Maybe, just maybe, he should appoint someone who pledges to serve out the term as a placeholder and let California voters decide who they want in an election, especially since Newsom has already appointed one senator, essentially for life? Once you're appointed and then an incumbent, re-election is almost a lock. Looks like there's been only one open election for California senate seats since 1992, Harris in 2016.

He'd have to run for the senate seat for real in 2024, that might not be enough time to overcome the outrage of breaking his promise to appoint a black woman to the position. It wouldn't help his presidential chances either. This is all still theoretical, since Feinstein (or the senate aides signing things and speaking for her) has not resigned and may serve out her term. Being out for months and holding up judicial appointments hasn't been enough to pressure her (or them) to step down.

Family Values posted:Have their even been any leaks from her office? Until I see any evidence at all that her staff are abusing her rather than pleading with her to step down and her going gently caress no, I'll assume she's got the same death grip on power that she's always had. Her staff ARE Senator Feinstein now, they're making the decisions, telling her what to sign and how to vote. She's obviously not capable of doing any of that herself and hasn't been for years. That's the abuse, taking advantage of her diminished capacity for their own benefit.

I've beat this drum before. Newsom really should appoint a placeholder and let the people vote next year. Being able to fill two lifetime senate seats is rather much. The incumbency advantage one gets from a seat filling appointment is too great to overcome. Boxer and Feinstein were elected in 1992, since then, there has been only one open election, Harris in 2017... and her seat was filled by appointment when she became VP, so Padilla is likely to be there for the next 20+ years.

https://www.npr.org/2024/03/21/1239811952/california-proposition-1-homeless "Newsom, who made the measure a signature proposal, spent significant time and money campaigning on its behalf. He raised more than $13 million to promote it with the support of law enforcement, first responders, hospitals and mayors of major cities. Opponents raised just $1,000." Pretty rough there, it passed by 29,000 votes out of seven million. Not a good sign for his personal influence and popularity. Now the question is if Prop 1 is well enough designed to work, or it ends up like, say, Oregon botching their drug issue.
