Giro d'italia 2014 il Garibaldi

Il Garibaldi for Michael Giuseppe Garibaldi one the "fathers of the fatherland".

The Route

Overview :

Easier and more humane than in 2013, the 2014 tour of Italy remain by far the hardest route of the 3 Grand tours.
This edition will start in Ireland, after 3 stages the race will be back to southern Italy and then head north to reach the Alps for the last stages.

All the final km of each stages put together. All the stages of this giro in one profile.

Giro d'Italia 2014 - The route Overview

Stage 1

A sheep with dyed pink wool grazes in a field near the village of Balintoy in Northern Ireland. It has been painted pink to welcome the arrival of the Giro d'Italia cycle race whose race leader wears a pink jersey

A team time trial of 21.7 km around Belfast, if there is some wind, the gap could be significant between the teams strong at TTT and the rest.

Stage 2

Photoshop of IRA mural

A long stage of 219 km, it's almost flat except for 2 cat.4 climb, a chance to wear the blue jersey, the maglia azzurra, with 6 points to take.
The second part of the race is along the coast, the wind could, again, be a decisive factor and with the time bonus (10 sec for a winner) a new maglia rosa is possible.
This should be the first chance to shine for sprinters.

Note : TV = Traguardo Volante mean intermediate sprint and not television.

Stage 3

Dublin

The last stage in Ireland, again two cat.4, this time they are near the beginning, this will make the task easier for riders trying to form breakaway and more points for the mountain classification, it's should be another one for fast guys.

stage 4

Bari

After a transfer from Dublin to southern Italy and after a rest day, this very short stage of a flat 112km should be an intense fight between the sprinters teams. Leader of the points classification at this time will have a good option at keeping it.

Stage 5

Aerial view of Viggiano

The first mountain stage of this giro, nothing too crazy as maximum gradient aren't above 6%. There are 1 cat.3 and 2 cat.4 with 203 km long, enough to drop the sprinters, GC riders should made their first move.

Stage 6

Montecassino before/After in 1944

Harder than it may look, the last hill to Montecassino despite being a cat.2 is around 5% but it's long 7km and more importantly come after 240+km.

Stage 7

Duomo di San Feliciano, Piazza della Repubblica, Foligno, Italy

Foligno is the home town of Miss Italia 2014, Francesca Testasecca

A 211km medium mountain stage with a cat.3 near the start and a 4-5% cat.4 hill 40km from the finish. It won't be easy to control the race for the sprinters teams, a good opportunity for a breakaway to win.

Stage 8

Panorama di Villagrande frazione di Montecopiolo.

It's getting serious, 2 cat.1 and a cat.2, Monte Carpegna (7.8km at 8.3%) and 18km at 6.3% for Montecopiolo but 6 km to the finish line it's in the double digits. The giro won't be won there but it can be loss.

Stage 9

Casa del Sole – Sestola

Similar to the previous stage only a little easier, Passo del Lupo, the last climb, average 6%, there are 4km at 9% where action is likely.

Stage 10

Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, well known among gourmet.

Coming after a rest day it's a transitional flat stage, sprinters should control the race as they won't have that many opportunity left but this could well be another chance for a breakaway but thnaks to rest day I doubt the peloton will still be tired from the previous two mountain stages.

Stage 11

Savona, Liguria

A quick glance at the profile would make it look like a relatively easy stage, it's not, this is the longest stage of this giro with 249km, the last climb is a steep 8km at 8%.

Stage 12

The village of Barolo

A somewhat hilly 41km time trial with a finish in Barolo, one of, if not the best, wining region of Italy. The big guys (TT specialists) should win this stage.

Stage 13

Piemonte

A relatively short transitional stage, one of the last flat stages before reaching the Alps, it could decide the battle for the red jersey.

Stage 14

Sacro Monte di Oropa

A very hard stage, likely to be extremely important for the blue jersey with two cat.1 climbs and a one cat.2 average gradient around 6%.

Stage 15

Villaggio turistico, Montecampione

A flat 206km followed by a steep cat.1 climb to Montecampione, 18.6km at 7.8%, a finish around 10%, this could be spectacular and create some decisive gap for the GC.

