Hex Babel

Since it's back in contact with him again, Hex reverses gravity and the two launch straight up through the hole in the ceiling, but not before the starmage starts wrestling with the monster. Gotta keep it interested, hopeful that it might manage to impale the slippery guy in a suit. That way maybe it won't notice just how high up they've gotten. It's chilly, and the air is thin. After adjusting their position slightly to account for the rotation of the planet, he strikes.

Out comes Tess, which he uses to gorily break the minotaur's grip on him by melting through its forearm. It shrinks from sight as its gravity returns to normal, and Hex relaxes his own personal gravity to follow it back through the hole to the prison.

Now that he's not grappling while falling like before, he manages to not crush himself against the ground. Instead, he executes a slick looking backflip and dive ending with him shoving Tess into the monster's chest.

"Right where your heart should be..." He taunts, rising and brushing off any frost that might not have been shaken loose by the meteoric fall.

The warm light of Nemo's healing beam washes over Brunch, reminding him that he forgot to thank Kozu for her assistance earlier. He follows the green glow back to its source, locating Kozu and her 'bot on the floor below. "Hey, Cain! I forgot to say - thank Nemo fer blockin' some of them bullets from earlier! ...Ya hear me, Cain? I'm talkin' to ya!!" Before long, the dwarf realizes that she's not just making funny faces back at him - she's being strangled! And the strangler is nowhere to be seen!!

As he leans the glider towards Kozu, his weight already bearing it floor-wards, the dull red light on the glider's nose blinks more rapidly. It appears to be an indicator of whoever's controlling it, somehow. "Oh, yer down there alright... Yer just invisible! KOZU!! GET SMALL!!" Tipping the glider into an ever steeper dive, Brunch aims it for the "empty" space just over Kozu's already-low-to-the-ground head. As the curved blade slices past her hair, Brunch leaps into a twirling backflip and lands facing Kozu, ready to take on her attacker!

"That’s cheating! You know the rules: once you sacrifice something here, you don’t get it back!"

The minotaur barely seems to notice as the two figures soar higher and higher into the air. Hex is mildly disturbed by the fact that the soldier delivers a series of heavy blows to his face, despite the fact he is reliant on the starmage for flight. Whether it is due to the cold air or the fact that he is twisting and turning, Dragovic's mighty blows don't quite seem to connect properly. Hex executes his move flawlessly, and Dragovic crashes back to earth with a horrendous crunch, his body and armor crushed by the force of the fall. There is a shattering sound and several plates fall from his chest plate. He snarls and snorts angrily, snatching his cannon from the ground he turns and unleashes a stream of munition across the room!

Hex you take 3 damage - not a good roll for the minotaur! Dragovic takes a little more damage now if you're hitting him in the chest. Bullets heading your way chief. What do you do?

Kozu struggles and sucessfully ducks out of the way, not only saving her own head, but also opening up her assailant to Brunch. The dwarf manages to twist the glider in the air, dive low, and soar just over the mechanist's head. There is a sickening THONK and the strangling around Kozu's neck goes limp. A second later blood appears all over the far wall and a severed head slowly fades into focus.

Brunch, you are happy, but forgot that the glider is still heading for a brick wall! Defy damage to avoid crashing into it!

Milliner, you're too low to be hit by bullets right now, but still being strangled.

Hex stands his ground, apparently shielding himself from the barrel of the gun with only one hand. Of course, there are portals at play. "That’s cheating! You know the rules: once you sacrifice something here, you don’t get it back!"

Hex's dimensional jiggery-pokery pays off once more as he unleashes a storm of ammo from his open palm. Dragovic responds with surprising grace for somebody so huge, twisting away quickly, but he takes several shots to the chest anyway. To Hex's surprise he notices that even void of armor, the bullets have apparently ricocheted off the mass of knotted muscle that makes up the minotaur's chest. What shocks him even more is the burning sensation followed by blood pouring from his own palm. Looks like opening portals in your own body isn't necessarily always the safest thing to do.

