Most of those "Springs" largely failed. The 1848 revolutions got crushed by monarchist forces, the Soviets Prague Spring, and, unless you're Tunisian and maybe Libyan, the progresses of the Arab Spring either got rolled back like in Egypt or have become a brutal slog that no one really cares about anymore like in Syria. In fact, you have to remember that in Egypt, they overthrew the military government of Mubarak and elected the Egyptian social conservative Muslim Brotherhood, who preceded to wreck the mostly secular society of the country with Salafist thought so much that popular liberal support and the military overthrew them again and reestablish a military-run government which now machineguns MB members in the street.

You don't even have to go that far back. Farahkahn's Million Man March and the Stewart-Colbert rally drew huge, high density crowds.

We had an American echo if the Arab Spring, though - it was Occupy Wall Street?

Of course these people have every right to have a mass gathering in public space, that is the whole point. Americans have that freedom. But what is the boundary?

The polls can and should be more important. The world seems again and again threatened by our question of the ballot or the bullet, but if people get apathetic it seems the wallet has it's own effect in the difficult balancing act of justice and violence.
