DAD LOST MY IPOD posted:

i find this to be a very worthwhile endeavor, do you take donations in bitcoin???

The weird thing, however, is that this just illustrates yet another of what I like to call the “21st Century Problems.” If cryptocurrency is better than our current system of either trading pieces of easily misplaced or stolen paper, or getting charged a fee on every transaction, why is there no movement in our government to make cryptocurrency standard? It would be to the benefit of the many and the detriment of only a few.

Well, we can all guess that those few are payment processors and credit card companies – who are quite active in the lobbying of congressional officials and the funding of elected officials’ campaigns. Once again, we see how we are unable to prepare for a rapidly shifting future because we are still being held back by our 20th century problem.

Reforming the way that candidates raise money for campaigns really is – and I love to go back to this – the First Issue. It’s not just blocking the left and the right on issues we know about, it is preventing us from taking advantage of technological advances. It is causing the U.S. to fall behind technologically – our last, great reason we can be considered a superpower.

This is why campaign finance reform cannot wait for the next generation. We can’t wait for the future. We’re living in the future. So it’s up to us.

I’m starting a rebellion. Not a violent one, and not one full of drastic people shouting in the street. And not a rebellion against a government, a party, or even people in general.

This is a rebellion against a system. And I want all of you – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, to join me.

This rebellion is a cross-partisan initiative to fix Systemic Corruption first.

This topic's catastrophic cratering is a shame because Lawrence Lessig is legitimately a dude with ideas worth funding and D&D is not a bad place to scout for money/talent/etc. for such a project.

Too bad his hired help sucks at pitching it I guess.

NH Rebellion[edit]
From January 11th until January 24th, 2014, Larry Lessig and many others marched from Dixville Notch, NH to Nashua NH (a 185 mile march) to promote the idea of tackling "The Systemic Corruption in Washington." He chose this language over calling it "Campaign Finance Reform," stating that "Saying we need campaign finance reform is like referring to an alcoholic as someone who has a liquid intake problem." The walk was to continue the work of NH Native Doris "Granny D" Haddock. The NH Rebellion will march again on July 4th and 5th.

The last time I donated to the guy who said he'd get the dirty money out of politics he turned around and became the first major-party presidential candidate in modern political history to reject public financing.

rscott posted:

Hi Democrats, please stop co-opting socialist holidays like May Day, you guys have your own stupid milquetoast labor day to pretend like you didn't gently caress over the working class in this country. This poo poo has next to nothing to do with labor anyways, the Democrats outspent the Republicans in 2008 and 2012. The parties aren't terribly different economically, if you actually widen your discourse even slightly further than the gun slit narrow Overton window currently perpetuated by the media.

e: The more I think about this and the more I read about it the madder I'm getting. poo poo, if you had spent more time on actually educating yourself about what the gently caress is actually wrong with this country and why your little PAC spending $10million to elect some Democrats is like trying to empty the ocean with a tablespoon than on your snazzy flash transitions, you would have realized why this thread is going to go over pretty horribly in this forum. To do what you guys want to do, you're going to need at least 100 times as much money to create your own political party from the ground up. There is no way either a Democrat or Republican lead government is going to pass significant enough amount of campaign finance reform to actually matter, because with recent court rulings it might take a constitutional amendment to enact. And it isn't going to happen in 2 years, more like 15-20 if you're incredibly good at what you are doing.

Christ. This is what comes out of Harvard? How loving sheltered are you guys if you're this naive?

When conference-goers were not participating in the closed-door sessions and nightly dinners, they were enjoying the amenities of the Ritz Carlton hotel, which is located at the top of the 74-story Water Tower skyscraper on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

In the art deco lobby, attendees such as left-wing financier Joe Zimlich and Center for American Progress president Neera Tanden milled around near an ornate fountain filled with rubber ducks.

A tired-sounding Alan Grayson, who is embroiled in a messy divorce involving bigamy and assault allegations, barked schedule changes into his cell phone in the lounge area, backlit by floor-to-ceiling views of the Chicago skyline.

David Axelrod dined at the hotel’s restaurant Deca, which had a sign outside advertising its $100 grilled cheese sandwich filled with “40-year aged Wisconsin cheddar infused with 24K gold flakes.”