Hex, Dragovic's remaining armor blocks the damage and you takes 1 damage (I figure that's okay considering you rolled 7-9. I always struggle on how to handle this sort of thing.) On the plus side the minotaur now has his back to you! What do you do?

As the wheeling minotaur tears up more of the walls with his now firing cannon, Kozu makes a dive for safety and cuts under the river of lead. The wall above her is chewed to dust by gunfire but she finds herself with the opportunity to launch a sneak attack at the soldier's undefended legs. She also notices that portions of the gun are starting to glow - perhaps from magic, perhaps from overheating.

Kozu, what do you do?

Brunch crashes into the wall with a crunch. The glider at his feet explodes in a small burst of cogs and gears and class. Whether lacking focus or simply underestimating the structural integrity of the wall - he fails to burst through it and instead finds himself on his back, surrounded by detritus. The situation worsens as he sees the face of the clown appear above him. The man clutches a dagger in one hand and snarls, muttering something unintelligible as he brings the weapons down with both hands for Brunch's stomach.

Brunch, you take 3 damage from the wall! There's an auguste up in your grill, what do you do?

While her allies take down the minotaur, Milliner finds herself on the brink of a fight to the death with a barmaid. Her knife goes clattering away across the stones as the two drop to the floor, rolling about madly and trading punches and kicks left and right. One moment Milly is smushed facedown on the floor, desperately trying to break out of a chokehold; the next, she's got the barmaid pinned, vicious bodyshots and headbutts flying back and forth like two starving cats wrestling over a fish head. Grigron's cloak must have some sort of minor protective spell on it, because the two are hardly even singed by the thermal bloom from Dragovic's ludicrously huge firearm. That, or it's just a really good cloak.

When the barmaid attempts to get some distance, she slips on a bit of rubble. Milly promptly seizes the opportunity. Snarling with fury, she grabs the barmaid by the hair, wrestles her to the ground, and smashes the barmaid's head against the rock until she stops moving. Eugh.

Weapon in hand, he instantly falls on the musclebound one-armed bull and executes an illegal solar powered rabbit punch to the back of the neck at the base of the skull. You don't turn your back on someone who can accelerate at 9.8 meters per second squared in any direction at will. That's 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.75 seconds. "That’s cheating! You know the rules: once you sacrifice something here, you don’t get it back!"

The barmaid goes limp in Milliner's hands as her head goes slightly mushy against the jagged rock in the floor. The stolen's victory is short-lived as a stream of bullets roll across the floor nearby, kicking dust and pebbles into her face. Milliner catches sight of a tattoo of a cog on the back of the barmaid's neck just as she is forcibly grabbed from behind. It seems that in the tussle, she lost sense of direction and forgot the number one rule - don't get close to a prisoner's cell. Feston reaches through the bars of his cell and drags her back, but rather than strangling Milliner he immediately lets go.

"Listen," he hisses. "You need to help me get out of here. I'll help you, okay? But I need to get out right now or I'm dead and so is your one lead. Find a key and free me, please!"

Milliner, what do you do?

Nemo's bolt strikes Dragovic directly in the face, snapping his head back and momentarily blinding him. He gives a short, sharp snort of frustration as the cannon goes once more flying from his grip and clatters against the floor. He stomps a couple of times, searching for it, then turns his back and charges for Brunch. Seeing both the clown and the minotaur closing in on the injrued initiate, Kozu leaps into action and distracts the clown. They go rolling across the ground in a storm of blows. The clown manages to deliver sevearl nasty punches to Kozu's face and she ends up sprawled across the floor with the clown straddling her chest and trying to force the dagger into her sternum. He's not necessarily stronger than the halfling - who spends a lot of time tugging machinery around - but right now he has the superior positioning.

