strained tolerance for goblin curiosity. While most of said curiosity is focused on Miss Baron and the others, he's not particularly surprised when a few goblins come up to him to gawk at his horns. To avoid saying something that might offend their hosts - because it's not wise to do so, no matter how you might have come to be someone's guest - Lucan keeps eating and drinking while trying to find some reason for all this madness to have happened to him, of all people.

Although something keeps nagging at him. A Fey Lord personally showed up (probably his fault, as it was his blood said Fey Lord had shed and was therefore probably able to track) to slay them. They freed a... something that blasted the Fey Lord to smithereens - something that nobody has ever even heard of happening before. And yet said something, that was now laying comatose somewhere in the fort had been imprisoned there by this Great King. So that left the question...where the hell is the Great King, and how pleased will he be if he discovers a bunch of strangers being honored by his goblin tribe?

So after the toast is done, Lucan gets up from his seat and shuffles on over to Alzherad's side, trying not to bump any goblins onto their little scrawny butts. "So, hey, mister big guy," he begins, though he pauses a little in surprise as he finds his words a little slurred, "you keep going on and on 'bout this great king guy. Who's he and why's he so important?"

Morning came with bleary eyes and loud noises and a hammer to the head. If you thought goblins were annoying when you were in a fight, try revising your opinion once you've had an unknown amount of goblets filled with a mysterious liquid and half a night's rest. But nevertheless Lucan got his gear together and joined the rest, even if he was even more quiet than usual, his eyes squinted and his expression sour.

"I didn't really come here expecting any sort of welcome but a bad one," he eventually replies to the Baron's question, not even noticing his voice is hoarse and raw, "and I can't go back until I find out what the hell happened to the ocean. I ain't never heard of this Nellen place, but if what you say about the distance is true, things are more out of place than I thought. Are you sure it's not further than a day?"

"Honestly? I've never been. But it should be around the same distance as where you claim your village is." Lucan says no more. If their village is where miss Baron claims to be, then it is at least part of the stretch of land that appeared overnight. Maybe the cause? Either way, getting there should provide some answers.

But when they come to a crashing halt, his action doesn't drop a beat, loosing two arrows at the first target he sees, before hopping off and shooting again. As Sariya manages to slip away from the brownies, Lucan steps up and unlocks the mechanism he'd scavenged from Bael'waag's bolter. Loading up six arrows at once, the wretched creatures look more like pincushions as they fall to the ground when his volley is unleashed. Not missing a beat, he turns a full circle, unleashing two arrows that glow with a strange green light...but only one of them hits its target. One of the remaining elders is zapped into nothingness, only to reappear a short distance away.

Lucan resists the mental whammy well enough, but is surprised at William's ferocity, letting out a low whistle. "Dang. Well, lady-not-his-mother, I guess it's your unlucky day," he remarks with a hint of viciousness as he nails her with two arrows. The closequarters makes wielding his greatbow a little difficut...but at least it's pretty hard to miss from this distance.
