quote:L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling told his GF he does NOT want her bringing black people to his games ... including Magic Johnson ... and it's ALL on tape. Additional Facts that don't need to be brought up all the time: Sterling has a long, long history of doing really racist poo poo. He settled in a cases regarding housing discrimination in which it looked like he, in fact, was very discriminatory. Elgin Baylor sued him for a discriminatory workplace (jury acquitted). quote:Players Sam Cassell, Elton Brand and Corey Maggette complained to me that Donald Sterling would bring women into the locker room after games, while the players were showering, and make comments such as, ‘Look at those beautiful black bodies.’ I brought this to Sterling’s attention, but he continued to bring women into the locker room.” and of course: Lockback fucked around with this message at 16:18 on May 12, 2014 |

I'm gonna repost the WEREWAIF list of things owners have done/do in acquiring their ownership as context for why the discussions on DONALD STERLING seemed to be more people who don't post much about basketball usually:WEREWAIF posted:Most NBA owners got their money through shady nasty stuff. If there aren't published scandals, you could talk to a writer from the company's hometown paper and get information about all the horrible things they've done. Let's do a rundown, if someone has more info feel free to add on. This isn't to say Donald Sterling ain't done nothing wrong by saying awful stuff to his girlfriend, but y'all should keep in mind when expecting Sterling to be removed for it that you may never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than a group of professional sports owners. But there's certainly some That Old Guy Is Awful fatigue for veteran ball-watchers. They can also tell you which stars have assaulted their wives/girlfriend and have a developed ability to ignore things in order to watch a basketball game. Google "lockout" if you want to see how a threat of players refusing to play might affect a group such as that as whole. I think the scandal might be slightly surprising to folks who follow all kinds of basketball because they'd known he was a monster for a long time and figured people didn't actually care, what with how they usually don't. Personally I wish all teams were run by the Green Bay Packers, I love the connection that fanbase has to the team, but that ain't gonna happen, and I'm not certain y'all should get your hopes up expecting much more penalty for Sterling than maybe he has to watch games from a tinted owner's box.

I used to hate the Clippers because of Donald Sterling but now that he's gone all mainstream, he's lost his edge. He's just a racist that makes sounds for the masses now. I'll always be a fan of the glory days of slumlord Sterling. He made most of his best racism back then.

A strike is when players refuse to play. Lockouts are entirely owner-driven as they are ready and willing to shut down the league to negotiate more favorable terms with each successive CBA. That probably supports your point even further. Unless you meant the threat to decertify, effectively a threat to stop playing for multiple years, which actually resolved that whole lockout mess up quite quickly.

This is the direction the conversation has been turning to now. A lot of the people speaking out on this are becoming outraged that this should have been dealt with years and years ago. At the very least, this may allow for new rules of ownership be amended if it hasn't already.

I'd love to see the Clippers and Warriors players come together before the game today and basically give a joint speech saying "gently caress Donald Sterling." A boycott's probably not feasible since the player's deserve to play, but I'd love to see them take advantage of the stage they have to put a message through

I do feel good that when 80 year old billionaires date 20 year olds, they need to deal with the same stupid circular arguments that ended up happening when I was 20 and dating 20 year olds. What did Donald Sterling think was going to happen in this phone conversation? I also love this quote:DS: There's no racism here. If you don't want to be... walking... into a basketball game with a certain... person, is that racism? When you define "certain person" as black, yes. That is easily the most clear cut definition of racism.

So what does the league do in this situation? Ideally he'd not be the owner of the team anymore, but they couldn't just buy the team away from him or force him to resign, could they? This is one hell of an awful situation and is also the epitome of gently caress That Guy, but I have no idea what the league can an cannot do here.