Kozu, you take 3 damage in the rough and tumbling. If you let go of the dagger, you're getting stabbed. What do you do?

Tess burns away a significant chunk of flesh at the base of the minotaur's head. He shakes back and forth angrily, stopping his charge towards Brunch, and stomping like an angry toddler. Unfortunately, Hex fails his normally graceful dismount. He lands awkwardly, stumbling for balance, and Dragovic reaches out and grabs him with ease. Clutched tightly in hands as strong as an earthquake, Hex is going to find it hard to simply vanish through a portal. He struggles to free an arm, but the minotaur's grip is strong.

Hex, you're trapped with your arms at your side. Defy+STR to free a hand and do something, or think of something more interesting. If another character can free your arm then you get to strike with surprise and deal your damage for free, but if you do it yourself you'll have to roll. "That’s cheating! You know the rules: once you sacrifice something here, you don’t get it back!"

Brunch manages to launch the clown into his minotaur ally, using the smaller man's head as a maskeshift weapon. The Minotaur stumbles and collapses to one knee, snarling and breathing heavily. At the same time, Hex frees one hand and forces the shifting tesseract into the meaty flesh of the soldier's forearm. There is a hissing and the smell of cooking flesh quickly fills the room. The Minotaur grits its teeth but does not scream. Instead it climbs back to its feet and shakes Hex hard within its grip. At the command of Kozu, the soldier turns to see its own cannon aimed for its chest. A hint of utter surprise registers within its dark eyes, then the cannon fires. The sheer force is enough to send both Kozu and Nemo flailing backwards, crashing into one of the few undamaged walls. The trigger launches a missile alongside Nemo's bolt of energy. There is a blast of thick smoke and multicoloured light as the various forces at play interact. Hex finds himself flung away, one of the arms still clutching his chest but loose and bleeding at the other end.

Milliner spreads her hands and dark snakes of energy spill forth like writhing vipers. The bars of the cell shimmer for a moment and Feston breaths a frantic sigh of relief.

"Thank god! We've got to get out of here now!"

But then something goes wrong. Rather than melting away as intended, the bars appear to be spreading. They vanish from the cell door but begin appearing all over the rest of the room. Bars fade into existence at random interavals, quickly forming a maze of iron bars. Captain Higgs is nearly imapled as a bar grows up where he stood only moments before. He stumbles back and out of the room just as the doorway to the outside itself is sealed off with bars.

The room is rendered into a maze with a sealed exit. There is still the hole in the ceiling made by Hex, but its a really big jump to make.

"It's fine, it's fine, it's fine!" Feston mutters frantically. "You just have to make sure that Dra...."

There is a beep. One of the huge lengths of chains wrapped around the minotaur's body is now emitting a blinking red light. Or rather, the huge mechanical box chained to his body by them is. He takes a step, his face partially burnt away, one arm smouldering, the other missing entirely, then collapses to the floor dead.

"gently caress!" Feston screams.

The words 'self-destruct' play through the heads of the party. And from the size of the box, it will not be an explosion anyone wants to weather. You need to get out.

"That’s cheating! You know the rules: once you sacrifice something here, you don’t get it back!"

Dragovic's body, red-flashing light attached, goes sailing into the nightsky. He doesn't quite reach the lower bounds of the stratosphere, but he gets some serious altitude. He is very quickly a single blip of red light in the dark over-sky. Then, WHOMPF! A bright red ring of fire spreads from the dot as his self-destruct button detonates. In the city below, ash and grit rain down upon the civilians, many of whom have turned their heads up to look at the strange phenomenon.

Brunch and Milliner search through the mound of bodies for anything that might provide useful. Aside from the cannon being oggled apprehensively by Nemo, there is little in the way of loot. 10 gold coins, a healing potion, and some pipeleaf. However, you do find something else - the clown carries a book. The front cover shows a series of cogs, one of which matches the tattoo on the back of the barmaid's neck. The inside of the book is filled with almost no writing, but dozens of diagrams. At a glance, they don't APPEAR to actually be showing instructions on how to construct something - rather they appear to be artwork. The functionality of any such cogs would be low, but they do form rather aesthetic patterns. His Divinity Aaronow would probably know a little about it if you took it to him.

