Welcome to the Something Awful Oath Thread Wiki! This is the thread for the SomethingAwful.com Oath Thread, a fun and engaging painting competition where the winner is YOU! What is this 'oath thread' business? OK, cheesy opening aside, the Oath Thread is really just a way to get people to paint a new miniature figurine or wargaming model each month, have a bit of fun, maybe learn a new technique and along the way earn points that may get them super-cool prizes. How The Oath Thread Works Each month, you can promise (or 'Oath') to paint a model or group of models. Post a picture of the exact model you're going to paint. By the end of the month, if you've finished painting that model, you may also win excellent FREE prizes from some of the top names in the wargaming industry! That's really it. There are a few rules, such as how to format your oath and when you need to post your finished picture, but these will be laid out in this handy-dandy wiki format so they'll be easy to find. How to Earn Points (and Prizes!) Earning points is easy. Post a picture of your finished model before the deadline and you earn points! (this is actually where you'll earn the bulk of your points) Complete the Journal theme and you get more points. Put your user name into the picture of your model and you get another point. You get the idea! If you do the theme and correct Oath and post finished pictures of your model on time, you'll earn 5 points in a month. There are other ways to earn points, however...and the top points-earners at the end of the Oath Season (at the end of April 2015) will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of awesome Grand Prizes! Click here to see the current points totals: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhbAQSD-C_25dFcwTGtXeWJpNG9Ob18yclJKYUhQMkE&usp=drive_web&pli=1#gid=1 There's a ton of ways to earn points and have fun doing it - see below for all the various Achievements you can earn! But remember! Earning awesome prizes is a secondary goal of the Oath Thread. These are THE MAIN REASONS you should take part: 1. Be motivated to paint all those awesome models you've got stacking up 2. Get painting tips and advice 3. Share your awesome models with other awesome people 4. Have a chance to win cool prizes from great companies and wonderful people These is just the basic info. See the next post for the simple guide to posting your oath and how you will claim points. Oathing a Model 1. Make sure you are posting your oath earlier than the last calendar week of each month. So for February you must post by 12 midnight *AMERICAN* SAMOAN TIME the 21st of February. For months with 30 days, you'll need to Oath by midnight on the 23rd, and for months with 31 days you'll need to Oath by midnight on the 24th. 2. Your model can be: 2a. still on sprue, completely unassembled, partly assembled or fully assembled 2b. unpainted, primed or basecoated in a single color - if primed or basecoated, please state what has been applied to the model 2c. zenithal priming IS allowed, however pre-shading or picking out details is not allowed - please state if you've used zenithal priming. (See the reason why it's now being allowed here). Click here for an example of acceptable zenithal priming, click here for one example and another example of UNacceptable zenithal priming. If you are in doubt, either Oath a picture of an unpainted or single-color primed model (the safest and easiest option), or post a picture of your zenithal-primed model and ask for clarification. 3. Go to http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ on your computer/tablet/phone, select *AMERICAN* SAMOAN TIME (or click this link) and take a picture of the oath model(s) beside the date and time on the screen. The time, date and location should be readable and the model should be in focus. Be patient and make sure the picture is READABLE and IN FOCUS before uploading your picture. 4. Please also indicate what line of miniatures your figure(s) are from - Citadel/GW, Reaper, Malifaux, etc. - this simply helps us give statistics to our prize sponsors. 5. Are you painting your model in a certain theme? There's a special bi-monthly mini-competition for the best themed group of models, so tell us if you're planning a theme! See the section 'Organizer's and Judge's Contests' below for details on the themed competition. 6. Hit the ‘Reply’ link and put something like ‘I, [yourname], oath that I will paint this [model name]’ - make sure this text is in BOLD. 7. Upload your picture to http://www.imgur.com or another free photo-hosting site and copy the BB code link into your oath post. (note: you can add your name to your Oath picture, but it isn't necessary) 8. Hit the ‘submit’ button and check the thread periodically for your oath to be accepted! (If you have any doubts about your oath being accepted, wait until krushgroove approves it, or at least 24 hrs before starting to paint it.) 9. Once you post your Approved Pictures, your oath is LOCKED IN and cannot be changed, only added to (click here to read about making Oath Additions). *Why American Samoa? Because it gives everyone the opportunity to paint until late at night on the last day of the month (unless you are living right on the International Date Line) rather than having to finish in the morning or afternoon of the last day, which doesn't really work out well if you have a normal school/work day. Completing your Oath 1. Make sure you are posting before the end of the calendar month - remember we’re using *AMERICAN* SAMOAN TIME time this season! 2. Don't miss out on a scoring point! INCLUDE YOUR USERNAME IN THE PICTURES - either by writing it on a piece of paper in your photos, or add in your name with photo-editing software (online or otherwise). PLEASE NOTE that if you take lots of pictures of your model(s), it helps everyone if you include your username in every photo, especialy if you have different backgrounds in your photos. 3. Post ‘Oath Complete!’ with a picture your finished model or group (if you're posting multiple pictures, try to use the [timg] tag instead of the [img] tag so they don't take up huge amounts of screen space) - see below for where to get free image hosting and how to post the images 4. If you did the current or any of the previous Detectuv’s Jurnal challenges, TELL US which one in bold 5. If you are claiming any Achievements , TELL US which one in bold and post whatever is relevant for that bonus 6. If you did anything else that should earn you bonus points, TELL US which one in bold 7. (Optional) Copy your post to the Miniatures Painting Thread and whatever other thread your fellow gamers post in (D&D, Malifaux, Battletech, Historicals, etc.) and encourage them to play, too! Did you fail your Oath? No problemo, there's no shame in that (unlike in previous threads)! You can also SAVE DA WHALES! which is sort of Oath Thread code for 'saving' an Oath that you failed. Here's how to Save Da Whales: Just post (after the 1st of the month) that you're gonna try and Save da Whales, and then post an Oath Complete that shows the completed Whales stuff, along with a link or quote of the original Oath that you failed. If you post an Oath Complete post that also includes your current Oath stuff, be sure to keep your August stuff separate from the Whales (so it's clear to Iris what to credit you for and where). Questions? Leperflesh, the Saviour of the Whales, answers your queries here! Achievements are how you can earn bonus points during the year and have a bit of fun. You're welcome to do as many or as few as you like, most will earn you points (but none more than earning first place in any given month from any of the judges). Each Achievement can be claimed just once during the Oath Season, and you must complete your Oath to earn the point(s) for your Achievement. I'd recommend you pace yourself with the Achievements, as there's only so many to last you 12 months! Make sure to CLAIM your Achievements where necessary: when you post your Oath Complete picture, simply post in bold what Achievement you are claiming. Of course, Judgements don't need to be claimed. 1-Point Achievements -------------------- Season 5iver! Claim this Achievement the first time you complete a Season 5 Oath! You don't need to claim this one, because any completed Oath means you've earned this one automatically! Backstory Write a character intro to make us laugh, then make us cry. Then make us laugh again! Why is your adventurer carrying two lanterns, a sack, 4 belt pouches, a backpack and 3 swords. No judging on the content, but extra internet points for making it entertaining in some way. Minimum 50 words. Post your backstory with your Oath Complete picture. Fly your flag Add and paint a banner, flag, pennant, etc. to your model or its base. Make it relevant to your army/faction! I rolled a 6! ...or a 20...or maybe an 01...Whichever is better for your chosen game. Create or paint markers, template, dice or some other gaming aid. Pretty up those translucent acrylic templates, custom-carve and/or paint some dice (yes you can get blank dice) or make some other game aid that you have to paint up. Just another way to customize your gaming experience! (To be clear, in this Oath Thread, Warmachine wreck markers are 'markers' and craters/wrecked vehicles for 40K are 'terrain'. We'll cross & burn the bridges for other markers/terrain for other game systems when we get to them!) Strike a Pose Pose your completed model in a scene and tell a story! This can be your current oathed model or a model you've completed before *in this season*. Put your model in a scene with another model or group of models, with any scenery you think might fit the scene. Your model could be casting a spell, sharing a beer with his adventuring mates, encouraging his men to move forward or getting ready to pass the game-winning touchdown - but tell us a little story about what's happening in the scene! Minimum 50 words. Post your backstory with your Oath Complete picture. Parts list Tell us all the paints, washes, inks and ingredients that went into making your completed model. Don’t forget the materials that went into your base! You can even include the various techniques you used. Post the list with your Oath Complete picture. All brand names and color names required - this can be by putting the colors in the text, or you can even simply take a picture showing all the color names on your paint bottles & pots. For extra love, copy your post to the Miniatures Painting Thread! In Battle! Show us a picture of your model in the throes of battle! This can be your current oathed model or a model you've completed before *in this season*. Take a picture of the model surrounded by enemies and fighting til its last breath, or charging forward surrounded by allies. Post the picture with your Oath Complete picture. Double the fun! Do TWO Detectuv’s Jurnal/bonuses on one model. One Jurnal and one Bonus is fine too! Be sure to tell us which Jurnals or Bonuses you have completed when you post your Oath Complete picture. Box art Copy the original paint scheme that the manufacturer used for your model. You must provide a link to the original artwork on the company's web page, in the company's product catalog (not web forums, etc.) to be counted. Post the link to the original box art with your Oath Complete picture. Speed painting! How fast can you paint one model? AFTER your oath is approved, take two pictures with the worldtimeserver.com website clearly in the background of your picture: one at the start of your painting session with your single-color model, and one at the end of your painting session with a completed model! The base does not need to be done to be called 'completed', but remember that if all your models are based you do get a point for basing. The time stamps on the worldtimeserver.com site must be within 24 hours of each other. No extra points for quickest painting time! That would be too hard to prove without video. All for One! At the end of Oath Season (at the end of April 2015), take a picture of ALL the models you've painted during the year, INCLUDING your April Oath (if you Oath a model during April). Include links to all your oaths (use the '?' button in any of your posts) plus a list of all the models you painted. You WILL be impressed with how much you've painted during the year! Apprentice Complete 3 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Journeyman Complete 6 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Expert Complete 9 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Master Complete 12 Oaths during the Oath Season.* Note: The Apprentice, Journyman, Expert and Master Achievements stack with each other, so if you complete 12 oaths you will get an extra 4 points, but if you only complete 11 oaths you will get 3 points. 0-Point Achievements -------------------- Diorama This is basically a model 'scene' that you create, assemble and paint using one or more miniature models. Our only requirement is that the scene must tell a story in some way. A feeble halfling facing a dragon, a warlord standing victorious over a fallen foe, etc. There will be a special prize for the best Diorama, as chosen by the judges at the end of the year! Judge's Decisions ----------------- Yes, this is a painting competition as well - you can earn points for being any judge’s top 3 pick. We have 3 judges and they’ll each be rewarding points each month as follows: 1st place : 3 points 2nd place : 2 points 3rd place : 1 point Best Inquisitor's Journal (must be the current month’s Journal): 1 point We’ll once again use The Bachtere Clause MkII: Anyone who receives 1st or 2nd place from a particular judge will only be eligible for points for 3rd place the next month from that judge, but can earn Best Journal points from any of the judges. An oather may receive points for Best Journal from more than one judge during a month. krushgroove fucked around with this message at 16:59 on Mar 25, 2015 |