Ciclismo Le Grandi Salite del Ciclismo #20 Montecampione
Giro 98 Plan di Montecampione

Stage 16

Val Martello

Val Martello - Number 5

Passo Stelvio

This stage come after a the last rest day. One cat.1, one H.C.or Cimo coppi; the infamous Passo dello Stelvio then a cat.1 again to finish, all that packed in a short 139km, this will be intense and could be glorious.
Last climb is 22.3km long at 6.4%

Ciclismo Le Grandi Salite del Ciclismo #03 Stelvio
Ciclismo Le Grandi Salite del Ciclismo #25 Gavia

Stage 17

Serravalle of Vittorio Veneto

Vittorio Veneto is also a CGH Guided Missile Helicopter Cruiser

Sprinters, are you still there ? This one is for you.

Stage 18

Mark the beginning of the hardest and last part of this giro with 3 mountain stages in row, the last climb 8% for 16km with double digits.

Ciclismo Le Grandi Salite del Ciclismo #06 San Pellegrino In Alpe
Ciclismo Le Grandi Salite del Ciclismo #27 San Pellegrino & Valles
Ciclismo Le Grandi Salite del Ciclismo #26 Manghen

Stage 19

26.8km mountain time trial with some steep gradient, in addition riders will be tired, expect gap to be huge.

Ciclismo Le Grandi Salite del Ciclismo #42 Grappa

Stage 20

Monte Zoncolan

This is the queen stage of this giro, Monte Zoncolan is one of the hardest climb in Europe, it's 10km at 12% with some 20% sections, hopefully it won't prove too much for the riders.

Amazing intro for the Giro Mr. Nice!

It was seriously windy here today. I don't know how a skinny climber guy could put out the kind of power to beat TT specialist Tony Martin. I don't think TM was on top form though so it could be an unfair comparison.

It sounds like there was a somewhat hard climb on the TT. Not ideal for the pure power guys like tony martin.

3 rest days. Weak as piss. (Dont get caught out, this means it starts on a FRIDAY not a Saturday)

Theres not enough long proper climby ITT's in GT's, so Im kind of pumped for stage 19.

I cant see a winner who I wont like on some level, so thats nice considering the people we'll have in the TdF. Heart says Purito or Evans, Head says Quintana or Uran. Also want to see Viviani sprint like a retard some more and try putting people in the fences... Mostly because I missed out on Djamolidine Abdoujaparov because he was before my time.

Anyway, HOORAY! Its GT time!

Thanks everybody, glad you like it, it was actually easier to make than the classics, finding info in early January about races held in March/April can be quite hard and time consuming.
There is a good number of riders that should have deserved a spot in the OP for the G.C. and a Top10 but the OP was long enough already.

You are welcome to talk about other race in this thread. About Froome and Romandie, It's not a surprise for the GC but beating Tony Martin in a TT is, maybe Tony M. forgot his sandpaper at home.

Only 4 days to wait for the Giro !

Stage 15 – Sunday 25 May: another summit finish, tune in for the dash to the climb and then watch the damage done on the way up
Stage 16 – Tuesday 27 May: the mountain stage they couldn’t ride last year, this is the Alpine festival with high altitude and hardly a flat road all day

Stage 19 – Friday 30 May: the mountain time trial should see some big time gaps

Regarding the ITT in Romandie, the breakdown of intermediate splits puts Froome's win in context.

Froome rode the climb on the course in 5'19", the joint fastest ascent along with Simon Spilak. Tony Martin took 5'45" to do the same hill.

Over the rest of the course (flat and downhill) Tony Martin was, as one would expect, the fastest at 19'06". Froome posted the third best time of 19'31" over that distance, behind Jesse Sergent.

All in all Martin was 25 seconds faster than Froome over 15 flat/downhill kilometres and 26 seconds slower over 3 uphill kilometres.

Great OP, OP. Just a small nitpick, this:

is not just the final kilometers of each stage, it's the whole Giro. Pretty neat how that scale makes some of the stages look even more like Murder Mountain. Anyway, I'm pumped as hell and hope that Quintana wins. Can't wait for Friday.

Let's get a little crazy. Let's have some fun.
I'll be barracking for Evans but I also kind of hope Uran does well considering the work he put in for Wiggins last year only for his leader to pull out. Quintana too I guess, but he's going to get plenty of chances in the future.

Also my new shift at work is pretty shithouse for late nights watching cycling so I'll be confined to watching on the weekends.