Divvy up the bits you've found.

"Everyone okay in there?" Higgs calls through the bars. "Dahla has checked out the tied up guards - they're our people, though apparently there was an imposter slinking around. Gods... the jail is wrecked. We're checking prisoners in other rooms now, but for the moment it looks as though Feston and Dragovic were the only ones they freed."

Feston cowers miserably in a corner, saying nothing.

The silence and stillness of the room is broken when a section of what appears to be an iron gauntlet falls through the hole in the sky and bonks Kozu on the head.

Hex winces on Kozu's behalf when the gauntlet lands on her head. "Sorry." At least they all weren't engulfed in flames, thanks to his efforts, but it bothered him that he couldn't spare his colleagues from all of the suffering that beset them.

Maybe he could help, though. Starface pulls out a ration and tries to magically cool it, to make an icepack, then hands it to the halfling through a portal. "Put this on it, then share some of that plant. I ache like hell. Knowing this place, it's probably illegal and will get taken in as evidence otherwise."

Taking one look at the traumatized Feston, Hex chuckles and adds, "Looks like he could use a puff too."

Brunch shades his eyes from the explosion in the sky above, the fiery explosion glowing orange into pink and finally a dim haze, far away. The dwarf pockets a couple of gold coins and picks up the cog-faced book, flipping through its pages as he strolls over to join the smoking circle. He turns the book upside-down and back again, trying to make sense of it. "drat, look at this... What kinda machine ya think this builds? Or is it the big mech's innards in diagram?"

The pipeleaf soothes Brunch's battle edge, and makes the drawings in the book seem at once more vibrant, and less important. This paper and ink and binding becomes a little too much for the formerly-book Brunch, and he shuts it with a slam. Steadying himself with a hand on Hex's arm, the dwarf grins past mostly-lidded eyes. "Ya know, ya did good in there, Hexy. I know I ain't been the kindest to ya since ya came back from... wherever, but... well, jus' want ya to know, no hard feelin's here. Yer a good egg, star-egg. I mean egg-face. I mean egg-egg."

Brunch seems out of it, so Hex records his testimony as evidence. When eggegg puts the leaf to where his lips would be, if he had them, his head fills with smoke that obscures the celestial nebulae inside his body. Tastes good, little familiar though... He doesn't exhale, it just gradually disperses while Feston-on-his-left partakes.

"No offense taken. Gotta be hard on people sometimes to find out if they can handle it--" poo poo. Had it made it all the way around the circle already? Did poo poo really get that much stronger in the month he was stuck at the End of Time? Was he getting old??

<Milliner, you didn't hit this before me and Feston, did you?>

This poo poo gives +1 to parley by the way.

<No, and thank you. Just a moment.> "Just them? No others?" Milliner asks the captain. "I think we're all OK in here. Your prisoner's still alive, but if any of these folks are alive to question, they'll be in bad shape. Worse--" she hauls over the mushy-skulled barmaid "--I think the Church is involved somehow. And another thing. I might have...um. Cut a deal with your prisoner. We told him we'd let him go if he informs for us. E-he." She gulps and smiles sheepishly. "Sorry. I have to go interrogate him now."

***

After a few puffs, Milliner slumps against the rubble with the rest of the survivors, relaxing visibly. "Gods. The things we get up to. Hhhhh. Is everyone alright?" More or less, anyway, except for their newest informant. He's seen the stick already - time to show him the carrot. "Fester, you look a little peaked. Sure you don't want something to settle your nerves? E-hehehe." She flicks the pipe over to him with an evil grin. <Make sure to put that syzygy on him, one way or another,> she adds. <I want him more scared of us than he is of turning coat again.> As the pipeleaf takes effect, her keratoplastic glands get a little confused about what they should be doing. Her hair and eyes start to drift through the color spectrum as she makes her case to the halfling.