If you cast your mind back to last season, the running theme of the Oath Thread Season 4 was the orky private detektuv Mr Green, who was approached by a mysterious woman with a steam-belching living robot and asked to find her missing Locnar. Through a series of universe- and time-skipping adventures, Mr Green lost his arms (but got them replaced with bionic appendages), got his legs transformed into dog's legs, received a tatoo, got shot (more than once), found a flaming sword, and much much more. Mr Green has been relaxing ever since, telling stories of his trip in his local bars and earning plenty of drinks. And now, word of his travels have reached the ears of the Emperor's Inquisitors... + + INQUISITOR TRAMADOS - - TRACKING SUBJECT 'MISTER GREEN' - SPECIES ORK - PROFESSION INVESTIGATOR + + So's oi gets a knock on me do' an' in walks in this crazy schmoe all dressed up in shiny bitz. 'e sez ta me... 'Mister Green, I presume. I have a proposition for you, one which you may have some experience that may help the Ordos Inquisition.' YOO WOT!!! Nah, sez me. oi din't want none o' that blasted green ball o' menace. oi din't care dat it had escaped - AGAIN. Not my problem! No suh. oi 'ad so much trouble from it...but at least oi was gettin' free drinks and wenches from all ova...so oi gives this dummy a proposition... 'Mister Green. There is no chance that an Inquisitor can accompany you on this quest. We cannot permit anyone to know that the Inquisition is even thinking of working with you in this matter. Nor can we advance you such a sum of money.' Oi held me ground. oi'd do it - but only for suitcases of money! An' with someone else taggin' along to take sum a' dese bullets that would surely be comin' my way! 'Very well, Mister Green. *I* will accompany you. I may be able to...open doors for you that may otherwise remain closed. First, we must obtain for you some suitable travel clothes. And I must arrange appropriate...identification suitable for one traveling with the Inquisition.' This month's theme, AKA the INQUISITOR'S JOURNAL: All you have to do this month is to take at least 3 Work In Progress pictures over the course of painting your oathed model(s). The pictures have to be of the actual model(s) you oathed. Please show all of the model(s) you've oathed - at least half are required to earn the points. Timestamps are not required. Completing the Inquisitor's Journal gives you an easy point, so if you want to be in the running for Grand Prizes at the end of Season 5, you'll be wanting every point you can get! Even if you don't care about points, many of the Journals will get you to try painting techniques you may not have tried before, so go for it! krushgroove fucked around with this message at 09:53 on May 1, 2014 |