"So. That's really the best your boss can do, huh? See, we don't stop either." Smoke streams out her nose while she stares up at the stars. "And it looks like Hakkan don't care about friendly fire too much, hmm? We here at the firm of Fiddles, Cain, Hex, Bones, and Rose strictly adhere to a nobody-shoots-the-help policy - and we offer competitive pay and benefits, live-in accomodation, and all the 'odd work' your little convict's heart can handle. Also, if you work for us I won't have to gently caress with your memory anymore." She grins sunnily at this last comment. "Interested?"

The starmage thinks one thing and says another.

<Don't get lost while I'm away, okay?>
"Legally, my last name's 'Babel' now, thanks to Sister..."

One telepathy spell is dismissed with a click. "Otherwise what she says is true, so take the deal."

Hex offers his hand to Feston to seal the new alliance, ready to speak the magic word "syzygy" when the little creep takes it.

The Halfling's head swam as a result of the flying gauntlet. She clambers to her feet and hurries to join her mechanoid companion in the ogling of Dragovic's gigantic gun when Hex appears in a portal with frozen food to soothe her aching face.

"Y'know Starman, you're alright. A class act. A real cool person. Cool, cool, cool as a cucumber cool." Kozu says as she presses what looked to be an iced over meat pie to her face.

Her face tended to, and thanks given, she leaped towards Dragovic's gun in excitement.

"It's- it's-- it's kind of hideous and grim, but it is sooo cool. Maybe we can fix it up for you Nemo? You'll probably need a bigger chassis and shell to support the weight alone. Maybe we can strip some of the components down? Magical activation? A series of doohickeys? A whatchamacallit? I'm sure we'll figure it out." she says waving at the air around her to break Nemo and herself free of their thinking stance.

She joins up with the others who are passing around Pipeleaf merrily paving way for a trick on poor old Feston, the wretch.

"That’s cheating! You know the rules: once you sacrifice something here, you don’t get it back!"

Feston takes the pipeleaf and inhales what would be an absolutely staggering hit for most people. He holds the thick smoke in his lungs, then lets it pour lazily from between his lips.

"God..." he says. He draws again on the pipe leaf and waterfalls it upwards through his nose. This is not the first time Feston has smoked.

"I lied earlier, you know," he says unexpectedly. "I don't know where Jenna will be by now, but I know someone who does. There's a priest at the church of whatever the hell its called..." he rubs his eyes. "The Mech church, you know? Listen... Dragovic, god bless his big dumb soul, he just ripped those guys apart...Jenna would hate that...she was never like that....God...look, if you want my help I need some kind of concrete assurance that I'm safe."

"You lead us to Hakkan, you're pardoned," Higgs says. His voice is low and seething, but his offer seems genuine.

"Sorry Captain, but right now that's not enough." He turns to Milliner. "You're smart 'mam. What can you do for me?"

He shakes Hex's hand.

Just as their palms touch there is a tremendous roar from outside. The very sky visible through the hole in ceiling seems to change subtly in shade for a moment to a light green. The rumbling echo rocks back and forth and then is replaced by cries, singing, screaming, all sorts of commotion. Something is going on outside.

Starman is tired of Feston's trying to negotiate with everyone. They don't have time, the whole city's at stake. He takes Feston's hand and cuffs it to Higgs' with portalmancy.

"No more negotiating, this is what happens: I turn you invisible, you hang out in a cell with a dead or dummy inmate not affiliated with Hakkan. No one knows you're even still alive except us. You are marked missing and presumed dead by Higgs until we take care of Hakkan, you give us useful intel via telepathic link, and Higgs pardons you when everything's over."