That would be on the wrong side of the international date line, which would cost literally everyone west of Bangladesh a day of painting. Using Samoa, the aussies may be the last to get to Oath on the 1st, but they get nearly an entire full day extra on the end of the month to finish up.

Since it's relevant to me as well i went and checked, and for 28mm last season it was 5. So krushgroove, is it still 5? If it is, can I oath addition a 5th Marauder later in the month to reach 5, or can an oath addition not count for a themed group?

Do the Jurnal/other requirements apply to the whole oath? For example, if I paint the two Ikadrons I oathed, making WIP pics for the extra point, and then decide to add 1 random model for the speedpainting achievement, do I have to take WIP photos of the speedpainted model as well? Also, do unlimited achievements mean I can make WIP photos, include the part/paint list, a pic in battle, and a backstory, and claim points for all those? And what does the Double The Fun and the bonus points refer to? 2+ achievements or achievement+jurnal, something else not yet posted, or remnant wording from last year's thread?

Yes the themed group hasn't changed, apart from being quarterly now: quote:All you have to do is make an oath that includes a group of models painted and/or converted to follow any theme. They can be an army unit, sports team, a group of same-race monsters, the crew of a ship, etc. For each group you complete, you’ll get an entry into a quarterly prize draw, with the lucky winner getting £25 / US$38.50 / €29.50 / AU$36.50 / CA$39.00 worth of models! I'll be adding info on this an all the other prizes into the wiki soon.