He wipes his hand on his jacket then offers it to Milliner and the rest of the team. His head angles upward at the green sky, through that hole he's been in and out of quite a few times in the past minutes. "Let's go." What the hell was going on out there?

"That’s cheating! You know the rules: once you sacrifice something here, you don’t get it back!"

Higgs chuckles as the group soar into the air. You hear Feston calling out lacklustre cries of protest, but they fall silent quickly.

"Come on son, lets stick you somewhere safe," Higgs says.

<<Okay, fine, thanks I guess...Okay here's literally the only useful thing I know. There's a man in the church who is somehow affiliated. Jenna never told us how, that's how she keeps things so secretive. There are things I THINK and things I KNOW. I think he's somehow involved in helping people in and out of the city. I think he might sometimes transport the stolen parts outside of the city in wagons that nobody bothers to check because he's friendly old Cardinal Osbourne. Obviously, His Divinity has no idea. I've never met Osbourne myself, but I know he meets with Jenna. He's a Cardinal so he lives at the temple.>>

The bounty hunters all make their way outside. Above the city The Protector Mech looks somehow different. Though it does not appear to have moved, there are people lining the streets and staring up at it in awe, and these people - visible on every level of the city - are the source of the cries, excited screams, and songs.

"The Protector Mech fired!" a man beams to you as Hex lands. He frantically shakes everyones hand, slaps them on the back, cackles and pats Nemo. "For the first time in forever he has fired!"

"He has heard our prayers!" someone cries.

There is genuine religious hysteria spreading through the crowd.

But something doesn't seem right to Kozu. The roar she heard from inside the jail is in keeping with what a high-powered mech cannon might sound like, but the aftermath is nothing like what should be there. Any weapon powerful enough to travel such a distance and powered by such arcane magics would leave a huge throbbing aura - a visible heat signature. The end of the cannon would be blasted with ash, yet the cannon remains clean.

"Looks and sounds like a duck, but does it quack?" Kozu says peering at the giant Protector Mech from afar.

She paces back and forth.

"Aaronow does seem like the best bet, Brunch. Let's go ask him, something here seems amiss. I don't think the Mech fired, I think someone is pulling a trick. Maybe a distraction? Who knows..."

Nemo beeps and whirs in agreement, then paws at the ground with one piston-powered leg. The projector atop his back spins and clicks into place before firing a very tiny spark at the ground. Nemo runs to the point, then fires another spark further along, runs to it and repeats the process. Following his movement you slowly notice an almost invisible... not quite trail... there's something.

Nemo leads and the party follows (or do they). To their surprise they soon find themselves standing outside a large steel building fronted with gigantic cogs. In its center is a huge bronze clock that slowly marks the time until sundown. A path leads through giant open gates, through a beautiful garden, and up a set of marble stairs. Robed priests and what look like volunteers tend the garden, gathering baskets of apples, pears and beholderfruit. A pair of children throw a ball back and forth over the head of an excited dog.

Nemo marches to the gates, then freezes. His various mechnical parts whir around as if scanning for something, then he fires a tiny spark towards the back of The Church of Cogs.

Hex checks his and everyone else's pockets after the celebrating man tries to touch them, to make sure he didn't steal anything. On the temple grounds he discreetly portaljacks some of that beholderfruit, even though one usually wasn't supposed to eat anything with eyes. Supposedly each 'eye' had a different robust and excellent flavor, which meant he had to feed one to the stolen. For science or friendship or something. But that would be later, now it was business time. Nemo was ostensibly leading them to whoever faked the cannon fire, and eggegg was not going to let them escape.

Strolling into the garden, the dwarf whistles at the scenery. Suddenly, he's off like a shot, running at full tilt! He leaps into the air, curling into a tight ball of tough muscle and spinning like a sling-stone. When he lands, he's got the brown leather ball held tightly between his knees, the children and dog looking on with astonishment. "Here ya go poochie," he chortles, tossing the ball to the happy pup.
